I encourage you to visit, and see for yourself how nice it is and ask if you qualify. There are no high-pressure sales, just a polite personalities that really wants to help you find a solution. What is Simpson Place? It is an assisted living and skilled nursing community that offers care and support for low- and moderate-income senior adults. I assure you that this location looks & feels like an upscale hotel. You are greeted by friendly faces when you step in the door. The lobby is spacious and full of energy. The dining area is open, beautifully decorated, and clean. Even though I did not get to see the food, the menu offered healthy and alternative options. The community space had comfortable seating, by a bookcase and fireplace, very nice! The activities room was large and obviously used often. A resident said hello and expressed how much she enjoys living there (that was a huge plus!). As a resident, you get a 1 bedroom studio apartment. It's comforting to know that if skilled nursing is needed at some point, that service is available in the same building. I visited the rehab area and could see that the equipment was new, clean, the overall setup was impressive. What you really want to know is ... how much does it cost? Maybe nothing! Let Cory work with you and discover what you qualify for. In my case, I was thrilled to learn they accept Molina and Superior Star Plus waiver (Medicaid programs). You can certainly do private pay which is 3,000 a month. Either way, this includes the utilities, cable, wifi, housekeeping, daily activities, three meals a day plus 24\7 security. The staff taking care of your loved ones are all licensed CNA'S, CMA'S and LVN'S, who also manage the medications. In addition, there is a doctor who visits the communities. I was also impressed early on, especially with Nan who was responsive and helpful in answering all my questions. Things started off okay, but one issue showed up pretty quickly. My mom uses a wheelchair and needed help getting to and from the dining room. Staff would take her down for meals, and when she was ready to return to her room, she'd press the button on her fob for assistance. On multiple occasions, she was left waiting alone in the dining room for over an hour. This was frustrating and embarrassing for her. There was also a staff member who pushed my mom to do more than she was physically capable of. Something happened (I was never told exactly what), but I was informed that the person was written up and instructed not to go back to my mom's room. Additionally, Nan stopped replying to my emails, and messages to other staff were often ignored too. We had an initial meeting where I was told I'd be introduced to all the department heads. Only a couple of people showed up; apparently my mom wasn't considered important enough for the full team. The director, Tom, was not present and I had no contact with him until I gave notice to move my mom elsewhere. To her credit, Sandra, who managed my mom's floor, was always responsive to my emails and phone calls. However, about a year into my mom's stay, she called to tell me they could no longer meet my mom's needs. She said that my mom now needed more than two people to assist with transfers. I asked how much time I had to find a new facility, and she said, "About two weeks." That's not what the contract says, but at that point, I didn't want my mom to stay somewhere that couldn't or wouldn't care for her properly. My mom later told me they'd recently hired a bunch of new staff who weren't well trained, so sometimes it would take 3 or 4 of them to transfer her. They would also gather in her room to chat with each other. Ironically, just a few days after Sandra's call, I saw one of the experienced caregivers transfer my mom by herself, quickly and with care. When I asked her how she did it, she smiled and said, "Patience." I found another facility and scheduled my mom's move for a Sunday. Since her birthday was the day before, I asked about reserving a room for a small celebration. I was told that due to Covid concerns, no rooms were available. That was fine; I told my mom's friends we'd meet outside on the patio to play it safe. Several of her guests, most of whom were senior citizens, told me that Laura (the activities director) raised her voice at them and told them they weren't allowed to be there. She also raised her voice at me. I explained we were outside and following all the rules, but it didn't seem to matter. The whole thing left a really bad taste. After we moved my mom out and cleared her room, I asked when I'd receive the refund for the unused portion of the month's rent. I mentioned that I had accidentally taken her fob and would return it as soon as I could. Tom implied I wouldn't be refunded for the days I had the fob, which seemed petty, but the facility eventually processed the full refund. Still, it wasn't the kind of support I needed during such a stressful transition. To be fair, some staff were wonderful. Kam, TT, Cynthia, and Willis were kind, respectful, and truly cared about my mom. The maintenance guys and housekeeping team were always polite and helpful. Thankfully, my mom is now in a facility that truly values her. They care for her with patience and compassion. When friends visit, they're welcomed, not scolded. Phone calls and emails are returned. When my mom needs help, she gets it within minutes, versus hours. She's happy now, and that makes me happy too. (It should be noted that I took a tour of Monticello West's sister facility, Autumn Leaves, as recommended by Sandra. It reeked of urine and was one of the most depressing places I have ever visited.) Looking back, I wish I'd installed a camera in her room at Monticello West from day one. If you have a loved one there, I strongly recommend you do.

