We are really into reuse and thirfting to show our kids that clothes can be donated and bought second hand to help the community and environment. This place is smaller than expected and had limited but some higher end brands. Good for my wife but limited selection for our kids and for me. I expected so much more for being in Toronto - but compared to Value Village in Durham this place lacked quantity. read more

purchased a dress online they claimed was brand new with tags but a few missing buttons and a few stains but if I took it to the cleaner should be good as new. while inspecting it for stains to point out to the cleaner I discovered a security tag attached. I contacted them figuring it was an oversight, figuring I could just ship it back but since they forgot they would cover it. They proceeded to try to say they disclosed it and they would let me ship it back T my expense. They have deleted the listing ans will not provide it. Due to this response I feel this is very fishy and i am concerned they are intentionally selling stolen merchandise So I have decided to bring it to Police but I have to wait for my vehicle that is in the shop. I should mention that I am a disabled person on a fixed income and they know that and are choosing to put me through the time, energy and distress of being in possession of something I would never knowingly have purchased. This place is beyond terrible, my only regret is that I have referred so many people since I first discovered them before my disability interfered with my ability to travel. read more

Needs to be better service staff. Customer service is non-existant here. I believe the staff who work here are volunteers. The volunteers are to busy with their phones. Its the new Generation hires they dont wanna work. But why come into work and not work. Like why bother, with that aside. They may have good finds here. Expect to shop on your own. Do not expect service. DO look at your receipts that your charged the correct amount. This store i saw them reject donations and is very strict on times to receive. You do know that in order to survive you need peoples donations i would recommend some sort of bin to be placed at the back or something so people can just drop it in there. Your team is rude to people who drop off stuff. Your selling "USED" donated clothes. If I wanted rude/judgey staff i'd go to Holt Renfrew. I would not return here staff needs to be better trained and that falls on management. read more

I used to shop here all the time. I used to donate 2 bundlebuggies full of old clothes to them twice a year. Today I asked them to let me in the fitting room, and handed the associate 4 items on hangers. She said I couldn't try them on unless I left my knapsack behind the cashdesk. I refused. My Id, bankcards, money, phone, keys, etc all all in this knapsack always, and it never leaves my sight. I asked them if the made the same demands of women with purses. They would not answer, but still would not let me in the fitting room. This is sexual discrimination. If I were a woman with a purse, they would never have asked that. They pissed me off royally. I didn't enter the fitting room or my own, or take in a secret amount of items, I handed them to her to be counted. I will never shop or donate to these people again, they are unreasonable, ungrateful, illogical sexist idiots. Bye Bye. read more

Was in double take and lost my wallet credit cards and 30 case along with phone. I dropped it in the store phone credit cards 30 cash I realized and freaked one of the staff found it as I reached the till all money cards phone was all there!!!!! Thank you. I had a very pleasant experience donating a few suitcases full of clothes. I called in advance to see if they took sheets and duvets (which they do) and the phone was answered very promptly. When I arrived they had automated doors which made it easier for me to pull my stuff in. I spoke to at least four employees while there and each one was polite, friendly and helpful. They gave me garbage bags, offered to help me put my stuff in bags and sincerely thanked me for my donation. It definitely made me feel appreciated. The store itself is very clean, spacious and well maintained. I've been in plenty of thrift stores before and some can feel crammed and musty, not this one. It would be a pleasant shopping experience for those who frequent this store. Also of note: they have a parking lot, they steam and clean the clothes before they go out for sale and they will collect furniture or large donations from your home. The proceeds via the Yonge St Mission go to a bunch of community services. Also, the store itself provides jobs and training for disadvantaged, low income Toronto residents. read more

This is a review of the store from a donators point of view. I'm not much of a thrift shopper, but when donating my clothes I want to feel that they will be loved by their new owner. Goodwill and the Salvation Army gets oodles of donations. I like to try to help out other organizations which may not get the same volume of items. Also, the store provides jobs and training for many people with lower incomes. The store is run by Yonge Street Mission which is a wonderful organization providing outreach programs, food services, and training programs. There is a small parking lot for the store and a donation bin is located just inside the entrance. It's really easy to donate clothes, lightly used houseware, and toys. If you have six garbage bags or more, they will pick up your donations for $10. By donating to the Double Take store, you are helping out the Regent Park and Cabbagetown community! read more

