I love Don Jose's. The food is alwayys hot, it comes out quickly, tastes great and the staff is always attentive and amazing.

Terrific food and wonderful people. The wait staff is always very efficient. Drinks are delicious.

Hubby and I stumbled upon Don Jose by accident when the first restaurant we were going to was closed. What a pleasant surprise. The guacamole was quite tasty. But it was our entree that deserves all the praise. My husband had a taco/burrito combo and I had the chicken chimichangas....was expecting the same chimichangas I've eaten many times before at other Mexican restaurants. My tastebuds were in for real treat. These by far I believe are the best chicken chimichangas I have ever had. Hubby chimed in that his plate was equally delicious. Came in for lunch with friends before we headed to an event. We were seated immediately and give water. The waiter asked if we wanted anything else to drink, we ordered two other drinks and then looked through the menu. I was pretty surprised by the amount of options they had, I glanced through and decided on the arroz con camarron. I requested to add vegetables to my meal. We all placed our orders and then went back to chatting. While we waited they filled up our chips and salsa. It didn't take long for our food to arrive, and when it did we were all excited. The portion itself was huge considering I requested the lunch meal. I took a biter and was ready to continue scarfing down my meal. Everyone was satisfied and devoured their meals. While we were eating the waiter came to check in on us and refill our waters. When we were done the waiter came by asking if we were finished before taking our plates. The bill was only about $12 which was great considering I had a meal and a drink. Would definitely stop by this place again for a meal. read more

As an opening, you are serve tortilla chips with salsa and this amazing white sauce made with mayonnaise. I ordered a Mexican flan. It taste superb! The carnita entree with refried beans, guacamole and melted cheese taste amazing. The outside looks outdated, but inside, the staff, cook and service is worth 5 stars. read more

This is my go to spot as I've said before. So I'm a little biased. Tonight I had the soft tacos. I must say they lacked seasoning. Still good, just not as good as usual. The Chorizo Dip was the star of this show. It was so flavorful with just the right amount of spice! Man so good. My wife had the #18 combo. Service is outstanding! Ask for Francisco or Carlos. Hands down the best Mexican food I have ever had. My boyfriend took me here when I stayed with his family for the holidays. If you think the food is good, wait till you experience their customer service! It's beyond excellent and I seriously feel like I'm family when I'm there. I think that partially has something to do with the staff calling me their amiga. Um heck yes I'll be your amiga forever if you continue to keep cranking out this delicious food! One of my favorite things about this place is the white sauce! I dream about this sauce all the time - it's just so good! I look forward to visiting his town around the holidays just so I can get my hands on some of this. Oh, and don't get me started on their chicken enchiladas with the mole sauce. THEY NAIL IT! And I sit there like a moo pig inhaling this stuff as the bf watches in disbelief and horror. There's no way I can be ladylike here when the food is this good. Since Los Banditos (in service and food quality) let me down earlier this year I've been desperate to find a place with decent Mexican food around the Colonial Heights area. It isn't the most aesthetically pleasing restaurant, but the best places typically aren't. We had the following: - Chips - Salsa - very good...homemade...not too spicy, but zesty - White-sweet-mayonaisse(y) sauce - a little sweeter than some of the other restaurants in the area - Cheese Dip - outstanding! - Guacamole - not bad, but will not likely get again. Nothing spectacular about it. - Lunch Special #3 (Chicken Enchilada, rice, beans) - very good and the chicken was perfectly shredded - Lunch Chori Pollo - amazing. So good that I had the rest of the meal for dinner too. The beans were the epitome of cheesy, the rice was great and the chicken was tender. The chorizo on top was excellent, too. You will see that many of the reviews mention their wait staff. Our waiter was very good today and offered recommendations on the menu after we asked (the menu is expansive). Unfortunately, one of the servers had on SO VERY MUCH cologne, it actually affected the taste of our food and since cologne and perfumes trigor migraines, I will have to go home and take medication. I love coming here and getting Enchiladas Rancheros. It's a dish with two cheese enchiladas topped with pork, onions and green peppers. It is one of my favorite dishes and tastes great every time I order it. The staff are friendly and attentive which helps me want to return. This is the best restaurant I've ever eaten at. I ordered a taco salad the shell was perfect! It was loaded with exactly what it said on the menu. I also ordered a Dr Pepper to go with my meal, on the way to pay the check my server brought me a to go cup of my drink, I've never had that happen before. great service & food! By far the worse restaurant I have ever been to!!!! When we got our food it was cold we waited for almost an hour to get our new order and never received it and they told Us " we didn't think you wanted it" when wanting to speak with a manager our server just looked at us dumbfounded because he didn't speak English at all. What boggled me more than anything is that we all got alcoholic beverages and we were never ID until we were half way done with our drinks, then our server harassed us about our IDs when they were obviously us he just messed up, and tried to put blame on us. Then when we got our checks they doubled charged us for 2 or 3 things and the manager that night didn't understand what we were saying so we just paid it because we were so fed up. Me and my family LOVE this place, it has great service it is family owned and they are so nice and the food is so good and they give you a lot of it, very reasonable price the fried chicken chimichanga is my favorite alongside the carnitas. Something odd has happened as this restaurant suddenly has rave reviews. They had been caught re-using white sauce and other neat health issues. Mine was FIRST HAND and I will never ever eat there again. I had broken glass in my rice. I showed it to the waiter and he laughed! I refused to eat the meal and they refused to remove it from the bill. No way would I set foot there again. It used to have a packed parking lot all the time and was a great lil restaurant but the parents sold out and left. Its not the same. Nice people, but the food was just awful. Beef in my taco looked like ground...I have no idea what. It tasted like an old bologna sandwich and had so much water that the taco shell ripped, not cracked, in half. Also, a customer that was dining in sent her margarita back because she wanted it on rocks and not frozen. The waiter looked around to see if anyone was watching (he didn't see me seeing him) then snuck the frozen one back in the fridge with the other drinks (beer, sodas). Growing up in Eastside San Jose (CA), I was surrounded by the Mexican culture, Mexican people, and Mexican food... I guess for it being Virginia, the food was good. Hey... so who has actually been to Mexico? ME...a thousand times. Eaten everything from coast to coast and I have NEVER seen white sauce. What the heck is it? Ranch dressing with sugar? It's DISGUSTING and not Mexican. And the lime margaritas are a JOKE... no one would ever order those on the beach in Cabo or Puerto Vallarta or Acapulco...they taste like lime jello?! If you get a margerita, get a Texas one - at least there are real ingredients in there, not lime slurpy slushie stuff. That said, the salsa is good enough. Most of the food is okay. Some of the names are made up...Tostaguac? How about calling it a Tostada with Guacamole?! I don't find the food particularly authentic, but it's passable, some better than the rest. I haven't found a good Mexican restaurant anywhere near here, but if you need a fix, it's the same as the rest. When I ordered the poblano chicken, I got mole. If I wanted mole, I'd of ordered it. Do yourself a favor and GO TO MEXICO and try the real thing. Well, it's cheap and easy to get fat...especially if you're downing sugary white sauce and sugary margaritas and greasy chips! Every time I visit my parents in RVA I insist on going to Don Jose's. The staff are incredibly friendly (our regular waiter makes nice with my dad by calling him amigo and flirts with both my mother and me, etc). The food is fantastic- you wouldn't expect good Mexican in Virginia, but it exists! I'm fond of their quesadilla del mar and their grande Texas margaritas. read more
