Monday lunch in May at Don Julio's in Buenos Aires. We arrived early hoping to snag a table but they told us there were none and to return in the afternoon to be placed on the walk-in waiting list. So we came back at 3. While we waited outside with the rest of the crowd they gave us champagne and mini empanadas. So good. At 3:30 we were sat at a nice table in a small room with a few others. The ambience was quiet luxury in a rustic setting. No loud music (or any I think), just soft murmurs of conversation and the tinkling of cutlery kissing dishes. I felt like royalty. Before ordering they brought us endive with a delicious arugula pesto (sauce was amazing!!), yummy bread rolls and butter. For starters we ordered provoleta (grilled provolone) and for the entree ribeye and porterhouse with sides of salad greens and baby Brussel Sprouts. And a glass of house wine. My steak was the best porterhouse I've ever had. Period. It was huge, so tender, so delicious. Perfectly seasoned and cooked. My mouth is watering as I write this. The ribeye was perfection! No wonder people come from all over the world to drop tons of money on a meal here. It is sooo worth it. The server kindly cut the bone off my steak and set it off to the side which made for an uncrowded eating experience. The simple salad was delicious as were the perfectly grilled baby Brussels sprouts. Even the house wine was good. We were too full for dessert but they brought us complimentary alfajoritos to end our meal. I highly recommend making reservations when you visit. Which is a must!! read more

One of the most well known parrillas in all of Argentina and currently maintains one Michelin star. It's quite busy and very hard to get a reservation. I check a couple weeks out for any night of the week and only was able to find outside tables online. I came here on a Wednesday night around 10:30 in hopes of getting it less busy than a weekend night. I only had to wait about 15 minutes and also got a free glass of champagne and a mini empanda. As I came in they offered me a tour of the wine cellar which was full of unique and old wines. They have a massive wine offering which I think is one of the things that helps them out on the Michelin guide. It's a classic steakhouse offering, probably best approached by sharing a few cuts with a table. But as I was here by myself I went for the tasting menu so I could try more things. They brought over some bread to start with chimichurri, as well as an odd amuse bouche of a single endive leaf with a pretty bland green sauce. The first course started off with a thinly slice of beef kinda like jerky meets prosciutto. Very flavorful and tender, loved it. Second course was a sausage that was incredibly juicy and exploding with flavor, one of the best sausages I've ever had. Then came a sweetbread course which I've never had before. It was very unctuous and rich, bit too heavy for my taste and sort of made me want to stop eating at this point. It came with a very basic salad with simple vinaigrette. The next two courses were a ribeye broken into two components, the eye and the rib cap. The eye came with another equally bland salad. The cap came with a table side preparation of a sweet potato which was honestly quite comical. Fine dining is known for beautiful table side prep, but scooping out the inside of a sweet potato and spooning over melted butter is amusingly basic. With no other seasoning here but salt it was again, very bland. Steak was fantastic and juicy, a bit on the rarer side than I would normally go for but I think this is never given the unique leaner quality of Argentine beef. Chimichurri was classic, oddly I was offered a spicy chimichurri half way through my meal which I preferred, unsure why it wasn't brought sooner. Bread courses were very standard, again nothing spectacular here. The sommelier helped me pick out a couple glasses of wine and was generally very helpful and attentive. The wine I had was solid but nothing crazy, elected for some of the cheaper choices since this was the most expensive meal I had in all of Argentina. Pumpkin ice cream was nice though oddly lacking in sweetness for a country that seems to take many things very sweet. Overall, this is such a classic and well known place that I felt it would be wrong not to check it out, yet I had heard there are better places at cheaper price points and I would now say that is very true. The beef quality here is fantastic and prepared well. Staff is attentive and helpful. But this really just doesn't present a fine dining experience as you might expect for a Michelin star. It feels like it fits more into the bib gourmand category. And at this price point it's really hard to feel like the price is justified. I dined at other places for way less including another Michelin star that was a true fine dining experience for a little over half the price. Much more courses with each element thoroughly thought out. The bland salads and side elements here don't detract away from the meat but they don't bring anything else to the table either. They feel like they exist to be a line item on a menu and nothing more. While I'm glad I got to try this place out, I likely wouldn't come back. We celebrated a birthday at Don Julio Parrilla with reservations booked weeks in advance. We were part of the first seating, and the entire operation ran incredibly smoothly. While waiting the very minimal time for our table, we were treated to free Prosecco and mini empanadas--I actually managed to enjoy almost two glasses before we were seated! Indoor dining seems to