The new Hooksett Wal-Mart is now a Supercenter located across the river on Route 3A. Ocean State Job Lot specializes in selling overstocked and close-out merchandise at very low discounted prices including housewares, baking/kitchen items, outdoor items, apparel, toys, electronics, sundries, hardware, furniture, Oriental rugs, office/school supplies, books, cards, pet supplies, decorations, seasonal items, a pretty good selection of non-perishable groceries, and more. This store is pretty organized compared to other discount stores (ie. Big Lots) I've shopped at and I can move around this store without tripping over things. I've shopped here several times since the store opened and on each visit the some of the selection keeps changing with high turnover. Earlier this year, they had Crocs for under $10 and For Dummies books for $3.99, great prices, but no longer in stock on my last visit. In the food section, there were plenty of pastas, sauces, can goods, cereals, oils, nuts, snacks, boxed foods, preserves, and bottled drinks. I got some Gnocchi for $1.25 each and marinara sauce for $1.50 each and some mixed nuts for $2.50. I do shop around and found some of the prices for similar items were cheaper than Wal-Mart, and many of the smaller items (school supplies) I can get for less at Dollar Tree. The food prices are a real bargain here compared to Shaw's across the lot. Recently, I was heading to a meeting, but I realized did not have a tie and a nice belt. So I decided to pull into Ocean State Job Lot and I picked up a men's belt for $5 and tie for $4.99, in and out! This store saved the day!

I was looking forward to checking out Jason's Joy, but unfortunately it just wasn't for me…read more The business is advertised as a thrift store, but it felt much more like someone's personal collection with a storefront. The inventory was mostly heavily worn clothing, older furniture, and random odds and ends. We spent some time looking around but didn't find a single thing worth buying. The experience itself didn't help. There was a dog barking before we even came through the door. As we walked toward it, the dog was shut in a bathroom, and I overheard a comment suggesting it only reacted after seeing me. Since it had already been barking before I entered, that struck me as an odd and unnecessary thing to say. The front door was left wide open, and while browsing I was bitten by a flying insect inside the store. I ended up with welts afterward. I know bugs can happen anywhere, but it definitely wasn't something I expected while shopping indoors. The store also felt surprisingly loud and cramped. Between the barking dog, conversations carrying throughout the shop, and the tight layout, it wasn't a relaxing place to browse--even though we were the only customers there. What honestly surprised me most was seeing the near-perfect online ratings afterward. Everyone has different tastes, but based on my visit, I just don't understand the hype. I left empty-handed and with bug bites, which isn't exactly the thrift-store experience I was hoping for. I do wish the owners the best, but my visit was disappointing enough that I don't see myself returning.
