My husband and I just recently adopted a puppy from Doc Williams. The woman who spoke to us told us she had no illnesses, was doing great (other than not being potty trained), and that there were no other problems. Turns out, our puppy has fleas, parasites, upper respiratory infection, and pneumonia (although it may very well be distemper.) We've spent nearly $1,000 in the first two days of having her. We adopted our first puppy from Charleston Animal Society, who not only was completely honest with us, but also provided us with a month of insurance, a free check-up and several other perks. Honestly, I'm glad we got her, so that we could give her a good home to hopefully recover at, or, in the worst case scenario, a place with lots of love to spend her last days at. The dishonesty at Doc Williams is atrocious. Shame on this SPCA. read more

Let me start off by saying that I am aware of the monetary stresses that many of these shelters face. However, this animal shelter should be ashamed of themselves. We adopted our sweet girl a week ago and she is incredibly sick. She is currently undergoing treatment for an upper respiratory infection. The vet also found that her ears were very dirty and they pulled out a piece of plastic from them! When we adopted her, there was no mention that she had just had her spay surgery either. The stress of the adoption, stress of her recovery from surgery (we adopted her 2 days after her surgery), unsanitary conditions at the shelter, and just not feeling well, has made her absolutely miserable. We know that shelters do the best they can, but to not provide simple care, such as cleaning animals' ears, is appalling. Not only that, I received no response when trying to find out what kind of food was being fed at the shelter. The staff at this shelter do not care. They only want to get rid of animals as fast as possible. My vet said that they do not partner with the SPCA and if you want to find a reputable and outstanding shelter to adopt from, do so from the Charleston Animal Society. read more

I am absolutely disgusted by this shelter. This is no condition to keep animals in. I've always heard bad things about Doc Williams since they had their old location, but never thought they were this unprofessional. This location is very small. There are what appears to be less than ten outdoor cages. Most dogs were kept in crates, standing on wire and their own feces directly under the sun. I can't imagine what the summer is going to be like for these dogs. Maybe by then they will have kennels, but then again it's already been about two months since this location was opened and it's still very unfit to be a dog shelter. There's several empty rooms inside the shelter, and to get to the dogs you have to walk through their orientation room which is larger than the indoor dog room. There are less than twenty indoor cages for the large dogs. There were two or three dogs in each cage. For the entire time I was visiting the inside dogs, there were two next to each other continuously trying to attack one another. While there was no possible way they could get to each other, this went on for several minutes and was stressing the dogs in each cage out. A simple solution? Switch the dogs to a farther away kennel. The dogs kept outside are the ones I'm most concerned about. Almost every crated dog was standing in their own feces or water that was knocked over. One employee even made a comment as I was visiting a dog standing in water about how she needed to get him cleaned up. She never did, and instead stood around watching most the time. Some dogs didn't have water. There were dogs in crates that were too small, and they couldn't stand up. On the contrary, I saw a few small dogs in large crates too. Simply switching these dogs around would solve that problem. Even still, there were not enough large crates for the large dogs. Most of the crates didn't have plastic bottoms, and the dogs were standing on the metal bars. The staff didn't seem to care. They were not understaffed, as a matter of fact about four or five different people approached me during the time I was here. They stood right next to the dogs standing in their own feces. Nobody made any efforts to clean up. I work in pet services, and know it's not a fun job picking up poop, but regardless it's their job and these animals are already suffering in crates too small for them, they don't need to be constantly standing in poop. The entire shelter is very poorly run. One staff member (possibly a volunteer, she was wearing her own clothes and not a tshirt with the logo) was smoking cigarettes outside with the dogs. Several of them were standing around, playing on phones, etc. when they could've been cleaning up after the dogs. read more

After we moved to Hawai'i, we got a call that my in-law's cat had been picked up, they knew he was ours, because we had him chipped. He was an outside cat and was staying with my in-law's neighbor, until the 120 day quarantine was over. The neighbor went to go pick him up, after the long holiday break they had and weren't open, they had put him down. Didn't apologize for their mistake. Pathetic read more

I am so very dissatisfied with the people and the service of the Doc Williams SPCA. I adopted a 2 month old puppy and was told she received her first round of shots and the rest would be covered, and that she had been vaccinated for Parvovirus. Three days and almost $300 later, she has an upper respiratory infection, coccidia parasite, and parvovirus. The staff is unfriendly and seem like they couldn't care less about our sweet girls health. I feel very lied to and when asked if they could treat the parvo the response was "We will try." They then put her in a cage with 6 other puppies when i was told she would be isolated from every dog and person. I love the idea of what they are trying to do, but blatantly lying to people is going about it the wrong way. I personally will never return to this SCPA and wouldn't recommend going. read more

This place is horrid. The dogs are kept in horrible conditions. In one room, they have large dogs 2 to a metal cage. In the next room, they have medium sized dogs in cages that are way too small. This is animal abuse! The way the dogs act, it's like they almost never see the outside of that cage! It's horrible and absolutely heartbreaking and the staff act like they don't care. Most of these dogs here have kennel cough. Either things need to be fixed or this place needs to be shut down immediately. read more

