I've eaten at hundreds of local Mexican restaurants like this in my life. I saw that this one had only a 3.9 rating but it was the best I could find. I ordered the chiles verde upon recommendation and man, let me tell you, it was fantastic. Some of the best Ive ever had. It makes me think they have abuela back in the kitchen stirring that all day long, because no young man made that! I spiced it up with their homemade habanero sauce for that extra kick. We've frequented this location for years, but recently it's no longer worth visiting. The food has slowly degraded since they "rebranded" from El Cap. Our most recent experience we had a waitress scam us out of $60 (a quesadilla and a Primo bowl somehow came out to $60??) after claiming the menu prices were "no longer accurate." Charge the price you advertise. Otherwise, it's considered fraud/false advertising. Won't be back, suggest everyone else spend their money at a more honest place of business. read more

I got the street taco zito ($13) and it came with carne asada, chorizo , and fresco as well as a side of beans and rice. The food was quite good and I was happy that they actually had a fair amount of meat inside the tacos. Staff were friendly and food came out in a reasonable time. I have patronized this restaurant for 20+ years. Today my food looks like the dog's dinner. Thrown together haphazardly my shrimp quesadilla was skewed all over the container and so greasy that it was falling apart. Who wants to eat a dish so unappealing? Much less pay for slop. I wanted to love this place but it fell shy in a few places. First, I must say that the fish tacos were really good and the $15 pitcher of margarita on Thursday night was totally worth it. The shrimp ceviche was good; however, it wasn't authentic ceviche because it was just their fresh pico de gallo with steamed shrimp added on top. It was very good but not the traditional ceviche. Also, their bathrooms were absolutely disgusting and smelled like there was a major backup. Don't get me wrong, food was good, BUT I have to take off some stars for these misses. I orded steak and chicken enchiladas. It didnt come with rice so I orded that as a side which was $5 I think. The enchilada shell itself tasted like straight mop water. I dont know what they do with it so I took it apart. I wouldve been better off with just chicken, cheese and rice. I did order a strawberry daiquiri and it was good and strong!! I found this place using Yelp while in town on business, it was a short distance from my hotel, I actually picked up dinner here all 4 nights I was in town, I love Mexican food, could eat it everyday really. Their dining room was open, but they also offer call-in/curbside pick up, which I took advantage of since I was trying to stay away from people and crowds while out of town. The curbside pick up was great...call in your order, pull up to one of their designated parking spots for curbside p/u, call and let them know you are there and they bring your order out along with a card machine to run your credit/debit card, very quick and efficient. Every night I ordered something different, everything I had here was fantastic. Out the 4 chicken dishes I had, it would be hard to pick a favorite, but I especially liked the Pollo Max. Pollo Max has grilled chicken strips with a sauce that has a little kick, cooked with zucchini, yellow squash and onions along with rice and their ranchero beans on the sidwith tortillas. This was really good. I saw they had apple pie churros on the menu so I had to try those, they were fantastic, the churros were filled with apple pie filling dusted with cinnamon sugar with caramel drizzled on top, so good. El Caporal is definitely worth checking out, they also have 3 other locations I believe. read more

The first entre, barbacoa, was not good. It doesn't come with the traditional 'consome' and the meat was very tough. I ordered a different plate the following day, quesadilla alpastor, steak, and the meat was very tough, as well. The meat is not marinated for at least three hours, the alpastor sauce is added after it's cooked. I hope they make their food better in the future and stop giving Mexican food a bad rep. read more

