I came by for a board game day with some folks and had a great time. They have a seriously huge selection for board games - I saw some classics but most of the games were newer types (tbf I haven't played board games in a looong time. Long enough to not even know board games now had expansion packs...). It is both a cute date spot but also a great place to hang with a larger crowd. Upon entry, we got seated quickly and went off to choose a game. Staff went around the place every so often to clean up tables and check the people. The only thing I wish they did was maybe crowd control a bit. Most of the groups were fine but there was one group that was just screaming on top of their lungs about half the time we were there which made it hard to concentrate and enjoy the game. But all in all, definitely would come back and try out some other board games. read more

We came in on a Sunday afternoon. There was some street parking though most spots were occupied but we lucked out and got parking as someone was coming out. The store was not super crowded when we arrived, maybe just one other group playing and a few customers. The entrance area is a small store area with select games on sale. You go through the store and there are 4 gaming rooms in the back. The first is darker, like a tavern with wooden floors and lower ceiling. Then it opens up to the library with a taller ceiling (because there is a second floor balcony but it's for employees). On the side is a D&D/rpg room that looks really cool. And then in the back is another gaming area where some tables can be reserved. I love that the library isn't cluttered and games are arranged alphabetically and even the shelves are labeled. It's so you can easily spot games and not be overwhelmed. They have the archive - a QR code is available - which is the bulk of this private library of which you can request games. And like any proper library, there is a cart where you can return used games to so someone can check it to make sure the game is complete. Each game even has a little map on the box indicating the shelf it belongs to - so cute! I like that there are different seating arrangements - a fancy game table, smaller intimate game tables, a couch and coffee table, and a large table for bigger groups. There are no food or snacks, but someone from the store brought in a box of coffee and there is a water dispenser with plastic cups. I wish there were some napkins available and maybe a hand sanitizer or something - we brought scones in and I had to wait for the bathroom to get some tissue for my hands. There is one bathroom and it was pretty clean. I didn't notice the pull down toilet seat cover - so maybe it was more designed for men? This may have been there but providing feminine products for free would be helpful and thoughtful - period equity. I would be impressed. Also, with the winter months and people going indoors, covid or not, respiratory disease is still a thing. Maybe it's there or not, but air filters would be something I would look for - keep employees and customers healthy. The board game selection is pretty good - you can check their website for an updated list. The collection includes Monopoly and Fluxx, but also Ark Nova and A Feast For Odin. They also have shelves with recommendations by staff members which is reminiscent of book stores. I liked that one of the shelves has commonly used accessories like trays for cubes/pieces, glass weights, white board markers, timers, basically anything you would want. I don't know if there was a set of fancy poker chips or general game mats; I'll have to look next time. I did see a small nook with game mats but I assumed they were for specific games. I also like that they have membership and non-membership options. They have board game events for beginners and also for more competitive players so the store is really working to reach out all levels of board gaming. I did not see Magic or Lorcana cards on display like I often see, but maybe I missed them. I did not notice any war games or miniatures brands. The staff seemed to be friendly and on top of things. The other customers were pleasant. There was a wide range of games played - one group played monopoly and another was playing whatever comes with a big roll out map. This location is a prime example of how a board game store should be. The store was clean, not cluttered, the location is decorated artfully - wherever you are there is something interesting to look at, staff and customers are pleasant, bathrooms are clean, the library has a wide variety of games - new, old, or even fancy deluxe versions that may be unaffordable to the average person. It's a great place to come and play board games with your friends. They have a wide selection of games to use if you are playing at one of the tables in the store. The ones I've played were in good condition and had all the pieces. They also host TTRPG events (or you can host your own here). If you come regularly theres a membership scheme where you can play for free for 2hrs a day, with a guest pass for a friend 2 times a month. They also do food. I went here to get Penny sleeves. They only had dragon shield, and when I asked if they fit sports cards I was told yes. I went here after a baseball game and actively collect baseball cards so I made sure to specify. The lady working the front desk was not very helpful. I went back to return the penny sleeves as they do not fit standard baseball cards and was told they could not and would not accept a return. They are over $10 (very expensive for penny sleeves) when I said, I asked if they could fit sports cards I was defiantly told I did not ask them that. I would not recommend going here for any sports card related products, or knowledgeable customer service. read more

