The outside of the store is in a strip center with a liquor store, a tackle shop, and close to a few shrimp stands. The outside of the store looks nice, but the inside was a different story. Since the store is newer, I expected it to be neater and clean. Boxes and items were everywhere, out of place, and the aisles arrangements didn't make much sense. The floor is like a warehouse, and the store is poorly lit. It was almost empty on a Saturday afternoon. The merchandise is your typical dollar store, so I picked up my items (once I found them). I asked if the store was remodeling since so many items were out of place. The staff member said he was from another store and didn't know. With so many commuters from Ravenel/Hollywood/Meggett coming in/out of Charleston each day and neighborhoods on Bees Ferry Rd, this is a great location for a Dollar Store, but so disorganized that I will probably skip it next time.

The difficulty of course as I walked through this place was looking for signs to direct me to cleaning supplies which is what I was there for. As I walked about, the linoleum tile floor had dark spots on it. Considering it was a white tile floor, it was very evidently dirty. They did not have what I was looking for but I cannot blame them for that. Still it was not a very inviting place to go in and want to spend a few dollars.

A battery powered toothbrush scanned $3.50 HIGHER than the tag. Clerk said he couldn't do anything about it so I would have to pay the higher price or not get it. I did not buy it! That took my total below $25 so I didn't get the $5 off $25 Saturday special either. Then when I looked at my receipt I realized that another item labeled $4 had actually scanned $4.50. Like I told the clerk, if people can't depend on the price tags to be correct, it really isn't beneficial to shop there especially when they don't honor the tags when you point it out to them. Not sure if I will go back to that store, but if I do, I will definitely be paying attention.

Since Dollar Tree increased its base…read moreprice to $1.25 (and sometimes $1.50), some items are actually cheaper at Dollar General now because they still have a whole aisle of $1 items. I mostly shop here for drinks, household items like cleaning supplies, and the occasional candy/snacks. Dollar General is pretty couponer friendly, and you can find Facebook group and pages that teach you how to find deals here. The trick to shopping here is to use the app. Every Saturday, the app has a coupon for $5 off $25, and that coupon combines with other digital coupons on the app AND deals in the store. Coke 12-packs are usually 3/$16 or 3/$17 which is cheaper than the grocery store sales. Occasionally the app has a $5 off $25 coupon for other days of the week, or the coupon will be $10 off $40. Use the app for your first order, and if you need more items, the register almost always prints another $5 off $25 coupon you can turn around and use on other things. If I'm done shopping, I just leave the printed coupon with the cashier and tell her she can pass it onto another customer who doesn't have a coupon. The only con to this DG store is that the entrance to the parking lot is a little weird. There's a private driveway just beside the DG entrance, so you have to be sure not to accidentally turn in there. I also never make a left turn leaving because Hwy 61 traffic is insane.

However, the week before Easter was definitely a busy one for this store, and they were cleaned out of a lot of their typical offerings. For example, their take-and-bake pizzas are an easy and decent dinner after a day at the beach, but to our surprise, there were none left when we stopped in around 5 PM on a Wednesday. I'm confident that this not a regular occurrence - but something to note if you're visiting during the busy season. I will echo other reviewers that mentioned narrow aisles and an interesting layout. This store is definitely on the smaller side, and can feel crowded when there's multiple people in one aisle. One way to avoid this is shopping outside of peak hours ... early in the morning our later at night. The cashiers are mostly friendly and always fast. If you come from a state with Kroger or Fry's instead of Harris Teeter, rest assured that you can still input your phone number for your shopper rewards. Another positive is that I haven't noticed a difference in prices from this store and non-touristy grocery stores. Again, it does the trick for being the only grocery store at Freshfields. However, it could certainly use a little love and a few updates.
