One of the incredibly clean bathhouses - this was the toilet and shower side. Sinks are on the other side.

With a fantastic location just a couple of minutes from downtown Ogunquit and practically across the street from York's Animal Kingdom, Dixon's is a great alternative to staying in a hotel. The property is incredibly well maintained and the bathrooms are immaculate. One quirk regarding the bathhouse though is that you will find the toilets on one side and then the sinks outdoors on the opposite side of the building. Usually this isn't a big deal but when it's 3am and chilly outside you're usually trying to make your bathroom run as quick as possible so the setup could be a bit of a nuisance. If you're staying in a camper with a bathroom though the bathhouse setup is irrelevant. We stayed for 3 nights and the staff was very helpful. We were especially pleased to see that they escort you to your site and in our case they helped us back in which expedited the setup process for us. Sites were very clean but were just shy of bordering on tight. Some of the fire rings are not ideally located and can be a little close to your camper. There is a blurb in the pamphlet they give you that says not to move the fire rings without consulting staff so it sounds like in the past other guests have also found that their fire location was sometimes less than ideal. It was usually pretty easy to get ahold of someone who worked there because they were constantly driving around to make sure everything was ok on the grounds. Some of the sites seemed pretty level but others are on a bit of a hill so to level your camper you will have to jack up one end of it a good amount. Also, it's worth noting that their transient sites don't have sewer hookup which is a real pain if you're planning on staying more than a couple of days and want to use the bathroom/shower in your camper. However, their dump station was one of the cleanest we've ever seen. There are sites right next to it though so that's probably why they keep it so immaculate. We did hear comments that they had plans to start adding sewer to many sites but then we were also told by a staff member that they were going to convert many of their sites so month only reservations so maybe that's why. If the comment about the monthly reservations is true I'm sure that will be good for the business owners but it will stink for those of us who aren't retired and don't have the luxury of taking a month off from work. The pool was nice and looked really well maintained but since there was so much to do in the area and we were only staying a few days we didn't get to use it. Cell phone service worked here with strong T-Mobile signal. Hallelujah! What a blessing when you're searching for a good place to eat or something fun to do in the area. We drove around the campground and it had one of the largest offerings of tent sites that I've ever seen. So if you like to camp in a tent or pop-up and you're looking for a site in a popular tourist destination then Dixon's has you covered. One last thing, Dixon's does offer late checkout if needed and if your site is available. This is a really nice option to have but be prepared to pay an additional fee for it. I assume this has to do with the campground being located in a highly coveted area because I've never been charged for a late checkout at a campground. I would advise that if you have any reservation or late checkout questions though that you ask to speak to the manager or owner. You won't always get a consistent or definitive response if you don't. Overall we loved Dixon's and it's a great value. If we can manage to get reservations next season we'll definitely be back.

    We have made fire!

We were at Short Sands allllll day, and didn't want to leave for CT. All the hotels were booked, and anything open was outrageously out of our reach. Then I remembered Dixon's, where we'd camped some years ago while staying for a summer weekend (tenting). We'd already had the bed in the back of the van (I have a chronic, progressive pain condition that causes me much trouble, and we had the bed in case I needed to lay down on the long drive to/from Maine), so why not?? They had a few tent spots open, and off we went to check in. The rate was incredibly reasonable, and the ladies in the office were soooo friendly and helpful. They thought to ask me if I needed to be within a close distance to the bathrooms (my mobility is limited), and put us on a nice flat surface directly across from the potties & showers. SO sweet!! When we went to the site, it was clean and quiet. The showers (which are heated--you adjust the warmth) are 50 cents for 5 minutes, and they are the cleanest I've seen in any campground we've been to. The same goes for the bathrooms. These people are on top of things!! The place is well-monitored, as we saw a gentleman driving around a cart, asking if anyone needed anything, checking the bathrooms and garbage, etc. We felt totally safe and comfortable. We had a lovely little fire, were visited by an owl (just flew to a branch above us and watched for a bit), and went to bed. Had a solid night's sleep, and were back at the beach in the morning, happy to extend our time away another day. Thank you, Dixon staff! You were part of a wonderful weekend away that we desperately needed!