It was a cool January evening when I found my way to El Caporal in Colonial Heights. Claimed by my little buddy to be "the best Mexican food in Colonial Heights!" It was high time I put this place to the test. Could El Caporal (aka The Chief) dethrone the mighty Patron? There was only one way to find out. I had no choice but to order my gold standard; carnitas. The server was adorable. She heard my fantastic Southern California Spanish accent and complimented me on it. It would seem there is not an abundance of Mexican people in Colonial Heights. The wait was minimal and the food arrived nice and hot. I really liked the refried beans, I found the rice to be fair. Seems to me they took the shortcut approach to making their Spanish rice. Using a bouillon cube in favor of blending up an onion and tomato. Then we got to the carnitas. They gave me a monster size portion which had a great crunch on them. Could I have used more fat and flavor? Yes, yes I could. They weren't bad, but they weren't good enough to take the #1 spot. I still wiped my plate clean. I fully intend to return to try other dishes. Their tacos, the carne asada platter, burrito asado, pollo sabroso, maybe even their enchiladas? Normally we just grab the family meal to go from the Chesterfield location (I dream about the arroz con pollo) but we decided to take the kids to eat on the patio for the first time since this craziness started since they had cabin fever. The food came super fast, everyone was super nice and the food was amazing as always. My toddler accidentally knocked his cheese dip (which is his favorite food ever) on the ground and started crying and they were super nice about making him feel better about it and even brought him a new one. I I usually stick with a few favorites: the crazy taco salad, pollo alambre, the cheese dip or one of the many delicious combos. Honestly, I don't go to any other Mexican place cause why bother when I have El Caporal right here? The food is FANTASTIC and during the pandemic I had the best take out food ever from this place. They have amazing quesadillas and their Texano special is one of my favorites right now. It's shrimp, steak and chicken over rice and salad with cheese sauce. And yes, it's as amazing as it sounds. Not only was our order wrong---we live quite a distance, not convenient to drive back & make it right---food was bland, uninspired, guacamole downright inedible with a mysterious metallic under taste. Could've been Patio frozen food for all the seasoning (none?) and quality. A costly selection and one we'll not make again. We came in on a weeknight for date night the first time and with our family the second time. The first time was an ok experience but the 2nd time was not. We sat with empty drinks on the table for long periods of time till flagging someone down to get them refilled. When the waitress would take our order she would make sounds which would indicate that she is exasperated and did not want to be taking the order. Although we ordered fajitas with extra tortillas, we never received any tortillas at all. By the time anyone ever came back by the fajitas had long been gone. No one ever came to pick up plates or trash throughout the entire time we were there either. This led to a large mound of dishes and trash that we had neatly gathered, though the table was already crowded to begin with. We ended up deciding to skip ordering dessert as planned because the experience had become so terrible. We would not recommend and wouldn't return. read more

The front employees that showed us to our seat were awesome but that's about it. The booth tables are so close together, it was a tight fit for my 32 week pregnant belly. The chips were terrible and so was the salsa. Our waitress took our order, my dish came with tortillas she asked me if I wanted them and I said "yes." She brought our food out, the tortillas were not on my plate. She asked if we needed anything else I said "yes my tortillas." she acknowledged and left "to get them" she passed by a few times, finally I stopped her asking where my tortillas were. She just walked away came back with tortillas. She seemed annoyed from the beginning. I usually give some grace and leniency towards waitresses/waiters I understand how stressful their job is. I walked into an atmosphere with very few people being seated. The service began very fast paced and helpful. I can't exactly tell you how the food totally is because the staff didn't give me time to eat it! About two minutes after our food arrived, our waiter asked if we were done eating and tried to take my fiancé's plate! We then were rushed another time a few minutes later and just decided this was not the place for anyone that wants to sit down and enjoy a meal. With half of her beer left she just purchased, she got up to use the restroom and the waiter stopped her to ask if she was going to pay the bill....all while I was still sitting down! I immediately paid the bill as the waiter asked me to pay on the spot (mind you we had not been here 11 total minutes seated). I don't like being rushed when it's my money and eating as I already have major esophageal issues that cause me to choke massively on types of food. I asked for my soda to go but the waiter didn't bring me one. My fiancé had to ask the host to go get me one to go. The food is the only reason I rank this establishment a 1/5 stars, probably still worth takeout, but the service was more concerned with filling spots of people waiting outside just arriving than they were the customers sitting down. A staple when I'm in Colonial Heights. Staff members are friendly, service and seating are prompt, and the food is tasty! For a somewhat rich lunch dish, try the pollo sabroso. The chorizo and cheese sauce play together very nicely to offer a fatty yet flavorful chicken dish. The lunch portion is sized perfectly! If you want something a little healthier, the pollo yucatan is also great! More veggies and still full of flavor. Still cheesy (I'm a fan of their cheese sauce). I recently tried the Chicken Degollado and think it will be my go-to selection; even more veggies than the pollo yucatan, the cheese sauce seemed spiced up a little (queso/ jack combination, maybe?), and the chicken was still cooked as expected. No chorizo (*sigh*) but a tasty treat nonetheless! The complementary salsa and white dip are consistent across visits; a bit of spice but not overwhelming. Their chips and dips have always tasted fresh! The restaurant is very clean. You get the atmosphere you would expect for a Mexican restaurant - casual, comfortable, and fun.
