Bad service. It was a great place back then, but then is changed to $1.25! Why? Inflation!

Usually busy but the stocking staff are helpful and friendly. It's an older store but well maintained so shopping is a pleasant experience. They have self checkout as well as a few tended lanes so you pick. Really can't beat their prices!

It was the location, really. I was criss-crossing the state on a long camping trip, and this…read morehappened to be where we were in town, and we jumped off the road and into the parking lot, and went in to look for supplies. We had limited cooking materials, but did have a cooler and a stove, so we knew we could make something tasty but simple. A quick appetite check, and we ended up settling on fajitas. We grabbed an onion, a couple of peppers, some spices, some pre-cut fajita steak, and the largest soft flour tortillas known to man. Massive. Bigger than your head. Bigger than a dinner plate. Massive. Of course we also grabbed chips (chips are life) and a small assortment of Jarritos because what are fajitas without chips and Jarritos? NOTHING. So the accoutrements came too. A little ice and we were all set. Ready for camping trip magic. And magic it was. It's beyond the scope of Food City, but everything came together beautifully despite the fact that I definitely forgot to buy camping fuel, so we had to ditch the large camp stove in favor of the small backpacking stove. But I did learn that you can indeed cook with a massive frying pan on top of a tiny, 3.5-ounce backpacking stove. I thought the produce section was fine. Not the most impressive stuff, but enough things in decent enough shape that fajitas were possible. The meat was okay, decently priced and I'm glad they have the pre-sliced option (because somebody -- me -- also forgot the knife) and the quality was fine. Overall it's not the tidiest store but it had lots of unexpected treasures from Mexico and Latin America. And that made for a great dinner of fajitas, eaten from a giant frying pan off of a tiny stove, wrapped into massive tortillas while watching one of the great sunsets of my life in a national monument later in the trip.

My optimism was than shattered by Officer mall cop mayor of grumpy town. "You can't bring that drink in here!". Damn, it's June in Tucson and I'm gonna be Thirsty and will not stay long based on that whole thing where I need water to live on a 109° day thing. Whatever's. This store is fab for kids/juniors clothes. Just hide those juice boxes! Great stuff at $3-$5 a peice. Their purse selection was top notch and impressive. Makeup lasted for half a shelf (all unknowns) hair lasted about one shelf and consisted of grocery store brands dove basically. Just Dove. Did find my favorite brand of micellar water however and bought them out. Ladies clothing section may have been the smallest section in the store. Plus size , and jeans were aplenty and cute. No jewelry to speak of. Housewares were good as far as decor and tables, etc. The other housewares though- like rugs and towels. They were unpleasant just to touch! The store also has this awful chemical dank smell. I went to try on a shirt in the dressing room ( which looks like a place for hiding hostages) and asked if they had a restroom I could use. She said "no bathrooms here" with bewildering enthusiasm. Guess it was time to go. Oh, and guess what!!!! They are hiring! I wouldn't apply though. Every employee looks like they want to kill themselves. Maybe they are hiring in preparation for that??

It's also a lot bigger than it would appear from the street. Around the corner is the Treasure Shop, also run by the Symphony Women's Association, which has the fancier furniture and antiques but Second Fiddle has tons of more reasonably priced housewares, clothing, and knick-knacks. LOTS of great women's clothing, purses, and shoes in many styles from vintage to modern, with more emphasis on the 60s, 70s, 80s. There is a dressing room and the women running things were sweet and friendly. Standard prices for most items are posted around the store and at the register, but make sure you bring cash as they do not have a card reader! Proceeds seem to support Symphony education and outreach programs, so you can feel good about spending your cash.
