We had a great time here! While we could not find a seat at the bar for dinner, which was the place to see and be seen, we had a good dinner in the restaurant; we split the Relleno Platter which was more than enough food; the Margarita was excellent after we added a shot of El Patron. As we walked out, we snagged a table on the patio for desert and wine and listened to the live music playing in the bar area..fun, fun, fun read more

Good food. Terrible service. Took forever to be seated and even longer to get our check. Ended up walking the check up to the bar myself to pay even though the restaurant was not very busy. read more

Don't cross the street for this place, MEH is a perfect description of this eatery. The multi-star reviews must be based more on the alcohol than the food. The food is more Midwest than Southwest. The "hot" green chile was mild, I should have brought a jar of El Pinto to add some flavor. Too many New Mexican restaurants are dumbing-down their flavors to satisfy the tourist, this seems to be another one. I do have to say the dessert was Great but the waitress said that they get it from a third party baker.. read more

The Chile rellenos at brunch was to die for! Loved the pumpkin seeds. The rise was fresh and seasoned well. It's a slightly upscale feel, but where you can feel comfortable sitting down in casual clothes. I wore jeans, tennis shoes and a pullover shirt. The service was flawless. I felt my meal could have been a dollar, maybe two, less. But I felt my two friends got their breakfasts for a steal, so it evened out on our side. Cheers! read more

Doc Martin's deserves the awards they have received. The steaks were perfectly prepared, salads and desserts amazing, service impeccable. Waiter was professional, knowledgeable and friendly. We will definitely be going back to Doc Martin's whenever we are in the Taos area. As others have mentioned, service in the attached Adobe Bar is slow to non-existent, but the drinks were good if you can get 'em! read more

My mom is elderly and walks with a cane. She is physically challenged and cannot stand for long periods of time. I dropped her off while I parked in the back. When she walked into the lounge she told me the staff were busy chatting and no one approached her until she made a point of saying something. We had just been to the local brew pub and had a less than stellar experience, so this was not what I needed to hear. Needless to say, once she made herself heard, the hostess promptly led us into the back garden, which was pleasant enough outside of my being eaten alive by mosquitos. Not wanting chili or rattlesnake and rabbit sausage (the shock value of the dish did not add positively to the experience), I settled on the trout, my mom on the pork ribs. We also shared the goat cheese appetizer and the caesar salad, which were decent but uneventful. The trout was lightly breaded and bland, which served to sooth a stomach overwrought with heat and heartburn. But my potatoes were cold and rock hard, the vegetables on my plate over-salted and rubbery. As for my mom's BBQ pork ribs, the poor woman had to work overtime to scrape what scant, tough, overly-dry meat stuck to the slippery bones. The best part of the entire meal was the bread pudding on her plate: a sweet & spicy little stack of savory-flavored goodness. Walking out onto the front patio as we left, I jealously eye-balled the mounds of nachos, burgers and high-stacked sandwiches being served. If only I had known the front patio was the place to get your money's worth, I would have insisted we sit there instead. Seems the ones that got the best meal at our table that evening were the mosquitos that left me with welts all over my arms, hips and neck. read more

This appears to be very hyped up. The building is awesome and well kept. The Mexican food is bland. The service is great BUT they charge $8 for chips and salsa. It's not how we do it in Houston, like not even close on flavor but the service and building are great. read more

Not worth the money. Let me start by saying our waitress was very nice and did a great job, but the food was average at best and terribly overpriced. So disappointed. We started with drinks and 3 appetizers that were basically sports bar apps, but smaller and tasteless. Margs we're ok, but again small and basic bar margaritas. Definitely not worth the money. For the main, our group had Rib-eye specials and chili rellenos. One of the rib eyes was so fatty we sent it back. Others were like something you might get at Dennys, all fat and tasteless. I don't mind paying $48 for a steak but if I do, I want a $48 steak, not Dennys. Had to put A1 on it to get through it. Good steaks don't need A1. Ever. Chili rellenos were $30. Not worth it. In the end I hope they reevaluate their menu and pricing because it's a cool venue. read more

Stopped here for Saturday Brunch. I had the Blueberry Pancakes which were amazing and my boyfriend had the Breakfast Burrito. He loved his also and ate every last drop. Service was great and fast. Will definitely be back the next time we're in town. Took a Mocha to go and it was delish also. read more