be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis based on your reservation time. We were given an outdoor table, which offered a lovely atmosphere, but it does come with a significant caveat. While Palermo is undeniably one of the nicer neighborhoods in Buenos Aires, its popularity with tourists makes it a target for pickpockets and scammers. If you are dining outside, you need to remain vigilant. During our meal, we witnessed a specific scam happen twice: individuals selling socks would approach outdoor tables and casually lay a few pairs down right over people's belongings. When they picked their merchandise back up, they would subtly swipe whatever was underneath. Be extremely careful and absolutely do not leave your phone or wallet resting on the table. One table managed to get their phone back only after chasing the thief down for several blocks, while an older group nearby wasn't as lucky. To the restaurant's credit, the staff actively pushes these individuals away when they spot them bothering customers, and there was a police officer stationed near the entrance for the entirety of our meal. I never felt unsafe dining there or walking around the area, but falling victim to a scam can easily ruin an evening. If you want a more relaxed experience where you don't have to keep your guard up as much, I highly recommend aiming for an indoor table. Moving on to the meal itself, It absolutely lives up to the hype. We shared the ribeye, and it was fantastic. I might not go so far as to call it the absolute best steak in the world, having had my fair share of great cuts across NYC, LA, Japan, Korea, and Australia, but the quality was undeniable and it was cooked perfectly. The accompanying sauces were excellent, and I absolutely loved the grilled cheese and the house-grown grilled peppers. If you are seated outside, take a moment to step inside, perhaps to use the restroom, just to see the open kitchen and the magnificent wine cellar downstairs. It is incredible to witness the sheer care they put into cooking the meats. What truly sets Don Julio apart, however, is the staff. They are extremely friendly and welcoming, and the service is easily among the best of any restaurant I have visited in the world. To celebrate the birthday, they generously comped one of our appetizers and provided a beautiful dessert. It was an incredibly kind gesture they didn't have to do, and we deeply appreciated the caring hospitality. Did Don Julio's live up to the hype? Can any restaurant ranked #10 in the world by World's Best Restaurants -- and crowned #1 steakhouse three consecutive years -- truly live up to its reputation? I'd say yes, and then some. A word of advice: sit inside. That's where the magic happens. The open-flame grills roaring indoors create an incredible ambiance -- intimate, lively, and unlike anything else. We thought we could get a dinner reservation with maybe a week's advance but found out they are 3 months out when we tried in February. We were able to get a first seating Lunch reservation 3 weeks in advance. Arrived on a Saturday for an 11 am reservation and already was starting to pick up. We were met with a complimentary glass of Chandon Brut (with refills) which was a nice touch. Also, there was a pumpkin mini empanada that was being passed out as we waited to be seated. Didn't taste it but heard comments from others that were enjoying it. We were seated outside promptly at 11. Inviting outdoor Dining with tablecloths. A plethora of different cuts of steak! We ended up going with the Ribeye (Ojo de Bife)and noticed that many were sharing their steak. When we saw 500 grams (or over a pound) for the Ribeye and many of the cuts, we understood why. Steak came out a perfect medium rare (as recommended)-tender with that char/smoke flavor-delicious! Our side salad was enjoyed. House baked bread with tasty dips as well a complimentary tomato with sauce (off menu-cant remember name) appetizer were a great start to our meal. This one? A big disappointment. And yeah, I might catch some heat for saying it. It's trendy, all over social media, crowned by many as the best parrilla in Buenos Aires supposedly even a Michelin star winner. So naturally, the bar was set high. Maybe too high. I'm not saying the food was terrible. It wasn't. It just didn't shine. Nothing on the plate made me pause, nothing made me lean back and say, "Okay, now I get it." Maybe I ordered the wrong thing. Maybe it was an off night. But when you walk into a place with that kind of reputation, you expect more than just "fine." I came without a reservation, fully aware I'd have to wait. No problem there. What did bother me, though, was watching others in line being handed bubbles, empanadas, little bites to hold them over while in the full hour I stood there, not once was I offered anything. On a 1-month getaway, other than lodging and air, I'd planned very little. Don Julio was the sole spot I'd planned to dine at, making 3pm reservations for an outdoor table well in advance of my trip. I'd read about Don Julio and noted its Michelin star but had no expectations other than a great meat meal at an authentic Argentinian parilla (steakhouse). And, despite the late hour at which Argentinians generally dine, I'd opted for a late afternoon seating in anticipation of how full I'd be when leaving. With outdoor temperatures approaching 90 degrees I was relieved to be greeted with a glass of champagne and follow the hostess to a table for 4, inside the restaurant. From there? Everything was just as perfect as that introduction. On a walking tour days earlier