Plus the golf cart was just fun whipping down random cobblestone streets and through crowds of people. It was a really special experience for us, and our tour guide was superb; very jocular and down to earth. As part of the tour our guide also got us into the pantheon for free and showed us around one of the local churches which had unique graphic illusions (as well as some creepy skulls/skeletons incorporated into the religious artwork). One of my favorite parts of the tour was stopping to check out Giardino degli Aranci (orange grove public square overlooking the city at night). Highly recommended.

The paintings on the ceiling were like brushstrokes from heaven. I have never seen anything more beautiful. The time attention and detail that went into creating each piece is truly astounding. What made it especially memorable was how he connected with our kids--getting them excited about gelato was a fun touch that they still talk about! The golf cart was a lifesaver, making it easy to visit several sites that would have been impossible to reach with a 5-year-old and 2-year-old in tow. We even opted for the cart to pick us up from the hotel so it was seamless from beginning to end. The car seat for our youngest was clutch. Actually the ride was so soothing that our 2 year old fell asleep for part of the trip. Chris also introduced us to the Roman Orange Garden, a peaceful spot we'd never have found on our own. While many sites in Rome are walkable, this tour gave us the freedom to explore comfortably as a family, and we truly appreciated the balance of convenience and insight. If you are someone who love to do all the research ahead of time, then maybe this tour is too surface level for you. I would recommend a more targeted tour for the Coliseum or Vatican City. But the Vatican is big, so we assumed she wanted to show us other portions of the grounds. Our tour was supposed to go until 8 PM, but she ended things at 7 PM. She said we could walk back into the last wing of the museum to see things on our own but security would not allow us to walk back in. We spent seconds / maybe minutes, looking at whole sections of art. She left almost no time to stand and look at things, everything was "ok let's keep going". Although we still enjoyed things, we definitely left extremely disappointed given the cost of the experience. (We paid 318€ for two people to tour - 60€ was the cost of the tickets, so 258€ was the cost of the tour guide.

The company is clearly much less beloved on Yelp, but my experience more than met my 4.7-star expectations. The Colosseum tour package starts at $45 a person for a basic English language tour with a large group. We went a few tiers up for a small group tour with arena floor access, and this cost us a little over $100 each, and included all tickets and fees. It was easily worth the money. The tour added a ton of value to our day of sightseeing. We met our guide Andrei at the Crown Tours office and got set up with handy audio sets, so we could hear him clearly throughout the tour. We were a small group, something like eight of us, and it was easy to get around together. The tour was around two-and-a-half hours long and entailed a good deal of walking, none of it was particularly difficult. We started at the Forum, then went to Palatine Hill, and ended at the Colosseum. A manageable, logical itinerary. Andrei was an excellent guide, knowledgeable and enthusiastic. The tour was deeply engaging and educational. What a treat to learn about the Colosseum while seated inside the arena. I gather from other reviews that not all guides are created equal, but we were very happy with Andrei. I can't speak to Crown's other offerings, but I'd highly recommend the Colosseum, Roman Forum & Palatine Hill Guided Tour. It's a wonderful way to enjoy these marvels of ancient Rome.