Worst experience I have ever had in a restaurant. I left wondering if I was in Taos or Afghanistan. You see, evidently, the staff does not thing women should dine unaccomapnied. I made a reservation for one. When I got there I told the hostess I had a reservation. She found it immediately and then asked, "Will you be dining alone?" Yes. She showed me to my table, a nice one by the window, and when the waitress arrived with two menus, she asked, "Will anyone be joining you?" No. When a waiter arrived with my Queso Fundido, he brought two plates and set one at the empty chair. I told him I did not need another plate as I was dining alone. Then, I made the mistake of going to the bathroom. When I came back, my food was gone. I had eaten about a third. I got up and left. The waitress called after me, "I will comp your food." Thank you. How generous. read more

We had eaten here multiple times and had always had great service and great food so we decided to have Thanksgiving dinner at Doc Martins. It can only be described as a great disappointment. We were seated next to a table of 12 so our much anticipated romantic dinner was already in jeopardy, but we were able to learn what each of those 12 folks was thankful for. It was Thanksgiving so we cold get over sitting next to a large family - they were just trying to have a nice Thanksgiving meal, too. We started out with optimism, ordering the root vegetable salad and butternut squash soup for starters. The soup was pretty good - I guess we were lucky because apparently we got the last cup. The salad - well there was lettuce and beets. There was no sign of a vinaigrette or other dressing, no goat cheese crumbles, croutons or other things that make a salad good. Evidently the beets and lettuce had been tossed together much earlier in the day as the lettuce was covered in red beet juice and that is as close the salad got to being dressed. It was a mess. For our entree we chose the turkey and red chili glazed ham. Both were to be accompanied by brussel sprouts, garlic mashed potatoes and corn bread stuffing. It sounded like the perfect holiday meal. Not so much... Brussel sprouts had been replaced by broccolini, and no garlic had ever come near the potatoes. Mine were hot. My partner's were ice cold. Both turkey and stuffing were so dry as to almost be inedible despite the gravy and cranberry sauce that had been poured over top of everything. They did agree to heat up my partner's meal after which her ham was just as dry as my turkey. All in all it tasted like leftovers reheated the 3rd or 4th time. It looked even worse. This kitchen hd clearly never heard of plating - the plate looked like it had been assembled by a Chopped contestant who ran out of time. The server did not light the candle on our table despite us asking them to do it at the start, did not refill our water and never asked how things were. Given how the rest of the meal had gone we decided to forego dessert... read more

This used to be a great restaurant, but now it's not even a good restaurant. The food came out late, and two of us had our plates returned because everything on them was ice cold. Everything, meat, potatoes, vegetables. They came back dried out and burnt. Some of the pricing is ridiculous - $10 for a basket of bread? Service seem to me to be average to indifferent. We've been coming here for years for a group dinner during a convention in town. I'll never return. Overpriced and overrated. read more

Funky interior, yummy drinks, great service and tasty food.

Love these guys!! We dashed in 15 min before closing on a Sunday night and the welcomed us! Trout was excellent, tacos amazing. Bottom line, first and foremost, it's the people who make the restaurant. Doc Martiins has the people! read more

Pretty great! As far as Taos from what I have seen, this is one of two higher-endish eateries. Great ambiance and menu and a pretty nice wine list and food paring/wine pairing list. The lobby/bar area seemed like a fun place to grab a drink while enjoying live entertainment that they schedule seven days a week. I was a little put off that I was the only one that was asked for an ID. Sure I was with my 60 year old mother and her 64 year old beau, but I am near 30 myself. I just thought it was a little strange. read more

Came upon this gem of a resturant. Excellent service (to waitress with beautiful eyes), the pacing of our food choices came out with perfect timing. This allowed us to savor our meal and allowed for flavors of each course to set in. One notable dish we ordered was the Clams and Chorizo. Seriously one of the best clam dishes I have ever experienced. Cooked to perfection. My significant other completely felt the same about this food item. The rest of our choices were equally as good. This resturant is a must go if you are visiting Taos, NM. Very delightful environment and very much has the "Nothern New Mexico" vibe going. Loved it! read more

Doc Martin's - This Picture does absolutely no justice to this dish. It is an excellent choice. A must try~ you will not be disappointed. - American Near Me - Taos, New Mexico

