If you're bummed about this restaurant closing like I am, their original location is in San Diego in the North Park neighborhood, I definitely recommend stopping by if you're down in SD. I was very fortunate to be there on the last night of service and although I was bummed that they had run out of lasagna and one of the pizzas we really wanted to have, all the food was pretty great. Even with reservations, there was a little bit of a wait because many of the tables were lingering, but they still did a great job with the service for how busy they were and the ambiance was cozy and inviting. Here's a breakdown of everything I tried: 5/5 - Hot Shrooms: really delicious battered mushrooms that are lightly fried and served with a delicious buffalo sauce. Definitely my favorite appetizer. 4.5/5 - Fancy Garlic Fries: very tasty but also very light, very thin strips and they go quick, haha. 5/5 - Four Horseman Pizza (Sicilian style): OMG this pizza crust was like pull apart bread, I can't believe so many people don't know the pan here is their best crust! Also, the pizza itself is so delicious, the blend of flavors from the red and pesto sauces is amazing! 5/5 - Vulgar Display of Pineapple: a Sicilian style pan pizza with crushed tomato, mozzarella, fresh pineapple, sausage crumble, smoked maitake, zhoug, and green onions. One of the most flavor packed pizzas on the menu, definitely a close runner-up for my favorite after the four horsemen. 3.5/5 - Fungazi: with ricotta, mixed mushrooms, red onion, spinach, and a truffle cream base. This was definitely on the milder side to flavor wise, I think it appeals to people that like white sauce bases and a creamier texture. Personally we wouldn't get this one again, but it does seem like many people enjoy it. 5/5 - Cast Iron Chocolate Chip Cookie: I mean it's a fresh made chocolate chip cookie and a cast iron dish, you really can't go wrong with this. It's sweet and delicious, a classic cookie and ice cream combination. 4.5/5 - Blackberry Cobbler: definitely for those that prefer more of a tarty and a little tangy flavored dessert, or a somewhat healthier dessert option. Heartbreak is a Warm cozy decor matched by down to earth servers that give you their whole attention. I heard this place is closing down in a few weeks so I had to try it. I ordered two pizzas for myself the Heathen for myself and my kid got the pineapple to go and as I waited I took in the atmosphere and sipped a bootchcraft hard kombucha. Well, my spouse had another wonderful early dinner experience with another very good friend we have introduced to this jewel of a vegan restaurant. And we got another fan for this place. He also fell in love with it. Service, as we are meanwhile used to it, so very friendly and accommodating. We had some nice young man helping us, but also some charming young woman whom I just had to compliment on her great haircut. :) She is so beautiful. This time, my spouse tried the deep-dish pizza, which he really liked; our friend had another pizza ( sorry, I can not recall which one it was), and I had made my special pizza with just tomato sauce, oregano, and some basil, since I am a carnivore and am mentally " allergic" to anything vegan. My husband and I have dined here many times, it's one of our local faves. The food is so good here! Truly high quality and creative vegan food that is beautiful, filling, and reasonably priced. I do wish they were open for brunch, as that would be even more amazing. Parking is very limited and along a busy street. My boyfriend and I enjoyed a delightful Sunday date night here. Our server greeted us and gracefully ushered us in, even as she balanced pick up orders, and a number of other needs that pop up for her attention. We also got to know the other server, Cole, because we rode our motorcycle up and he's an avid rider himself, so that was a fun connection! As I write this review, I must be honest: I woke up thinking about my meal and how great my body feels after consuming such clean food. As you can see from my photos, we chose a really great spread, and my body felt light after eating, even as I ate to maximum capacity. What a beautiful experience, feeling this goodness from the inside out! FANCY FRIES: this appetizer batted 1000 right out of the gate. PERFECTLY smashed fingerling potatoes, PERFECTLY golden brown and crispy. These fries make all other fries in the universe envious. The tang of the accompanying sauce hit just the right complimentary note. STROZZAPRETI CON BROCCOLINI (GF): a comforting bowl of pasta and my favorite vegetable. Who could ask for more? CHICKEN FRIED MUSHROOMS DINNER: I have never experienced a more lush mashed potato, and I'm an absolute fiend for Oyster Mushrooms, so this is a massive winner. Sous Chef Josem mentioned the off-menu CALZONE, so we had to try this item; my boyfriend absolutely loved the perfectly seasoned filling. He is a bread guy, and almost inhaled the whole thing by himself! BLACKBERRY COBBLER: my bf and I super appreciated the natural sweetness and flavor of this cobbler. We've actively been on a lowered-sugar diet, mindful of our intake, for health reasons, and this was the best finish to our meal. DRINK: GINGERALE -- a mildly zesty compliment to wash down our food. We were excited to try a vegan italian place that had a nice menu and a beautiful ambiance. However, it fell short on our expectations. We tried the house bread, lasagna, pesto pasta and the cast iron cookie with ice cream. I can honestly say that the food was okay, but it wasn't exceptional. I liked the pesto pasta the best, lasagna was good but I think it needed a little more flavor to lift it up. Bread was fine with olive oil but the cast iron cookie with ice cream was a let down. I decided to surprise my fiancé for his birthday last month at Donna Jean. I'm not