Four of us visited on a Thursday at noon and sat at a four-top near the counter. We were warmly greeted upon entering and placed our order. Shortly after, magic was delivered to our table: * Onion rings - deep fried but not greasy...how is that even possible? * Seasoned fries - Old-bay style. The cheese sauce for dipping was the perfect addition * Sliced pickles - these made for a nice salty crunch! * Cheesesteaks - American cheese and fried onions...perfection. I especially loved the round poppyseed kaiser roll. The steak, cheese, and onions blended into an I-shouldn't-but-I-am-going-to-eat-this-entire-friggen-sandwich situation. Which I did. And I wasn't even uncomfortably stuffed afterward. It was meant to be. This place is super casual. We were on a lunch break (wearing business suits) but no one looked at us crooked. Have not had Donkey's in years, but found myself with a taste for it this week. Ordered a takeout cheesesteak for lunch, and was a bit surprised. Usually the meat to bun ratio is on point, but this time the meat was a bit skimpy. I'm not sure if this is the new normal, as everything seems to be getting smaller and more expensive at the same time, or if this was a one off. An absolute institution. This is the kind of place worth making a trip/ detour for. It was popular for Anthony Bourdain coming here, it was a neighborhood staple long before. The cheesesteak here is solid and paired with a drink if you can. Definitely get it with extra onions and dress it up with the sauces they have there. This was a counter and bar location that served a cheesesteak, fries and dry rubbed wings, nothing else. There were a few tables in the back, but the bar was tight in the front. There were a lot of people taking out too. I enjoyed the slide show that was playing that showed people from around the world displaying their gear from the establishment. The diverse music was loud, which was a little surprising. I had the regular cheesesteak ($15) and an order of fries. The cheesesteak came with white American cheese and fried onions on a poppy seed kaiser. This was huge. The sandwich was packed with thin slices of steak. The steak was a little under seasoned, but it helped when cherry peppers were added. It made all the difference. The poppy seed kaiser roll was soft and held up everything inside. Donkey's Place is a staple in the city of Camden, NJ. Everyone has heard of this place except me. So you know I had to put an end to that. It gives saloon, cowboy vibes when you first walk in. T-shirts hanging on walls, vintage bottles of Scotch for sale, old school photos on the wall, and a very cool light fixture about the counter. The employees were friendly and seemed to be familiar with their customers. The food is prepared once ordered, so sandwiches hot and ready. I ordered the chicken cheesesteak with the works (mayo, mustard, ketchup, onions). I like pickles and sweet peppers cooked on my cheesesteak, but the hot peppers were on the table and they sold whole pickles and not slices. The poppy seed, kaiser bun was extremely fresh, soft and absorbed the cheese and other condiments very nicely. The chicken was tender and seasoned. It was a little salty, but not over powering. This sandwich was vey good, and make sure you have the napkins close by. You will definitely need them. I didn't mention the French fries because they were not the stars of the show, but they were good. If you are ever in Philly or close to south jersey, drive over to Donkey's Palace and get a cheesesteak. FYI, they are open during the week; however, they are only opened on Saturday once a month. It's been 8 years since my last visit to Donkeys Place ONLY because I rarely come to Philly. A few weeks ago I returned and was salivating at the thought of dining here. My visit was for lunch. There is a very small parking lot next to this restaurant/bar with maybe 3-4 spots. Other than that it's street parking only. Inside there is the bar area and a small dining room in the back. You want to sit in the bar area and at the bar is the best. The "kitchen" consists of a large griddle behind the bar where the magic happens. This eatery/bar is counter service and I ordered a cheesesteak with a small order of fries and fountain drink that with tax came to about $22. I sat at the bar near the griddle and watched them cooked the food. Meat, onions and seasoning on a steamed poppy seed bun. Perfection. My meal was ready in less than 10 minutes. The fries here are very good, kind of the shoestring type and with seasoning. No ketchup really needed. The cheesesteak made me so happy. Simple delicious and my all time favorite. Anthony Bourdain was correct when he said the best Philly cheesesteak is in New Jersey and he was talking about here. Donkey's Place is cheesesteak heaven. First of all, the atmosphere is great ... 5 stars for that. Classic old school Jersey dive bar that has stood the test of time. The sandwich was a big let-down for me. It would be at the bottom of my cheese steak list. Bland, didn't taste like there was any seasoning at all ... and really looked like a bunch of frozen 'Steak Um's you'd microwave after a night of drinking in college. It makes me sad to write this because they've been on my bucket list of sandwiches for the last decade, or so. Let's start off by talking about Camden, NJ. It was about a 15 minute drive from Philly, across the bridge ... including a $6 toll. Be aware of this if coming from Philly. I had heard bad things about Camden, including it having been named as the 'Murder Capital of the United States' one year. Yikes. You actually don't drive that far into Camden to get to Donkey's Place so it's not like you are right in the middle of it all. Although there is only a small lot with 5-7 spaces next to the restaurant, which seem to be taken by folks who are not eating in the restaurant. I parked on the street about 1 block away from Donkey's Place. In that block walk, I witnessed a fight between two people who were obviously on some sort of substance. Very sad. Most of the houses around it are boarded up and abandoned. I didn't feel unsafe at 1 