This place is amazing. When I lived out of state, every time I traveled to Richmond I would make a point to stop here. Now that I'm living in Richmond I still make a point to stop here! I've picked up some great things here for amazing prices. LGBT friendly, and they've done so much to support this community. Staff is super friendly, prices are low. Check out the tags and the signs each day because the discounts are always changing. I believe they even have like 25 cent day on certain items. They just got their floors replaced and the place has a new layout, I'm really digging it and can't wait to go back again soon. I was turned away three times before I finally called to ask if they were accepting donations today. They said they were. When I arrived (as always, before 2:00) they said I couldn't drop off my items. I informed the worker I called and they finally allowed me to unload my truck (by myself) while turning away several more donors. While I love the mission, please post that you need to call ahead and bring someone to help unload. read more

I wanted soooo bad to give this place a chance. Except now I'm out a good $80 for a desk that was sold out from under me, and from renting a truck to pick up the second desk on a day that they closed early with no change on their public hours. I appreciate them offering me a second desk in exchange for the first one they could not find, but as of right now I still do not have a desk, and I don't think I'll ever be shopping here again. read more

We stop every time we visit RVA. As a teen I remember it pointed rainbow and seeing it from the road. Now it's had a makeover, and the inside has had some face lift work recently, itself. I don't live close so the bigger, awesome finds, I usually have to part ways with! The shop supports the LGBTQ community, and continues to have our support right back! One of the best thrift stores I have ever been to.They have everything from books, to furniture, to paintings. And soooo much more! The staff is also very friendly and helpful. It is always fun going to the store even just to look around. The prices are also amazingly cheap. Some of the things you can get there are an absolute gem. We got an armchair from their that looked as good as new! It is absolutely worth it to get furniture from there. The shipping only costs around $40 and it doesn't matter how much furniture you buy it will still be around $40. They are also very careful one what gets donated. If anything has a tear, they don't sell it. I can honestly stay in the store the whole day and not get bored. The place is also LGBTQ friendly which is a huge place. Overall I love this place and absolutely recommend it to anyone. This place is amazing!! read more

I had three options for getting rid of my good quality electronics, clothes and shoes. I could have sold them on Craigslist, given them to Goodwill or Diversity Thrift. As someone who is supportive of the LGBT cause, I decided to donate them to Diversity Thrift. When I arrived at the store, there was no one to help me carry the five large boxes, when I asked, they just told me to put them inside the building. There was neither a word of thanks nor receipt for my donations. It was extremely disappointing. I won't be donating to Diversity Thrift in the future. read more

Diversity is great. Yep. It has Thirft Store Smell but who cares? Isn't that the best part of a thrift store? They have clothing, dishes, tchotches, linens, electronics, furniture, basically everything. I'm super paranoid about buying secondhand furniture since the outbreaks of bedbugs in Richmond have gotten worse but I've never had a problem with anything I've gotten at Diversity. They support the GCCR (gay community center of Richmond) and they're great. I don't know if the people who work there are employees or volunteers. They mark pieces that are broken as "as is" so you generally don't have to worry about buying a lemon here. In fact, my hand mixer that I got here for 5$ is still running 7 years later. My only complaint is that they always have springform pans missing the bottoms or sides. Perhaps someone here thinks that they're supposed to be sold that way. If you're reading this Diversity, they're not! A springform is bottom and hoop sides. They're useless separate. OMG, please, please sell me one that's complete. I'm dying here without cheesecake. They delivery for the furniture and by the same token if you have furniture or large groups of stuff they'll pick it up. Delivery to my place was 45$. I don't know if it's a variable scale depending on where you live or 45$ flat. Two friendly, incredibly hot young guys delivered my piece. I don't know if they're allowed to accept tips but if they're good to you don't they deserve it? read more

5 minutes being in this place my eyes started to get irritated and my nose super dry- it's SO dusty and with that being said, a lot of the stuff in there is musty too. not many clothes to look through, there's a lot of glass cups and mugs so if that's what you're looking for go ahead, but half of them are plastic and tbh, ugly. the workers there are super sweet, kudos to them for being able to stay in that dust bowl for more than an hour read more

I love Diversity Thrift- like any large thrift store their inventory ebbs and flows, so keeping checking back because you never know what you are going to find! They have a huge selection of furniture and clothing, plus rooms filled with books and electronic equipment, etc. My favorite find from Diversity was my entertainment center, which is a mammoth solid wood piece with glass doors, in perfect condition... we paid $60 for it at Diversity, and it's probably the best quality piece of furniture we own to this day. I've also seen some furniture in sore need of some love there (and priced accordingly), so if you are into DIY/reupholstering/craft projects you can get some good material here... I also LOVE LOVE LOVE the people at Diversity. Everyone is friendly and helpful. Many of them work on a volunteer basis, as Diversity is a non-profit that raises money for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. In fact, they run bingo in the Gay Community Center of Richmond (which is in the same building as the thrift store) and it's super fun! read more

