The Long Version: District Deli opened up around March 2025 in the space that was Bismallah Pies (was Charlie's Groceteria before that). My husband and I dropped by to pick up a sandwich to share. The sandwiches are all named after nearby streets, which really gives it that neighbourhood feel. All meat sandwiches are $13.99 and vegetarian sandwiches are $12.49. You can also build your own for $13.99 where you can choose 2 meats, one cheese, and whatever vegetables you like. We went with the build your own option. We got roast beef and prosciutto cotto, fresh mozzarella and lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, pickled onions, pickled eggplants, and roasted red peppers, with a bit of honey mustard. The sandwich was really good. The bread was fresh, as were the other ingredients. It was a bit pricey in my opinion, but this is in comparison to other similar sandwich shops with $8-10 sandwiches (like 50 Two Sandwiches or Shorty's Sandwiches), but they are in industrial parts of town, so I get it, rent in Hintonburg is higher. District Deli only has cold sandwiches. No hot sandwiches, at least not at the time of the writing of this review. Service was courteous and efficient. Street parking only. Review #118 (2025)

The candied club was delicious - you can get it with crispy or grilled chicken and it comes with candied bacon, lettuce, tomato and red onions but you can customize it your liking. My husband got the fuhgeddaboutit which was with salami, capacollo and prosciutto. If you get the candied club, you don't have to wait in line. You can go straight to the cash since that's their best seller. It's mostly a take out place so there isn't much of a place to sit but they did have two picnic tables outside. A great Ottawa gem!

It's tucked away in an industrial part of town, but those who know know they make incredible sandwiches. Their Candied Bacon Club is their most popular sandwich. Prices have gone up over the years. It's currently $11 (as of June 2024). You can get the chicken grilled or breaded. It's real chicken breast meat and is delicious with the sweet candied bacon. My only complaint is they are too generous with the sauce, so the sandwich is a little too wet and messy. You can choose your bread. The Jalapeno Cheddar is the best, IMO. However, Italian Herb seems to be the most popular. They also have rotating special sandwiches. The Honey Tender ($11) is great. It's chicken tenders dipped in a honey hot sauce with pickles and lettuce. It's also really saucy and messy to eat, lol. You can also build your own deli sandwich for $10. You choose the bread, up to 3 meats, and a cheese. They have a list of toppings you can choose, as well as different dressings. Service is courteous and efficient. Even though there is always a long line up. The line moves fast. There are a few seats along the window to eat in but pretty much everyone just gets takeout. If you eat in, you will have a constant stream of people lining up next to you, lol. The sandwich shop is in a little plaza and there are some picnic tables near the parking lot. If you have to eat on-site, I'd recommend eating at the picnic tables or in your car ;) Lots of free parking available in the plaza parking lot. If you like sandwiches and you're able to make it out to Antares Drive on a weekday (they are closed on weekends) between 10am and 3pm (their business hours), I recommend giving this place a try. I don't live or work in the area anymore, so their limited hours make it hard for me to go there. Otherwise, I'd be there often. (128)

The smell here is your first clue that your in for somethings delicious, if you weren't hungry when you arrived you will be once the aroma hits your nostrils. They have a selection of Italian pre-packaged products and various snacks, as well as cold drinks to complete your meal. That said, this joint is all about the sandwiches. They'll make whatever combo of meats, cheese, and toppings you want but if your unsure just pick one of the options on the board. I almost always get the #14. It's all the delicious Italian meats you could want plus havarti, lettuce, and mayo (exchange the regular havarti for the herbed havarti if you'd like). The bread is amazing quality as well. You really can't go wrong here. They have some sandwiches in a case ready to go as well, such as the steak which I hear is amazing. The staff here couldn't be more friendly and accommodating which is no small feat for a place this busy. There are no tables so it's takeout only and It IS cash only however they have an ATM for the unprepared. Oh, lest I forget, this amazing and quality sandwich is less than 10 bucks! This spot is a real gem and if you find yourself nearby you absolutely have to try it out.

No sauce (I prefer a drier sandwich, lol). The man who made my bread was super nice. And they have very good sanitation practices. Food preparers wear gloves. The man prepped my bread, meats and cheese, and then put it in the toaster, since I asked to have it toasted. Then he cashed out the lady ahead of me. Then I saw him change his gloves before he came back and finished preparing my sandwich. I wished all restaurants followed these practices. Bravo! My only complaint, and it's totally on me for choosing the toppings, but it was a bit too salty with the black olives, pickles, eggplant AND sun-dried tomatoes. On this visit, I ordered the Thai Noodle Soup with chicken, which was A+. Tony had one of their sandwiches and side salad, which he thoroughly enjoyed! The Long Version: I love food places tucked away in industrial parks. So when I had a medical appointment in an industrial part of town, I looked up all the eateries nearby and Shorty's popped up. The first sandwich was a grilled chicken sandwich and the second sandwich was a build your own 3 meats sandwich. I chose ham, turkey and roast beef. I got havarti as the cheese. For the grilled chicken sandwich, I got double smoked cheddar as the cheese. I got both sandwiches on the cheese and jalapeno bread and got the same toppings on both: lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, pickles, spicy eggplant, crispy onions and crispy jalapenos. I didn't get any sauce/dressing on the sandwiches because I don't like wet sandwiches. Both sandwiches were delicious. They can come off a bit standoffish at first but nothing could be further from the truth. Rob spoke to all 4 people ahead of me and even knew some of them by name and things going on in their lives. On this visit I had a cup of Chicken Gumbo and a Turkey Sandwich. The Gumbo was full of sausage and veggies and had a nice flavour to it. The sandwiches however really are the star of the show here as Chuck pointed out. The bread was so fresh it was still warm. And the turkey piled about 3 inches thick. I opted to add cheddar cheese for the bargain price of $0.50 bringing the price to $6 for the soup and sandwich. An unbelievable bargain!
