Carlos completed a challenging task of making a completely custom media cabinet for me. It came out exactly as I expected and I'm extremely happy with the result. I have always wanted a "media cabinet" to hold my movies, SF Giants bobbleheads, collectible statues, and my artwork. Obviously, there is nothing like this in retail stores, so I need an expert carpenter like Carlos to make it for me. Not only was it to hold my "man cave treasures", but it also had to extend from the wall about 5 or 6 inches to allow our barn door to slide behind it. This is an appeal to all homeowners: Please take caution and learn from our experience with Donka Custom Cabinets & Millwork/Carlos Baez. We chose Carlos due to a referral and subsequent perceived value. His website reassured us that we would end up with a lovely kitchen and one that we would be proud to show off to family and friends. Our kitchen cabinet installation occurred in December of 2017. The first problem we encountered with Carlos was with the reclaimed wood island that he installed. The underside of the island was rough and not finished properly. I got splinters on my hand when rubbing the underside of the island. Carlos had to return to remove the island top so that it could be sanded down Then the major issue started appearing. We noticed paint chipping from the kitchen cabinets 2 months after installation. I contacted Carlos in April 2018 (4 months after installation), advising him that the paint had begun to come off. Immediately, Carlos and his painter said it was water damage and blamed us. We all agreed to wait a couple of months to see if further damage happened. In July 2018 we called Carlos again regarding the continued chipping of the paint on our cabinets. He returned in August 2018 and again said it was "use" and water damage and that the 6 month warranty had expired. It appears that the cabinets are also cracking. He said he only gets a 2 month warranty on the fronts (he subcontracts) and he had kindly extended it to 6 months, but this was not disclosed in April. We reluctantly agreed to let Carlos spot treat the defective areas. When he eventually came by to fix them he took a couple cabinet fronts with him had his (new) painter touched up the paint on the rest on-site at our house. Within a few weeks the cabinets started peeling again. We contacted Carlos again in September 2018 and he was once again adamant that it's our fault. We could understand this conclusion if the paint chipping was concentrated around the sink, but it is everywhere throughout the kitchen and on the inside and outside of the cabinets. We paid Carlos $18,337 and the kitchen cabinets still need to be refinished. Carlos has offered pay for half of the refinishing costs of the cabinets. This is unacceptable. Why should we have to pay an additional $???? To have our cabinets completed? Carlos has left us without the beautiful kitchen cabinets that we were promised and now we are left with hiring someone else to repair the shoddy paint job on the cabinets that he installed. We had a great experience with Carlos (and we found him on Yelp). We did a custom pantry conversion. His price was competitive and he is responsive to email and txt. His recommendations were also spot-on. We were debating between laminate and paint for the cabinets (which we wanted to have glossy white, European finish) - he recommended paint and we went with it but we were still unsure how it will be - it looks great and well finished. This review is long overdue, so I won't skimp on the details. Almost a year ago we contacted Carlos, along with a few other contractors, for a bathroom vanity we needed built for our Master Bath remodel. The bathroom is small, only 5' x 8', and it needed to fit a full-size tub with shower, the toilet, and the vanity opposite the bathroom door. We needed a custom cabinet because the vanity could not be more than 36" wide, with two doors (could not hit the bathroom door when opened) and three good, functional drawers, as well as a pull out shelf under the sink, behind the doors. Most standard 36" vanities only give you two drawers with a centered sink, because the sink gets in the way of a top drawer. Or, there would be three drawers but the sink would have to be offset to the left or right - which we did not want. We wanted a specific stain, and specific construction details, including custom-designed feet for the vanity. I called Carlos' contact number, he answered immediately, and we scheduled an appointment for him to come to the house a few days later. When he arrived he was professional, courteous, and listened to what we wanted. He acknowledged what could be done, and not done, but also emphasized he wanted to "make it work" for us. The resulting design, bid, and his open communication were reasons for us picking Carlos. We are so happy we did. The finished product's style and function are 100% satisfactory. During the process of finalizing the design, the build, the finish work, and the install Carlos was top-notch in being easy to work with. But additionally, he's a nice, hard-working man who we felt owns an inherent integrity about is work. I was referred to Carlos by our designer to redo our whole kitchen, laundry room, mud room, and 3 bathroom vanities. I was debating between high end European cabinets or custom cabinets from Carlos. The prices were close. Now that it's all done, I can't praise Carlos enough for his work. 1) His custom cabinet work is HIGH quality. I went to many cabinet stores prior to Carlos and his work blows the competition away. Everyone who has seen my home compliments his work. 2) There are so many changes when you remodel. The electrical, the appliances, trim, etc...sometimes it's a game of inches or less. And you can't make changes when you order from a store or else you pay big $, waste time to reorder, or just accept the errors. But Carlos was able to accommodate all of the changes. He took ownership of our cabinets to the end. This is extremely valuable to the owner. 3) Carlos has great communication and meets his deadlines. Remodeled 3 bathrooms and worked with Carlos to customize bathroom vanities, makeup, and closets. Carlos is very nice to work with. He not only gave me the lowest quote, but arrived at my house on time, took all of the measurements, showed me samples to choose from. He listened to the style and concepts that I wanted, and gave me ideas of different options to choose. Carlos would follow up during the work to show / confirm with me the designs. It was completed on time. With all three bathrooms being remodeled (coordination with contractors, installers, etc...), Carlos was very flexible with my schedule and installation was done promptly and neatly without impacting other installations. Needless to say the vanities and closets were professionally installed and looked better than I expected. Real 1/2 and 3/4 in. maple wood were used inside and out. Tongue and groove drawers with soft-closing hinges. I chose the frame-less design, and the gaps between the drawers were perfect. Carlos followed up after the remodeling was done to install the knobs/pulls, made sure all of the drawers and doors were still aligned properly, and any touch-ups necessary. Carlos was very professional and is always tidy when he finishes a job. I was happy with Carlos's work that I immediately called him back to build customized wardrobes. It is such a pleasure to still see someone so passionate and takes pride in their work. Before you buy pre-made cabinets or hire a cabinet maker, check to make sure the type of wood is being used, and how it's being built.
