Chicken dosa
Jazzy13023 J.

This place is for real ! If you want an authentic dosa you should visit this place. We had a couple of the chicken dosa's . And it was well done . The Dosa is nice and crisp and stuffing inside had a nice tangy spicy flavour to it . A couple of things that will make peef about this place is that it's a bit small . It does not have handicap access and the first step to visit this place is quite high . So it's not really wheel chair accessible. For Friday nights you have to leave your name and number at the receptionist and they put you on the waiting list . We didn't wait long . For a group of 5, the fit us in within 20 minutes . There is no telephone reservation . The dosa is amazing although .

Couple of my friends raved about this place for the longest time. My sister and I were in the neighborhood, so we decided to have our lunch there. The restaurant is very simple. Few tables and chairs. The owner was our server, very helpful, despite not asking for it. He goes through the details of the food. I can see he is very passionate and knowledgeable about the food. When I saw the menu, I got overwhelmed to see the extensive of list of the menu. I asked our server to help us to choose one. My little sister chose a spicy chicken dosa. The server kept asking her if she is sure of her order because it's spicy. It was getting annoying. Finally, we got our dosas! Omg... it was absolutely a delish! It made us forget the annoying server. Especially, the spicy chicken dosas was the best! All I would say, to be patient with the owner's talking, do go there for the most delicious dosas.

A cash only place. Wanted to try South Indian in Montreal and found this place. The masala dosa and Vada were perfect. The sambar could be a little more thicker. The chutney were good. I would say it's value for your money. For 6 Canadian dollars you get dosa is a good deal. So those who travel from the US like me, they don't accept American cards. Either you need have a Canadian debit card or cash.

Excellent food! Everything we ordered was top notch! We had - masala dosa -Mysore dosa - rasam idli (super soft idlis) - chicken biryani (very few pieces but tasty) - mango lassi The place is really tiny, and there is almost always waiting! But it's soo worth it!

I don't know much about south Indian food but went there because of a friend and was delighted by the food. First I had a spicy lamb dosa which was amazing, freshly cooked and crispy with pieces of lamp inside. Liked it so much that ordered after that the lamb biryani, it was nice but perhaps it's not for everybody and had too much lamb at that point, lol. Overall we were really satisfied at the end and really full for a great price. The place is ok, not much decor and kinda small, but the service is nice. They don't accept credit cards.

My favorite place for south indian food. The prices are great, food authentic and fresh. I do not miss being in India when I am here. The variety for dosas is huge. And I would recommend trying their rasam instead of sambhar when you irder idli or vada. I also love the spring rolls here. Best value for money a place can offer with customized and attentive service.

But I decided to spice things up a bit and try the special tiffin; my goodness gracious it did not disappoint. This is a really scrumptious spread: delicious perfectly spiced sambar and 2 chutneys are the showstoppers, they are surrounded by beautiful and elaborate dishes like pongal, medhu vada, idli, and the scrumptious buttery sweet to top it all off. Pongal is a sacred dish, served during the eponymous Tamil harvest festival and can be made sweet or savoury; it is the epitome of Tamil comfort food. The savoury version is served with the special tiffin. The fermented flour of mixed rice and lentil is so delicately flavoured with ghee, cashew, fenugreek, asafoetida, peppercorn, fresh kari leaves, cumin, and ginger. It is simmered to perfection. I tried the podi idli. Podi is a coarse mixed spice powder made with ground dry spices that typically contains dried chilis, black gram, chickpeas, salt and sesame seeds. The spice mix is commonly referred to in informal speech as "gunpowder" or chutney powder and is mixed with melted ghee. Now that's the breakfast of champions. Holy utapam, Kumar, I'm gonna eat your face off. Imagine if utapam replaced the main actor in the film Face Off. I would totally go do a face off for some utapam. My go-to utapam is the tomato chilly garlic onion utapam. You'll love it.

