The only issue that was to be fixed was the broken cord for our tiller. Spent over $200 just for the machine to no longer work when we took it back home. We decided to bring it back and after about two weeks with no call from the shop, we had to call them and apparently, they were just about to work on it at that current time, and we would get a call back. Did not receive a call until ~2 days later to which we were told that the machine could not be fixed. It needed a new carburetor and that they were no longer being made and there was no other solution. The only good thing was that we were not ridiculously charged the second time! We went to Don's because it was requested by Menards to have a defective Troybilt tiller looked at so we could get out refund. Very slow and only looking out for Troybilt/Menards. We used the tiller once and it quit working, there were numerous issues with the spark plug and wires. First Don said that it was user error, my husband went back and showed him the issues. Then he said it had no compression and we used the wrong gas/oil. My husband checked the compression and it was fine. Finally Don admitted the machine was defective and due to the cost of repair it was not worth it. We got our original purchase price back from Menards BUT did not get the $70 we had to pay to have Don give us the run around. Since Don tried to say it was consumer error we aren't able to get the price we paid him back from Menards/Troybilt. It's the BIGGEST scam. Don't buy gas powered equipment from Menards as you can't return it without bringing it in to Don's to be scammed again. read more

So I dropped off a WORKING snowblower that need new belts for the auger. They called me back a few days later to tell me how badly it need a new carburetor. I said go ahead with the repairs (big mistake), which is what THEY recommend. They called me back after they took it apart and found out they they didn't have the part in stock and they don't make them anymore! So they tell me "Sorry, you'll just have to go buy a new one." If I could afford a new one do you think I would be trying to give my old one a tune up???? I will never be returning to Don's again!!!! I will start by saying that this place came to an agreement on a total cost but not without tensions getting high. that being said, I would NEVER let this place touch a small engine nor would I recommend this place to anybody! they charge for things they don't even do, quote you one estimate and then charge more once you pick it up. it's 5 weeks before they even look at your machine. I dropped my rider off over 6 weeks ago because the battery wouldn't keep a charge and I tried replacing it and still didn't work so thought it was a possible warranty issue so brought it to one of only 2 places in my area to get warranty work done. shoulda picked the other place! dropped it off and paid a $110 deposit. they never told me at the time they were taking 5 weeks to even look at my machine. a week later I called and asked. they said they should have told me they were 5 weeks behind and I should have seen the piece of paper on their counter that said that. told them nobody told me and I wasn't reading all the crap they had on their walls when I dropped it off. 4 weeks later I called back and they said "I was the next one in line". now..THEY don't call you! Guy says, call back later today or tomorrow and I will let you know the estimate. I call back and he says it's the battery and my estimate was $139. then he proceeds to tell me the battery is back ordered and it will be another 2 weeks! I said no way and find the battery somewhere else. he said he would try and, again, I had to call him back a couple days later! called back and he said they found a battery but it was "a little more expensive". also asked him prior to remember to sharpen the blades. he gave me a new estimate of $240. I was taken back but said go ahead and fix it. they were charging $28 PER BLADE to sharpen! so, after 6 weeks I finally get to go pick up my rider. I get there and the owner of the place tells me the total was $350 and minus my deposit, I owe $240. I showed him the messages for the estimates I was given weeks prior showing a $240 estimate not a $350 one. They tried to give me a lower estimate and then charge me a higher amount after the work was done and justified it by saying the estimate was after the deposit. explained to them that's not how estimates work. they told me $240 to fix my machine not $240 is what I would owe. I already gave them $110 so I only owed $130. they wanted to charge me $150 for a 12 volt battery and then $200 to sharpen 2 blades and 20 minutes of labor. after arguing about it I walked away giving them an additional $168 ($278 total) . they pretty much deducted the labor fees from the bill as a compromise . I got the machine home and decided to check the blades to see how sharp they were...they hadn't even been taken of the deck let alone sharpened!! they were charging me $60 plus labor fees for something they didn't even do! called them on it and told them they were crooks and that I would be posting a review about this. The owner called me an hour later saying he was gonna come pick up my rider and bring it in, sharpen the blades, and then bring it back same day. I said I wouldn't let him touch my machine again at this point. he hung up on me after a few expletives from me and deservingly so. Corey, the tech that worked on it, apologized for everything a few times, however, the owner Don and the other guy at the front desk were nothing but rude from the get go and spent the entire time coming off like this was my problem and not theirs. bottom line...do not bring any of your machines to this place. they severely mark up their parts and do way below standard work and are extremely dishonest. read more

