Let's start off with the parking lot area. There are quite a few parking spots, including four…read morehandicap parking spots, and I was truly amazed that every single person parked in the handicap spots, except for one had no handicapped placard or handicap license plate. The store was an utter disaster. They had carts of merchandise sitting at the end caps to the point you could barely pass by. The shelves were in such disarray that items were in areas that they shouldn't have been. I counted five staff, and only saw two of the five working one was a checker and the other one was sitting on the floor, stocking shampoo. The prices are not cheap certain things you can find at a good price, but others are extremely expensive for the product and the products are smaller than what you get in the grocery store. I got in line for checkout. They had one checker for a line of six people and two people in line were employees buying a drink, and they were wasting a lot of time, talking and laughing with each other while they each checked out very unprofessional. The poor young lady at the check stand just look dead tired like she's been doing that for hours without a break. You would think the gentleman who was the general manager would be a bit more professional, and would've opened another check stand, but no, it was more important that he bought his drink and made the announcement he was paying cash and then when and sat in his vehicle. The whole place just needs a really deep cleaning.

Prices are cheaper than the IGA. There's 2 checkout stands and there can be a line as a result. Lots of coupons on the app.

I had a definite so-so experience at the Dollar General on Reynolds Avenue and thought pretty hard…read moreabout how many stars to give it. I decided to give them the benefit and rate them at 3 stars instead of just 2 stars. The first thing that struck me when walking in was the mess and disaster that many of the aisles and shelves were. Items were cluttered on the shelves and many of the aisles were tight squeezes due to boxes and other items blocking the way. Additionally, there appeared to be no one on duty at all. I was the only customer in the store and actually made it all the way around the entire store, walking down almost every aisle and was never acknowledged or never encountered a staff member. I was looking for something specific, so I kind of took my time looking and didn't find it anywhere; and needed to try to ask someone. I walked to the front counter to see if someone was in the office, and lo and behold, someone called out that they'd be right there. The employee on duty came out and turned out they didn't have what I wanted (a wall calendar). Bummer! Now, it was later in the evening and maybe she was working on paperwork or something ... so I'm not holding that too much against her, but it would've been nice to have some staff presence in the store. That said, they do have tons and tons of affordable items in multiple departments. Food, housewares, party supplies, seasonal items, and home decor are the main categories they have. Plus, for the kids, they even have a fairly good toy section with inexpensively priced fun for the little ones. While it was a bust on what I came in for ... all-in-all, it was a fine store and perhaps I'll drop in another day for something that I know they'll have. Maybe I caught them on a busy paperwork night, a short-staffed day, and they hadn't gotten to cleaning up the clutter??

Daiso may be the Dollar General of Japan, but that does not mean that their wares are of the same…read morequality. In fact, it might be closer to say that Daiso is what you get when an Ikea, and a high-quality Japanese budget retailer get together and make a baby. There may be a lot of fluff and effluvia here, but there are also a lot of useful, down-to-earth, inexpensive home goods here that put anything you can find in an American retailer, for a comparable price, to shame. It's nice to have a shop that sells useful, elegant, quality goods at reasonable prices, a niche in which the Japanese uniquely excel. First-time Daiso shoppers may experience a slight bit of culture shock at having to convert prices from yen to dollars, but once they're hooked on all the wonderful, useful and inexpensive goods for sale here, that unfamiliarity will be fleeting. In particular, categories such as organization, kitchenware, stationery and home goods are not only cheaper here, they are more durable, useful, clever, and long-lasting. I would take anything purchased at a Daiso over any Walmart product, hands-down, any day of the week. They are simply not comparable. If you are simply one of the few who are unlucky enough to find a defective product, oh no...you're out a buck fiddy. Try again with something else. The thing about Japan, and Japanese culture, is they are relentless in their pursuit of perfection, which also includes innovation at absurdly cheap prices. Daiso is a reflection of this, and anyone who has ever been to Japan (myself included, multiple times) can attest to this: it's in their very nature. Their "worst effort" is often on-par with some of our "best". So sit back, relax, and enjoy this very limited presentation of some of their more modest offerings. And when you are starting to become convinced of their superior way of thinking, manufacturing, organizing, and presentation...feel free to delve deeper, and enjoy what you find. When you do, I'll see you at Uwajimaya.
