    Half Chicken - Spicy Berbere
    Jacqueline T.

I think my husband found this spot on TikTok and we both wanted to try it next time we were in Philly. We shared: - Half Chicken, Lemon Turmeric - Half Chicken, Spicy Berbere The fried chicken was fantastic. I loved both seasonings. The spicy was probably my favorite. It wasn't all that spicy, but it was flavorful. If you like fried chicken, I'd highly recommend checking this spot out.

I had a great experience at Doro Bet and really appreciated that everything is cooked fresh to order--you can definitely taste the difference, especially in the crispness of the chicken. We tried a variety of dishes, but the Spicy Chicken was probably my favorite (7.5/10), even though I didn't find it all that spicy. The Collard Greens were excellent with a nice touch of sweetness (8/10), while the Mac & Cheese wasn't quite my style since it leaned a bit dry (6/10). Not pictured is the Chicken Shawarma wrap, which I really enjoyed (8.5/10). It's not the most traditional Ethiopian restaurant, but the food was flavorful and I'd definitely go back.

Trendy and delicious, this Ethiopian spot in West Philly delivers great chicken and assorted halal dishes. I spotted endless Instagram reels promoting its fried chicken specifically, so my primary focus was seizing some of its renowned wings. The space itself is intimate, but they also provide a large carry-out footprint. When I visited on a Saturday, I waited about 15 minutes for my order of their half awaze-spiced chicken. I felt that the seasoning was superb and the chicken itself was a great value for its price. I personally wish it was a bit spicier, but that's just preference as its quality was still excellent. Your order will likely take time to be prepared, but the staff is courteous and makes a lot of effort to acknowledge the impact that Doro Bet has received from the community. Definitely a spot to try, including the shawarma for me next time.

So I had to try this viral fried chicken that's been all over the internet. Doro Bet is a woman-owned Ethiopian Chicken House located in the busy University City neighborhood in West Philly. It's a moderately sized take-out spot with an eat-in options. The tables are for parties of two (2). A bit crammed, but the space is easy to navigate. The sign on the entry door lets you know that the food may take up to 15 minutes to prepare while you wait. That was perfect for me because I wanted mine hot. I opted for the WHOLE chicken-which consisted of 6 pieces ( 2 thighs, 2 wings, and 2 drumsticks). I couldn't decide which sauce to get, so I got three. By the way, the sauce is not included with the chicken. Although they were only $.50 each, I think you should get a least 1 with your order. Nonetheless, I went with Mitmita Aioli, Hot Honey, and Garlic Aioli. The chicken was hot and very juicy (Not greasy). The thighs were crunchier than the drumsticks, and the tips of the wings were crunchy. I thought they were OK. If I had to rate them from 1-5, I'd give them a solid 3 because I thought it lacked the flavor I was looking for. The HOT HONEY was the best sauce to me because it had more flavor and a nice heat to it. It paired nicely with the chicken. Overall, it was very busy for an early afternoon. Many people called in their orders and were in and out picking up platters and such. They also had a Ramadan Package for $20 which included 1/2 fried chicken along with two sides and a salad. If you are ever in the neighborhood, you should stop by and give it a try for yourself. Let me know what you think. Til we eat again....

A Small Ethiopian place with wonderful options. You will be greeted with warm energy, and the food will be on point. If you are familiar with Ethiopian food, you're in for a treat. If you haven't tried it yet, go ahead; you will not regret it. The portions are reasonable at a good price, yielding good value. This one's a winner.

My child and their partner have recommended this restaurant very highly, they live right around the corner and order often. Gluten-free fried Mushrooms?? Yes, please!! Gluten-Free Tres Leches?? HOLY MOLY are you serious? Gimme ... Everything was delicious. We don't eat meat so having the mushroom option was a delight. They were crunchy and tasty, made with Teff flour and it added some extra tasty flavor. The dessert? That Tres Leches was heaven in my mouth. You know when you go somewhere and the owners exude great energy? This is what we got here. I felt like I was at my friend's house for a meal. I cannot recommend it enough.

The chicken sandwhich was a little dry but otherwise it was very delicious. I also tried the fries with hot honey and I loved the seasoning and crisp of the Fries. There are multiple tables and seating areas but you order first and then find a seat. My friend was very excited because it's hard to find a gluten free fried chicken place and said she was very happy that she was able to eat good fried chicken

I have been wanting to try Doro Bet for awhile. Ordered take out. 1/2 fried chicken (9/10 seasoned very well), Mac & cheese (6/10 no cheese pull and a little bland), and greens ( 4/10 texture a bit mushy and the seasoning was not enjoyable ). I will admit that I never had Ethiopian food ( I eat West African food) before and maybe that is why my pálate could not enjoy the spices / seasonings. I will make an effort to try other Ethiopian Cuisine and then visit Doro Bet again!

I finally got around to trying this place, and out of the three restaurants from the Ali family, this one has become one of my favorites. It's a small spot with a nice seating area, clean atmosphere, and the service is always efficient and quick. I've been here a few times now. My first experience was through Uber Eats. While I loved the crunchy texture and juiciness of the fried chicken, I found it lacking the signature spicy awaze seasoning, it could have used a bit more. However, the quality and texture of the chicken were so good that I decided to give it another try, and I'm glad I did! Since then, I've dined in a few times and tried several items, including the greens, falafel salad, Addis fries, doro wot, fried mushrooms and the amazing fried chicken. With recent orders I've found that the fried chicken is well seasoned, spicy but not overly so. It's tender, juicy, and perfectly crunchy. The fried mushrooms were a nice alternative, with great texture and crunch, but I probably wouldn't get them again as the chicken had more flavor. I was pleasantly surprised by the greens! Many Ethiopian restaurants don't season their greens much, but since this place blends Ethiopian and Black American cuisines, the greens here were packed with flavor, definitely a nice change. The falafel salad was fantastic for lunch, perfectly seasoned and so flavorful. Honestly, almost everything I've tried here has been really good! Overall, I love the fusion of Ethiopian and Black American cuisines and am really happy this place exists.

