The place that I was staying was in walking distance to this small restaurant. It wasn't much to look at but the food was outstanding. I ordered chile rellenos with red and green chile sauce (Christmas) and they were some of the best I've ever had. The prices were some of the lowest I'd seen in Taos and the food exceptional. There was plenty of staff who checked on us on a regular basis and they were all very friendly. read more

What a gem to find! My husband and I saw some reviews and decided to give this a try. I out it in my maps and followed the walking directions for over 45 minutes and kept going to an empty lot. Finally we figured it had been put on the wrong side of the Main Street so we went the other way and ended up hungry and ready for a drink and dinner. The only negative is that I couldn't get a margarita other than the wine margaritas they have. Since there is a sweet and sour mix in them I went for a white wine instead and it was perfect for the day. We ordered our drinks and chips and guacamole to get started while we looked at the menu. Our server was super and we sat on the patio in the shade which was lovely. There was plenty of shade for the hot day. To stave off our hunger while we looked at the menu we ordered the chips and salsa with guacamole. The salsa was fabulous as was the rest but I had to comment on the salsa because so often these days it's just too tomato-y or bland. This was flavorful and had a bit of spice. For dinner, we ordered the steak tampiquena and I would get it again. Savory, perfectly cooked and hearty. Check this place out if you are visiting! read more

La Cueva Cafe - Mexican Near Me - Taos, New Mexico

La Cueva Café was one of the highlights of our visit to Taos! The chile rellenos were absolutely delicious--full of authentic flavor and perfectly prepared. The real standout, though, was the flan. It was hands down the best I've ever had: incredibly smooth, rich, and just the right amount of sweetness. Friendly service, great food, and a welcoming atmosphere made for a wonderful dining experience. We'll definitely be back the next time we're in Taos! read more

I got the popular chile rellenos with red and green (Christmas) sauce not really knowing what was in store (Mexican food not my #1). It was so good, filled with moist chunks of chicken breast. Rice and beans were fine, nice people working altho we had to sit in the back room which felt more like a storage space. Their wine margarita wasn't our favorite, seemed a little "thin". Not sure how to describe it but glad we checked it out. read more

Definitely a must stop if your visiting Taos New Mexico. The shrimp enchiladas were tasty and the right amount of spice. We had eaten here two years ago and enjoyed our food, but this time we were disappointed. We ordered the fajitas and the meat was tough as well as overcooked. The guacamole was fresh and tasty as was the salsa. The service was fast but then the waiter disappeared. We went about 4:30 on a Saturday unaware they closed at 5. Sitting outside under the umbrellas was pleasant and a contrast to indoors where we had sat last time. read more

This was our first stop for New Mexican food when we got to Taos. Our expectations were high based on the reviews. The food was okay - not bad but kind of mild and not what we expected. My green chili chicken enchiladas were so pale - the sauce wasn't even green (and the flavor matched the color). It scratched an itch, but we found much better, more flavorful food at other places. read more

Took 30 minutes for them to come over and take our order after we were seated. The food did not come for another 90 min at least. They had a huge group seated before us but it seems like their kitchen didn't have the capacity to handle the tables they had. read more

Mole sauce is probably in my top 3 (probably tied for 2nd). Very friendly staff. Small and quaint. Servers familiar with Celiac and gluten dietary restrictions which is always a + with my family. Very limited parking however. read more

Reasonably priced, solid, and quick Mexican/New Mexican lunch. We sat on the patio outside and the service was efficient and quick. The salsa was delicious, the guacamole was good, and the enchiladas has a lot of shredded chicken. The red chile, green chile, and mole sauces were all tasty. The tortilla soup had too much of a tomato flavor. Overall, a good solid and quick lunch. read more

The food at La Cueva was fantastic. We started with the guacamole and salsa. We devoured both. My daughter had the Hamburger and fries. She told me that was the best burger that she ever ate at a Mexican restaurant. My wife had the carne asada and chili relleno. She said it was delicious. I had the burrito with red and green chili. The burrito was great and I was a member of the clean plate club. The service was not as amazing. Don't be in a hurry to go anywhere. Getting our food and drinks was slow. But they rebounded with the quality of food. Finally the ambiance. This is definitely a local spot. It is in a hole on the wall building with a large New Mexico themed patio area. Plus an apartment that was turned into an eating area. Interesting to say the least but it works. La Cueva speed up your service and it's one of the best local joints in Santa Fe. read more

First meal of mole chicken enchiladas was delicious, the second meal of mole chicken fajitas was burned beyond recognition. Highly variable food and service. Very good food, nice staff. One of the better restaurants in Taos. I would recommend. Unique building and seating, but it adds to the experience. read more