    My father-in-law spent his final 9 months at Avalon's Royal Circle residence, and from the very…read morefirst phone call we found them quite knowledgeable and experienced with Parkinson's disease in addition to the more traditional forms of dementia. They helped us understand the progression of late-stage Parkinson's and the Lewy Body Dementia that often accompanies it. The residence manager, Misha, has apparently been in charge there for over 18 years now and has seen most everything and knows how to manage residents, medical situations and families in addition to Covid protocols. She is strong and highly capable, communicative and caring. She and the rest of the staff were very willing to cooperate with the nurses and therapists that visited Dad frequently and to carry on any therapies that they prescribed. You only have to encourage the therapists to teach the staff whatever it is they would like them to do. Avalon has a good relationship with a PA working under authority of a Dr to meet medical needs that arise at the home if you choose to use those services. While the communication with the PA must be done through the Avalon staff, several times they responded to same-day visit needs and were able to arrange in-home x-rays, labs and other services as well as to provide prescription orders. Avalon prefers to use Glenview Professional Pharmacy, which is the best local pharmacy in the long-term care business, I learned from experiences with my own parents. Go with them. Toward the end, we decided to use Total Hospice which has a good relationship with Avalon. They, too, said that from all the places they go to provide hospice services, Avalon's Royal Circle was one of the very best and most communicative when the resident had a need. Having had my own parents in Assisted Living (AL) for a number of years, I was quite impressed with the value that Avalon provided. My father-in-law received a very high level of care for a single all-inclusive monthly cost that was identical to my mother's cost for AL with minimal added services in a Northern suburb. To get that level of service in an AL facility would have cost thousands more, if it was even available. Skilled nursing would have cost almost double, and full-time home care even more than that. My mother-in-law would have preferred to be her husband's caregiver but that was simply impossible with his high level of need. She had experienced having Aides at the house and how it felt invasive and she still exhausted herself giving care. Ultimately he would have been confined to bed at home, whereas at Avalon he could get help from two people to get dressed and up to enjoy meals at the dining table, TV in the recliners as well as conversation with the staff. They were skilled in redirecting and calming him when hallucinations or delusions would agitate him. I think the highest praise is the fact that my mother-in-law feels she made the right decision and has peace about it now that he is gone.

    My wife was at this facility for about a year in 2023 to 2024. She apparently fell in the bathroom…read moreone night when the aides got her up to use the bathroom. The night aides dragged her from the bathroom and put her back in bed even though she was in obvious pain. The aides did not alert management, write up an incident report, or notify hospice, emergency services, or me. I would not have know what happened except I had a camera in the bedroom. Video is available showing the aides dragging her back to her bed. The rooms and common area were not kept particularly clean. Bathrooms where not kept clean. My advice is to look elsewhere for a suitable facility for your loved one.

The ONLY reason I input my zip code, my name, my email AND phone number was because it totally implied I would be able to "find the best options in my area." The wording of this totally implies you will be given EMAIL info, which you may go through and talk with them when you're ready. NO NO NO NO NO!!!!! The fine print says: "By sharing your contact information, you agree to our Terms of Use and Privacy Policy. You also consent to receive texts and calls from us and our community customers; however your consent is not a condition to using our service, but we cannot refer you without your contact information. etc..." The writing is so small you don't know it exists. BUT ONCE YOU PRESS THAT BUTTON, LITERALLY WITHIN 10 SECONDS THEY WILL BE CALLING THE NUMBER YOU INPUT. THEY DO NOT TELL YOU THIS!!!! Now why would that be? Because they don't want to be honest upfront. That is WRONG!!! So, Dorna is calling asking for me. I asked her to just email me the info. NO. THEY WILL NOT EMAIL or send ANY info until you provide MORE info. How this works is Place for Mom and many other places like this, pay to join this huge US group who has the data in each state. Place for Mom gets paid when you go through their website and they actually set you up. If they just em you info, they cannot keep track. So, it's TOTALLY ABOUT PLACE FOR MOM (and many others) and the care places who join the group MAKING $$$$$$$$$!!!!! She actually told me they cannot help me unless I provide more info and go through their counseling. THEY disseminate the info. You put in your info; they call you and ask what company you went through. Finders fee. This Dorna woman actually had the nerve to say I was "the first person to ever complain about them contacting me." LIAR. Look at Willow R's review from year 2014, she complained about them even 11 years ago!! They are data mining and making it appear one way, just to switch to another. They will sell your information too. I told the woman if I get one email or another phone call, I am going to file a formal complaint to my state. And I will. Recommend you do a zip code search on your own. This way too, the places you call aren't necessarily paying to be promoted by them too. They will be actual places you can seek out on your own. They are not ALL represented by Place for Mom - only the ones who pay to play. Which means their rates will be higher because they're paying services to list them too. Nobody has ever complained before? Sure...