Their butter chicken is incredible. It is jam packed with flavour and spices. It is a perfect meal on a wintery evening. The lentils are also delicious. They do not skip out on the portion sizes as well as the amount of actual lentils in the dish which is nice. The naan bread is incredible. There's always some crunch as well as some fluff to it. The texture is amazing. The chicken tikka was a new dish that I tried this time. It came out sizzling hot, full of steam. There were green peppers, onions and large portions of chicken. It was also delicious, full of great flavour. Overall, this restaurant is amazing! The staff is friendly and kind and the food is delicious.

It's towards the top of Old Montreal so we had a nice walk to and from the restaurant. We were greeted by the host and sat down immediately. The restaurant inside was very pretty and had low lighting to make it look very intimate. I'd definitely consider Veranda a fine-dining Indian restaurant. We ordered the samosa tarts and malai chicken tikka from the appetizers and both were absolutely delicious! We also ordered mango lassi, butter chicken, and garlic naan (all automatic orders for us when we go to Indian restaurants) and none of them disappointed. However, we were a little disappointed that they didn't have a few menu items that we see back home or at other Indian restaurants like onion bhaji, pakora, biryani and tandoori chicken. The only complaint we had was the service wasn't that great. Our order was taken a few minutes after viewing the menu and the staff was very friendly but after we finished our appetizers, we felt neglected as other tables were served their food and we were waiting 25-30 minutes to get served our main dish. We had to let the server know that we were done our appetizers and ready for the main dish. I'm not sure if this is normal in Montreal or at Indian restaurants in Montreal? Other restaurants we were served our courses immediately one after the other, with maybe 5-10 minutes in between. It wasn't busy either for a Wednesday night where they only had 3-4 tables. Regardless, we would recommend Veranda to anyone craving Indian food who wants to eat in Old Montreal! The food is delicious!

The lunch buffet had both vegetarian and non veg offerings. I took a picture of everything but the basmati rice which was good. The standout items would be the mulligatawny soup, the butter chicken curry, the tandoori chicken which was super tender and well spiced and the lamb curry which was perfectly cooked. For dessert they had three choices and I tried them all. Gulab jamon was nicely spiced and not too sweet with a firm crumb. And the rice pudding was standout delicious with large green cardamom pods visibly floating in the pudding. There was a melange of other spices too. It was very nice. I want to mention there were layered spices in all the food which is the mark of a good chef. The price was very reasonable at $30 cad. With tax it was $5 more. Perfect for a super fresh and delicious lunch. I could not eat all the offerings but what I had was all good. I did not like the samosas. Too much potato. And I would have liked more peas and spices. I thought the garlic tandoori naan pretty good, but I REALLY enjoyed the yellow dahl tarka I ordered, as well as the samosas, and all the chutneys and sauces. I've been going here for at least 5 years and I'll be the first person to tell you that the quality of the food has not diminished despite its newfound popularity among those outside of Parc Ex. I live in The Sud-Ouest and never regret making the commute out to indulge with my boyfriend or wow out-of-town guests who have never experienced the magic of a good thali. Let's dig into a typical visit to Chand Palace: it doesn't matter what time of day it is, there will always be a crowd already inside. Don't let this dishearten you. I promise it is worth the wait (and the line always moves fast!). Once inside, you'll be greeted with menus and on the house papadum to snack on while you make your decision. I recommend indulging in an order of pakoras or onion bhajis along with your main meal. It's a lot of food, and you'll have leftovers to bring home, but their deliciously crispy apps are not to be missed. The thali is always worth it, for lunch or for dinner (the price increases a bit at dinner time). You never know what dishes you'll get, but it makes every visit exciting -- and it's a great way to ensure you're always trying something new even if you fall into the habit of going to Chand for every occasion (guilty). My personal favourite is the shahi paneer. I've yet to find another Indian restaurant to make it so creamy and delightful! Every time I leave Chand Palace, I'm amazed by the quality-to-price ratio. I'm not exaggerating when I say you can take a group of 5 out to a dinner for under $75. This makes for a great economical trick when you want to treat your out-of-town guests to a delicious meal on you!
