PLEASE DO NOT BRING YOUR DOG HERE. I brought my dog to Dogtopia San Marcos and got him back with serious breathing problems and what appeared to be ammonia exposure. He required veterinary care, and the bill has now exceeded $5,000. I am extremely concerned about their screening and health protocols, especially after learning that they do not appear to adequately screen dogs for medical conditions before allowing them into the facility. I have also seen other reviews from owners describing their dogs becoming sick after being at this location. This has been an extremely stressful and expensive experience. I am currently considering pursuing legal action and am documenting everything related to my dog's condition and veterinary treatment. I strongly recommend that other dog owners do their research and seriously consider the potential risks before bringing their pets here. read more

First of all It smells terrible in there! Heavy amonia smell as soon as you walk in. I took my dog ( newly adopted 2.5 year old pit bull mix) there for his first day. They left him in open puppy play all day- even though we told them he was a rescue and we weren't sure how he was going to react. He came home with kennel cough- 2 vet bills totaling $1600 to treat him & they charged me twice for the day. I DON'T RECOMMEND THIS PLACE read more

My dog has breathing issues due to a collapsed trachea and is harness only. I let them know multiple times and they still continued to swap his harness I bring into a collar and remove his harness. I was patient the first few times but after the third I decided to exclude my dog due to staff negligence and poor communication. They also denied to waive the cancellation fee. read more

My dog got extremely sick from this location. They clearly don't vet their dogs properly and allow sick dogs in causing a very large vet bill and my bulldog a lot of distress while still charging a daycare bill for the next month. It's not even worth using the credits as I can't risk him getting sick again. Highly disappointed in our dog boarding/ day care experience here. read more

Poor dogs barking after closing hours. Tons of empty kennels and I could hear a few dogs barking and uncomfortable. I didn't see anyone working there and keeping the dogs company. I hope the workers were somewhere near the dogs and I hope they comfort the crying ones soon. If you are considering leaving your dog overnight, please make sure to check the sleeping area and arrangements before you book boarding. Hopefully they have webcams so you can check on your dog overnight. read more

This was my first time trying them out. I have a rescue that I'm trying to socialize. The lobby smells so much of urine, i was kinda glad i didn't have all my documents so they couldn't do the evaluation today. Definitely not coming back. read more

It smells soooo badly in here! We took our puppy for an evaluation. In just 30 mins she smelt so badly. Even my husband smelled when he got back in the car. After reading the reviews about the smell I don't think we will be back. The people were very nice but it reeked of ammonia and pee. read more

What happened to Dogtopia San Marcos. We always boarded our dogs there since 2015 and it was excellent. The day care was excellent as well. We were without a dog for a few months and adopted recently. We boarded our dog for one night and upon pick up, I had to leave the lobby for the outdoors after 30 seconds. It reached of urine, ammonia and no one was at the front when we arrived. There were dogs barking horribly and when they brought our Beagle out he was cowering, shaking, crying, and smelled of urine. I had to leave the lobby after 15 seconds as it smelled so bad of urine, ammonia and there were 5 spray cans of different scents on the lobby desk. I had to throw out his dog bed as it smelled so bad. It took him almost 12 hours for him to calm down and he fell asleep in my arms and wouldn't leave me alone. As we unpacked his bag, we found he had not been given his night time supplements. No care what so ever. Do not go there. Such a bad place now. If the lobby smelled so awful, imagine what the back smelled like where the dogs stay. read more

I wouldn't recommend, this was our first time boarding with Dogtopia and will be the last. We booked for our dogs to be in a private suite together, knowing that is what our dogs are more comfortable with from previous boarding experiences. This was also confirmed at drop off. The following morning I had seen on the webcams that our dogs were indeed not in a suite but in separate cages. I continued to check the webcams throughout the day to my surprise 3/4 cameras were not connected. For a business that advertises having webcam access to see the dogs throughout their stay, I was highly disappointed and concerned for our dogs wellbeing over the holiday. read more

Do not recommend coming here. They messed up and overcharged me on their part and will not offer a refund. That's a terrible business. i paid for my dogs to get their nails trim, they did not do that. I paid for two baths and nail trimming and they charged me 205 dollars. After calling them on the phone they said they messed up on their part but will not offer a refund. They will only offer a free dog bath. That's unacceptable. Don't waste your money on this poorly ran business. read more

