First time I got Dixie Joes I was very impressed. Decided to get a 1/2 bushel of number one males yesterday. When I got there the crabs had been sitting out long enough to not even be warm. I called at 12:38 for a 2:30 pick up. The box said 2:15 but it was obvious they'd been done way longer. I arrived at 2:31. Got home and I could tell these were not true number ones. They were very small and very light. I'd say about 50% were number ones. I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt. Then we got started eating. The were definitely water logged and I believe undercooked. I ate 1 and opened 3. All the same. The under belly's still had blue coloring on them. The meat was not firm it was watery and almost slimy. I knew I made a mistake after about an hour and being stuck in the bathroom with severe stomach cramps, nausea and diarrhea. My first thought was to call the store. Honestly I was too sick to deal with the owner who clearly doesn't handle complaints well. After finally being able to hold my head up and stay out of the bathroom, I figured I'd call this morning but they are closed. . So instead I decided to leave an honest review, I'll Throw away $116 in bad seafood and simply eat the cost. My suggestion, check your crabs before leaving, don't just trust the reviews. Mistakes happen. If they aren't steaming we you arrive, don't accept them. Lesson learned here. read more

Great little crab shack - literally . This place is a small shack behind a home. They are typically only open weekends during the season. They offer a variety of seafood items as well as the famous hard shell blue crabs. The other items include oysters, shrimp, clams , frog legs and more. I was there for the crabs - today they had #1 jimmys , # 2 's and females . I ordered ahead , because this place is BUSY !! My crabs were ready when I arrived but I did have to wait in line to pick up and pay. They were nice solid crabs - cooked and spiced to perfection ! The crabs were fresh and delicious. ! Check them out on Facebook - it seems they us FB to post their shipments and prices since they fluctuate weekly. They often sell out so better to call ahead with an order. Oh my word, did we eat good. We got steamed sweet heavy blue jimmys, the crab boil, crab dip (to die for) hush puppies (one of my favorites anywhere), wings, and banana pudding. I swear, Joey could cook anything. Hubby dug in to the shrimp and pretty much stayed with it. They were meaty and good. The andouille sausage was spicy, as expected, but addicting as heck. I personally couldn't get enough of the sweet corn on the cob, or those hush puppies. Everything was flavorful, including the potatoes. Grandson enjoyed the wings too. I should have been full from that succulent crab dip, but I forged on. Dixie was helpful with any questions about anything. Hubby & Grandson were pleased to get Dixie's Homemade Banana Pudding (always a favorite). We'll be back. Yum! read more

Recently found this place and got a bushel #1s for the first time today. The crabs were pretty good. A few over cooked which made them very mushy, and a few on small/light side, but 95% were cooked to perfection. The one issue I have is the seasoning, seems they use a lot if black pepper. I generally like my crabs seasoned heavily but the black pepper, which I generally like on food, was a bit much for my liking on crabs.. Outside of that I would recommend this place. They seem to be priced below other crabs spots in the area, and the product is very similar. read more

Today my wife and I made our first visit to Dixie Joe's Crab Shack...the first of many I hope! Dixie Joe's is literally in the owners back yard. We knew we were in for fresh crab when we pulled up and saw them sorting the live crab out back and smelled the wonderful seasonings and aroma of fresh seafood cooking. The smells and quaint setting did not disappoint! The employee up front (a very nice lady with true southern hospitality) greeted us immediately, explained their menu, and then took our order. She was just as kind to every customer who walked in the door as she was to us. The owner, Dixie, brought our food out to us as we relaxed in the shade at the picnic table out front. A few minutes later she came back to see if we where happy with everything, but I was too busy eating to answer with any other than a thumbs up. My soft shell crab was lightly battered, seasoned perfectly, and steaming hot. The bun was fresh, the fries were nice, crispy and hot, and the hush puppies were among the best I have ever had (being from the South that's saying something). My wife had a crab cake sandwich that was every bit as good as the soft shell crab. There was far more meat that filler and it too was perfectly seasoned--not too much or too little, but just right. Dixie Joe's is only open three days a week and they do a brisk business. So, if you want to make sure they haven't sold out or to get in and out quickly call ahead. read more

