Medora, North Dakota…read more September 2026 Very unexpected greeting. I was inside the restaurant waiting for my husband to park and was told that I could not stay in the restaurant. I had to wait outside until my husband arrived. I later find out it was due to a senator and his entourage of security coming in to eat. I did sit down and looked at the menu. Asked the waiter if the chicken was fried fresh. He said no. I asked if there was another item on the menu that was fresh. He said no. I asked again if there was anything on the menu that was freshly made in the kitchen. He informed me that everything was prepared elsewhere, frozen, and brought in. I decided to leave the restaurant. I would not eat in a restaurant that everything was prepared and thawed out to eat. And the menu prices were extremely high for already prepared food. Such a cute town and nice idea for a restaurant. However, why would you not make your own food?

During our near-annual cross country road trips to North Dakota (well, the opposite corner of the…read morestate, anyway... outside of Grand Forks) we always try to plan a day to enjoy Theodore Roosevelt National Park. With COVID-19 high in everyone's consideration list, we planned our stops carefully. Of course In this town, most folks looked at us wearing masks like we were "Gulldern Californians" (we are) and acted like we should care what they thought (we didn't.) a few smart ass comments from some real tough guys-- you're a total bad-ass talking to my eight year old daughter like that, Cletus) but nothing worth going to jail for, and I just tipped my cap and wished folks a very nice rest of the day. As for the Convenience Store, it's one of the few places in town this trip that showed real appreciation for my tourist dollars, and kindness just because "Uffdah, yeah you betcha!" Nice people here. We gassed up for our car tour through the national park, bought some drinks and snacks, and even some little trinket for my youngest son. They have more items than you'd think they would... steaks and dairy stuff? Cool beans. OG gas pumps... they work great... if you don't like it, Dickinson is another 35 miles East. We'll be back to see our friends here. Yep, maybe we'll wear masks just to cheese-off the locals.

The food wasn't super quick, then again we weren't in a hurry, so no worries. Really pleased with our meal and wish the Windy's staff the best of luck for continued success!

It was very chaotic with all of the people upstairs, but she made sure everybody got their order. As for the food, I did order the tri-tip sandwich as she did mention that was probably one of the most popular items. As I walked in it was like the old EF Hutton commercials where everyone froze and stared. Thankfully the bartender/waitress with the ACDC Highway To Hell shirt was friendly. I just wanted some grub and she hooked me up. This is not a heathy area to dine, as pretty much the entire menu is just a big plate of brown. Fried tater tots. Fried Cheese Balls. Fried Shrimp. I was the ONLY person in the dining area on a Saturday night at 8:00. The slots and drinks must keep them in business because nobody was crashing the doors for the food. While eating I got to look around and like some other reviewers said - it was like being in the middle of a garage sale. Knickknacks and stuff everywhere. Seeing Christmas decorations on the piano when it was 75 degrees outside and summer just ending made me wonder what live is really like in this area. I thank them for the experience even if it was very odd.
