I love a good Mexican Bakery, so I stopped in here to grab my favorite - a slice of Dulce de Leche while in the area on a late Saturday morning.
The place is pretty rough exterior and it doesn't get any better when you walk in the front door. They were out of Tres Leche (what??) and the polite lady behind the counter tried to steer me into having a chocolate flan creation. Not being a big fan of flan, I passed and selected a palmier from the self-service cabinet behind me. I'm sorry to report that this was the driest and stalest item that I've ever encountered. Palmiers are usually one of my to go items when visiting Mexican Bakeries, so I know that they are flaky, but this was just stale and brittle and disposed of after two attempted bites.
With an El Mercado Fresco supermarket opening just around the corner, I'm afraid Don Chago really needs to up their game if they want to survive playing against a full service Mexican grocery store that offers a great bakery. read more