The. Absolute. STENCH ! Ugh. Came to bring our dogs here at the San Marcos location and just walking into the lobby is the worst assault on the senses ever. It is horrible, no good, verrry bad and vomit inducing. Makes me question if the lobby stinks so badly, what the rest of the facility is like? ??? 5 of 10 Dogs must be coming back home with worms. The most unsanitary and revolting smell emanates and clings to your clothes after you leave - Dogtopia for the love of Dog, please please PLEASE clean and mop your lobby area. Bleach, Simple Green, whatever... then we will come back with our dogs. I am amazed that the employees can stand to sit there all day in it?! Perhaps they hire former sanitation or sewer workers?? read more

My dog had a spa appointment at noon. Because he has anxiety with his front paws being touched, he requires sedation 2 hours before any appointments. We brought him in and was told he's be done by 2:30pm. My son attempted to pick him up multiple times and they said he wasn't ready. He eventually was picked up at 4:30..... DAMP.... And his nails NOT TRIMMED. They charged $100 for the service and didn't even tell us they were unable to trim his nails. When we brought it to their attention, they said our dog wouldn't let them trim his nails..... They could have called us WAAAYYY earlier to let us know that- instead we pick him up and they failed to let us know. His nails remained untrimmed but they comped us a free bath....... Not likely to take my fur baby back to this spa. read more

So first let me say my puppy is my baby, hes my first ever 'my own dog'. Hes crazy but what 7 month old puppy isn't. My last convo with Julie was my pup humped well why didn't anyone say anything and 2. His new daycare says he doesn't. SO? So instead of taking my dogs photos down like Jeff Smith has asked, photos are still up. And mine and my pups instragrams are blocked. Weird. Immature yes. Now Dogtopia "Julie" is having staff and fake account made to cover up things and see how great Dogtopia is. See pictures below. Let me be 100% honest. I liked the staff at Dogtopia I liked Hope and I like their trainer. I also think staff has alot to learn. And to handle hyper dogs and behavior and im not the only one who thinks that. I also saw at pickup time was the handlers on the phones in the corner of the room out of cameras view how I know this is I saw at pickup time through the glass when I was waiting for my pup, and only having 1 person in the front at pick up time, both not okay but Who I don't like is Julie. Who to this day hasn't removed MY dog's photos nor even apologized for things to get bad and me contacting corporate. You can see Jeff email saying he thinks photos have been deleted and then there was a new post on their yelp from a LB. First no photo, second there whole page was created today 5 hours ago? weird. Instead just apologize and take my pets photos down before Jeff really makes you. Thanks:) Katelyn read more

We adopted a rescue dog this year. She is reactive to other dogs and I am a new dog owner. So, when we adopted the dog I was not educated enough to make right decision to benefit my dog and help her with her anxiety towards other dogs. At that time I was not sure if she was fearful or aggressive. So, based on the advertising of Dogtopia to help socialize dogs I thought it was a good idea to bring my dog in to do an assessment on her before enrolling her on their dogcare. I thought that their assessment will help me to learn more about my dog because she was very reactive to other dogs. She passed the assessment and I was beyond than happy. I didn't expect that my dog would pass the assessment. So I enrolled her and tried our first free week of dog daycare.. After first time being there for couple of hours, she was stressed but ok. She acted weird though for couple of days after being there. I thought it was just stress and she might get better each day when she goes there. When I brought her in next time things changed. I left her there for more than a half day. I was able to see her on camera and saw her walking there calmly around dogs. I could not beleive it was my dog not reacting to other dogs. However, they shut off the cameras during nap and I didn't have any visibility how they release my dog to the room with the other dogs. When I picked her up and brought her home everything got changed.. when I came back home with her and tried to pick her up to wash her paws she showed signs of pain and distress. I could not figure out what had happened. She went straight to her bed... And she would not come when called. She laid there breathing hardly and refused to eat. I was not able to touch her body. If I tried to pet her she would show signs of pain whining. I was in shock and didn't know what to do. So I called them to see maybe something had happened there. Their response killed me. They said she was a quiet dog and kept everything to herself! I was surprised... Was she supposed to explain them how she felt.....? Was she supposed to talk?? She laid in her bed that evening. I really wanted to rush to an emergency but decided to wait until morning time. In the morning, she got better. I will never even use that place again. read more