We were seeking a place that not only had the expertise in memory care but also the compassion and consistency required to support someone living with Alzheimer's. Despite the significantly higher cost compared to her previous residence, we believed Iris would provide a higher standard of care, and we were willing to make that investment for my mother's well-being. Unfortunately, our experience did not align with the promises made. We were assured of specialized programs, including a hydration program, consistent engagement through activities and volunteer opportunities, and a staff trained in memory care. In reality, many of these services were either inconsistently provided or not implemented at all. For example, the so-called hydration program amounted to no more than staff occasionally placing water nearby, with no structured monitoring or documentation. Similarly, volunteer opportunities--something my mother was eager and capable of doing--were only offered a handful of times over six months. The quality and consistency of care were major concerns. Daily activities listed on the calendar often didn't happen. Housekeeping was lacking--I had to request basic laundry and bathroom cleaning repeatedly, and some items like her bath mats had to be thrown out due to mold. The shower setup was unsafe, with poor lighting and water going everywhere. There was also no consistency in where my mother's laundry or personal items were returned to in her room, despite me explaining repeatedly how important routine and predictability are for someone with memory loss. My mom would spend entire days and nights in her room with no encouragement from staff to join activities (other than meal time), most of the time she was going to bed fully dressed and with out her teeth brushed. More concerning were the medical and safety issues. There was an incident where my mother was on the floor for over an hour after slipping from her bed. Staff failed to assess her condition or even document the event. I had this all on camera and offered to provide it to Stephanie, the Director, she declined. A severe UTI went untreated for two weeks despite multiple requests made to order a urinalysis to Raye, the nurse, and for the doctor to visit her. I eventually had to call in an outside provider to intervene. When their doctor finally made time, Dr. McLeroy evaluated her for a URI not a UTI. Even more troubling, on another occasion the nurse Raye, continued to give her a medication for three months after the doctor had discontinued it due to serious side effects, resulting in terrifying hallucinations. This was not a minor oversight--it reflected a consistent breakdown in communication and care protocols. While there are a few staff members who were genuinely kind and patient, many others seemed overwhelmed, undertrained, or disengaged. I was deeply disappointed to discover that much of the glowing feedback online appears to come from staff or affiliates rather than families of residents. At one point, I walked in to find staff actively asking for 5-star reviews--not because of excellence in care, but as part of a competition with another facility. I did try to work with Stephanie, the Director, to resolve these issue before ultimately making the decision to move my mom. In reality, nobody should be spending over 50K in 6 months and still have to beg for the staff to help their loved one, to do her laundry, to engage her, to help her with personal care needs, to properly and safely medicate her. This experience has been heartbreaking. I truly hoped Iris Memory Care would live up to the compassionate and professional image they initially presented. If the care promised had been delivered, this could have been an exceptional place. I strongly encourage families to install a camera in their loved one's room and to advocate consistently. Transparency and accountability are essential, especially in memory care.

I have only experienced the best in the care, support, resident activities, communications and involvement the staff has given to my husband ... and to me! The staff gives me detailed feedback on my husband's progress and also provides me educational background for dealing, as a caregiver, with a loved one's dementia. Dementia is an insidious disease and requires knowledgeable and trained staffing to manage the required, individual care. I feel Iris has exceeded my expectations and I am continually grateful for finding a place for my husband that I can totally trust.