While I'm not much of a thrift shopper, I feel like there needs to be something said about Double Take. It's not bad of a store, actually. Whereas most Value Villages, Goodwills and Salvation Army stores I've been to are often overstuffed with merchandise all over the place, cramped and sometimes emitting a musty smell, you don't get that at Double Take. There is more care and emphasis from what I can sense in creating a more clean and orderly (even upscale?) retail environment--down to the spaciousness and the colours on the walls. Clothes are much more neatly sorted and racked, kitchenware and glassware are carefully displayed. It rarely looks like shelves have been ignored for months. That being said, a lot of the stuff are very generously priced. If I can walk away with a handful of pint glasses for under $10, I'm a happy drinker. Double Take is operated by the Yonge Street Mission, and proceeds benefit their myriad of community services. The store provides employment opportunities for folks in nearby Regent Park. Donations accepted during store hours in a bin beside the doors. There is parking to the right side of the building. You can also take the 506 or 72 to get here--just a short walk east on Gerrard from Parliament. read more

I've found some good furniture here and there's some quality stuff if you're willing to hunt for it. Biggest issue is the customer service - they follow you through the store watching you like a hawk the whole time but don't actually offer any assistance. It makes me feel genuinely uncomfortable to spend any length of time browsing. read more

As long as Kathy Webster is manager, I won't go there. She has her employees policing the store as if everyone is a potential shoplifter. It's grating to be followed in that intrusive manner. I don't donate to the store any longer either, and give whatever I have to Diabetes Canada. It's odd how the Yonge Street Mission always emphasizes its Christian values, but I certainly don't see them being applied at Double Take. Quite the opposite. Double Take used to have a really lovely manager a few years ago. If I ever see her again, I will want to tell her how much her management style is missed. read more

I'm hesitant to write a review here just because this is my local thrift haunt.. The finds here are unparallelled to other second hand stores in the downtown core, like value village I find plenty of on trend vintage and second-hand finds here, just takes a bit of work as the turn over in this shop is not as quick as other thrift shops. They also often have half-price events making it a score for bargain hunters. Also a fantastic place to donate the clothes you're ready to part with. The Yonge Street Mission is an organization I'm happy to support. read more

i think that double take makes you do a minor double take, like perhaps a one and a quarter take. it is its size and easy to navigate space that affords that take. to put it another way, it treats itself as a mini department store. it just happens to have used cheap clothing that might not be at the height of fashion these days. im sure the only criteria for the person who picks the clothes, accessories and objects of (minor) desire are that they are functional, as in not ripped or broken. this would be in contrast to other used clothing stores that perhaps take more care to feature certain things more than others, to try build a collection of styles of clothing. at double take you get what comes there. the stock includes half a warehouse for womens clothes and shoes. the other half includes childrens and mens clothes, books, stereo equipment, boring trinkets, jewellery, perfumes and i think dvds. books cost as much as 1 dollar each. the prices are extremely fair and if love the browse then this will be easy to travel and because of the large stock its likely youll find something to your liking. read more