my guide had pointed out Don Julio noting their popularity and prices. My group and another person on the tour had upcoming reservations there and he assured us it was good and we'd enjoy it but made the point that the same experience can be had all over Buenos Aires at a lesser cost. Having now had the Don Julio experience and experienced several other parilla I concur with only part of his comment: One can have a similar experience and meal elsewhere but one cannot have the Don Julio experience. It's worth having. The staff at Don Julio is unlike the staff at any other Argentinian restaurant. Their level of attentiveness is outstanding. Without getting into the nitty gritty of the excellent meal and service I will say that they feature a very big menu and an even bigger wine list. My table of 4 sampled Rib-eye, Tenderloin, and Prime Rib with various tomato accompaniments, bread, wine, and... ah, who knows? The whole experience was dreamy and one of my fondest membranes of my vacation. Expensive for Argentina, sure, but with tip and wine my meal for 4 ran just under $400; Almost reason enough to fly to Buenos Aires. Don Julio was an experience I'd regret having missed. read more

I made a reservation for Don Julio 2 months in advance online. I chose lunch since I was thinking there would be less of a wait. We were running late by 15 minutes but it was fine. We were given a complimentary empanada and champagne before heading to our table outside. I don't eat much meat but when in Rome (sorry, Argentina), best to eat meat. I shared the strip steak and the grilled summer vegetables side (tomatoes, eggplant, summer squash). The portion sizes were large so definitely shareable. I liked the vegetables more than the steak (go figure) since there was a stronger smoky taste from the grill. The steak was good too, tender and perfectly cooked at medium rare. After eating 4 Asados in country before we ate here we had tried a variety of styles of cooking. We loved the Proveleta and skirt steak (seasoning and cook were perfect). One of the most famous steakhouses in the world with great service. My booking is at 10:30pm and when I arrived a bit early, I was immediately greeted with an empanada and a glass of sparkling wine while I wait. They showed me the wine cellar on the way in which is quite an impressive collection. Steak portions are generally huge in Argentina so I got the half portion rib eye. Extremely well prepared with nice condiments - compared to New York steakhouses it has a more charcoal grilled flavor. One thing to pick on is while the steak knife looks pretty it is a bit difficult to use. Overall the experience is great and it is not too expensive for a fine dining experience at one of the best restaurants in the world. I was a bit wary when coming in because I saw mixed reviews on Reddit and this spot only boasts a 4.4 on Google Maps. However, as a one Michelin star steakhouse and rated number one in the world, I had to give it a go while in Buenos Aires. I arrived a bit late to my reservation as there was a bit of traffic on the way. However, they were kind enough to seat me still and handed me a glass of complimentary champagne while waiting for the table to clear. Before seating, they gave me a tour of the meat grill and the downstairs wine cellar as well. My seat was outside (where the majority of the seats were), but I didn't mind it as it was quite nice outside. As for the actual food, I asked for a "bife de chorizo ancho, jugoso tirando a punto" - an Argentine sirloin, wide side, rare leaning towards medium. ChatGPT said this would be the juiciest cut, and I was really impressed by the steak. It was very sizable, and most bites were extremely flavorful. My only pet peeve is that there were some bites that were a bit chewier and tougher, but in hindsight it's really hard to get such a large steak cooked fully perfectly. We were seated on the patio and the service was fantastic from the start. Our table wobbled a bit and our server fixed it immediately like it was nothing. We ordered the heirloom tomato special, which was delicious, and shared a steak. The steak was perfectly cooked and surprisingly large, even after they cut it in half for us. I felt a little guilty when I noticed the petite woman next to us happily finishing her own steak. Treating everyone like a VIP, greeting them with a glass of Chandon and a warm empanada sets the tone. You step in and literally every member of the service crew welcomes you until you are at your table. The service is meticilous, to the point they iron the tablecloths on the table and put a cloth on your purse to protect it from spills. Everyone will tell you that the food and the parilla experience is not irreplacable, and it is true. We did get similar chorizo de bonbon and bife de chorizo at other establishments as well. This is how I know the spirits above stay having our backs. We rolled up to BA with zero plans. The only thing I managed to do before we left LA was find a dinner spot on our last night. Aside from that reservation, we had nothing else in our agenda. On our first full day, we started with a coffee related activity. That event ended with us super hungry. We walked around and saw a group of people waiting out front. After checking in, I was told the wait was 90 mins. If we were back home, I woulda left, but this place had awards on top of awards for their steak. So I put my name down and we proceeded to kill time by walking around the neighborhood then grabbing a cocktail at a random bar. Let me tell you something. The wait was worth it. The