Gosh, who knew that so many stores and restaurants in Zürich would be closed on Sundays? It's worse than Paris! Lucky for us, Dong Que is open daily as we were still able to enjoy a pleasant meal here on a Sunday evening.
This spot's located in a residential neighborhood between the airport and Oerlikon. It's easily served from north and south by bus or from the south via tram. It's a neat and tidy restaurant (bathrooms were incredibly clean) with seating for about 20-25 people.
The menu is good sized and offers several variations of noodle bowls, pho, and stir fries and rice. I was surprised to also find a page of "Vietnamese Specialties" including banh khot, banh cong, and several variations of banh xeo. As for me, I ordered the banh cuon - super thin sheets of rice noodle wrapped around a ground pork filling. Accompanied by a deep fried mung bean and shrimp fritter, topped with green onions, fried shallots, and fish sauce, and served with fresh and pickled veggies, this meal was an absolute winner, quite possibly even better than what I can get back in the U.S.
The menu is in Swiss/German and Vietnamese but we knew enough to figure out what to order. I suppose you could surely ask for help if you needed it. Or use Google Translate!
About half of the patrons were Vietnamese and a good chunk of the neighborhood restaurants along this street were Asian. I had no idea that there was much of an Asian community in Zürich.
The workers are lovely and might also be curious to know how a tourist found their way to a spot in a non-tourist community. I think it's so cool how Yelp takes me to the most interesting, otherwise unknown places like this place.
Anyway, Vietnamese food in Zürich may not be the first thing that comes to mind but this spot is worth a visit, especially when you're sick of cheese, cream, bread and potatoes. read more
