Washington State Department of Licensing - Website and texting technology make it very convenient for us to arrive on time and check in.

Discovered unexpectedly that my license had expired and I needed to renew my license asap. Decided…read moreto secure an enhanced driver license or Real ID. Every day at 8:20 AM the Redmond location releases same day appointments, I was lucky enough to get one of those. FYI every Friday at 4 PM they release appointments for the following week. Otherwise you're looking at booking out a month in advance. I was able to register and secure an appointment very quickly online -- although I will say that the website did not have EDL as one of its first options, which I think it should give the importance of that license now. I had to use the search bar to find it and only then did it pull up. It was confusing trying to make an appointment for a renewal but it wasn't just a renewal I was looking for. What was very helpful was the updating texts that reminded me of the appointment time and gave me the option to check in online. The helpful staff at the registration information desk confirmed my check-in. The waiting area was spacious with many chairs, and there were 19 kiosks which meant very speedy processing. I didn't wait more than five minutes however I had to step out of the waiting area for a moment and it was during that time that my number was called. The saving grace was the smart technology was that sent me a text informing me that my number had been called. Nathan Diamond assisted me. I had my previous drivers license which was then canceled out, my W-2 has proof of address and my photo was taken. I was given a temporary license that would function for 45 days but I could expect my license to arrive in the next 30 days. Organ donation was confirmed and I was given the option of putting my blood type if I had written proof of it, which I wish I had known in advance. I did not however have such a document with me so I was not able to put it on my card but I was told I could update anytime. I chose the eight year option which was about $144 out the door after all fees, etc. The five minutes or so with Mr. Diamond was really educational. I think I was out in 15 minutes total. The parking lot out front was free parking so no stress about parking. The staff was helpful so asked for their names. The two people at registration were informative and helpful as well.

The front staff administrator checking people in was efficient but unfriendly. I asked her a question and she gave me a blank stare. She probably has a lot of people asking her questions all day so whatever. Glad Washington state has it together.

They said they would have replaced it for free if I had come in the same day but my husband and I both work full time so getting the time to get into their office and wait in line for who knows how long is extremely difficult. It didn't change the date of my registration or cost any more than if I had been able to come in the same day to replace but they still had to find some way to rip me off just because they can. Absolutely disgusting and goes to exactly why so many people despise certain government agencies.

OVERALL: 9.67/10 (Yelp converted score: 5/5). This place is a shining example of great, courteous,…read moreand efficient customer service. I'll definitely be back in the future for my licensing needs. After getting turned away at another location (shall be left unnamed), we were trying to get plates for a car transferred to WA from California (2010 Lexus IS250). 1) VALUE FOR MONEY: 9/10. The unfortunate part is that the payment terminal charges $2.25 per transaction (3% of the tx for $75.01+ on credit cards), so I'd recommend using a debit card (flat $2.25). In total, the title registration and plates cost $198 (before the debit tx processing fee). Not bad! 2) QUALITY: 10/10. The staff promptly acknowledged us, and worked efficiently on our case with no hassles or interruptions. The clerk made sure the phone number on record was correct (repeating it back to us) and ensured we understood the expectations (signing, dating the right locations, verifying info, etc) as outlined by the documents. We received our plates immediately after paying the title registration fees! 3) SERVICE: 10/10. We were in and out within 15 minutes - even with waiting for less than 5 minutes outside (there's a max of 6 people in the lobby). We came in to get plates for my partner's car, after she moved it up from her home city of LA, California.

Shoreline Department of Licensing - Great...waited here for nothing. Sigh. (6/5/24)

Last month, I went in for a walk-in license renewal that needed to be done in person. I arrived about 15 minutes before opening, and although there was already a line, they had an employee outside checking in with people to make sure everyone was in the right place and knew whether they needed to stay in line. From the moment they opened, I was in and out in less than 35 minutes. If that's not efficiency, I don't know what is! I can't speak for every service they offer, but based on my experience, I really appreciate the staff and how well they run things. Big bonus, they have ample parking!

Few routine appointments are as anxiety inducing for me than a trip to the Department of Licensing,…read morebut things went smoothly at Shoreline. A few caveats: 1) I showed up half an hour before they opened (there at 8:00 before 8:30 open) and there were over 20 people in line behind me by the time they opened. 2) I needed a simple renewal, which I couldn't do online because they force you in office every other renewal. People looking to upgrade their license or for something new were sorted behind all renewals. That was probably a bummer for the kid next to me who was excited for his first license, who watched like 15 people who showed up after him walk in first. 3) According to the lady who sorted us, walk ins will be unavailable as early as next month. Ouch! My license expires in about a month and the next-available appointment was about six weeks out, which is why I was a walk in. I checked availability the day I got my "It's time to renew" notice in the mail and it was already past my expiration date. No clue how things are going to be handled for those, like me, who don't obsess over license expirations. I'll probably put a reminder in my phone for seven years to check how far out appointments are being scheduled. Anyways, back to Shoreline DoL! They were efficient, they were polite, and I was out the door in ten minutes (bear in mind I was first in line, so YMMV). I have no idea what my picture looks like because I won't see it for two weeks, but the clerk assured me it was "fine."

