Ooooh yay!!!! Double Happy is back open for dine in! We popped. In for lunch and it was delicious! Apparently, there are new owners, but it's still great food... The lunch specials are really awesome. You can get entrée, your choice of rice and appetizer and soup. The portions are just right. My husband is particular and they were able to meet his every need just perfectly. The portions were really good and both of us will be taking home food we enjoyed beef and broccoli and sesame chicken and it was delicious. Double Happy was my favorite Asian restaurant in the area. I hadn't been for a while, and ordered my favorite dish, Kung Pao Shrimp. I noticed a sign reading, Under New Management. I took the meal home and was disgusted by it. The white rice was not cooked and inedible. I ate some of the shrimp and ended up throwing the rest away. Double Happy is a Louisville institution. It is also kind of just normal American Chinese food with a Vietnamese side (hence DOUBLE happy). I have never had bad food here whenever I order. I have had orders where I kind of regret ordering what I did but I can't blame the restaurant for that. If you need that classic American Chinese food and are even somewhat in the area then this is the best option for you, without a doubt. I have only ever experienced take out here but the employees are always very nice and I have ordered large orders here without any issues. I personally like the moo shu pork, sesame chicken, and the egg drop soup. read more

Coming from the east coast we are always looking to try new Chinese food out here. Decided to give this place a shot from our normal place. Unfortunately we didn't really like it. The portion sizes were good but the food wasn't that good. The Genera Tso was an abomination it literally had no sweetness or spice to it, instead it was very earthy tasting and salty like it was some kind of mushroom sauce. My son's Lomein was also really salty. The egg rolls were fine as were our crabrangoon. It's like the appetizers were ok but all the main dishes were bad, even the fried rice was as literally plain rice with small bits of scrambled egg but it was fried or had any flavor there. Lastly this place was expensive, we spent almost $100 on this food and with one dish not even edible and the rest which we usually save for lunch the next day all ended being tossed in the trash. Stopped by this place after lunch to try a boba drink. My brother got the honey dew boba milk tea and I got the taro. He did not enjoy his and wished that it was more sweeter and that they didn't put too much milk tea in it. I actually enjoyed mine. It was perfectly sweet and I did taste the milk tea in mine, but it wasn't over powering. We both did agree that the boba was cooked perfectly. Just beware that this place will not be doing dine in anymore. They have stopped doing dine in since Covid. I asked the lady how long they have been there and she said the old couple who owns the place has been in business since 1981. I was only 2 years old! Lol She said the couple is planning on retiring and that's why they won't be doing dine in. Their menu looks good though. Maybe one day, I will try take out from this place. There are definitely more gourmet Chinese restaurants around, but for huge servings of all the American-Chinese classics, Double Happy does it very well, and it is a thoroughly family-run place. The owners being Vietnamese, the pho is also great and offered in a wide variety. I typically get take-out, which is smooth thanks to their own parking lot behind the building. On the other hand, eating in tends to be a slow experience, and delivery can take much longer than the time estimate given. read more

Not quite Double Crappy, but it's a "Meh" nonetheless. Walking in is about as exciting as picking up your shirts from the cleaners, and anyplace that foists those annoying napkins that don't absorb water upon unsuspecting patrons automatically start with a "Meh" (max) in my book. When you go on trial, you're basically trusting your fate to 12 people who weren't smart enough to get out of jury duty. Likewise, when you eat at restaurant for lunch, your experience is based upon someone who drew the short straw and got stuck with lunch duty. I've mostly been a luncher here. Consider the FSAPs, the pre-college tests restaurants must take: Food; Service; Atmosphere; and Price. Food: OK, some dishes well done, others define "average." Service: I felt no special warm group hugs here. Atmosphere: 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, CO2 rising. Meh. Price: Not bad. Double happy is A- ok in my books. Had high expectations, this place definitely didn't meet them but to be fair it wasn't bad and being the only local decent rated restaurant for delivery in the area I think all in all it wasn't bad. Delivery: 4 stars! The service was great. My order was delivered perfectly without issue. The wait was a littler longer then I would have liked in general but they met the time they promised to be there. Friendly delivery man, no issues there. Food overall falls in that middle group of not bad but not amazing. Probably 3 stars for effort. Some hits and misses to be fair. Like the fried rice was very very good! The highlight of the meal. On the other hand everything else was just meh, egg drop soup too watery along with the shrimp dish I ordered. The Kung pow chicken was pretty good though, balanced well with the rice and made me have to acknowledge that they had some good dishes. If I was hungry and lazy I'm sure I could order from here again and try something new. Just be mindful that nothing was 5 star worthy. read more