I recently was back in town and decided to have a nostalgic stay at the campground. I called the office about a week and a half before I planned on visiting and they only had one site (#21) left. I told the manager Jack, that I'd take it! Initially only planning on visiting Tues thru Thurs, they require 4 nights minimum stay in the summer, with the reservation starting on a Sunday. So I reserved Sun thru Thurs, which was the only way to guarantee the site. My other option was to call that day I planned on arriving and hoping/praying the site was still available. It turned out better this way because I just started my vaca two days earlier. Only way to make a reservation is to call during office hours, 9am to 6pm. Both the check-in and check-out time is at 11am. The campground itself isn't that big, and I would guess there's no more than 10 sites available for weekly rentals, as it's mostly seasonal trailers/campers that occupy the remainder of the sites the whole season the campground is open. They open for the season around May 15th, and close for winter around Oct 15th. Site #21 is nestled between two permanent trailer sites, and sits low on the terrain. This means it will flood a little when it rains, but seems to dry out pretty quickly once the rain stops. It is fairly shaded by the pine trees, so it's was nice & cool during our stay. There is one main bathhouse with a men's bathroom (showers inside), a women's bathroom, and a separate women's shower room. There are also two individual bathrooms located behind the office. The showers are $.25 for 5 minutes of shower time. It's just enough time for a quick shower, but bring a 2nd quarter if you think you need a bit more time. The water is hot, which is nice as I'm used to showering w/ warm to cool water at most campgrounds, and they've added curtains to create a changing area outside each shower (new addition from when I was a kid). If camping in a tent, bring an air mattress or padding to sleep on as the ground is hard, and rocky. Every site has your standard fire ring & picnic table. If you need water for cooking, head up to the bathhouse and use the stainless steel sink outside next to the ladies room. This is also a good place to wash your dishes. Pricing is $35 per site per day for 2 ppl and one vehicle. Additional adults are an extra $10/day, kids (ages 5-17) are an extra $5/day, and parking for extra vehicles is also an extra $5/day. Cash or check only. No pets allowed. Ice sold in the office is cheaper & the bag is bigger than the ones sold up the street at the Shore Road Market (red building at fork in road). The office also sells firewood, and some individual canned soda, bottled water, candy bars & ice cream bars. Be advised there are lots of skunks (which hasn't changed since my childhood). They won't bother you, but be aware at dusk/night where you're walking and make sure to toss your trash in the dumpster each day to help avoid an overnight visit. This campground is located right along the ocean and a river. The main beach area is pretty small at high tide, but becomes a nice big area at low tide. Just bring water shoes because the ground is rocky & covered in shells/crabs at low tide. The tide also changes quick so make sure to keep an eye on your belongings when it's coming in, to make sure they don't get swept out. There's also a smaller beach closer to the bridge, and is accessible via the road just next to the office. People still jump off the bridge at high tide, which they've been doing since I was a kid. If you head towards the ocean side of the campground, where the road loops, there's another pathway that leads to the rocks overlooking the ocean & Nubble Light lighthouse. Just watch your step cause the rocks can get slippery at low tide! Also, make sure to stay off other people's sites. If you don't, they'll be sure to let you know it's 'private property'. A great little campground to stay at, with beautiful ocean views! Would def recommend!

In the town there are a few campgrounds. Won't give them any credence but this year was our first year here... Now mind you the sites aren't huge but adequate after all you are in the middle of town! Most of the trailers are seasonal and a few are tents and some weeklies. The sites are very well kept up, tiled bathrooms 25¢ for 5 minutes and cleaned 2 times a day my daughter said it was plenty of time for a hot shower! My family arrived in their pop-up to join us for a week and were to camp next to us and turn their trailer and face us which was nice camping together! As some of the complaints said no individual fire pits but if tent site is not in use across from us we were able to use it for a fire one night. The huge + for this place is it is in town very clean & walking distance to all amenities... ocean, restaurants, bars, gift shops, laundry about 10 minutes away. With very nice owners I would definitely stay here again.