My daughter picked out Doro Bet as she was craving for African food. We drove to Cedar Park on a pleasant August Sunday. The Cedar Park area is a really cool and vibrant section of Philadelphia. We found parking right on Baltimore Ave. The restaurant's interior is very nice and extremely clean. The staff was friendly and very helpful. What we ordered: Fried Chicken Aliche (Mild) 1/2 Doro Wot Biriz drink Kerkede drink The fried chicken was very, very good. The flavor on the chicken and the crispiness was excellent. The chicken was moist on the inside. The Door Wot was also very good. A flavorful chicken stew with Ethiopian bread. The Biriz drink was interesting. It was made of Fermented Honey, Tumeric and water. At first it tasted a little odd, but it increasingly became more delicious. The Kerkede was also good and was Hibiscus tea with Cardamon. All in all this was a great eating experience and some excellent food. I would definitely return and soon also. 4.5 Yelp Stars!!!!

Tiny spot, decorated in Ethiopian maps and art. Plenty of street parking around. We were lucky to snag a table and decided to dine in. We got a half order of the turmeric lemon chicken and half order of the spicy chicken, along with collard greens and mac n cheese. Turmeric lemon was AMAZING! So flavorful. Spicy chicken was not spicy, at all. Flavor was nice but not what I expected. Mac n cheese was creamy and delicious. Greens were definitely their spin on traditional greens, interesting seasoning. They cool the chicken fresh so it's a bit of a wait but worth it!

Came with kids. The Mac n cheese probably has garlic powder in it - good flavor and kids ate it up! The fried chicken also mostly disappeared. The (hot) spice adverse kid didn't like the flavoring on the fries but the other gobbled it up. We loved the chicken sandwich. Didn't love the DORO wot wasn't to my taste (didn't know what to expect, it's a little acidic, maybe lemony?) but the chicken was well cooked and just fell apart. We came early and it was quiet and everything we needed and asked for was quickly supplied. Super nice staff, nice to sit and watch the traffic go by through the front window. Should come again!

I got 2 Too Good To Gos here. Both appropriately priced. One of the containers was very similar to a TooGoodToGo I got from Alif Brew but Doro Bet has more entree options on the regular and the food looks to be prepared in a slightly higher quality to me. So they are priced reasonably at 4.99 per deal as Alif Brew is priced at 3.99 appropriately as well. Alif's injera (I had to look up what this spongy bread was) actually has more combination of things, and it is good too. Staff is friendly. The other container was creamy macaroni and chicken. I enjoyed this serving a lot. I have heard mixed things about this place from others- sometimes the containers are a good deal and sometimes not apparently.

Here, the veggies were delicious on their own. The service was quick, probably about five minutes, and the people were kind. The space was also spacious and comfortable. I do wish it came with another piece of injera, but I'm sure you can buy extra if needed. Overall, I'd definitely come back.

EDIT: after a few weeks I read my review and realized that it comes across as generally negative…read moreeven though my opinion is very positive. I went on too long about the kitfo. Salam is a delicious place with really friendly people. Me and my family have been taking out and eating in about once a week for months. It also attracts people working with laptops, as it is quiet and there's coffee. I am returning the 5th star because why should they appear less than excellent because of one guy's opinion of one dish? Btw the kik alicha is amazingly satisfying. ---ORIGINAL REVIEW I have a lot of positive things to say about this place, and just two complaints. I'm going to skip the positive as it is all repeated here in other reviews, other than to say that while the cooking here is not 100% in the mainstream of Ethiopian cooking, meaning that you can expect the Ethiopian dishes to land some short distance from what you are used to at any other place in Philly or D.C. or NYC etc., it is nevertheless usually delicious. The wots are spiced differently than traditional, there are more middle eastern flavors in general. The first time I came, soon after they had opened, I was disoriented and disappointed, but in later visits I decided I didn't care. The injera is among the best in Philly. Complaint#1: the doro wot sauce can sometimes (only twice) verge into the realm of so intense that you don't want to eat much of it, this has to do with both salt and spices. Complaint#2: This is the one that lost a star. They won't make their Saturday kitfo raw. If you ask for it raw it will be served rare, so the meat has received enough heat to toughen the texture and remove some of the color. I did complain, because I love kitfo and it is one of the most celebrated raw beef dishes, the beef glistening with niter kibbeh butter and looking like a shiny mount of rubies. It is amazing when made according to tradition and kind of lame when Americanized, like so many ethnic speacialties. About 3/4 of the best Philly places make it right, most in D.C. I would guess that Salam is either nervous about hygiene, a real consideration unless you mince your own beef, which is labor intensive. The excuse offered was that the beef got a little cooked by the hot butter, to which the answer is, your butter is too hot. No cooking can happen with this dish. (In Ethiopia a few do slightly cook the beef, but nobody likes those people.) I urge them to do Ethiopia justice and take kitfo off the menu, or do it right. Americans have learned a lot in the past few decades. Tell them what to expect and many will be enthusiastic. It won't work if you let them expect cooked beef. That's all the negative I have, I am looking forward to my next visit for the kik alicha.