vegan, but he is, so I thought it would be a great surprise. Neither of us had ever been here before, but hadn't heard great things. Especially about the San Diego location. We went on a Thursday night around dinner time. It was very easy to make a reservation online. When we got there, we were greeted almost immediately and could almost sit wherever we wanted because it was pretty slow. Which I didn't mind because it was definitely the kind of vibe we needed that night. The interior is super pretty (sorry I didn't get photos!). It's very simplistic. It's very unassuming from the outside. But when you get inside, it feels spacious and kind of like you're in a Gastropub that is fancy. I forget our servers name because of who I am as a person, but he was super nice. Said he had been there for a while and spoke very highly of the Brand. He gave us the whole backstory about Donna Jean and all the decor inside. It felt like we were part of the chef's world. I always appreciate that kind of touch at a restaurant. Now the food itself was absolutely incredible. And that's coming from a non-vegan. It took everything in me not to order a pizza because they looked incredible but I just had pizza so I went with something a little different. We started with the hot shrooms to share which were probably my favorite thing. The hot sauce they put on them was so yummy. I do wish we got more for how much they were, but they were still worth it. I don't have a photo of it, but my fiancé got the lasagna I think and he loved it. I got kind of something of my own concoction. I got a gluten-free Alfredo pasta, but made it kind of like the cast-iron mac & cheese and then I ended up putting that hot sauce from the shrooms on it which was incredible. I couldn't even finish it and when I heated it up at home later, it was still amazing. For dessert, I think he got the cheesecake which I don't see the menu anymore. It might've been a special they had at the time. But it was so nice because it was his birthday, It was on the house. And he got a candle as you can see! Overall, a great experience. Not someplace I'd go all the time. But they also have a decent beer and wine selection. So I would definitely go back to grab a drink or have a nice, simple meal. This has been our favorite meal in LA so far. The vegan food was perfection. It was comforting and the flavors were complex. We are considering eating all of our meals either here or at other places that they recommend. I hope that they bring one to portland someday. The service was also perfectly done. This is what I love about DineLA it introduces you to incredible places! The dinner her was such a great deal for $35. You get an app, main course and dessert! The waiter did note that the app and dessert was a bit smaller than off regular menus but all this food we got was more than enough and had leftovers! This is long overdue as I was there when they opened (REALLY want to go again). Delicious food made with so much love and care from scratch. Everything I tried was so flavorful and beautifully presented. We had a cheese platter, the fried mushrooms, a mushroom based pizza, and also another dish... we loved everything and even our friend who isn't vegan was impressed. The pizza is delicious and superb! The crust was light with a great texture. The breading on the crust had a nice balance of crisp and browning. I love that they offer their own house made plant based cheese. The cast iron mac and cheese was delicious and satisfying. Olive and citrus semolina cake is delicious refreshing. How did I not know this plant-based restaurant was here? This restaurant is located in Sherman Oaks across from the Fashion Center on Woodman. Blink and you'll miss it since the signage is minimal. Look for the white circular archway. I believe the building used to house a Chinese restaurant before becoming DJ. At the time of my visit (a Saturday evening), street parking and the unassociated mall lot across the street (park at your own risk) were the only options available. There was no dedicated parking lot and no valet. I parked on Riverside Drive which right around the corner. The restaurant was dimly lit, modern and minimalistic in decor. The vibe was relaxed and social. The tables were slightly close to one another but since the restaurant was not at capacity, for the majority of our visit, it wasn't really an issue. The menu had a wide variety of plant-based Italian options so much so that it took me a while to decide. We opted for a salad, the lasagna, and a pizza with add-ons. Our food arrived promptly, was in generous portion, was beautifully plated and absolutely delicious! Here is what I was told about the lasagna: "The Lasagna could easily have passed for its more traditional non-plant based forebear. The correct noodles, layering and phenomenal marinara sauce were all present and accounted for. The sauce had the proper balance of tomato flavor imbued with just the right amount of herbal notes without a hint of excess acidity. Moreover, the plant based cheese had the flavor, texture and Umami one normally associates with its dairy based cousins leading to an extremely well balanced and flavorful lasagna experience. So refreshing to be able to enjoy this Italian staple in a guilt-free, plant based format!" I thoroughly enjoyed the texture and spices of the toppings and the crust which was lite, slightly chewy with just the right amount of crunch. Service was very good. The problem was that the food took well over an hour to come out. Even the salads. They were busy but I noticed that alot of the customers were sitting there for a very long time. The cook came out to smooch his girlfriend at the bar periodically, not very professional. I hate to sound like a prude but when we are waiting so long for our food, it just seemed inappropriate.