Tried to tell me my 1 year old snowblower needed rebuilt carburetor, fuel lines and gaskets, took it elsewhere, ended up just needing fuel tank cleanup and fresh gas. When I dropped off my lawnmower 5 weeks ago, I was told it would be about a week before they were able to look at it. Two weeks ago, my lawnmower was 2nd on their list, and they would be getting to it the next day. Today, it is number 4 on their list. They might get to it tomorrow. I asked to pick up my mower but they said they would not refund my deposit. I have no mower. I'm out $50. If they ever do start working on it, it will be impossible to trust their diagnosis. read more

Please read the reviews before you use this business. They will attempt to scam you out of your $$$$ for work that is not needed and it will take them forever to get your lawnmower or tractor back. Don seems like a very nice guy but he needs a manager and more help. They promised me my lawn mower back in three weeks (which is still a long time to be without a lawn mower.) At three weeks, I started calling--no one answered and no one returned my calls. I had to drive in to be told they hadn't even looked at it yet. At 4 weeks I went to get it back. They still had not looked at it. I took it back and bought myself an electric mower. I asked for my $50 deposit back, since they hadn't done a thing with it. He said he would have to mail the check. It never came. I drove back out a few weeks later. I was told he'd look into if a check had ever been sent. I asked for a call confirming. I never got a call and I haven't gotten a check. So they have $50 of my money for absolutely no work done and I ended up having to buy a new lawn mower so I could quit borrowing my neighbor's. I really hate to give a lousy review to anyone, especially when he seems like a nice guy who's having health problems, but it's still not acceptable to take that much money from someone, give absolutely no service, and not return the money. read more

I stopped by this business for a snowblower spark plug. The gentleman who helped me was courteous and helpful. Even though I only wanted a spark plug, he offerred to install it in the snowblower (I had it with me in my trunk) and I was on my way in less than five minutes. Great customer service! I took my TORO snow blower in suspecting the carburetor needed cleaning as we could not get it started. After 5-6 weeks we were told it was shot and needed new paddles and carburetor for $320. We said no and we picked it up. In the meantime, paid $860 for a new one. I sold it to someone unknown to me. He contacted me after looking at it to let me know the carburetor was fine and didn't even need cleaning and all it needed was a spark plug. This place is a total scam!!!!!!! I am sure they wanted me to just tell them to scrap the snowblower, they would then replace the plug and sell it. This was only a few years old and used less than handful of times. I wish I would have read the reviews before dropping off my tiller...I told them everything it needed, new plug wire/coil assembly then put a new plug in and see if the tines turn faster...He said he'd call with a price in 2-3 weeks. 5 weeks later I get a call and it's going to cost $350 to repair. I can buy a good used one for $150 on craigslist, so I pick it up today and ask for my $50 deposit since they did nothing except wait 5 weeks to tell me what I already knew. No justification for the cost, no specific parts info/how they came about this price, nope...don't go here. I am writing today because I decided to put my MTD single stage snow blower on the curb for free. I was told by Don's Small Engine that the engine was blown and was junk. At the time you guys decided to junk it out so it was drained of fuel and tossed into the junk pile in back of your repair shop. I was upset at the time for this machine had always started first pull and I remember starting it before I brought it over to get a throttle cable and throttle body housing replaced. So today I put gas into it and used my lawn mower key for the one it had you took off. The snow blower started first pull!! That is just poor and I am flabbergasted! ! To it off they charged me a inspection fee of $45. l thought I was just saving a little time by having you order and install a new cab but it ended up as a customer service nightmare. I was told I was wrong and the engine did not run and I foolishly didn't have them put gas in it to prove it. Just an all around bad situation and I have now of course purchased a new snow blower which I ultimately didn't need. Please learn from this and treat us all with respect and be greatfull for there business. I was treated so poorly and like I was a complete idiot. I am pretty mechanical and just didn't have time to do this repair. I won't be going back to Don's they did not care about my business What so ever. read more

Was disappointed when I called as I has used Don's before, and I called at 4:48 and askeed if they could see if they had a starter for my rider and a male said no, we are closing in 10 minutes, so I said you cant go in computer and see, "nope, " I was very taken back, I use to be in customer service and we had to serve customeer until we closed, in their case, 5:00 p.m.. Brought a snow blower, give to me at a really really really good price, to Don's Small Engine in Coon Rapids MN. Before I brought it friends told me it needed carburetor work and fuel line leaks. Probably $150 to get in working order since it sat unused for 2 years. Dropped it at Don's Small Engine on December 21st with a $50 deposit. They said 3 weeks to fix. Well with Christmas and New Years weeks in there I was guessing that would be OK. After several calls to them I finally got an estimate today. After my $50 deposit they were going to charge me another $371.00. "Are you serious?". Told the same friends, who happen to be sitting there, and they said "Are they serious?". Another friend told me he was familiar with Don's and that I should get it out of there. I am out my $50 deposit but now my snow blower is in the hands of of someone who is NOT A THIEF.