If I could give 0 star rating I would! I'm saddened by the conditions these poor animals are in. My girlfriend and I went to the NEW facility today in Moncks Corner thinking since they moved and got a new building it would be great...WRONG! The dogs are all in small kennels laying in their own urine and feces. They have no beds and NO AIR CONDITIONING! All the dogs were panting and breathing extremely hard. They do not look like they are ever taken out of their crates to be walked or played with. My heart hurts for them and I wish I could rescue them all! Not to mention the two very young pups in the front looked like pregnant cows! When I said something. They said "the volunteers over fed them." That's a LIE! Its very obvious that these pups had worms or parasites along with a good majority of the dogs. Most of their dogs have obvious health issues and I don't believe they are being treated. A good majority of them also are so thin you can see their ribs. This is SAD!!! The dogs have no bio about them, and seem very depressed... I can't express enough how much I wish someone would take these animals AWAY and LOCK THIS PLACE DOWN! I honestly think these dogs would have a better chance at life as strays on the street then being locked in this horrible dog prison. And the staff... My God don't get me started! Trashy... Thats all ill say about that. This is unacceptable treatment and should be considered animal cruelty. :( read more

SInce my review from Tuesday was removed...I am writing again. On Sunday, March 15 we were excite to visit DOC WILLIAMS SPCA on Cypress Gardens Rd, seeking to adopt. As we entered the main room that housed the small dogs and cats the stench of feces & urine took our breathe; empty water bowls, standing room only wire cages, wet newspaper as beds in cages, and the apathetic staff left us grief-stricken over the horrible conditions. Donations and volunteers are definately needed, but the Directors of Doc Williams SPCA must be held accountable for the neglect of basic care for the animals with NO excuses accepted read more

These sweet babies have no bio's about them on the site! People want to know somewhat of a history about a dog or their mannerisms. If you spend enough time with the animals like you should, you should be able to write a little something about them. That will help the adoption process much more! read more

They were very helpful. My mom and I adopted 2 kittens! The next day I called because they started sneezing and one was worse then the other so brought them back to see the vet and they were both put on medicine. It's about a week later the one kitten got sick again. One of the receptionist were very helpful and the vet was very nice and appreciated they got us in without having to pay a vet fee. read more

Stench of feces & urine, empty water bowls, standing room only wire cages with wet newspaper to lie on, and dogs bark pitifully for attention. This was what we witnessed during our visit to DOC WILLIAMS SPCA on Cypress Gardens Rd, Sunday March 15, 2015. We were repulsed with the level of indifference by the staff who offered no apologies or explanations and we left grief-stricken over the abominable conditions. Donations are definitely needed at Doc Williams SPCA but there should be concerns about the utilization of the funds and especially the quality of care being given at the shelter. We adopted our dog over the summer and we knew when we adopted him that he had heart worms, so fine. What we didn't realize is that our dog was not at all socialized, which they neglected to mention. We got a chihuahua, and a simple google search showed that our chi, like a lot of others, only likes other chis. When we adopted him, he was in a cage with a bunch of other Chihuahuas and we were told it was because they were all heart worm positive, which actually has nothing to do with anything(look it up) so really, he was being kept with them to keep him from freaking out and being intimidated by other dogs. Not that we don't like our dog, but they really need to better disclose what a dogs temperament is like, so we would know from day 1 this dog can't be with other dogs, strangers, children, etc. Besides that, when we took our dog to the vet after adopting him, they were appalled at the state he was in between the heart worm the shelter wasn't treating, ribs showing, and his vaccination record, which was a little spotty. We won't be getting another dog there, but we're glad we saved our baby, he may not have made it much longer there! read more

My husband and I adopted a Min Pin dog from Doc Williams SPCA for one of our twin sons. We were told when we went to look at him that he was current on all his shots, heartworm negative and had been fixed and microchipped. The worker also let us know that he had a broken leg after it being found on X-ray, so they fixed that while he was there. My husband had noticed a scar on his chest and the worker said she thought it was a spider bite, brown recluse most likely. We were also told he was 6 years old. They gave us all the paperwork on him and a disc with his X-rays. Took him to the vet a couple days after we got him because he seemed to have an upper respiratory infection. Come to find out the dog had an enlarged heart, enlarged liver, a 90 degree bend in his trachea. None of this was ever disclosed to us. Fast forward to 8 months later, he became sick again. He was diagnosed with diabetes on top of everything else. After about $3,000 later, we had to our poor baby down. He had went into heart failure. My husband and I won't be getting another dog from there or recommend this place to anyone. This was the second dog we had to put down from there. Just don't understand how they can be allowed to operate knowing that they are dishonest to people. It is heartbreaking to get attached to an animal and have to let go. read more
