Beef chimichanga - A white plate holds a beef chimichanga covered in sauce and shredded cheese, accompanied by rice, refried beans, and a small side salad with chopped vegetables and greens. The setting appears to be outdoors at La Cueva Cafe in Taos, NM, with a textured black table surface visible.

The food was very good, the portion was satisfying, and the service was great. They offer vegetarian options that can be veganized.

Our sharing desert, Mango Cream Chimichanga.

Two years ago after spending months in CO and my wife and I were driving home to Las Cruces. We stayed overnight in Taos and we were craving NM food and La Cueva was spot on. In September, we visited Taos again with our son and we decided to go back. From the restaurant outside the place looks like a dive. It is simple cafe with colorful decoration, and with real NM cuisine and good service. Most of the tables are on their enclosed patio. My wife ordered pollo en mole, my son chicken enchiladas, I had shrimp enchiladas. They have on the menu chips and salsa for $5.95, expensive when other restaurants serve them for free.

Combination Plate - A white plate holds a meal with Mexican and New Mexican cuisine, including rice topped with cheese, two enchiladas covered in sauce, and a taco filled with lettuce, tomato, and shredded cheese. A small container of salsa is placed on the plate. The setting includes a dark wooden table with a red bowl and a glass of water in the background, indicating a casual dining environment at La Cueva Cafe.

First culinary experience in Taos! My mouth is watering as I write this review. My friends and I walked around the street facade to find the main entrance, then we were guided to a separate building with additional seating. It felt exciting and welcoming. Customer service is excellent here. We each ordered a combination plate - enchiladas, chile relleno, and a taco. Little bit of everything (with Christmas chile of course) perfect for sampling the main menu items. The food tasted phenomenal, including their house made salsa. Would come back here again next time I'm in Taos!

Outside - The photo depicts the exterior of La Cueva Cafe, a restaurant with a beige stucco facade. A large sign displays the cafe's name and contact number. The window features neon signs indicating the cafe is open, with additional signage for hours, menu items, and dietary options like wheat-free and gluten-free. The window also shows the cafe's hours from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and a sign indicating it is closed on Sundays.

Good and quick service, accommodated large group well. Liked the combo plate the best- delicious chili relleno. The Caesar was ok- dressing did not taste house made.

This is a 4/5 star review. La Cueva Cafe is beyond casual in decor, ambiance, and the family feel, but do not let that keep you from thoroughly enjoying the food. You will get great, fresh authentic food at an affordable price. I loved my chicken enchiladas with poblano mole. The mole was deep and rich and with a wonderful (and gentle) kick from the poblano. My wife wanted a veggie dish, and she got a terrific veggie enchilada with "Christmas" salsa. This is the only place, so far, to offer something beyond a cheese quesadilla or something similar when trying to go veggie. The mango chimichanga, for desert, would be at home on a fine dining menu. So great.

Looking out the window at sunset from my seat - A window decorated with string lights and dried chili peppers hanging in front of it. The sunset outside is visible, with trees and power lines in the background. Inside, there is a computer monitor, a black cloth, and a blue cup on a table. The window has handwritten text and stickers, indicating a business or restaurant setting.

This place is little and kind of in a hard spot to find. It looks unassuming from the outside. Inside, the place is tiny and cozy, with a fireplace I believe. Not a lot of room to move around, but worked for dining alone. The service was good. The menu is interesting and varied, with different sauces and kinds of dishes. I was pleased with the interesting variety of vegetarian options. My food was really delicious. It totally hit the spot and my was worth my lunch stop on my drive. My margarita was pretty and tasty, as were the chips and salsa. I left full and satisfied.

La Cueva is a hidden gem! The service is great and the food is excellent! I recommend the chili relleno and a margarita!

This is a great local spot for lunch! A shop owner recommended it, and it was delicious. We got right in even though it was busy. We sat in the small dining area, but I think there's another building with seating. Our food was very classic New Mexican. The guacamole and salsa was so tasty. My chili relleno on my combo plate was the best one I've had in New Mexico so far.

Amazing food- You pull up to this tiny spot and it does not look like much but do not be fooled- it is such a hidden gem. Super friendly staff but that food was fresh and amazing. The shrimp chipotle tacos were delicious and the carnitas burrito- amazing!!

A cute little cafe with a few indoor tables and a patio space with multiple outdoor tables with large umbrella canopies! The servers were all super friendly and nice, and while the service was a little on the slower side, we did not mind too much as we were there to relax in good company. The best entree that we ordered was the shrimp enchiladas and the second best was the beef chimichanga plate! We also ordered the combination plate but felt that the other two were the stars of the show. A few things to be aware of, there is limited parking in the area due to ongoing construction work being done. Also, due to the nearby construction, there is debris and the lingering smell of heavy tar in the air while you are sitting in the outdoor patio area. In my opinion, the portions are on the smaller side and if you are super hungry you may want to consider ordering an appetizer + entree, or even an extra entree to split. Unfortunately, I have to detract a star because the iced Diet Coke that we ordered was flat and also had the aftertaste of soap. Hopefully this can be fixed in the future for other guests!

Surprisingly awesome cerveche! Pics did not do it justice. Hot sauce makes it spectacular! My Pic is after I killed the avocado on top.

She even gave us a heads up that she was also handling a 7-top table and made sure we could get our order in before theirs since it was just the two of us. Thought that was really thoughtful and great service. We started with the salsa, queso, guacamole, and a Caesar salad for appetizers and everything was delicious. A great way to kick off the meal. For the main course we both went with the steak fajitas. The steak was a little on the tough side, but overall still really good and heavily seasoned. The portion is generous too. One order could easily be split between two people. It comes with rice, beans, cheese, pico, and three tortillas. The restaurant itself is super charming. It's inside the historic Taos Inn and you can really feel the history in the space. The atmosphere alone makes the experience memorable. Would highly recommend checking out Doc Martin's if you're visiting Taos. Great service, great atmosphere, and a solid meal.

The interior is not quite as…read moreupscale as a few other eateries in the area, but it's set within the original adobe house and celebrates local flavors beyond traditional chile, including choke cherry and fresh trout. Service is good, and the food is fresh and tasty, albeit a bit overpriced.
