While I played in my 20s while visiting my parents, I never before had official lessons, and it's fair to say that I was still a 'newbie' to the sport. After roughly 20 lessons across the two instructors, endless hours on the golf range and a par 3 course (thanks to some very patient individuals who were willing to put up with my play 1 - 2x/week), I never got better. My ball striking was inconsistent (as in, I couldn't connect all the time) and while my love for the game never waned, I did become increasingly frustrated. Elbow surgery forced me to take some time off and I decided that I needed to basically re-start from scratch. After researching golf instructors in South Florida, I came across Jess. I read the reviews, watched his videos and made the conscious decision to NOT swing a club until I had my first lesson with Jess. Well, that first lesson was today and I was absolutely floored. While other instructors focused on my grip and just watched me hack away hour after hour, Jess gave me actual tools that I can use to better my game. We worked on 3 specific drills that I can now focus on. Basic drills, but this was the first time I actually understood what was inhibiting me from having a consistent ability to connect with the ball. Somehow, these fundamentals were never discussed with me prior, even though I was taking lessons from PGA certified instructors. I do believe everyone learns differently. For me, having a knowledge in the fundamentals (e.g., weight on front leg, shoulder down, wrists straight) for the first time leaves me with the feeling that I can do this. Thanks, Jess! We actually could have used a ranger to push the group ahead as it got a bit slow, but considering it was Fourth of July, the pace of play was more than acceptable. Some places pack the courses and you quickly end up with 5+ hour rounds on holidays. Osprey Point has been here more than a decade now, and they still offer well manicured tracks at very affordable rates. Largely natural areas, it is nice to play a course that is not lined with condos and houses. I believe that is one of the reasons that Osprey Point is consistently ranked in the top 50 public courses in Florida. Now to think you can play here for under $40 during peak times and less than $30 for twilight and it is a steal! This is definitely one of my favorite places to knock it around. For the holiday, they replaced all of the green flags with American flags. I really liked that they had little stands on every green so that you could keep the flag from touching the ground. Nice touch.

Despite having some experience and my father being his own self proclaimed guru (with clubs straight from 1970s and never updated, mind you) Mike is able to break down the fundamentals of the game in a very thorough and concrete way. (And convinced my father to update his clubs! haha) Our lessons consisted of learning all aspects of the game. History, foundation, long range, short game. And all the little details in between from your stance, how to properly how the club, lining your shot. Nothing is missed. At times it may seem like information overload but once you hit that sweet shot you'll have that "Ah-ha!" moment that only Mike could provide. Boca Rio Golf Club is exclusively for members and if they want to book parties etc. This place is very proper and very old Boca glamour. They had arranged a gorgeous room with beautiful flowers everywhere. For cocktail hour the servers were providing top notch service. As soon as I was done eating or drinking they took the plate or drink from me. And of course I went a few times to try all the appetizers. The shrimp cocktail, tuna tataki, smoked salmon, veggie dumplings, etc were all amazing. For the dinner segment, they had set up portable chef stations outside. This gave everyone the opportunity to look outside to the pristine golf course and enjoy the view. They had steak stations, seafood, Asian cuisine etc. I was stuffed from cocktail hour however I tried a few items. The only thing lacking at dinner time was the fact many of the dishes were very low on seasoning and a bit bland. Overall, the food was excellent but I needed a bit more salt/seasoning. My favorite dinner component was the endless arrangement of different kinds of salads. There is nothing like fresh greens. For dessert: I was thrilled they set up bite size portion desserts.