Hubs & I stopped in for a super fast lunch today. We were greeted by a very nice young man who seated us quickly and assured us he'd get the orders in as fast as possible. I had explained we had an appointment in half an hour. Hubs ordered chicken egg foo young lunch with wonton soup and an egg roll. The broth of the soup was very good as was the wonton. Yes only one wonton but it was a small bowl. I ordered chicken dumplings to share and rare steak pho to go as well as a taro boba. The dumplings were fresh, hot and bland as was the dipping sauce. I had also asked to try the hot n sour soup. It was very bland with a very strong starch flavor. Either potato or corn it just was not good. The egg foo young was also very bland and the sauce served with it was also very strongly flavored with starch. The egg roll was also bland. Brought the pho home and heated up the broth on the stove before pouring the boiling liquid over the rare steak and noodles. The broth was sooooooo salty. My husband literally cannot eat this because he has a heart condition that could be triggered eating this much salt. The noodles were way over cooked and the steak was sliced very thick and therefore not tender. It was not a good meal and unfortunately we will not be back. The two stars were strictly for the service. Food gets zero. read more

This place is truly a little gem, the staff is incredibly kind & friendly. Generally speaking the food comes out extremely fast, and so delicious! The food is consistent and you can expect the same thing each time. There's no guessing if you'll "like it this time or not". Sometimes the service can get slow but they always pay attention to detail and serve incredible meals. If you have allergies and have trouble finding Chinese/Vietnamese food that fits your needs - look no further! They will fully understand and respect all your dietary needs and desires. From the outside the building can turn you off, but inside there are nice wood floors - and order the sake! It's comes in a gorgeous carafe. Moving here from NYC, I didn't expect this small restaurant that serves both Chinese and Vietnamese cuisine to impress. Was I wrong. The pho here is amazing! Flavorful broth without MSG and sugar. The family is of Chinese and Vietnamese heritage and that's why they serve both. I have only eaten the pho here but friends I have brought who have ordered the Chinese food say it is just okay, hence some low-star reviews here. If you like pho, try it here. I used to go to Black Pepper Pho in Boulder at least once per week and liked it. But they use so much sugar. After trying the real thing here, I haven't been back. Plus, Double Happy actually has tendon if you're of the more adventurous type :) read more

