Beware this holiday season!…read more This store sells predatory NetSpend Visa Prepaid cards. THEY ARE NOT GIFT CARDS! Yesterday, Dec. 19, I hastily bought a handful of NetSpend Prepaid Visa cards at this location, thinking that they were Visa Gift Cards. They are not! I loaded hundreds of dollars on them, altogether. The cashier was happy to do it, and didn't point out that the recipient can't use the card without first signing up for an account & verifying their identity, and then there's a $1.50/transaction fee for every transaction on the card after that. Not only that, but after 90 days, there's a $5.95 inactivity fee, a $2.95 ATM withdrawal fee, and fees for every possible path to getting your money out. You also can't activate more than one card as an individual, so there is literally no way for me to get my money back. I spent half an hour on the phone with NetSpend support, working through broken communication, until finally she said there was nothing she could do to help. (I was very polite and patient through all of this, and it's not her fault, but that is not an acceptable answer.) So why am I disappointed in Winn-Dixie? Winn-Dixie will not process a refund, even though the cards haven't been activated. They sell these things - I'm sure they've heard complaints before, or they would help process a refund. They clearly know NetSpend is shady, and are complicit in allowing it to continue. Winn-Dixie should be more aware of who they're doing business with. NetSpend has had an FTC action against it in 2017 that led to millions in refunds to consumers. They're still up to the same nonsense. It's fine if this is a useful product for some people, but they should not be able to take my money and keep it while I have no way to get it back. I could just pass these along to my nieces and nephews as gifts (although, if they already have one, it looks like they have no way to redeem it!), but the fees on these cards are ridiculous. I'm fine paying a few bucks for the privilege of buying a gift card the recipients can use anywhere, but buying a candy bar with it should not come with a $1.50 transaction fee every time. Visa is already making a killing on credit card transaction fees, and NetSpend already made their money on the cost of the card. I refuse to pass these along as "gift cards" to my nieces & nephews because these cards are clearly not a smart financial choice for anyone. These belong behind the counter with the cigarettes. Another option, as the Winn-Dixie store manager (Amy) suggested, is to try to sell them to someone else and get back as much of my money as I can. That would make me complicit in perpetuating the scam, and I won't be a part of it. I'm giving Winn-Dixie 1 star for selling this shady, predatory product, and then refusing to help with a refund. I did not agree to Winn-Dixie's no return policy or NetSpend's policies in the course of my purchase at the register.