Not my first bad experience with this location in particular but this past one was just too much. My dog stayed for two nights and came back smelling like the inside of a public restroom. I'm talking I couldn't hug him bc it would linger on me when I went to kiss his face, it was obvious another dog had peed on him.. the thing is. I asked him to be washed before pick up because obviously dogs get dirty while Playing. We pick up, they say they washed him...he had bad diarrhea stuck to his fur near his butt and all along his tale. But he was washed?? And to let a dog go like that for days is cruel. I called in today to confirm I wasn't charged for a wash, the girl on the phone tells me oh we washed him then let him play. Why would I want my dog washed before he gets dirty from playing for two full days and not washed before he comes home? Then she changed her tone and tells me he wasn't washed even though they have him down for one. No explanation. Just yes we had him down for the wash but we didn't do it and we didn't charge you. I'm sorry what?? How does that make sense? He has other dogs fluids in him and his own caked into his white fur and we obviously wanted him cleaned before pick up if that's what you had us down for and you just didn't do it because?? Tired of how disappointed I am slowly becoming in this place. I'm willing to drive my dog the hour trip away to Fon Jon then bring my furry baby back here. read more

We took our dog Blow to Dogtopia as we prepared to move out of state. They were very accommodating with our last minute booking. The location is clean and modern, and the service was outstanding - far above what I would typically expect at the price point. We loved being able to check in on our doggo periodically via the webcams on their convenient app. We picked him up with a fresh groom which was a much needed service before our road trip! Their report card with photos and a description of his time there as well as tips for care post-boarding was a great departing touch. We're sad to be moving too far out of the area. Otherwise, we would definitely be coming back! read more

I have been trying to figure out what to write about my experience at Dogtopia. I and my family are new to San Marcos, and we are looking for a place to board our most precious and beloved dog, Jessie. I have boarded her many times previously with great success. So I call Dogtopia in the hopes that they were the place that would do so as well. As you can see by my lack of 5 stars that it is not the case. My dog is a rescue. She is very timid, and needs time to warm up to a new boarding facility-all of which I explained to the girl I talked to on the phone. She assured me not to worry, they'd give my Jessie all the time she needed. So to pre-empt the rest of the story: Jessie goes to the Montiel Dog Park twice per week and is very Dog/people friendly. It takes her a good half-hour to warm up, but once she does, She is a total social butterfly! I bring her in at 10:00am Monday morning and the girl at the front takes her and says that I need to sit in the lobby while she carries out the "evaluation" of my dog's ELIGIBILITY to qualify for boarding at Dogtopia. She takes my most beloved Jessie in the back-without anyone to comfort her-for all of five minutes. I am anal-retentive, I took out my smartphone and timed it: The so-called "dog expert" removed my dog from me at 10:02am and returned her at 10:07:45. She comes out and says, " Well I got her into a crate, but them I tried to introduce her to a couple of dogs in our daycare, and she showed signs of fear, and I can't pass her for eligibility for boarding." WELL NO SHIT SHERLOCK!!! You take my timid dog away from me, shove her into a crate, and then shove two strange dogs she doesn't know into her face! How about take ten to fifteen minutes to get my dog used to you. Then make her crate experience pleasant (because Jessie is indeed crate-trained), them EASE her into dog to dog interaction. Are you dog experts or not? Because it looks to me like you ARE NOT!!! So I Will be taking my dog, my business, and my money elsewhere! If I could give them a -5 stars I would! UPDATE: Someone from Dogtopia left a comment (below) with no real helpful solutions to their obvious systems and personal training flaws. Way to represent, there, Skippy-John-Jones!!! read more

Super friendly staff who truly seem to enjoy being around the dogs. Love that we can watch our pup on the cams during the day. Does anyone know the refund policy? I moved to the area a couple of months back and was encouraged to buy a big daycare package. My dog went once and did not enjoy it. He was vomiting for two days and was so visibly shaken for close to a week. He's a senior dog and I think it was just too high energy for him. I regret buying the package because I don't want to bring him back there. We had to take him to the vet just to make sure it wasn't disease related. He did so well at a another pet hotel. I didn't think it would so different. Don't mess up like me read more

Our dog loves it here for both daycare and boarding. Friendly and attentive staff. Highly recommend

Brought our Sophie here for a grooming (bath), nail cleaning, ear cleaning, and tooth brushing. Pro: They were done with her in 2 hours and the price was reasonable. The person I spoke to over the phone was pleasant. Cons: While they did a good job, I would've like to have seen some more puppy love toward her when I dropped her off and picked her up. She was quickly whisked away when I dropped her off. When she was done she ran out, I paid, and we left. I dunno..maybe I'm just used to other pet places showing her more puppy love. read more