They serve Vietnamese pho there too.) - Calm, ambient atmosphere - Recently remodeled - Open late Cons: - Dim lighting - Lack of actual employees gives the restaurant a slightly less polished, "unprofessional" appearance - Sometimes inattentive to customer needs - Long wait times. Seriously, sometimes looooong. * * * * * Having only experienced the recently renovated Double Happy, I can't say much for its previous state, but I have heard that it's currently remodeled interior is a MAJOR step up from the past. So if you haven't eaten in, I would give it a try! :) That being said, I'm still undecided as to whether or not I love or loathe the apparent deserted-ness of the restaurant. To be fair, I must somehow unconsciously avoid peak dinner-hour times since whenever I've eaten there (usually around 5:30pm on a Friday night, or later in the evening on a weekday), it's usually deserted, aside from a few walk-ins ordering pick-up. HOWEVER, I have heard it can get packed. As in, they-will-actually-turn-you-away-from-the-restaurant-packed. (You have been warned.) For a casual eatery, I remain relatively neutral about the service; I don't expect some high class waiter with a towel over his arm attending to my every whim, but I do wish they would be more attentive with refilling water, or giving us napkins, etc. On the upside, if they remember your quirks, they are happy to oblige them--for example, the owner knows of my repugnance for yellow onions, and they make sure not to include them in my pho, or other dishes that I order. Little perks like that are a definite plus. The food is wonderful, and that's still an understatement. From their tapas (get the garlic mushrooms, they're to die for) to their dum sum, to their delicious MSG-free pho and other more-traditional Chinese dishes, I have never experienced a dish there that I didn't like. It's always hot and fresh with overindulgent portions of food so I always have leftovers for the next day! But I feel like that's typical with every Chinese restaurant...unless you're P.F. Changs. Grrr. NOTE: As a self-proclaimed connoisseur of pho, I feel obligated to add this caveat to fellow pho-worshippers out there. Yes, the pho here is delicious. And size-wise, it's probably the equivalent of a medium. But note that the pricing is almost double compared to pho chains (like Pho Duy and Pho 79 on 120th and Main St...ish), and takes nearly three times as long. Am I just too-used to "fast-food" pho? Probably. I also understand that since they don't specialize in pho, they probably don't have great vats of it in back for quick-and-easy service like the other restaurants do. But I can't help but be a little disgruntled having to pay 10-13 dollars for my pho when the broth is less hearty than I'm used to and there are definitely less less condiments offered. (Mint and lemongrass lovers, you will probably be disappointed). But I digress. Really, the only complaints I have would revolve around the wait time. I'm still bristling over that one time I had to wait for two hours for my meal, only to go up to the desk and be informed that they were out of the ingredients for my dish. I get that it was probably a bafflingly busy day both in-house and with deliveries, but please don't make me wait for two hours for nonexistent food. Just let me know before I sink into a starvation-induced murderous rage. (Kidding.) Even if it appears deserted in house, the number of deliveries can spike up the wait time exponentially so it can be frustrating waiting thirty-plus minutes for your food when you're the only one sitting there. It's probably psychological, and really I'm just being nit-picky now, but it's always nagged at me for some reason. Also, it might do them well to stock more ingredients on-site. It's been multiple times now when they've ran out of something or another for their dishes, then had to deny their customers the deliciousness. With how successful they seem to be, I have to wonder why they're continually running out of common ingredients...? THE BOTTOM LINE: While it can be seriously frustrating having to wait for your food, it's worth it. Seriously, it is DELICIOUS. And, since usually the restaurant is empty, it's a great place to chill out in a social setting without dealing with the typical white-noise of miscellaneous conversation, babies brawling (random note: I meant to say "bawling" there, but I think I'm going to intentionally leave it as is, haha), and the general noise of the establishment, all unfortunate side-effects when dining out. The food quality alone bumps this restaurant up to a delicious 4 stars! read more