food was wow. They started us off with some empanadas and a slice of their focaccia. We got the t bone cos we decided why not We also got a salad and the mixed veggies The meat was perfectly cooked. We went in so hard and ate it all. We did however take home the bone to reward a local dog at the Airbnb where we were staying. I don't even remember what kind of wine we each got cos I ended up downing mine like it was juice. Impeccable service. I was really exciting to be going to Buenos Aires and to eat at a great steakhouse like Don Julio and I was not disappointed, it was an outstanding meal. Like many great restaurants, you need to get your reservation well in advance. We were able to get outside seating (which is more prevalent) and were lucky that the weather was good. Service was excellent everywhere. When you arrive for lunch, there is a line of people also there with reservations at the same time. They do greet you with a nice glass of white wine and the line moves quickly once it hit our 11:30am reservation time. Before you order, you get more treats. There was a tasty beef empanada and then some incredible bread with choice of salsa or this bean dip. There are a couple choices to eat. They have some set menus or you can order ala carte, which we chose. We ordered the ribeye, the house salad and mushrooms. Then they also have an unbelievable wine list. I was not that familiar with Argentinian wines, but found an incredible Malbec. The steak was incredible. The flavor was excellent and it was seasoned perfectly. Be advised that one steak can perfectly feed two people, they are big and thick. The mushrooms were not what we were thinking--they are large and almost more like little pieces of meat. Overall my experience was great but not mind-blowing to say the least. Reservations can be hard to get through their website, but we reached out via WhatsApp and took a lunch time reservation. Dining time also extends past midnight but don't be alarmed, there were still diners that were just starting to order, when we walked past the restaurant one night. For our 11:30am slot, they were just opening so you'll still have to stand in line to be seated. You get complimentary wine or a bottle of water to those who don't drink. I would recommend asking for a bottle of water if you can - when you are ordering with your server it will be 10000 ARS (for Canadians, around $14). Many complimentary items including an heirloom tomato with olive oil and salt, empanadas, unlimited bread and a dessert. We ordered a T-bone steak, salad and mash potatoes. Some diners were offered a visit to their wine cellar. We received a tip from our friends to ask about visiting the wine cellar so when we asked they seemed a bit hesitant to bring us down. It was a cool experience to see how big this cellar was, holding over 14000 bottles. There was a bottle that was as old as 1929 (which is not sold to customers). Don Julio is commonly referred to as one of the best steakhouses in the world, even earning a Michelin star. This made my recent visit to the restaurant as my most anticipated of my recent trip to Argentina. We started the meal with a few appetizers: Grilled Provolone Cheese, Garlic Zucchinis, and Grilled King Trumpet Mushrooms. The Provolone was gooey, smokey, and seasoned with flavorful rosemary. The Zucchini was juicy and crisp and the Mushrooms were tender, smokey, and meaty. For our entrée we split an Entrecot Steak. The steak was thick, juicy, and smokey with a nice amount of creamy fattiness. Finally, for dessert we had the ice cream, which was ironically my favorite part of the meal. The dessert was super creamy with rich vanilla and dulce de leche flavors. Fantastic!! Warning: people in Buenos Aires will tell you that for a steak it is overrated. This review is to tell you to what extended I agree and disagree with this claim. "For the steak" - yes, although I believe the quality of the steak is perfect, very high and delicious...in itself it is definitely not worth the price. If you "only" care about the steak ..you can go somewhere else. BUT I believe my experience was worth the price for everything surrounding the steak. You are welcome and treated very exclusively from the first moment when you stand in line, and they keep pouring you sparkling wine unless you say no, as you wait to be seated. Before sitting at my table, I was asked if I wanted to visit their wine collection, and I of course said yes, and I was explained how the wine is stored, where it comes from and so on. Besides what you order, you'll be served complimentary appetizers that are very well curated, delicate and flavorful. Very balanced and inspiring indeed. The whole service is great, welcoming, kind, flexible to your requests, attentive to your taste and your needs, patient explaining and answering all the many questions you might have, and ready to give suggestions if you ask for it. The ambience is also very elegant and comfortable at the same time. My biggest highlight was the choice of red wine. After explaining that I love oaky, smoky, full-body red wine...I was recommended one and...OMG it was so good and so heavenly nuanced that I just kept picking up the glass and smelling it, without actually drinking it so that I wouldn't finish it, and the experience could last longer. If you are looking for a true Michelin-star experience, Don Julio is not the place. If you simply want to say you've eaten here, then go ahead--but don't expect fine dining on the level Michelin is supposed to represent. Yes, the food is very good. But the entire experience fell