I will only come here and NEVER Gilroy. You don't need an appointment here and you won't be here all day like other DMV's. I am a disabled veteran and Gilroy made me jump through hoops. I went to the DMV on Senter RD and in San Jose and they told me I can't have a handicap placard because I wasn't missing a limb. I said "what the f... are you talking about missing a limb?" She said that her manager said that veterans have to be missing a limb to be handicap. I said, "Are you freaking kidding me? People have a placard for being obese. I have my documentation and verification through the VSO. " So I was told to come here. I recommend this DMV to all my friends and comrads. I was in and out In less than 15 minutes. They were friendly ans knew exactly what needed to be done. The second time I came was when my vehicle got flooded when we had bad floods earlier this year and they told me that it can take 12 weeks to fully release my vehicle, plates and title to USAA. The third time was today. My dad passed away last month so we brought in all paperwork to get vehicles put in my moms name. The two ladies that helped us were super sweet and helpful. They said we have to wait until 40 days after death to complete it. But gave us the forms we needed to fill out for the vehicles and walked us through it all. After a recent visit, I must say that this DMV office has done a complete 180° turn around. I arrived without an appointment and was in & out in under 10 minutes. Yes, I am recommending this DMV. I've been to a lot of California DMV's and have had the worst experience, pretty much every time! But today I was in the area and needed to take care of vehicle stuff, so I ventured to the Hollister DMV. I'm happy to report that they have a fine running machine! I had an appointment for a drivers license today, 03/28/2025 at 3:40. I had scheduled it a while ago and when I walk in to tell the lady with the pink jacket that I have a drivers test, she says that I don't have an appointment? Or that I scheduled for a permit test at 3:20? I couldn't find my confirmation code because there is no service there and instead, I showed her the text I received 03/13/2025 saying "Drivers License Appointment" at this direction at 15:40! Told me I had to reschedule because there was no appointment at 3:40. This is absolutely unacceptable and you can't tell me I don't have an appointment when I literally scheduled it!! read more

Lady who greeted us at the door was great and super helpful. Unfortunately, we had the opposite experience with a woman with thin red hair and glasses at window number 1. She was extremely rude, would not even make eye contact with us, and completely ignored everything we were saying as if we weren't another human. I am really appalled by the service and the way we were spoke to during my fiancé's behind the wheel test. The examiner wasn't polite from the start, this isn't surprising but we expected this type of service from this office, what followed is what left me without words. My fiancé is Spanish speaking and understands basic commands when it comes to driving. After signing to start the test I was walking away from the car when I heard her speak loudly to him, she then asked if he spoke English, after hearing his broken English. I then turned to assist the situation, I nicely told her he only spoke fluently Spanish. She then sighed, rolled her eyes and stated "he has to know English to do this test". I was thrown off by this comment. She then continues to state that "if he read the study booklet, he would know this" I then stated that the book he studied is in Spanish and he has completed his whole testing in Spanish. She then runs in to the office to grab a study guide, and then starts to break down the book to me and flipped pages. She spoke to me as if I was a child. She then states "well he isn't going to pass, I tell you that off the bat, we won't even leave this parking lot". This isn't the first time I have assisted a Spanish speaker at the DMV, I have never had this type of treatment or been told that not knowing English was such a disadvantaged or couldn't be accommodated. She then states "the test is postponed because he isn't going to know the vehicle commands" But in all reality he knew all of them, including the arm signals etc. She then adds "I have openings tomorrow for behind the wheel test, if he can take the book and learn English by tomorrow, he can come back tomorrow". This comment and in the manner it was said made us feel racially humiliated. At this moment, my eyes became very watery and voice cracked because I was so appalled of this whole situation. The examiner noticed this and became softer with her approach and recommended us to go to another DMV where she knows there is Spanish examiners. After, leaving this horrible experience. I went online to DMV.ca.gov website and filled the survey where I state the above. I then begin to read the study book she gave me in Spanish. It clearly says that an interpreter is allowed during the vehicle command portion, just not allowed in the car during the behind wheel. You can find this on Page 3 in the "Criterios de Examen de Manejo" booklet. I definitely think this was a disservice of her part. It was also a waste of time for us because we both missed work to be there to do the testing. We felt undervalued due the language barrier which is a reflection of our race and culture. This wasn't right at any level. The situation could have been handled in a different manner, instead we were humiliated and talked to in such a degrading manner. read more

Iam 76 years old and went renew my license. I was feeling somewhat overwhelmed by the forms, testing and procedures. But the folks at our DMV treated me with respect, were polite and courteous. They showed me how to use the computer to put in my information and get registered. The receptionist and the clerk at station 1, were very helpful and kind. Definitely not what I was expecting. The DMV staff is pretty nice, the reason I'm giving this 1 star is for the behind the wheel driver test examiner named Bernice. This woman enjoys failing people. My son came in for behind the wheel test, and she failed him because of a minor mistake in the parking lot for not turning the steering wheel enough, and this was after the test was over and my son was parking in. The second time she failed him again, for one error. From what I know 1 error is still passing, but like I said she enjoys crushing people. My son is a great driver, obviously I know that, he did over 50 hours with me. I was very confident in him passing, but nope not when Bernice is the judge. read more

