When I asked my wife at the last minute to please pick up a bottle of scotch on her way to meet me at my dad's funeral, I wasn't expecting what happened. She went in and asked where the scotch was, and was just pointed in the general direction and offered no assistance. Then, when she got to the counter and said "I hope I got the right thing, I would hate to show up to a funeral with the wrong bottle" she didn't really expect to be told that "They should have sent someone who knew what they were doing. No offense." She really didn't expect him to repeat it when she was taken aback and said "Excuse me?"
I even tried calling, and got the same person. He explained to me that he said "no offense" so that must make his comment alright and that both my wife and I being bothered by his comment was due to he and us being "different types of people." He also started to try and explain that scotch is complex and requires a working knowledge. Of course he had in no way offered her any actual assistance in selecting a scotch, just criticism for not being an aficionado. And when I called he offered no apology, just an argumentative and surly attitude and insistence that he was in no way wrong for his actions. If this is the Don & Ben's attitude, I will stick with Specs or any of the other many retailers in the area.
Just be sure you don't ask your wife to pick up something from there without an in depth knowledge. And for the record, I even tried writing to the Don & Ben's corporate office yesterday, with no response. Not worth it. read more
