There was no better way to heal our broken hearts after the passing of our darling yorkie, Wolfie…read morein July, 2014, then open our home and adopt a rescue dog who needed us as much as we needed him or her. I scoured the internet for weeks and signed up for pet search engines, adoptapet.com and Petfinder.com. On October 30, 2014, a male yorkie mix posted on petfinder.com. He called out to me. His name was Teddy and he was available through LowCountry Animal Rescue in Summerville. I completed the extensive on-line application. They checked our veterinary reference and made a home visit. As rescue groups look to make the best match, we were thrilled when we received that approval phone call the next day. You see, while we do have a fenced in yard and retired, sometimes, the match is to a household with multiple dogs, or children ... both, of which we had neither. We went to a 'meet and greet' at the PetSmart on Rivers Avenue, the next day. Would Teddy like us? Would hub like Teddy? It was love at first sight and we loved him every minute he shared our lives until he passed almost 7 years later. We had huge holes in our hearts but knew the time was right to fill the void with another precious soul who needed a fresh start. Back to the search engines. The first email in my inbox on New's Year's Day was from adoptapet.com. I couldn't believe my eyes when Clarence's face popped up on my screen, up for adoption through LowCountry Animal Rescue. I had submitted an updated application a month earlier and was approved. As such, I sent them a message with lots of questions to which they responded right away. I asked for Clarence to come to the Adoption Event at Petco, Summerville, scheduled for that afternoon. Clarence was beautiful ... a yorkie-schnauzer mix (Snorkie). Joe and he started bonding right away. He was just who we needed ... and this 6 year old needed us, too. In no time, we were a family of 3, again, on our way home. LowCountry Animal Rescue is a small group of volunteers who foster in their homes. Their fosters come from shelters and owner surrenders. They are responsive and take care of the dogs, cats and any other furry kids that are in their care. Adoptions are on weekends at pre-publicized Adoption events around the greater Charleston area. An approved application must be on file. The animals come up-to-date on shots, Heartworm tested and neutered or spayed. Both Teddy and Clarence were crate trained and house trained. He does have some separation anxiety but my other dogs do also, and this is a common trait with the breed. He was up to date on vacs and his medical info from all his vets was provided. He appeared well taken care of. I would adopt from this rescue again.

It's our first time adopting a pet from them and everyone was very helpful and professional. The process was easy and thorough. We now have two orange tabby kittens! $125 each and they have all their shots, microchipped, health records and neutered. If they have any health issues within 10 days of adoption, we can bring them back for a free check-up with the vet on staff.

My heart goes out to every Animal in there to get treated with kindness and compassion. They need to realize that Dogs do nibble at you for affection. I heard they were putting down some very good Dogs that could have been saved if they had the right people out there that knew what they were doing. I hope that they have gotten some new employees out there that knows about animals behavior. I grew up taking strays in from people that dumped them off. Actually my Whole family does this. I just had to put down my 21 year old dog that was just a stray. I feel like I have lost a child. I took her bedding and unused food, items and took to PAWS in Summerville, SC. People have your Animals Spayed and Neutered to help with these little Animals from being put to death. They don't deserve to be born to die.

They said we could get any kitten out to meet them just don't put them on the floor. We made 2 laps looking at everyone. So many sweet babies to pick from and we were looking for particular personalities. Once we picked two the staff checked the medical records to make sure they were currently due for anything before we left. Because it's currently kitten season and they have a ton of kittens, all kittens were half off. So we got two for $175. Already fixed, vaccinated, and microchipped. The facility was very clean, easy to find, and professionally ran. It was a great experience. As we left there was a family with kids that came to read books to the kittens, so sweet!

I have adopted a few dogs from Dorchester Paws over the years. They do the best they can with what…read morethey have. I know they are working to get into a new space, which I think will be extremely helpful. The staff is stretched thin and being a shelter, there is only so much they can do to accommodate every pup/cat that comes in. It seems like the staff truly cares about the animals and have been friendly. They charge different fees for different ages, often run lower rates when they are getting more crowded, etc. You can also get a pup for the day, just to get them out of the shelter for a few hours. They are trying to help the community as best they can, but we need to continue to help support them as much as we can.

My husband and I just recently adopted a puppy from Doc Williams. The woman who spoke to us told us…read moreshe had no illnesses, was doing great (other than not being potty trained), and that there were no other problems. Turns out, our puppy has fleas, parasites, upper respiratory infection, and pneumonia (although it may very well be distemper.) We've spent nearly $1,000 in the first two days of having her. We adopted our first puppy from Charleston Animal Society, who not only was completely honest with us, but also provided us with a month of insurance, a free check-up and several other perks. Honestly, I'm glad we got her, so that we could give her a good home to hopefully recover at, or, in the worst case scenario, a place with lots of love to spend her last days at. The dishonesty at Doc Williams is atrocious. Shame on this SPCA.

Not only did they send ALL of her food back with her, she came home with cuts and sores all over her skin, a chemical burn on her stomach, and had lost 17 lbs in the 10 days she was there. They claimed to me that the food container, which was premeasured for the duration of her stay, was "too heavy to carry" and that they fed her in house food. We took her to another veterinarian office to have her evaluated because she was so traumatized and unwell.The vet was not even able to gather a fecal sample because they starved her while she was in their "care". Do NOT send your pet here. They are abusive and should be ashamed. Animal control should shut this place down. They lied to me and told me multiple different stories, and then lied and told another different story to the animal control officer. They don't refund the boarding fee after they clearly neglected to provide the service they promised. In addition, we had to pay almost $600 for veterinary treatment for the injuries our puppy sustained in their "care". I will tell every person I know how horrific they were to our sweet puppy.