Lower Queen Anne

Evidently I had been renewing my driver's license online for awhile, it was time to update my photo…read more& info after receiving a postcard notice in the mail. Info provided via QR code on the postcard and WA State Dept. of Licensing site were helpful. Unfortunately, the closest site in Shoreline was booked out to end of June! I can't chance driving with an expired license, so I started looking at other sites for available appointments. I snagged one for 5/8/26 at 0830 at the Seattle/Queen Anne site. I was also provided reminder updates prior and even on day of for check-in. Pro tips: Definitely make an online appointment versus hoping for same day service, unless you have plenty of time to potentially wait. Bring appropriate documentation to prove your identity and state residency. There's a list provided on their website. I had my current driver's license, car registration, passport, and car & homeowners insurance policies. Excessive, better to be prepared than not. Despite living in Shoreline, my appointment was scheduled at the Seattle/Queen Anne site. I gave myself plenty of time to locate it and find street parking. Thankfully, the parking rate via the app was reasonable. 45 minutes covered my time in line and the renewal process. When I approached the entrance 35 minutes early, there were folks already in line. Eventually this line stretched up the the sidewalk. Upon leaving, there was an even longer line and nearly full waiting area. Just saying. While I was waiting, I received a text to check-in to state that I was indeed onsite. This provided a secondary code to use upon entry and the check-in booth prior to being briefly seated. I literally was the first one served. Guess I did not need to be so early & freeze in line. That's on me though. I provided my current expiring license and answered all the questions asked. I even took a vision test to verify I no longer used corrective lenses/glasses for distance. I also declined my long time motorcycle endorsement. Note that driver's licenses can be renewed for either six or eight years. My photo was taken. This hopefully is an improvement over my passport and Costco membership card, lol. Turns out my ancient photo on record was since 2001! I finished up all the other things requested. Just make sure all the information on the temporary license is accurate on the screen before signing. This will be your temporary paper license until the renewed card arrives via mail. Note that there is an additional fee if payment is made via credit or debit card. No fee if payment is made via cash or personal check. I was done within ten minutes! Loved the humor and upbeat, friendly service from the gentleman at booth 4 that morning. I was expecting dour and curmudgeon service, ended up receiving the complete opposite in customer service. Props to that staff member! Many thanks! There's also a wall by the entrance/exit that had additional free informational pamphlets and guidebooks, just an fyi. Hope this Yelp post was helpful and that you have a positive experience renewing your driver's license onsite.

I arrived at 8:30 on a thursday, place didn't open until 9:30 (which I knew from looking on google)…read moreI was one of the first 7 people in line when I arrived as a walk in. when the place opened at 9:30 they only allowed 8 walk ins, everyone else who was outside waiting for almost an hour was sent home & made an appointment for next month to come back. I came in to get an enhanced license but enhanced license NEEDS an appointment, first appointment available was in October 20something, mind you it is the first week of September right now. So I just said f-it and only got my standard license because I need something. After waiting an hour & 30 minutes to be called after the place opened, I finally got it done quick at the booth. The amount of employees this place has is ridiculously understaffed, and the 4 people they had working were so. slow. between clients. if you've ever seen the movie zootopia, the sloths are faster in the movie. between each client the person behind the booth got up, stretched, stepped out to refil their coffee mugs, gave themselves a 10 minute break laughing with other employees in the booths, also not working. When the place opened the person who opened the doors informed us they were short staffed but "more employees would be arriving at 10" , which is fine and understandable.. but LOL. ONE employee arrived at 10:30 but gossiped with the other employees and didn't turn on his computer until 20 minutes later after catching up. In that time, another employee who was already there disappeared and didn't see them again the remainder of my time waiting. then after only accepting 8 "regular" walk ins, they still accepted about 5 "elder" walk ins (I don't know who is verifying their ages to be considered elder but I definitely got skipped in line by a 20 year old "elder") all the "elders" skipped my place in line as soon as they arrived and made my wait an hour and a half long after already waiting an hour outside before opening. the 8th walk in who was after me waited 2 hours and 15 minutes after opening. I got street parking from 8:30-11:30 and I made it back to my car 5 minutes to spare until 11:30. So if you need an enhanced license, you WILL need an appointment. Standard license, good luck coming in as a walk in if they let you in after waiting an hour outside before opening, just make an appointment to save yourself time, uber fees or parking fees (because they only have paid parking, fun!)
