I've eaten at several Mexican restaurants here in Montrose. Understand that I am originally from Arizona, where Mexican food is a bit different; I'm used to 4 or 5 pound burritos that would usually be a meal for two or three. They are also a lot spicier than anything I've eaten in Colorado. That said, this place is the closest I've come yet to "Authentic" Mexican food so far! Their chorizo is especially good! I just had to buy two of them to equal the quantities I'm used to getting in Arizona. The only true negative I have to say about them is that they seem to close unexpectedly; I tried to go there for my birthday on December 9th and they were closed! No note or anything; Just their closed sign up a 3pm in the afternoon. Weird right? I've had this happen two other times in the last two months. Who doesn't love a fat, stuffed burrito? Not this girl. I think the only thing I'd love more is the "smothered" option, but I resisted this time. There are several choices here, plates, tacos, breakfasts, and, of course, burritos of every persuasion. Simply, all of the regulars you'd expect from a Mexican food shop and some you should try because you can. I asked the nice girl behind the counter for the most popular burrito, and she was quick to say "the California," so I ordered just that. I added beans because, to me, a burrito without beans is like PB&J without the J. Mom had the machaca burrito. We both seemed delightfully satisfied - there wasn't a lot of talking between the two of us. We were busy chowing down, trading off pours of red or green salsa in between bites. Delicious for sure, though next time I'd opt to eliminate the potatoes. They were good in their own way but added a little too much "oily" taste for my liking. Mom didn't seem to mind. She finished hers. With about 8 bites remaining, I ended up unfolding the burrito and eating the insides. Ample parking, but again, it likely gets busy at the peak meal times, so prepare for that. They do a bang up take out business, so keep that in mind the next time you want to surprise your friends with lunch. I'd absolutely eat here again. So long for now. read more

Donny G's has been a staple of the Montrose community for a very long time. I've never had anything but great food from them. Their breakfast burritos are fantastic. Don't mind the reviews from whiny TX and CA interlopers. I guess they're expecting to get their shoes shined in addition to a burrito. "I feel personally violated by that guacamole" is what my husband uttered as we pulled away. So funny and so true. Seriously, we took one taste of that diluted avocado slurry and, sorry, it was just wrong, we didn't touch it again. (If you are vegan, find somewhere else). We were in a hurry to eat before passing through Montrose, which led to a series of poor decisions on our part, which I will detail: 1. Not turning around and leaving when the young teenaged employee sat on the counter as she fished out food from the styrofoam to-go container, never ceasing to eat while we asked questions about the menu. It was unappealing in ways I will leave the reader to imagine. 2. Choosing to stay when the counter employees knew very little about the ingredients in their dishes. Are the beans baked in lard? Your guess is as good as mine. BUT, I felt reassured when seeing the "guacamole" that there's no way this restaurant would waste money on lard (thankfully in this case) when they could dilute beans or any ingredients with water. So bad, all of it. 3. Not cutting our losses and just leaving when "bean and cheese burrito" was suggested as one of two vegan options. Small businesses are hard pressed in this failing economy, and they should be supported, but I have to draw a line at the watered down avocado. This place makes me sad. I hope they move past whatever shamelessness is seeping through their food ethic. Also, it is a little strange to me how often we go to a new restaurant and it seems like we are the first customers to have ever asked if there are animal products in their food. Maybe my standards are too high here (i.e. they merely exist), but wouldn't those working in the restaurant industry have even peripheral awareness of whether they serve anything vegan..? P.S. This place is doing its part to clog our oceans, rivers, and land with excessive plastic packaging, in case you happen to be someone who cares about such things. read more