Usually when I browse in here, I go in thinking I won't find anything. Generally I do actually leave without finding anything, but fully enjoy the search. I tend to gravitate toward the books and have found some cheap reads in the past. It's a good store, not fantastic, but a good time waster if you feel the need. Look for the big rainbow on the building or trucks, you can see it from I95. First time I went here the owner asked if I were in "the family".. lol I'm kinda slow and didnt realize he was asking if I were gay... although I'm not, I do enjoy project runway, splashing in puddles, and Magnum PI reruns. A very large space with a huge variety of odds and ends. Several rooms are dedicated to books which was cool. A lot of the items could stand to be wiped down. The Customer service was iffy. While I love the mission of Diversity, which supports the gay community in RIchmond, and I love the easy-to-spot rainbow sign (you can see it from the interstate), I haven't ever had much luck here. It's my "almost found a treasure" store. Everything I see that I like has a "sold" ticket on it. I did think the rugs were overpriced here, but things like dishes and lamps were pretty spot on for a thrift store. But, if you're into thrifting and antiquing, half of the fun is the thrill of the hunt and you have to check back on a regular basis to see what new stuff has come in. I called Diversity Thrift to ask about a donation of several furniture items (8). I was asked to provide pictures of all the items, which I emailed, and they said they wanted all of them. An appt was scheduled for 10/1 at 10am. THEY NEVER SHOWED UP. And, they have completely ghosted me. I emailed them and I called and left a message for them and haven't heard a word from anyone. I'm really disappointed because I specifically wanted to donate to them. I'll look for another organization. Don't waste your time with them. read more

This huge store full of really everything you can imagine. Much of what is brought in comes from donations from the community. Best of all, your donation is tax deductible. I can't tell you how many times I have dropped off stuff that has come out of packing to move or unpacking from a move. it is great to know that my items are being used to raise money to help the GLBT community. What have I found here? Let's see, I have found a few mid-century pieces, a set of old wooden shutters, a head board, and other items my shopped out brain can't recall. I would say that if you are going to find the diamond in the rough you need to go several times a week because the best items sell quickly. Best of all, Diversity Thrift will come and pick up large items from your home for you. I have gotten rid of large appliances like refrigerators and old huge TVs that weigh as much as a Volkswagen. Give them a call next time you want to get rid of a big item, they will be happy to arrange a pick up. My only beef about them is that they tend to be on the pricey side and they tend to lack organization. Since it is all volunteer, I guess I am not surprised. One can't be too hard on them as I can't imagine dealing with the non stop ebb and flow of merchandise they have to.... read more

There are about 7 rooms here. One for men's clothes, One for women's clothes, One for linens, two for Books with records in one of them. The largest room has furniture. The furniture room is the largest they have period pieces and 40, 50, & up for furniture. There is the check out room that had dvds, vhs', & jewelry at the counter. They aren't overwhelmed with vintage, They have vintage and current pieces, more current pieces than not. They have prices in dresses at 5.25 and over. The shirts and cardigans are 3.25 & 2.25. They have sales on particular colored price tags. There are about 6 different colored tags. The men's clothes aren't much different. Not a lot of vintage and far too many t shirts. They have a couple of wedding dresses too. It's worth a checking out if it's your first time, If you become a regular that's awesome. .. but I may just stick to my salvation army, The prices are better on half priced Wednesdays. read more

Maybe I caught them on a bad shipment? Furniture department leaves much to be desired. I'd overheard tales from locals who discovered "killer [furniture] finds" at Diversity, but as I wandered I couldn't help questioning whether those individuals simply lack style or have never actually run across thrift prices. Tawdry end tables, chipped and dented dressers, hutch's with missing veneer, all with one similarity; inflated price tags. Craigslist is a better bet if you're in no rush. $185 for an uneven and loosely jointed oriental tansu cabinet is a bit rich for my blood. On a positive note, though, the clothing sections look promising. Today I was a woman on a mission for furniture, but I can see myself coming back to browse both men's and women's departments. read more

I always leave Diversity Thrift completely disappointed. I think they are over priced, and pretty poorly organized. It's definitely the best thrift store in the area, but that is not saying much compared to the other ones in the area like Fan Thrift or the nearby Salvation Army. I would love to support them more because I am totally down for their cause but I never find anything worth buying there. It's mainly over priced junk in my opinion. For people looking for great finds and good deals I would suggest a short drive to some of the other thrift stores farther away from the VCU area. read more