Very disappointing Christmas Eve dinner. This is, unfortunately, the second time we've had a really bad experience with a group of 7/8 of us eating at Doc Martin's within 3 months, and even though we have enjoyed the restaurant over the years, we certainly won't be returning. I had called a week in advance to make the reservation, and was told we would be penciled in and the reservation needed to be confirmed. Given the fact that I needed a place to eat for 8 of us on Christmas Eve, I called again after not receiving said confirmation after 48 hours. I was told that our reservation was in the book, and we would receive confirmation... 3 days later I called yet again, to be told that the manager wasn't there and I would receive a call the next day. Needless to say, I didn't. So I called yet again, and was assured that the manager would return my call that day. She finally did, and told me that if we were willing to squeeze 8 of us onto a round table meant for 6, we would have a confirmed reservation. I said we would, and thought that would be the end of it. Christmas Eve brought us to the festively decorated lounge and Adobe Bar early, where we enjoyed some drinks. My husband went to make sure that our reservation was in the books at the restaurant. He returned with the news that at first our reservation wasn't to be found in the book, only after he mentioned that I had spoken to the manager was it located on a hand written note somewhere... 5 min before our reserved time, my husband went again to check on our table and was told that the kitchen was overwhelmed and that they couldn't seat us at the reserved time. I went to talk to the manager myself and mentioned that I wasn't very happy about this, as it had taken me several phone calls to secure this reservation, and I didn't quite understand how the kitchen could be overwhelmed - yes, it was Christmas Eve, but everybody knew this in advance, yes? Maybe additional staff could have been hired, or fewer reservations should have been accepted? I was brushed off fairly arrogantly by the manager, who just said that people in the bar were ordering food as well. I'm sure that came as a total surprise to everyone. We were finally seated 25 minutes after our reserved time. And then we waited for menus. A good 15 min. Then my husband went in search of menus. A couple at the next table over that was seated at the same time got up and left. When we looked at the menu, we realized why. We have always enjoyed the food at Doc Martin's before, we have come many times, at holiday times as well as during the rest of the year. This Christmas Eve menu was a true disappointment. It consisted of 4 entrees, none of them local, all of them apparently catered to producing as many generic meals as possible. Poor service continued, from the drink menus we had to ask for several times, to the bread that arrived a good 25 min after we were seated. Food arrived 55 minutes after we were seated, and I'm afraid to say it was just truly awful. The tenderloin was served with sweet potatoes that were mostly raw. The ratatouille contained severely under-cooked eggplant. The salmon was just bland. Overall, not a meal that would have been enjoyable on any day of the year, let alone at Christmas. We never even heard as much as a 'sorry about the wait'. As I mentioned before, something very similar happened in September, and we are going to make sure to avoid Doc Martin's restaurant at all costs in the future. read more

Had a wonderful dinner. Superb Chile rellenos- a must order. Available as appetizer. Beet salad also outstanding. Corn bread was very good with nice spicy sauce. Shrimp cerviche was good but nothing special. Mushroom dish was good but again not memorable. Mixed drinks very strong. Service was just about perfect. They get very busy so food might take a while. Prices very fair. We sat outside with our dog. Rear patio quiet with live music some nights. Very nice experience overall. read more

Just finished an unimpressive brunch. Overcooked eggs, hard as a rock pork belly, uncommunicative staff, and a wine list which was thoroughly underwhelming-not to mention that both the Rose' and the Rioja were both served in 1970's Chablis glasses. I wouldn't recommend anything other than the green chile stew-which was delicious. read more

We tried Doc Martin's after being turned away from two other restaurants for lack of reservations and a private party. We were greeted by live music in the attached bar. The restaurant is cozy and has a cabin, Adobe type feel. They have the most extensive wine list I have ever seen. Their menu was short and to the point with local highlights and a variety of options. The price was a bit higher than I would have liked with entrées ranging from $17-$35 per plate. They had 3 specials that also featured local and exotic fare. Swordfish pasta, Bison filet, pork ribs, rattlesnake and rabbit sausage, shrimp enchiladas...etc. my husband got the salmon special and it was wonderful! I got the shrimp and roasted corn enchiladas. Mine was very spicy. I would have rather liked the salmon. The service was attentive and polite. read more

We ate here after checking in the hotel and got a late brunch. The El Ultimo margarita was amazing. I had the Huevos Ranchero with Christmas chile sauce- it was great. I have used yelp as a very informative guide for a long time now but have never had the desire to make an account and review the restaurants I frequent. That being said the level of service I received from "doc martins" was poor enough that I felt I had an obligation to make an account and write a review for this place. Here is what to expect if you go and order lunch/dinner: 1: 30-40 min wait for a basic lunch order (2 burritos + club sandwich) 2: If you order when they are "transitioning" between lunch and dinner be ready for the waiter to tell you after you after you have waiting 25 minutes that your food will be a while longer because of this "transition" in the kitchen (which was something I've never heard before from an established restaurant), for the bean and cheese burritos and club sandwich we ordered I wondering what the chef(s) had doing up to that point? 3: When we first arrived most of the tables had an inadequate amount of menus, one or two at the tables we saw open, I really love taking turns to look at the menu, frankly it's embarrassing paper and leather booklets aren't that expensive to have a full set of. Do your self a favor and don't come here, unless you want to waste your afternoon away waiting for food. We didn't, that's why we walked out at the 40 minute mark. The bar seemed some what functional but honestly if something in like a chipotle came to town I wouldn't be surprised if a culinary blemish like this place would go out of business and I hope they do. read more

