So at 8:30pm, we settled for a loaded baked potato, and black beans & roasted corn, and carrot cake. They were tasty but the corn and beans had the dreaded Canola. Bernice completely understood our avoidance of the "bad" oils. We minimized it on just the one side dish. We were hungry. But please owners, switch to lard! Or butter. It's the trend and you'll get more business. It costs about $.50 a plate more. We"ll pay it. Many will. It was quiet and restful dining. Sagebrush was across the street from our hotel, so we were grateful we had no more driving on an 11 hour day from Flagstaff.

The pasta bolognese were perhaps a dash too creative deviating somewhat from a traditional meat sauce (here with black olives and without, or at least no noticeable, tomato). The petit filet was ok but slightly undercooked. The service was on point, pleasant and efficient. The atmosphere is darker and cozy, but due to the small rooms and proximity of tables maybe a bit cramped..... you can't help but hearing other table's conversations as irritating as they may be.

I will say- the food was decent but it was nothing extravagant or to write home about like others have mentioned in the past. A lot of items on the menu have like one or two ingredients that I feel throw the dish off, so it was difficult deciding what to get there. We ordered the cornbread, mussels, the trout and the bison when we went for dinner. By far my biggest complaint with the whole experience was the fact that it is a cash only establishment, with no ATM even available on the property. You have to drive beforehand to the closest Allsups and withdraw whatever you feel will be the most for the check plus gratuity. This really limits what you can/can't get on the menu depending on how much cash you bring. I personally do not enjoy feeling limited by that or having to do math at the table in my head to make sure I got enough to cover it all. This also makes people look at the menu beforehand maybe online to get a good idea before driving to said gas station. They say on the website it's because "By forgoing transaction fees, we can better support our employees, serve organic food, and boost our local economy." but in reality I believe it's because they do not want to pay credit card fees and whatnot. Their sister restaurant Manzanita (which we also dined at) was not cash only though which was odd if they are related, so something isn't lining up at The Love Apple. We still had the best time with each others company which matters the most celebrating a special occasion, but I'm not sure I'd go out of my way to tell everyone that they gotta go there when they are in Taos.

If you have questions about the menu, ask for her recommendations--you won't be disappointed. My partner ordered Martin's Breakfast Burrito, and I had the huevos rancheros. Both were fresh, flavorful, and exactly what we were hoping for. Michael's Kitchen is only open Wednesday through Sunday from 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., so plan accordingly. We arrived around 9:30 on a Sunday morning and had about a 30 minute wait. It was busy, but the wait was actually enjoyable because the restaurant has several little nooks filled with antiques and artwork by local artists. There was plenty to look at, and the time passed quickly. Taos has many wonderful mom and pop restaurants, but from what I learned during our visit, there are fewer locally owned restaurants serving traditional Spanish cuisine.