My go to crab place in Virginia. You can get some nice sized crabs for a good price my only complaint is the seasoning has too much black pepper and that messes up the taste for me. Ask for light seasoning if you don't like a lot of black pepper. I had a shockingly horrific experience from Dixie Joe's recently. As a repeat customer, I trusted to be able to place an order and actually receive what I ordered. My order consisted of one order of a dozen #1s and another order of half a dozen #2s all heavy seasoning. I was in such a good mood and in a rush picking up my order that I merely made a cursory inspection when I picked up my crabs and paid for them including a tip. What a mistake!!! Upon full inspection at my destination, what I received was all together different from what I ordered. The bag of #1s had number 1s on the top of crabs and 5 number 2s on the bottom. The other bag was NOT heavily seasoned nor were they warm like the number 1 bag. In fact they seemed like some casually thrown in left over crabs. As I was no longer close to the store I called the store and was put on with the owner who made it very clear that any kind of customer service was clearly out the door along with a big F- U. After explaining the situation, she became extremely belligerent and insulting attempting to tell me that I didn't know the difference between #1s and #2s and how she personally measured them blah blah blah. I attempted to let her know that there was a distinct difference in what I had between her alleged no 1 crabs versus the true number 1s in the bag. There were even OBVIOUS visible and weight differences that could be clearly demonstrated not only within the same bag of alleged no 1s but also in comparison with the separate bag of designated #2s. And furthermore, I too was no novice at selecting blue crabs - as if it were rocket science or something. Even more, my point of emphasis was that ALL of my number 1s should have, at the very least, looked like all of the other number 1s in the SAME bag, since, after all, this is what I PAID for up front INCLUDING tip. I even understand maybe 1 or 2 crabs being off, but there were simply too many to let this go. However, by this point I have an even greater problem with her demeaning and insulting attitude. Surely we could have come to some sort of resolution instead of her cavalier response. She eventually simply cut me off, told me to "have a nice day" and hung up the phone. Well Ms. Owner, your wish is granted and you've lost a customer including all the other referrals I used to give your establishment to the loads of people I know in the area looking to purchase crabs. I don't care how good your crabs may taste whatever size they may be. This is definitely a BUYER BEWARE situation especially if you have a problem or disagreement with your purchase. There will definitely be no customer satisfaction or an attempt to appease paying customers. What's more, I am now seeing other reviews that corroborate my similar experience. Even more the owner replies with the same F-U, I am right, you are always wrong response. It is obvious that paying customers and/or their satisfaction is not the owners concern. And whether these are her actual feelings, this is exactly what she conveys. read more

Great little spot located in a residential neighborhood behind the owners home. Just drive an follow the signs and find a parking space out front. We got half a bushel of males an two pounds of shrimp! They offer a huge selection of seafood. There prices were better than the other local crab man in town. The best part was not having to drive into Fredericksburg an into all tje chaos of traffic to get crabs. Just a nice quiet drive through the woods! Crabs were great! I have bought several bushels each summer and have always been happy with the crabs, packed with meat, good size and great taste. Was really excited to try this place, after looking at all the reviews. Notices on the way home, that the crabs didn't smell as fresh, as usual. When I started eating them, the crabs were saturated with water, and the meat was mushy!! Next day, after putting the crabs in the frig, my whole house was stinking! It was clear that these crabs were no good, and we started contacting the owner, to see what we could do about the situation. We received very poor customer service. We got crabs here on July 20th. They were delicious, cooked to order and meaty. We called 2 days ahead to place our order. They were hot and ready for pickup right on time. Despite the excessive heat that day all the staff were friendly, courteous and accommodating. The hush puppies are great. Can't wait to go back and try some of the seafood platters. What a little jewel we found here!! Being seeing gobs of Facebook posts on how great this place is, and boy, oh boy, were they right!!! We drove there on a wim, and pull up to this really nice looking shack. Go inside and the friendly order tracker we ever met. Wife has never had craw fish and was asking her what they taste like. Two seconds later, our lady order taker walks to back to have actually cook one for my wife.
