"I've tried and tried to no avail You just can't seem to let…read moreme down You drive a hard bargain" (Emmylou Harris) We enjoy our bargain stores and are fans of Ocean State Job Lot, Big Lots and Ollies. Two days ago, we made our first visit to the Ollies on Grafton Street in Worcester. We picked up our "go to" Ollies staples -coffee K Cups (BTW, we do recycle them) and found some very good values on $4 or $5 for a box. Although we did get some good values, we thought the overall coffee inventory was lower than in other Ollies. We usually pick up some odds and ends in the food section and Ollies had a good selection of soups and salsas. One odd thing I saw was a trend of messiness in some of the store's sections. There were area rugs dumped all over the floor in one aisle. Now of course, I don't know how that happened, nor how long that mess was there, but I suspect a slovenly customer was looking at merchandise and couldn't have been bothered by picking up the mess they had carelessly created. But why on earth hadn't an employee noticed and remedied that mess? Another example of inattention was how the big cartons of K Cups were stacked; it looked as though their forklift or pallet jack operator had a few too many adult beverages before saying "that messy off-center precariously leaning stack is EXACTLY the way I wanted it too look". Overall, we had a typical Ollies experience, and that's a good one!

Actually some prices are not the cheapest but if you look, you can find some deals. From books, to garden care, to home ware, to some foods, even big appliances like air conditioners, school supplies, sports, toys, they might just have it. Not everything but you have to look. That's why you would come. To find a deal. It's not the best looking store or tidy, but that's the vibe here. Bargains, bargains, like at a warehouse. What's fun is actually to read the signs in the store. They are funny and very original. It's in a plaza with other stores, so there's plenty of parking. If in the area, I would check it out. But I wouldn't drive all the way just for a bargain. You could go to Big Lots, Ocean State Job Lot for similar items and in a nicer looking store. But you would miss out on the signs that advertise this store. That was the only thing I enjoyed.

The Upper Section includes big box stores such as Target, Kohl's, Best Buy and Dick's, along with some smaller scale stores such as Nordstroms Rack, Michaels, and PetSmart. There are a couple of restaurants in the Upper Section, Chili's and TGI Fridays, two places I never visit. The Lower Section has more stores and a few restaurants including LongHorn Steakhouse, Red Robin and Panera Bread. There is a large Barnes and Noble and Blackstone Valley 14 Cinema de Lux. There is also a 110 Grill adjacent to the Cinema. The Cinema and the 110 Grill have their own parking lots. Two new restaurants are under construction in this section, The Yard House and Shake Shack. The Yard House is expected to have a standalone building, evident by the huge construction project taking up a large amount of parking in the Lower Section. During weekends and busy holidays, traffic police are out in force at the Shoppes, in part because there is only one way in and out of this sprawling shopping center. Traffic and parking can be an issue depending on where you want to park during peak periods.

Northborough has more stores and no traffic problem because the police aren't involved in clogging up access.

I have spoken to the management about this and they were very helpful. They even checked security footage, and, given how long I have been a customer, they were very receptive. A woman with very long, frizzy, dyed-black hair, heavy-set in tight blue jeans, appears to have been videotaping me, holding her phone straight up, with her back to me on the way into the store. She then stops, keeping the phone straight up, so I turned around and rode my cart out the entrance and back outside just to get out of her camera range. As I shop I go into aisle 3 and I have proven with my receipt I needed to be there. This woman is standing near the end of the aisle with her back to me and she extends her left arm to show me her camera's eyes. I get what I need and again, turn around and go back out the way I came in to avoid her camera's gaze. She did not move the whole time. After I leave I go to put my cart away. I am vey close to the brick wall to the right of the entrance. She suddenly drives her cart up to me on my right and I am now standing between her and the wall. I see her camera's eyes (filming me at close range) and the back of her head. I turn to my left to walk around her to avoid her completely. When I get to the car, she is still standing there and looking my way. Then she won't leave the parking lot. Then she drove around the back. I want what she actually did to be known if she now chooses to identify me as a part of her life. I can guarantee you no one reading this has ever heard of anything like this at this location before now.

Today the cashier, Vasantai, was so pleasant and helpful and surprisingly the other customers that were shopping were very talkative. I think we were all amazed at the 50% off already reduced prices with an additional 25% off coupon. The selections of clothing varied. They had all seasonal clothing available and on sale. I was bummed because I had a gift card at home and didn't expect to shop the way I did.

Once the Amazon item is returned, Koh's provides a $5 coupon good for a week. When combined with other coupons, such as a 30% off coupon, and then again combined with a sale (buy one package of socks, get the second package for 50% off), a shopper can receive a much better value than purchasing the same items from Amazon, etc. In this case, my items cost $3.50 each, whereas they were selling on Amazon for more than twice that amount. However, if I wasn't already in the store, I would not have bothered. The customer service line was at least 10 people deep, the checkout line was about 20 people with only two registers open, the merchandise displays were a disorganized mess and their wifi went down for a short time (so they couldn't take returns or process purchases). For those focused on price over service, this may be your place!
