Crown Tours is one of the most popular providers for Colosseum tours on GetYour Guide, with almost 75,000 ratings and a 4.7-star average for the Colosseum, Roman Forum & Palatine Hill Guided Tour. The company is clearly much less beloved on Yelp, but my experience more than met my 4.7-star expectations. The Colosseum tour package starts at $45 a person for a basic English language tour with a large group. We went a few tiers up for a small group tour with arena floor access, and this cost us a little over $100 each, and included all tickets and fees. It was easily worth the money. The tour added a ton of value to our day of sightseeing. We met our guide Andrei at the Crown Tours office and got set up with handy audio sets, so we could hear him clearly throughout the tour. We were a small group, something like eight of us, and it was easy to get around together. The tour was around two-and-a-half hours long and entailed a good deal of walking, none of it was particularly difficult. We started at the Forum, then went to Palatine Hill, and ended at the Colosseum. A manageable, logical itinerary. Andrei was an excellent guide, knowledgeable and enthusiastic. The tour was deeply engaging and educational. What a treat to learn about the Colosseum while seated inside the arena. I gather from other reviews that not all guides are created equal, but we were very happy with Andrei. I can't speak to Crown's other offerings, but I'd highly recommend the Colosseum, Roman Forum & Palatine Hill Guided Tour. It's a wonderful way to enjoy these marvels of ancient Rome. read more

We had Daniele V as our tour guide and he was great! We did a 3 hour tour starting at 10am. He easily guided us through and was very knowledgeable on all the stops. It went by quickly and we saw many great things along the way! We did the add on Basilica and we got to skip the lines and go straight in with our tour guide. Overall great experience! read more

We booked a 3 hour tour of Colisseum, Forum and Palantine Hill with Crown Tours via Viator. They are not a scam company as negative reviews say. Due to the insane crowds at these sights, the tours run on very exact schedules. They are very clear that you need to be on time and that you need proper ID. My negative experience was with our horrible guide (no idea of name as he didn't introduce himself). I think they must employ dozens of guides, if not more, and I get the feeling that the guides are independent operators and not vetted by the company. Your experience will vary widely depending on the guide you get. I would go with a smaller company next time where the guides are more closely vetted. Our tour with eight people was soooo boring. It felt like a school trip. We could not interact with guide or ask any questions. We were marched by sites with no time to read signs (and no info from guide). It was basically a three hour lecture on marble and concrete. We did not feel the lecture at all related to where we were. Our guide seemed knowledgeable, but he was terrible at organizing his thoughts / story telling. Our entire group was so bored. No smiles, no laughter. His accented English was very hard to understand, especially through the earpiece. One member of our group struggled with stairs, and the guide did not point her towards the lift. It was very insensitive. We looked out for her but the guide did not. No one in our group tipped. So..Crown Tours is fine and legit, but it's russian roulette as to quality of guide. We were very disappointed with our experience. Our tour guide seemed very scatter-brained and the information he did give us, was far too specific and was repeated several times in one lecture which made us feel as though he knew less than what was advertised by the company. We were an hour into the tour before we even made it up the steps of the Colosseum. After 90 minutes we were one of two groups remaining (the tour started with 5 groups but three had already left mid-tour). We finally bowed out and proceeded exploring the Colosseum alone which was more enjoyable but we were left very disappointed and felt our money was wasted. read more

Booked through the app GetYourGuide, this tour was a group of about 25 for the Colosseum, Forum, and Palatine Hill. Met at the office just outside Colosseum. Radios given to hear tour guide. Guide spoke English. But radios used as separation can occur due to heavy traffic. Radio use is a little muffled. So, we stayed up front with the guide. Tour is very informative and our guide, Evis was outstanding. She answered questions and was very nice and patient with guests. Colosseum is amazing when you consider the age, history, and legends. Received an email and a phone call a couple days before our tour stating our time had changed because of their logistics?? I called back to confirm. Eva, our tour guide was amazing. The check in was in their office, a little walk from Colosseum but it was fine. we got introduced to Eva and she was with us for 2.5 hours. The Colosseum was spactacluar be sure to book the arena floor as well. After the Colosseum we visited the Roman Forum, If I booked again I would choose an earlier time since it was a little crowded in the afternoon, although with the skip the line option we passed a huge line to buy tickets. 100 percent reccomend. read more

We were a party of six and were astounded that a total tour of 10 people would leave without more than half the group before the scheduled start time. We Asked the organizers to call the tour guide as they had left thirty seconds before and they refused. Then the company refused to reschedule to another day, offer a refund, or provide any sort of fix. Would not suggest this tour company. Scheduled a tour for our family for the Colosseum, Forum and Palatine Hill. Very disappointing. The tour was in English but this was the guides third language. She struggled to find words which limited her effectiveness. Her English was sufficient for a casual conversation both not strong enough to lead a tour in English. The size of the group was too big..approximately 20 which made it difficult to navigate the ruins effectively, particularly in the Coliseum, which was so busy. She was often so far ahead that the audio cut out. The tour of the Colosseum was so busy that it was hard to experience the grandeur of the space. At the time end of the tour, she exited the facility to collect the audio devices, rather then collecting them prior to the exit which would have at least provided us the opportunity to explore on our own. Very disappointing. Consider an alternative to Crown Tours. They seem to focus on quantity versus quality. read more

We did the 3 hour tour of the Roman forum and the colosseum. Eva was our guide. She was phenomenal in how she managed the group, the crowd, and provided an full blown experience. We not only left having learned about what we saw, but able to actually picture life in ancient Roman times. My son and I took a Vatican small group tour. Our guide never stopped talking and she made ridiculous statements. For instance, she said Michelangelo never painted before he got the commission to do the Sistine Chapel, she then added this proves there was divine intervention in his painting. Come on. He studied painting too. He considered painting equivalent to house painting, not art, and preferred sculpting, but to tell people he never painted was unforgivable for a guide. read more

We paid extra for the arena floor and were told at the last minute it was cancelled - without reason. Our tour started late. I was visiting Rome with my family of 5 of which two are young boys ages 8 and 10. I have been to the colosseum before, but we wanted to take them there to see the colosseum. I couldn't buy just tickets for the colosseum, so I purchased tour tickets from Crown. The check in process was super easy and the location to meet the tour was very easy to find. However, because our kids are small and one with special needs I asked for us to be able to leave the group early should the tour drag on, which it did. I'm sure it was great knowledge and history for the adults, but the guide wasn't speaking to them and didn't engage them at all (which is fine and predictable). I was also under the impression we started at the colosseum and not the forum/palatine hill but instead the colosseum was left for last. About an hour in, we couldn't continue on and I asked for our tickets to the colosseum so we could take the kids and not have to wait another hour. The guide was immediately insulted, said no, then when I told him I had already asked and cleared it with management, he then proceeded to call the office (all while still mic'd up) and then he reluctantly gave us the tickets but refused to point us in the correct direction or even have any nice goodbye. He almost seemed insulted and verbally showed his distain for us. The tour company was good, but he was terrible, which ruined out experience. read more

They mixed information, and were very rude when we finally met. They tried to put all responsability on our shoulders, saying we have been late which was a lie.