This little place is unassuming and tasty! Diverse menu, lightening fast service, but very small on the inside. It looked like they had a set up for some sort of outdoor dining but since it was February when I stopped by I didn't investigate that part any further. Don't let the unassuming exterior make you skip this place without a second thought. read more

Two years ago after spending months in CO and my wife and I were driving home to Las Cruces. We stayed overnight in Taos and we were craving NM food and La Cueva was spot on. In September, we visited Taos again with our son and we decided to go back. From the restaurant outside the place looks like a dive. It is simple cafe with colorful decoration, and with real NM cuisine and good service. Most of the tables are on their enclosed patio. My wife ordered pollo en mole, my son chicken enchiladas, I had shrimp enchiladas. They have on the menu chips and salsa for $5.95, expensive when other restaurants serve them for free. read more

I'm not going to tell you it's for everyone. It's for those who know that some of the best food comes from the most unassuming places. The service is solid and laid back. If you're looking for fancy, this probably isn't your place. But if you're looking for authentic, delicious Mexican food with character, this place is absolutely worth a visit. read more

First culinary experience in Taos! My mouth is watering as I write this review. My friends and I walked around the street facade to find the main entrance, then we were guided to a separate building with additional seating. It felt exciting and welcoming. Customer service is excellent here. We each ordered a combination plate - enchiladas, chile relleno, and a taco. Little bit of everything (with Christmas chile of course) perfect for sampling the main menu items. The food tasted phenomenal, including their house made salsa. Would come back here again next time I'm in Taos! read more

The chipotle seafood enchiladas were delicious and stuffed with fresh salmon. The chipotle sauce had great flavor without being too spicy. I loved the pinto beans--they tasted authentic, like they came straight from the olla! The only reason I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5 is the service detail. My water was served lukewarm with no ice, and I had to specifically ask for it. read more

This place was legit Mexican food. You could tell that it was freshly made and that the flavors did not come out of a box. We had multiple dishes over a couple of days, but really love the green chili on the burrito. My wife was vegan, so she had limited options but still love the food that she got there. Will definitely head back to this place when whenever we are in town. read more

This is a 4/5 star review. La Cueva Cafe is beyond casual in decor, ambiance, and the family feel, but do not let that keep you from thoroughly enjoying the food. You will get great, fresh authentic food at an affordable price. I loved my chicken enchiladas with poblano mole. The mole was deep and rich and with a wonderful (and gentle) kick from the poblano. My wife wanted a veggie dish, and she got a terrific veggie enchilada with "Christmas" salsa. This is the only place, so far, to offer something beyond a cheese quesadilla or something similar when trying to go veggie. The mango chimichanga, for desert, would be at home on a fine dining menu. So great. read more

This place is little and kind of in a hard spot to find. It looks unassuming from the outside. Inside, the place is tiny and cozy, with a fireplace I believe. Not a lot of room to move around, but worked for dining alone. The service was good. The menu is interesting and varied, with different sauces and kinds of dishes. I was pleased with the interesting variety of vegetarian options. My food was really delicious. It totally hit the spot and my was worth my lunch stop on my drive. My margarita was pretty and tasty, as were the chips and salsa. I left full and satisfied. read more

This is a great local spot for lunch! A shop owner recommended it, and it was delicious. We got right in even though it was busy. A cute little cafe with a few indoor tables and a patio space with multiple outdoor tables with large umbrella canopies! The servers were all super friendly and nice, and while the service was a little on the slower side, we did not mind too much as we were there to relax in good company. The best entree that we ordered was the shrimp enchiladas and the second best was the beef chimichanga plate! We also ordered the combination plate but felt that the other two were the stars of the show. A few things to be aware of, there is limited parking in the area due to ongoing construction work being done. Also, due to the nearby construction, there is debris and the lingering smell of heavy tar in the air while you are sitting in the outdoor patio area. In my opinion, the portions are on the smaller side and if you are super hungry you may want to consider ordering an appetizer + entree, or even an extra entree to split. Unfortunately, I have to detract a star because the iced Diet Coke that we ordered was flat and also had the aftertaste of soap. Hopefully this can be fixed in the future for other guests! read more

This was a highlight and a fun spot. We had seats outside and the biggest thing to note was the quick and friendly service and the amazing flavors of the food. I haven't had chili rellanos before so was looking forward to this taste of New Mexico. It was an amazing flavor of just enough heat in the green sauce to make it interesting, but not enough to overpower combined with the cheese and perfect fry...not grease but crispy and crunchy. I ate every last bite! It had a great mix of flavors and paired so well with the beans and rice. I liked the spot and would go back again and can honestly say it was perfect! read more