SF is in dire need of more board game cafes. Dogpatch Games is a wonderful addition and now one of my go tos with my friends! There's a great selection of games here for varying party sizes and tons of space both indoors and outdoors, although it sometimes gets a little chilly in the room with the open door but you can just ask them to turn on the indoor heaters, which helps. Everything is alphabetically ordered, making it easy if you're coming in with a specific game in mind - our go tos include Pandemic and Wits & Wagers. Appreciate that they offer free water as well. Staff here are very warm, knowledgeable with recs, and best of all, happy to help get you going if you venture into new board game territory - kudos to the man (unfortunately don't think I caught his name) who introduced my group to the *Danish* trivia game Bezzerwizzer (think trivia night but with sabotage) after hearing how much we enjoyed Wits & Wagers. He voluntarily took the time to teach us how to play and served as our emcee while walking us through a full first round. It's now one of our favs! They seem to have a lively calendar of both community/member and private events - on various occasions we've popped in, I've seen a private girl's night session with someone teaching various board games and some sort of tournament. Would definitely check these out if I lived nearby. Good number of brunch/dinner/boba spots nearby too, and it's awesome that they let you bring in outside food/drinks! There was a stream of Twilight Imperium tournament projected on one wall. There were also a shelf of opened games to play there but because of COVID-19 the store closed that portion of the space. Can't wait for this to reopen! Such a great spot for a chill board game day with a group of friends! It's $7 to rent a table for the first two hours. The space is huge, clean, and has multiple bathrooms too. We had a group of 7 friends and we played for 4 hours straight! They have a massive library of games for all types of interests and skill levels. They had a lot of experience and were able to give really in depth descriptions of games and estimate the play times really well. We rented a table for 4 which was a great experience! The staff are always attentive and ready to answer any of your questions. I can tell they are board game enthusiasts that want to share their love of board and card games with others who drop by. This is a wonderful place to spend time with friends or family; they have a plethora of board games to choose from and try playing. The staff are very helpful and will take the time to explain the rules in a way that will get one excited to play the game, especially for the longer, more complicated board games. In addition to all the games on display, there's an entire backroom with a ton of options to choose from. Everything was clearly labeled with how many players needed to play, play-style, level of difficulty, etc. When we needed help looking for games, the staff was very attentive and asked questions on our preferences before making a couple of suggestions that would give us different experiences. I love coming to Dogpatch Games to buy and play games. They're not just a board game store, they're also great at fostering a community through their events and meetups. I even started getting into painting minis after taking their 101 class. It costs $7 for 2 hours of play per person, which isn't bad given they have an amazing game library, lots of space both inside and outside, and great staff that give solid game recommendations. The only thing that would really make it better is for them to have food and drink, but there's a good boba place across the street and we're allowed to order/bring food to have while we play. Overall, great game store in a great neighborhood! I try to make time to come here even though I live nearly an hour away. read more

Wow! What a gem! The Dogpatch neighborhood is already fantastic, and this place just makes it even more of a neighborhood worth visiting. I was in on a busy Saturday afternoon. The game playing space was packed with all sorts of folks at different tables, but there was still room for others to join. The retail space is full of great games and even tho they were full and busy, I was greeted immediately when I came in and was offered any type of help I could need. Very informed and patient staff/ownership! Aaaand after I purchased my items, they offered to show me how to play the game, immediately right there if I had the time. We casually stopped by here after grabbing lunch at Marcella's - it's a real gem and a great addition to the neighborhood. My girlfriend and I have casually played some board games in the past, and the gentleman working here (didn't catch his name) was just fantastic. He asked us about what games we've played in the past, what we do / don't like about them etc, and then walked us through a bunch of recommendations based on that. He spent probably 20 minutes showing us a few different games, even playing a round or two so that we got the gist before we found one we liked an bought it. They also rent out tables in their (really nice) parklet, so that you can try out lots of different games without needing to buy. He said they're even thinking about doing a partnership with Marcella's next door, for food / drink while you play. I just visited Dogpatch Games and came away thoroughly impressed. I let Kevin(owner) know that I was looking for a game that my wife and son could play together as a team because we've become a bit too competitive playing games and spending way more time together during this past year. Kevin steered me to cooperative games and his passion and energy in describing the various games was contagious! After deciding on an entry level cooperative game "Forbidden Desert", I left his store looking forward to bringing my family back here to explore more games. They have a game table inside and multiple tables set up outside in their parklet.