Worst place ever. 2 days in a row I have been turned away. Got there at 3:45. They are suppose to be open until 5pm. I was next in line at 4:20pm and was told that they had no more numbers. This is by far one of the worst DMV's... To be honest, all DMV's are bad, but this one here takes the whole enchilada on horrible service and not caring about you. They love to make up stories that computers are down and they love to take there time with one client, they also love to ignore you when you have a simple question. I'm really impressed with the process there. I walked in because my tags hadn't come in the mail and it had been several months. I was greeted by someone who highlighted the areas of the forms I needed to fill out and assigned me a number. Before I knew it my number was called and I walked out with my tags in hand. This works because you don't have to wait long to know if you have everything you need before you wait in the queue and you have time to fill out the forms before you get called. So the clerks can quickly process there paper work and move on to the next person. Also, everyone there was reasonable, friendly and helpful. In the past I've always dreaded a trip to the DMV, but the Hollister DMV changes my expectations. It should be the example for the rest. read more

We Hollistonians don't get a lot of advantages in life. We have an average education system with very little choices, we have to drive at least 20 miles to get to a job that doesn't involve a spatula and a paper hat, and every few years or so the water board sends us a note saying that our water was poison last month. The one thing we did have was a DMV with a relatively short wait time and a pretty simple behind-the-wheel. Unfortunately, every Asshole south of the peninsula got wind of this and drives down to Hollister for every little thing, probably not even adding the 2 hour drive time to their slightly shorter wait times in their calculation. So now the place is jam packed full of furriners every day. Grr.. .. The staff is generally OK. The Asian man is pleasant, if not overly friendly, the two Mexican girls are gruff but not vindictive, and the woman from New York is actually funny and nice to be around. The behind the wheel test is pretty simple. Make sure you slow to 15 over the train tracks and you know that T intersection where it says don't turn on red? DON'T TURN ON RED! I can't bring myself to say "Yay, I'm a fan!" about the DMV. Maybe I could if all the staff was like the New Yorker, but giving it a good review would only encourage more silicon valley-ites to stop by. GO TO YOUR OWN DMV, LEECHES. My son took his initial driving test at the Santa Clara DMV (no stars for that dive), and his instructor had a bad attitude from the get go. She was annoyed and looked like the DMV was the last place she wanted to be at. He failed before he barely left the parking lot. We then scheduled an appointment in Hollister because his permit was about to expire, and Hollister was available. We also thought a smaller outfit may still honor customer service and treat us as humans, not animals in a line. Due to my father's untimely death the driving test took a back seat and was delayed by a few months, getting close to the permit expiring. We were scolded for that by the Santa Clara instructor. Bernice at the Hollister DMV was the utmost professional and was able to relate to a teenage boy. She treated both of us with respect, set our son at ease and an hour later he walked into the DMV, beaming with pride that he has passed his driving test with a stick shift car. I went to this dmv first time to give driving exam, I passed. I know about this dmv from one of my uncle, and the exam was easy and the instructor was good with smiley face. The roads were small and less pedestrians and less traffic. Compared to other dmv, I like it to recommend people to go there; who are going to give drive test. Horrible, horrible service. I scheduled an appointment online, I get to the counter, and the guy (some idiot named Joe) made me look for my confirmation number, which I never received so I had to login to my dmv account to find it. I come to find that the guy that was helping me had access to a system where he could verify my appointment but he opted not to do so, instead he made me look it up online. Joe was argumentative, capricious, and defensive. A person with good customer service skills would have said, no worries, let me look it up in our system. That would have been the right approach. If I truly did not have an appointment, then he would have determined that pretty quickly. read more

The worst DMV. When you come be prepared! It's not good enough to bring your paperwork, you must also know exactly how every item should be filled out and know the employees job as well because they sure as heck are not going to make your life easy. In the middle of my transaction the clerk took a break & I was told to either wait for her to come back or take another number. I asked another lady to help since my clerk went on break and showed her my number. She rudely asks "do you have an appointment?" I replied; "I was being helped by the clerk and she took a break". The lady says "if you don't have an appointment you will need to take another number". If they weren't a State entity they would all be fired & jobless. read more

My daughter had to take her behind-the-wheel exam at DMV-Hollister since all other DMVs in the SF, S.Bay Areas were booked solid for over a month!!! We've never been to Hollister so, I took her for a practice drive in the city prior to her exam day. The roads are A LOT smaller with many stop signs; new family homes/roads being build; some large intersections; 3 Starbucks; 2 rail road tracks, a Target, Nobhill, & Safeway; several Schools; a Downtown, and nice backroads leading to farmlands & hills. ** **Her DMV instructor (female) was pleasant & professional.** My daughter made 3 driving errors (you can get 15 errors at most). She turned a little too slow, canceled the signalling too early, and a turn that was a little too wide for the road. *** My kid passed as she got everything else right. read more

Went here with my daughters friend for a behind the wheel test. This is the smallest DMV I have ever seen but everyone we encountered here was friendly. The instructor, Bernice had a smile on her face and seemed to enjoy her job! After when we went in to have the license processed and we dealt with another person who was just as friendly and seemed just as nice. I would highly recommend this DMV- just remember to make an appointment! read more

If I could give no stars I would. They are the rudest and most condensing staff I have ever encountered at any DMV. We as people don't fill out the type of paper work required by the DMV daily and god forbid we fill something out wrong or incompletely. Be sure that they will inform you in the most demeaning way possible. They are extremely slow and need to come up with a better method of helping customers. I should not have to wait an hour to have vehicle verification, then be told to get back in line to wait another 45 minutes just to be issued plates. If you come to this DMV be prepared to waste at least an entire day here. read more