.Extremely RUDE, SUSPICIOUS & HARASSING STAFF , but a useful place because it's cheap. Fairly organized and cleaner than most second-hand places. Usually a half-price sale off the prices, which are already cheap. Lots of stuff for women, but not much for men. Staff unfortunately act like jail keepers. Good place for getting office type clothes until you can afford better. Check all size areas, in case things are where they don't belong. PROTECT YOURSELF AGAINST BED BUGS - - AS WITH ALL SECOND HAND GOODS, ALWAYS KEEP EVERYTHING YOU BUY IN TIED PLASTIC BAGS UNTIL YOU CAN CLEAN AND DRY IT AT HIGH HEAT BEFORE YOU STORE IT IN YOUR HOME OR WEAR IT. Be warned, staff will watch you like a hawk as though you were a shoplifter, even if you are just innocently browsing and wanting to buy something. They are rude and accusatory, trying to make you leave your bag at the counter &/or demanding to look inside it when you leave. They literally follow customers around the store and every time you want to try something on, you have to aplogize/beg for someone to unlock one of the the change stalls. When customers are finished trying on the clothes, there is nowhere to hang these items. Some staff will tell them to hang it on a nearby rack, and then the next staff person will scold them for not bringing it to the cash to ask the counterperson to put back on the floor racks. Shrug*. Then when a customer DOES bring it back to the front, there is nowhere to put it except on the counter, and then they ring it through expecting you to buy it. The buying/trying on process has so many rules that are just unclear and ridiculous. The spirit of the place can be very demeaning AND BULLYING, which goes entirely against its purpose to be a charitable outreach organization. DON'T EVER LEAVE YOUR BAG OR PACKSACK AT THE COUNTER - - - you can never know if it's clean back there, and the counter is not watched all the time, so it could get stolen. read more

Double Take is slightly classier than the Sally Ann and Goodwill, but not as upscale as Value Village. I don't think I've ever bought anything to wear here. Once I found a nice shirt, but it didn't have a price tag on it so they wouldn't sell it to me. Their books are incredibly cheap. I think 50 cents for a paperback. So that's something I guess. read more

I went to this store recently, and was extremeley disappointed. I found the prices were higher than that of Goodwill and even Value Village. I also found the staff to be quite rude. They have a look-down-their-nose attitude there. The manager was rude, and the gay guy there who I also talked to about donating some clothes, was rude. I don't recommend this place at all, most places are thrilled when you donate stuff, and even if they can't sell it, they still take it without a hassle and decide what to do what they want with it, but minus the unpleasantness. The stuff I had, could have been re used. I wan't planning on donating any mattresses or boxsprings or anything like that. They were clean clothes with no rips or holes and were not damaged in any way. I was told off here as if I was bothering them, talk about very unproffessional attitudes. I'll take my business elsewhere. read more

I am a huge fan of thrift store and second hand shopping - particularly for unique and / or vintage items. Double Take is definitely one of the stores on my rotation! Positives: 1) The prices are GREAT. It seems as if there is always some sort of sale on top of the already very reasonable prices. 2) I LOVE spending my money here, because not only can I find great things, but I am also supporting a great cause. I have been here 4 times now, and have never left empty handed. 3) The store is clean and organized. It is a positive experience as far as thrift store shopping goes. 4) I find that there are awesome vintage treasures buried throughout the racks! Negatives: 1) The selection is not amazing when compared to a place like Value Village. I also fined that the stock is somewhat 'stagnant'. I came four times in two months, and I recognized a lot of stuff from my first visit, at my last visit. As it is not a huge space, it is important to move stock to keep repeat visitors interested in returning. 2) The 'Showcase' room was a disappointment - only because it is hyped up more than necessary on their website. 3) Jewelry, bag and shoe selection is not great. Overall, I would give it a 3.5 - I throw in an extra half star because it is such an amazing cause. I would definitely recommend it and continue to look forward to my visits there! read more

I've been going to Double Take for a few years (donating and shopping) and never had a bad experience though the staff aren't that friendly and I constantly feel like I'm being watched. This week I went at 5:40pm (the store was closing at 6pm that day) to make a donation of awesome men's clothing, gorgeous throw pillows and a duvet comforter set. One of the older staff members watched me as I put my donation in the bin and as I turned around to start perusing in the store she said "We are closing in 10 minutes". Not even a 'hello' or 'thanks'. I would never expect to be rewarded for donating but a friendly hello would have been nice, as without donations the store would be nothing so some friendly rapport is at least expected in return. I replied, "Actually I have 20 minutes to shop before you close", and I walked passed her. Moral of the story, you catch more flies with honey, so be courteous to those who keep your store going. read more