Double Happy is kind of a special spot for us in a strange, quirky way for its 'so terrible it is funny' customer service. We go there in good spirits, expect to be ignored for a long time, just enjoy sitting together and eat the food when they come. Our joke started with our first visit to Double Happy, about two years ago. We live in Boulder, decided to explore Louisville on our Friday night date, and walked upon the restaurant with such positive sounding name. We thought, yeah let's try it! We walked in, there were 2 young people right at the hostess stand, working on 1 bag of take-out order. The door made noise when we came in, and we were standing right in front of them, but they did not look up, for about full five minutes. We were so shocked, we were giggling. Finally someone else came out of the kitchen and said very calmly 'hello dinner for two?' We were seated. The server seemed somewhat smiley, but taking order was the only time we saw her. When the food came, a young man just dropped the food and left with no interaction. We didn't have utensils to eat. We couldn't find anyone coming anywhere close to our table for a long time. I stood up finally and went to hunt out for someone to give us utensils. Found the same guy, he handed me the utensils, I went back to the table. Now I realized I wanted some hot chili paste. This time, we knew not to hope for anyone coming by to check on us, so my boyfriend stood up this time and went on a journey. Called for the guy who was hanging out in the back and asked for the chili. The guy asked 'where is your table?' which was really funny - because - there were only two tables in the entire restaurant at the time. One big table of 7 or so, all Chinese family, and another table of us 2. My boyfriend was the only caucasian male guest there. We really thought this lack of service was funny as heck and actually had a good time giggling about it throughout the meal. We ate, then we patiently waited for the next move. Bill. Which never came, as we predicted. More laughs. Eventually people a few tables away from us were paying, and another worker was dropping their credit card off at their table. She did not look in our direction at all, although we were looking at her so intently, it was probably burning her skin. So we said 'excuse me!' She looked at us, said nothing but nodded, which at this point was better than what we had before - nothing and nobody. You really would had to be there with us to appreciate the comic of all this. It was great! Then she came with our bill, we had our card ready - we knew not to miss the opportunity to move this payment forward. She came back again with receipt for us to sign. During this transaction, she never got closer than a few feet from our table for some reason. She almost threw the bill and card to us with her hand extended very far to reach the very edge of the table. She didn't say a word, and didn't even really look at us. We just hoped she was not somehow in a bad situation. We signed, and we proceeded to walk through the front area, where 3 young workers were standing around. None of them acknowledged us or greeted in any way, and we walked out the door with a perfect service-less dining experience. As we exited and reached the outside street, we both broke into a hysterical laugh, and Double Happy became our little special place. We even endear this restaurant for the strangest reason. Oh, by the way, we thought the food was fine. But we go there for the *special* experience. ps: I do have to say, our first visit was definitely the most eccentric of all. I had a terrible experience with delivery from Double Happy. I urge those who may be deciding whether to order from here to chose another place, perhaps Saigon Dragon just off of 136th and Huron. My order was placed at 5:47pm on a Friday, starting with my asking if they deliver to my address. They do, they said, to which I proceeded with my order for three adults and a child. The call lasted three minutes, with a total twice of what I expected ($80), and a promise of food delivered in "about an hour." After 90 minutes of waiting, I called to ask about my order. They asked my address and answered my investigation with "they're driving," and that ended the conversation. 10 minutes later the driver arrived. It's a 20 minute drive from Double Happy to my house, but happened to take the delivery 100 minutes. I decided not to tip. For one, I couldn't afford it given the total; for another, the delivery was outside the bounds of service deserving of gratuity. After hearing the door bell, I thanked the driver, signed the receipt, and closed the door wishing him a good night. After a few moments, I heard the doorbell again. The delivery driver held the receipt and pen in hand, and said, not asked, "You didn't put down a tip." I replied that I didn't, that I couldn't afford it, and he said "it's a large order, and a ten mile delivery." I replied again that I couldn't afford it so there would be no tip. He asked again for a tip. I replied no, wished him a good night, and closed the door. On the subject of the food, my mistake was forgetting to mention an allergy to mushrooms. For that, I cannot blame them for the absurd number of mushrooms in the children's Lo Mein or the entree Lo Mein. I will blame them for the missing containers of fried rice, as each entree comes with one, and of the four entrees we ordered, we received two. I will also blame them for the quality of their sesame chicken, of which we ordered two, and of which neither were edible. Finally, though the boba tea was a luxury choice, a treat, one was frozen, and both had firm boba balls which were equally unappetizing. Not one of us felt well after the meal, no satisfaction and with upset stomachs all around. I wouldn't be upset with a late delivery but a fair price. I wouldn't be upset with lower quality food but a lower price point. I would even be fine with this price point if the food were good and the delivery were close to on time. But for bad food, with a worse price, a rude delivery person, sickness afterward, and over 40 minutes late, I cannot, in good conscience, go without telling others of this experience, that it might help another stay away from this restaurant. read more

Being Asian and having lived in and spend time in the San Francisco bay area, I consider myself a Chinese Food Snob. Double Happy has the best 1) Shimp in Lobster Sauce, 2) Spicy Sesame Chicken, and 3) Lomein. Period. Better than any I've had in SF. I highly recommend trying those 3 items if you want to taste real good Chinese food. I would give 5 stars if the service and food preparation speed was better.