well short of Michelin caliber. The evening felt rushed from start to finish. Service was adequate, but nowhere near the refined, polished standard expected at a Michelin-starred restaurant. The final disappointment was when the manager began resetting our table--adding chairs--while my partner was still eating. When I raised the issue, I was met with nothing more than a smirk. That summed up the night: careless, dismissive, and far from Michelin-worthy. Shame on Michelin for awarding a star here. At best, this should be a "Michelin Guide recommended" spot, not a starred destination. Don Julio is fine if you want to check it off your list, but there are plenty of excellent steakhouses in Buenos Aires without the inflated Michelin label. Don Julio delivers a high-quality dining experience with truly excellent service. The staff was warm and attentive, and the welcome touches -- sparkling wine and beef empanadas while waiting in line -- were a classy start. That said, I found it a bit overhyped more like 3.5 stars. The food was solid, but nothing particularly unique or mind-blowing. Prices were comparable to high-end U.S. steakhouses, and honestly, we might be a bit spoiled back home. You can find similar -- or even better -- quality at places like Ocean Prime, Ruth's Chris, Morton's, or Alexander's. Still, it's worth a visit if you're already in Buenos Aires and want the polished Argentine steakhouse experience, but I wouldn't go out of my way just for this spot. we dined in the wine cellar and it was amazing. the steak cuts are huge, which makes for a lot of leftovers, but everything was prepared very well and the servers were wonderful. i would recommend for anyone that's wants a great evening out read more

Yes, it is very expensive for Argentinian standards but it Don Julio is pretty solid. There's a reason this place has a Michelin star. The quality of the meats is hard to beat and some of the other items on the menu are pretty tasty. The bread they bring out with chimichurri and salsa criolla is super tasty. The tiny empanada they bring by the table is hilarious and not pretty ok. We got a massive steak to share and loved every bite of it. The fries we got on the side made the experience that much better. Overall, I'd say it was worth going to Don Julio but I probably won't come back. The meat is good but I've had just as good, if not better, cuts of meat at asados in Argentinian backyards and in far cheaper restaurants. That being said if you are a tourist coming to Buenos Aires I think it is worth it as you probably won't have that experience. read more

This was a leisurely multi-course dining experience on a beautiful summer afternoon. When you are here enjoy the tomato and definitely order empanadas. My husband hates tomatoes and he enjoyed this one. We split a mini-carafe of the Malbec; it was expectedly excellent. The food was relatively "simple" but so well done. A friend who is local mentioned this is definitely a touristy spot but good and worth a visit. read more

We came with high expectations and the worlds best steak did not disappoint! Our dinner reservation was 1130pm. We arrived at 1030pm and waited around for a table. During this time, we were offered wine and empanadas to tide us over while we waited. Our server spoke decent English. We got the chorizo, steak, grilled asparagus to share. The steak was perfect and paired well with wine. The grilled asparagus was fresh and helped to cut through the meat. The restaurant was extremely busy even though it was close to midnight. Prices are definitely on the high side, but it was worth it! read more

Absolutely the best steakhouse I've been to! We were so lucky to have just walked in at around 2:30pm and was seated outside right away. The service was amazing, the place was awesome and the food!! We weren't that hungry so we split a salad and beef rib, half a bottle of wine and mango dessert. The most perfect meal I've had! They gave us bread, dipping sauces and the best empanada I've ever tasted! And the wine was really good! Definitely a "must" go to when Buenos Aires. read more

Upon arrival, you'll be warmly welcomed by the friendly staff and treated to a glass (or more) of champagne. Once seated, you'll enjoy a complimentary small empanada and freshly baked warm bread. 3.5/5 stars. We wanted to try this spot since it is a 1 Michelin star and #10 on the World's 50 Best Restaurants. Came here for lunch (made reservations in advance). They greeted us with complimentary champagne then brought us to our table. We then got complimentary appetizers: 1 tomato to share, a small empanada each, and bread. We ordered additional appetizers: the cheese plate and eggplant. The cheeses were surprisingly good, except the blue cheese one (I personally don't like super pungent cheeses). I didn't like the eggplant since it was too sour. For the meats, we got the 1/2 short rib and entrecot and ordered medium rare. They provided sauces on the side. I didn't really like the short rib. It was too fatty and not tender. The entrecot was solid, but wasn't mind blowing. A few bites were tasty, but other parts were drier and were on the well-cooked side. The entrecot was huge, so I was stuffed. For dessert, we got the papaya and cheese. The papaya was very sweet. To end the meal, they gave us this chocolate-covered dulce de leche dessert, which was also very sweet. I still enjoyed it cuz it was chocolate. Overall, I don't think this spot is worth the price. The meats should be the star of the show, but for me and my bf, the meats were average and not memorable read more