p.m. ... however, no way would I walk a few blocks to this place alone at night. The inside is just what you'd expect a dive bar to look like. Lots of bottles stacked up behind the bar ... things stapled up everywhere ... lots of funny signs, notes and boxing memorabilia and pictures on the wall, including lots of celebrities. it feels shop worn and old fashioned but not unclean. If you've ever been to Rutt's Hut in NJ, it has the same vibe with a little more light. When I was there, another tourist couple sat at the bar and a few older couples in the back room. The rest were locals who all seemed to know each other and were generally pretty jovial and non-intimidating. The bartenders were friendly and joked around a lot with everyone further making the atmosphere friendly, despite the location. There was one woman who came in and freaked out about her take out order not being right and another woman who was clearly on something sitting at the bar having a drink. But they added to the charm. The sandwich is bigger than I thought it would be. It reminded me a bit of a much more well done version of a Beef on Weck sandwich from the mid-west. I had it with onions and cheese ... if I had it to do over again, I'd have got double cheese because there was just no taste to the sandwich. No seasoning. Very bland and just blah. What a huge let down as my trip here was 10 years in the making. I would much prefer an actual Philly Steak at Sonny's or Cheavers in the city to this version. The meat here seemed to be 'sheets' the way Steak-Ums from the grocery store are. Some of the sandwich was made up of sheets of beef folded together and layered with a wet bunch of griddled onions. If they were browned and a little more well done, they may have added more to the sandwich. The poppy seed roll was the best part of the sandwich ... but when I was halfway through, the bread on the bottom was saturated with grease and I had to scoop the second half of the sandwich into my mouth with my fingers, which probably looked pretty terrible to anyone eating around me. The bottom of the bun was soggy and basically mush. I did not have any sides and after a few bites I loaded up on the hot pepper relish, which did add to the sandwich's flavor. It didn't seem to have any beef or cheese taste ... so strange because it was certainly what I'd call over-stuffed and filling. Don't spare the pepper relish, which seemed homemade. At the end of the day, I tried it once and won't need to return. The same could be said of the famous Rutt's Hut, which I found equally as over-hyped. At the end of the day, this is a small business which is very well established, so who am I to knock it. People seem to like it and it's an iconic Philly/South Jersey staple ... it just wasn't my thing. read more

While I waited, I grabbed a cocktail and the cocktail was also not special. The customer service was great! The onion rings were the star. And of course the late great Bourdain ate a cheesesteak at Donkey's Place. And while I thought the cheesesteak was good, I just would more like to refer to the sandwich here as a "steak sandwich". Usually cheesesteaks in Philadelphia are on an Italian hoagie roll, with the cheese, onions and meat integrated together. But at Donkey's, it's a round Kaiser roll with the layer of steak, then the thick layer of grilled onions, and then the cheese melted on top. It's a sandwich. They even have hot chiles to spice up the steak sando. Nothing wrong with it but it's not to be compared to Philly, it's unique. The owner Robert is a very down to earth, great guy. Finally got in to check out Donkey's in Camden. The long and insanely over debated debate of "is this really a cheesesteak?" will finally be laid to rest, at least in my personal opinion, as of this day. I will also be hitting another one of Tony Bourdain's favorite spots and I truly appreciated that man and what he stood for so that excites me. Staff was super friendly, they serve beer, and there are a ton of funny t shirts everywhere donning the Donkey's brand. My kind of spot. I was also lucky enough to grab one of the like 4 parking spots in their lot and didn't have to deal with street parking. Got a cheesesteak wit' and some fries and a Miller High Life to wash that all down. The sandwich was...whatever it is. Is this a cheesesteak? I don't know, and more importantly, I don't care. I can tell you that it was tasty and that I'd go back and get another one sometime. I can tell you that it's even better once you start playing around with the hot pepper relish and the hot oil at the table. I can also tell you that in my personal opinion, it would benefit greatly from another slice or two of American right in the middle of all the meat. Donkey's used to be my favorite cheesesteak place for quite some time, but I went yesterday (10/17/24) and something had change. The meat that was previously used was no longer the same. Everything else was the same, but their meat quality has changed which was disappointing. I would usually finish my entire sandwich even if I was full because it was so good, but yesterday I barely got through half of it. They piled on more meat than usual I guess to make up for the lack of quality and flavor. The seasoned fries were also a little bit too seasoned and I couldn't finish them as they got too salty. The lime lager beer that was on tap was top tier and was served in a nice frosty mug. Not sure if it's a new cook, plus the new meat supply, but I hope they go back to their original recipe that has made them renowned to all cheesesteak aficionados. read more