I will not take my dog to Dogtopia in San Marcos ever again. Their WebCams never work and they always make excuses and say you can call anytime. I called during the middle of my dog's 3-day stay and was on hold for 8 minutes. Well, they need to get their WebCams fixed. And the last time I dropped off my dog the lobby/place smelled rancid and disgusting. It was actually hard to breathe, because the smell was so bad. When I picked up my dog three days later, it still stunk as bad. It was gross and unacceptable. I do not recommend this location and/or Dogtopia for that matter. read more

I highly recommend Dogtopia for your furry friend. Customer service is a must in my book and they nailed it. The staff is loving, caring and knowledgable. My dog is so happy to be there. Now I can rest easy and know she is in good hands. Thank you Dogtopia. read more

Do not bring your dog here! They are not considerate of the dogs. We brought our dog in on the 3rd of July after having reserved a spot weeks before. Even though they were at capacity, they had all big dogs (about 30) in one room because they were, as one employee shared. "under-staffed". Are you kidding me?!? 30 full size dogs in one room and trying to introduce a new dog? It was a nightmare. To top it off, they don't have anyone with the dogs at night or even to check in on them. We left and went down the street to an AMAZING place called Dogs Abound. You should definitely call them instead! read more

I took my dog Ainsley to Dogtopia in San Marcos for a trial evaluation yesterday. My dog is only 20 months and this was the first time she had been left for daycare and/or boarding. She was warmly met by Izzy, a worker, Ainsley wanted to go with her and (not even a goodbye)she was anxious to meet the other dogs. This facility is super clean and has large outside canopy covered areas separated for small and large dogs to play at various times during the day. They even had 2 inflatable pools for the dogs to splash around in. Ainsley passed her evaluation successfully. She felt at ease with the loving staff. the facility and the dogs there for the day or longer stays. Dogtopia was a perfect solution to where I will leave my dog, with confidence, for an overnight next week. read more

I started taking my now 8 month old blue heeler to Dogtopia 3 months ago. He was first brought in for a temperate test on a Monday and passed with flying colors. Flash went to Dogtopia 5 days a week for 3 months. I've spent thousands of dollars with Dogtopia. Yesterday out of nowhere I get a call from a frantic employee that tells me my dog was jumping and nipping at a employee. The employee that called me said my dog was nipping at the attendant and didn't bite the attendant but pulled at their shirt. They said my dog is not welcome here anymore. So after 3 months out of nowhere my 8 month old puppy is a violent dog. When I came to pick up my dog the front desk girl said that she told me multiple times my dog was to much. Which is funny because they never went over with me how my dogs day's were. They simply tossed me a packet said read this and that will be 40 dollars a day. I would like to update my review. I did file a complaint against Dogtopia headquarters in Arizona referencing this location through BBB. Hi all I have looked at several dog day care and boarding places. By far this place is the very best! How do I know because my dog Hannah loves going there and based on the videos I see at anytime I want she has a great time. That is the first test passed with 5 stars. Second and most important to me is the staff. I have met most of the staff and they are nothing but professional friendly caring group of people. They take care of Hannah as if she was there owe. Again 5 stars pass. I thank them for that each time I pick her up! Last, they are based on dog play most of the time and nap time for an hour or so versus a majority of the time in crates and very little play time! Hannah sleeps like a baby when she gets home! Again 5 stars pass!!! Dogtopia team thank you for caring for Hannah like we do The Parlin's read more

My dog is dead because of their negligence. In March 2011 an employee of Dogtopia of San Marcos left the front door open. My two dogs plus another dog that I know of walked right out the front door. The others came back, but one of my dogs was hit and killed by a car. During litigation the owner told me that the employee was fired and other precautions would be put in place to ensure no other dogs would escape. This afternoon, however, as I was driving on San Marcos Blvd, I saw the front doors were propped open. I hoped they had learned their lesson. Unfortunately it seems they didn't. I wish this gave the option of granting zero stars because I honestly don't feel this company even deserves one star. Please be careful of this place. read more

Had a previous issue with Dogtopia San Marcos, and figured I would give them a second chance because I love what Dogtopia has to offer us dog owners who are pretty obsessed with our fur babies.