We came for Christmas dinner and boy what a disappointment. The salad and potato leek soup were fair to medium, tiny portions. The sea bass was overcooked, the sauce non descript, the side dish, which I believe was some kind of corn and squash mixture was mushy and tasteless, the winter greens were good. My husband's prime rib was not medium rare as ordered but medium to well, however it was cold. We did not see a waiter to be able to return it or have it warmed. The taste was good, but the horse radish was more of a mayonnaise. So we ordered dessert. How can they go wrong right? Wrong. Apple crisp was ok, not amazing, but the bread pudding was wet and mushy and tasteless. The waiter explained, as though we had never had a bread pudding before, that something was poured on it to make it wet and then he disappeared again. His explanation for the terrible California Chardonnay was similarly off putting "you know they put flavoring in California wines and they all are sweet and taste this way." Obviously not knowledgeable about wines. No responsibility taken by the waiter for the restaurant having chosen to put a god awful wine on their special Christmas menu. Not once did he ask how our meal was as he would have heard "a crying shame for $142.00!!" We both wished we had not eaten anything and instead stayed in our hotel room to celebrate Christmas instead. If I really search for something good to say about the meal I can say that the French Chardonnay that was brought to replace the terrible California Chardonnay was very good and I did enjoy that, along with my husband's company. Plus when we arrived early and were seated very quickly. That was our Christmas meal. read more

I have been coming to Taos for years, and once again I gave Doc Martin's another try after being disappointed before. And once again, it disappointed. OMG. Blue Corn Blueberry Pancakes and Chocolate Pumpkin Muffin. Best meal on this trip, including places in Santa Fe.

How this "restaurant" has not won top honors as being the worst restaurant in all of Taos is a travesty. It is! THE! first class, second rate "eatery" in all of the northern New Mexican senior citizen loitering rooms. Of all the rooms that breathe decay and remind you not so subtly that death is around the corner, this establishment and the hordes of dust mites who fills the air are here to greet you. Then there was the food. I ordered what was listed as a flat iron steak. However, I believe it was replaced by what could only have been road kill that was dried into jerky. Followed by being soaked in old pool water to remove any flavor the motley morsel was then left on a concrete sidewalk to properly "age" as only truly 3 star food debris can be. At one point a gruff looking alley dog wondered in, snarled his way on over to my table and took a bite of my "steak." You will never read the obituary of this poor pup's fateful demise, but trust me when I tell you I saw that bite of petrified gristle put the most violent stranglehold on that gagging canine. That concrete Carne, an enemy so worthy, that never did a more steady stomach meet a more fearsome. If Rocky had trained on this cut of meat it would have hit back harder than any steroid filled Russian ever could. At least it had cardboard cut outs of potatoes and veggies on the side to completely dry out my mouth. Those sterile spuds were trying to protect me, to say "no, don't, we're going to make your mouth so dry and devoid of flavor that you won't be able to put that tenderized cow's hoof in your mouth." My family had what we believed were going to be tamales. In this new age of rustic cuisine the classical delicious and juicy tamales of old, so bourgeois these days, we're replaced. The chefs, trying to elevate our pallets, respectfully only served the brittle corn husks and dried bean skins. The brittle shards of "food" were so new age and cutting edge the mouths and stomachs of my family just weren't up to date and didn't recognize how a plate of dried vegetable skins that shred one's tounge and resemble a horse eating dried straw is so en vogue. Truly, bonnie, our server, was the best part of the whole experience. She was the band playing while the ship sunk; the bright ember in the dying fire. She was delightful. I only wish she can clone herself. Therefore, every daredevil patron who holds up a middle finger to modern edible cuisine and says "I'm a true Patriot and I only eat the gruel and leather shoe stew so popularized by civil war veteran stories that I only dine at Doc Martin's," then at least every one of them can have one enjoyable moment in an otherwise long tour through the culinary house of horrors. If I could color this one star in black to match the color of my soul after eating this "food" I would. read more