Although I usually leave diversity thrift empty handed, i love to hit it up every now and again to kill time. I have found a couple great pieces of clothing and frames, there's always some cool looking furniture and $3 shoes. The furniture always seems a little pricey for me, but i need to get used to the fact that furniture is expensive, and you cant get garage sale prices at stores. i also LOVE the fact that if something isn't priced they will price it at the register, whatever the cashier thinks its worth, usually much cheaper than it would normally be. Nothings more annoying than finding a gem and it being unpriced and having them not sell it to you (fan thrift). read more

One of the best thrifts in RVA and funds go back to the local LBGTQ community versus a corporation. They have rooms and rooms full of clothing and have bought furniture their as well. My kids LOVE thrifting since they know they can get so much more -- from clothes to decor to whatever they find. And being in the city there are often more quirky items donated which makes it even more fun. Love this store. We donate and shop seasonally. read more

This place USED to be a great place for furniture and other hidden gems but over the last year or so.... every time I've visited I encounter only items in poor condition (worn out clothing and shoes, broken housewares and the furniture has been "not so much"). This is a pretty decent thrift store. It's definitely a treasure hunt so not for the casual thrifter. You can easily spend hours here picking through. I usually come for the furniture or housewares. I'm a big DIYer and love the opportunity to give something new life. The parking lot is usually full when I come but can usually find a spot on the street. I love that the post the current color discount on the wall above the furniture for a quick check-in. I recommend coming often! read more

Loves The selection is bomb! I NEVER go in there and not find anything. The sales. I like that almost everything is on sale in a sense. Whether its 75, 50, or 25% off. Yays The staff, they leave you alone but are always friendly and help when needed. Fitting rooms. Only 2 though. Furniture selection, not that its bad but a few years ago it was better. Nays Its a thrift store so be prepared to sneeze every two seconds because of the dust. Always feel like a shower after I leave them. I soo don't like how they staple the tags on the clothes. Diverse threads, spreads and treads at this thoroughbred thrift. As an avid thrifter, I consider Diversity to be as spontaneous and diverse as it gets. There are tons of random items to consider as you saunter through the selections, sifting 'diamonds' out of the dirt. Most of my kooky coffee cups were found here, as well as my mason jars and 6-paneled Japanese room divider (they took my best offer). I don't really know what to look for when I go because it is inconsistent with its jems. The furniture offers a wide variety items at hit or miss pricing. Some things are terribly over-priced, like a cabinet that a dog chewed on, while an exceptional trunk or shelf might get unnoticed and find its way into my house (I win). The clothing can be very sparse (for men) and the library leaves you looking at 'how to' books, but it changes daily. Best of all, every dime you spend you give to a community that could use your support -everyone wins! It would do you good to forget Goodwill - will you already? read more

We're huge fans of Diversity and have shopped with and donated to them for years. The staff is friendly and eager to help. We did, however, experience a horrifying event that we feel we must share. We were considering buying a sofa and popped into Diversity to see if they had anything that was in excellent condition, although we hesitate to buy such things used. We saw a sofa that looked brand new, didn't have any stains or tears, etc. We decided to check it out (a necessary step to check for infestations of any type) and removed the seat cushions. We pulled on the strap for the sleeper feature and saw a bedbug nest. What seemed like dozens of bedbugs and their exoskeletons were all piled together between the mattress and the back of the sofa. We informed the staff and they removed the sofa and swept its former place with a household broom. I'm not sure what good the broom did. In any case, this sofa was clearly not inspected after it was picked up. It should not have been donated, either; the person who donated it surely knew it had bugs and was evil enough to donate it anyway; they probably just didn't want to dispose of it themselves. I can't stress enough how important it is to avoid buying used sofas and chairs. The only way to get rid of bedbugs is through a professional pest control person; the stuff you get a home improvements stores do not work. Professional pyrethrins are unreliable at best for bedbug extermination. The cost for professional treatment is $1000-$2500. Do not make the mistake of thinking that an item is bug-free just because it looks nice or new. Avoid the hassles and expense. Also, Virginia laws are almost nil when it comes to bedbugs. Be an informed, curious consumer and protect yourself. read more

I'm a big fan of diversity thrift. You never know what you're going to find. There are times when I stop by and walk away with nothing and other times I find just the gem I was hoping for. As with all thrift stores, it's mostly the luck of the draw. Over the past three years, I've seen the store grow increasingly more organized but there are still a few rooms (like electronics and games/sporting goods) that could use an overhaul. The staff are not overly helpful or friendly but neither are they rude. There are frequent sales and free home pickup is available for large donations. I haven't figured out how this place manages to get so many mint / close to mint condition furniture pieces, but they do. Aside from being a great place to scope furniture (even if you are picky about how your furniture looks, such as myself), they offer a wide selection of clothing and misc. items (like most thrift stores). An extra star is for the fact that profits go toward supporting human rights / GLBT causes.