In a rare instance of bravery, I waltzed into Camden to discover a quick-service, vintage dive bar, and non-traditional (but delicious) cheesesteaks. Liked it so much I bought a t-shirt. The meat portion is very generous, and you can get it without the onions, but I recommend you try them, they're different in a good way. Only American cheese as an option, but they did indicate they'd do whiz if we wanted. Love the simplicity. I think I have come to realize I don't care for cheesesteak sandwiches. They're always just a soggy mess. The roll didn't hold up to the mess so I needed to eat it with a fork and knife. Not sure how I feel about the "twisted cheesesteak" on a poppy seed roll. Perhaps this is what makes it different from any other cheesesteak. For starters the meat itself had a good amount of flavor on it. The portion size was adequate. I didn't taste anything "special" with the onions based on some of the reviews. All in all the sandwich was good. I only wish I wasn't sitting under the fan. My fries were cold less than 5 mins after they brought them out. I still ate them but just would have liked them hot. My waiter/greeter I think is Mike or Mark. He was cool. I was greeted as soon as I came inside. He did make me feel welcome. I told him this was my first time being here and he said he would take care of me and he did. I liked the fact that he made me feel appreciated and that is always a good thing at a restaurant. There was not a line and I was able to sit almost as soon as I arrived. The parking lot was full, but only about 4-5 cars could fit so I did street parking. The parking lot was clean, no trash or messes outside. Trash can was empty; it looks like they take pride of their establishment. I did not use the bathroom but it was probably clean. They provided hand sanitizer on each of the tables so that shows they care about their customers. I've heard legends for years about Donkey's Place in Camden. Supposedly their cheesesteaks surpass all others in Philadelphia. Unfortunately the hours it's open create issues for me as I work in Philly proper 9 to 5 every day. But on the first Saturday of the month, I finally got my chance. The cheesesteak at donkey's not only met my expectations, but surpassed them. It's a local bar just oozing history and character. I almost regret not staying here longer for the Phillies game but I had plans that night. The place is packed so we wait for a table, but get a good look at the space, the grill, the food, the crowd. I like it. After we sit down we get to ordering some steaks.i get mine with grilled onions because that is essential and extra cheese because I love cheese. This was an excellent decision. The steaks came out hot and ever so juicy. And honestly, this might be the peak combination of ingredients in a cheesesteak I've ever seen. Everything came together. Perfectly. Let me explain. The meat in the sandwich is pulled high. But the meat is cooked right next to a giant pile of caramelizing onions. This allows the steak to soak in the juicy rich flavor. Combined with a cheese that I cannot immediately identify but am sure is not wizz, it creates a whole new experience. It's like eating a steak and french onion soap, in a sandwich! Absolutely awesome. And the kaiser role with poppy seeds was no slouch either. This was a damn fine steak, and probably the best I've ever had. We also got wings and onion rings. The latter was always the plan when we saw them come out of the fryer, and as for the wings, I'm not usually a dry rub wing guy but we figured how often are we there. To quote my buddy will, the onion rings were fresh, delicious, and basically like candy. It's the caramelization again, the onions on the inside have all the sweetness in them unlocked to create something special. A little sweet but that's what makes it so good. Finally as for the wings; they were good, but I'm just not a dry rub wing guy. I need mine just dripping in sauce and hot. Donkey's is now my choice for best cheesesteak I've ever had. Ok this is easily the best cheesesteak sandwich I've ever had. Anthony Bourdain was right that this is incredible. Their sandwich is a twist on an original recipe, switching the iconic bread roll for super soft, poppyseed bun. They load this sandwich up with warm, juicy, tender steak as well as delicious cheese and a pile of sautéed onions. They also serve it with a side of a spicy relish that adds a great contrast between heavy bites and an acidic afterthought. The French fries are also great - while they're not as crispy as other cheesesteak joints in the city, their secret seasoning on the fries is awesome. It's close to a Cajun seasoning. Overall, it's very easy to see how this is one of, if not the best cheesesteak spot in the city. I highly recommend coming out here. Very small and a very tiny grill so do you expect to wait as take out orders go first. it is $15 for a sandwich. It was a very good steak sandwich. Definitely needs more than two slices of cheese. The onions were great, but this is not a cheesesteak. It is a steak sandwich with cheese and onions. I'm glad I got to check it off my bucket list, but I don't think I would return. fries are OK unfortunately they dump too much seasoning into one area and we got stuck with some fries that had too much seasoning and some that had none. read more

With due respect to the late, great Mr. Bourdain, this isn't the best cheesesteak I've ever had. That said, it's good. Real good. It's also definitely a unique presentation in changing out the sub roll for a poppy seeded kaiser roll. The prominently displayed "F&@! Long Rolls" t-shirt hanging on the wall by the front door clearly states Donkey's point of view, and while I'm not that far into the round roll camp, I did really like this version. The meat is not spread out and scattered on the sandwich, rather it is rolled and absolutely smothered in fried onions, which is a good thing. Came here after hearing all of the hype plus Anthony bourdain saying that this the best cheesesteak in Philly area. Have no clue if things have changed since then or what but was really disappointed. The meat was bland and there was hardly and cheese at all. It tasted more like a roast beef sandwich than any type of cheesesteak. Not terrible but not going out of the way for. However, walking in you're greeted by so many friendly faces cracking jokes and just trying to get another one of those delicious cheesesteaks. When you first walk in, you first see the bar and a couple of tables to eat. Down the bar that's where you place your order or you can go ahead and take a seat in the back and a waitress will come and take your order.