Everything in there is dirty. The containers that hold the plastic utensils have dirty handprints and food stuck to them. The drink machine was sticky and dirty. Every single table had old food on it from previous diners. I asked the girl behind the counter to clean a table off for me, and she grabbed a dirty, grey rag and wiped all the tables off with it, leaving cloudy smears that smelled sour from the old rag. Food is served in styrofoam boxes, with the foam sort of melting on the inside. My enchiladas fell apart and became a heavy, soupy mess of canned enchilada sauce, stringy cheese and wet corn tortillas. It was so gross. I get the impression that the owner has left the place on autopilot and the staff is undertrained, bored and apathetic. I dumped all my food in the dirty-looking trash receptacle and left without eating any of it. I truly don't know why I even ordered it after seeing how filthy the place was. Coming from the Midwest I love stopping at these small taco shops as we don't have them at home. This one matched my expectation. So much so I stopped twice. My first stop was for lunch. How could you go wrong when the place has so many white contractor pick up trucks out front? I ordered the rolled tacos (my usual). They may be simple but they were good. Not over cooked like some other places. Enough toppings for each bite without being too much. But seeing other people's meals I thought I should come back. And so I did for breakfast the next morning. I got the Montrose Special burrito. It was big and full of meats and potatoes. About half way through I told myself to stop. At three quarters I had to get more salsa. And then it was done and I was beyond full. And then I left for the second time in two days a happy customer. read more

They can make a REAL taco! The adobada is my go-to because it is always flavorful, and they pack those tacos so full that it's hard to pick them up (grab a fork for all the bits that fall out). They do get supremely busy during lunch--because they're that good. Even if you call ahead, make sure you give them a good half hour, and you won't be disappointed. read more

The gentleman at Big O tires said they had the best burritos in town so I came here for breakfast. They are doing takeout only everyone's wearing masks I really appreciated all of that. I got a vegetarian breakfast burrito and although it was tasty and filling, @ Almost 8 dollars, I wouldn't say it was awesome. I think I may have ordered the wrong thing because I saw Mexican eggs with red and green chili and that's what I really would've gotten if I had just walked in and said "breakfast burrito". DO NOT GO HERE I recently went before closing time and they got my to go order wrong. By the time I got home and realized they gave me the wrong item it was 9pm and they were closed. There was no option to leave a voicemail. I was aware that they open early for a breakfast rush, so I decided to call at 10am so as not to interrupt their busy breakfast or lunch. When I called, a lady answered. I told her that I had been given the wrong combo the night before, and that I would like either a refund or a replacement meal. She became very rude and stated that I should have called before they closed. I explained that I had gone to pick up my order prior to the closing but only realized the error when I got home, at which point they had already closed. She continued to speak to me very irritated and condescending. She said that I would have to bring the food (which by the way tasted HORRIBLE ----i had tried to eat it but couldn't) to prove to her that it was indeed their food. I told her that she could just speak with the evening crew and see if there had been a mixup. She told me that if I didn't bring the food back, she would not address my problem. I asked to speak with the manager. She said that she was the owner. She was completely rude and not interested in resolving my problem. So I brought the food back and was met at the counter by a young man. I asked to see the manager or the owner. He told me that he had been instructed to deal with me, and that I would not be able to speak with a manager or owner. He asked for the bag of day old food and handed me a handful of cash. I told him that the cash did not represent what I had paid for the meal, as it did not include the tax that I had paid. The young man stated that he was instructed to only give me the menu price and that I was not going to be able to speak with anyone in charge. As a Californian who is living here in Montrose, I for one am very judgemental on Mexican food. The Bad: For one, I didn't feel welcome on my last few visits. As I proceeded to order, I smiled at the cashier and said hi. She failed to smile and did not say hi back to me. The carne asada is okay at best, but it doesn't seem to be cooked as I expect it to be cooked. The color of the meat is grayish and is sometimes too salty for my liking. I am not certain how it's marinated if at all. The Good: The breakfast burritos are awesome and on point. This is definitely one of your "hole in the wall" restaurants but so delicious! Had several things and they are all so good, very filling and cheap prices. I have come here for a long time and am usually very pleased. Today I ordered a number 6 combination which is an enchilada and a burrito. When I got back to the office I had a breakfast burrito. I was in the area for work. We visited Don Gilberto's to get 4 breakfast burritos for the all small crew. The young man gives us a bag and we walk out. Once arriving to work I went to divvy out burritos to find we were short. I called them now being 45 min out and asked them to refund half of the amount $15. The man said no it's not our fault you grabbed the wrong food. Bahahahaha. The young lady said they are blaming you for grabbing the wrong food. Bahahaha. Manager I can't refund over the phone you must come back in. NO you can do it over the phone I will give you the card number. Too incompetent to know how to do anything other than mess up food orders. I DO NOT RECOMMEND. If you do study your order open it up and make sure you're getting what you paid for.