This store is nothing to shout about really. I have a major concern about the staff, they are quite rude and follow you around like they wish to hitch a ride on your back. I also noticed that the cashier messed about with my credit card a little longer than i expected then she had a little chit chat with her collegues then continued with cashing i heard her called out the last 4 digits of my card while stareing at her screen. I intend to carefully monitor my card for any discrepancies because something just didnt seem right. I left that place feeling horrible. I recommend Salvation army or better yet Value village. read more

Until the nearby Goodwill closed, the overpriced Double Take was always my 2nd or not 3rd destination choice. Being on the border of Regent Park the price of its clothing, knick knacks, scarves, jewellery does not reflect the economic reality of their customers' income. Many a time I have shown the employees items priced 25-30 cents less than the original price, such as Dollar Store items or Michael's Crafts items. Now the also the very large Salvation Army store on Parliament/Shuter has closed, they are the ONLY thrift store left east of Yonge&Carleton. Aside from the price imbalance, their goods are good quality. Also, given the volume of donations they receive relative to their small store means they resell their donations at a profit. read more

I have found some really good women and children's clothing at amazing prices. Clothes are in better condition and cleaned and pressed. This store is still a thrift store and it seems to be geared to helping people rather than some thrift stores which seem to be for profit. read more

I happened to get a new (tags still on) pair of boots for my 4yo daughter and a pair of new (in the package) pair of thermal socks for my other daughter. The staff were friendly, the place was clean and cheerful. I was very happy with the experience. I'll go back before going shopping for items new. It is walking distance for me and I like that. Only drawback was they didn't have much in the way of snow suits for kids which was why I was there. This review is based on one visit, but it was positive, on the whole. read more

Nope will not go back. Unbelievable how expensive this place is. It really needs new management. The selection is terrible. The cost of anything there is pretty much what you would pay regular retail. They have a bunch of dirty clothes that are priced less but they are covered with dust. Like other used clothing place such as Value Village they have become greedy and arrogant. Do not expect a deal there you will not find it. read more

The store is quite organized compared to other thrift stores, I have stumbled upon some pretty good brands. However, the staffs are quite rude. I think this has to do with them seeing the store as a department store. I have been there three times and in two instances one of the staffs followed me around and stood there staring at me while I look through the racks. Not cool. read more

HOW WOULD YOU FEEL?? If you asked a manager for a simple favour as to call you back, not asking to much just to advise you or tell you "yes or no" if a hold was or wasn't removed from a product.. simple question, simple favour, simple request but this simple would and could guide to a good customer service.., and for your surprise the manager's answer would be:" I AM SORRY SIR BUT I DO NOT HAVE SPACE IN MY MIND TO THINK ABOUT CALLING YOU BACK, I DO HAVE THINGS MORE IMPORTANT TO DO", we follow manager's regulations..(?) she was the manager.. HOW WOULD YOU FEEL? Very frustrated. So was I, and that was my question to the Manager of Double Take on May/18/2010 with regards to a hold in a furniture. I am an avid and experienced thrift store shopper, and I was pleasantly surprised when I finally took a chance on Double Take. Their selection is excellent - I got a Brian Bailey jacket for $8! - and the layout of the store works very well. Like any thrift shop experience, you have to be willing to really look through what's available to find any hidden gems. On the day I went, I walked out with a garbage full of designer gear for under $30. But I was in there for over an hour finding them all. read more

Went into Double Take and saw a stack of vintage plates in the pattern that I have at home, so I thought I'd get some more. However, the plates were individually ticketed at high prices, even though some of them had cracks and chips. When I asked manager Kathy Webster if she could give me a better price if I took the lot, she became adversarial to the point of rudeness, informing me that "this is not a flea market" (a rich statement, considering that it's a thrift shop, and even fine antique stores will work with the customer a little). Instead of appreciating my willingness to make a substantial purchase by offering a small break, she not only rejected attempts at negotiation out of hand, but treated me with what sure felt like dismissive contempt. It was one of the sales clerks who explained to me later that the store had a loyalty program that could offer me some savings. That clerk's thoughtfulness salvaged a sale that would have been lost due to the attitude of the store manager, who would do well to learn that a little courtesy and flexibility is good business. Kudos to the clerk. Still, I left the store feeling rather mistreated and wishing I had never gone in. read more
