Who knew Seattle had such amazing little fabric shops tucked away in its neighborhoods?? Not me -- I have sadly been relying on places like etsy for my fashion fabrics for wayyy too long. No longer! I dropped in two weeks ago and was floored by the selection of silks, linens, shirting cottons, wools, and knits. Are you looking for a Calvin Klein wool? Silk duponi? French cotton? Italian shirting cotton? She has it. If you're looking for a sequined knit, a sheer crepe de chine, a lightweight wool crepe... she also has it. Frankly I'm amazed at the size and quality of her selection, especially for the small size of the storefront. The owner has all the long 60" rolls of silk and linen up against one wall, which makes for a beautiful display and shopping experience. You can get a sense of the scale of the pattern as well as the weight, and drape of the fabric without ever having to make a scene unrolling and clumsily holding up a bolt of fabric. I found a beautiful silk that was patterned with the NY city skyline, and have been dreaming of it ever since. My first visit, I found a beautiful patterned french cotton remnant that I sewed into a beautiful apron for my cousin...unlike most quilting cottons, it's the kind of patterned cotton that doesn't have a discernible repeat, and it has thrilled each and every one of my friends who has come over and seen it on my sewing table. My next visit I brought a friend, and she found a beautiful textured black nettle fabric from Nepal that will make an amazing statement skirt -- it has a subtle gold sheen to it and looks just like something you'd find at Anthropologie. Even better, it was only $8/yard. That's right, in addition to stocking high end $40/yd fabrics, the shop has a lot of amazing options for those on a budget, too. The owner has even thoughtfully packaged "made boxes" where you can buy a prepacked box of fabric and notions that you will need to take one of the beginner classes at Made. What a great way to introduce someone to sewing -- now they don't need to worry about picking the wrong fabric type or yardage for their project! Additionally, the owner is super thoughtful. I found a snakeskin print that I liked that I thought might work for a Halloween costume, if it came in green. The owner called the manufacturer for me, determined that it didn't, and remembered to tell me so on my next visit in. She even offered to keep an eye open for me on her next trip to the LA fashion district. Ladies and gentlemen, you CANNOT beat that service! read more

Very cute fabric shop. Looks kind of rustic and artisanal upon arrival, and has some really interesting fabrics that are perfect for higher end garments and such. I bought a gorgeous shimmery Italian cotton here for my wedding corset and it was worth the price- a lovely material that worked beautifully. The gal who helped me find this perfect material was very kind too, nothing snooty about her- and she was just al around awesome. District Fabric is just the kind of fabric store that Seattle was craving. The set up is similar to Britex in San Francisco. I like that the majority of the fabrics are on the long rolls so there is no center fold to deal with! And the selection is stunning....lots of super cool and many fabrics for making soooo many things! Great selection of knits, denims, cotton shirtings, wool, and some fun funky finds too. I was looking for some wool to make some simple infinity scarves and stumbled upon District Fabric! Pluses: Amazing wool selection from Italy (and inexpensive compared to what you pay online) Great selection of independent and unique patterns (even a plus size brand!) Silks are abundant (although I was not looking for silk) Owner is amazing and so helpful! I overheard her talking to a customer about how to ship to Africa of all places. Minus: Parking - always a minus in Fremont, especially on a Sunday! I actually didn't have many minuses but felt I had to add one since I already had pluses. read more

Five stars if you get the owner, who is extremely personable and nice. Their fabrics are well-curated and reasonably priced. If you work on your project right away and know you love the fabric, get your fill ASAP. I have been lucky to get the owner to re-order a fabric, which may not always be possible. The assistant isn't as motivated to make nice. I'll probably not go as often because I do like to chit chat about my projects and fabric choices. Not a full length discussion mind you but I find the ladies at Nancy's to be more open to that. If I want a less personable experience, I'll save it for *shudder* Joann's. Awesome place for garment/clothing sewers! When I first walked in, I thought, "This place is too small, I'll never find what I want". I was totally wrong! I spent at least an hour here. District Fabric is all garment/clothes fabrics, no quilting or home decorating stuff. The whole store is stuff I want to sew! Great selection of shirting fabrics, denims, wool, leather, and fancy dress fabrics like silk and sequins. Really fashionable fabrics (not like stodgy JoAnn's selection), yet decent prices. The cheapest bolts around $5-6 a yard which is very reasonable, most probably in the 8-12 range, and the some more expensive at $17-20+. Service was excellent. The gal working there (owner?) was very knowledgable, helpful and fun to chat with. I will definitely be back!! read more

The kind of French silks, Japanese cottons and Italian wool that used to start wars. It makes you feel antiquated, like some kind of 19th century human being, to imagine your financial ruin possible in bolts of $35/yard psychedelic silk, $50/yard silk/wool paisley, a popular artist's limited run of synthetics. The owner is quiet, eager to help and charmed to find another of her kind - somebody who values/nerds out for these fabrics as much as she does. Before I knew this store existed, I bought the same fabrics online at a considerable markup. Even with sales tax, District Fabric is reasonably priced. They now carry notions (they've got incredible ribbons, for example - works of art in themselves) and high art patterns for those who sew with them. As a new freestyle sewer, I'm always staggered by the variety. I love this store. I've never met another one like it. I can never move. read more

What a cute shop! I stopped in to get some tulle for my daughter's halloween costume and found just what I was looking for... and then some. Just stopped into this darling shop today after reading all the great reviews! I live an hour north of Seattle, and just happened to be down for the day so I stopped in. We don't have a lot of great fabric stores where I live, so it was quite a treat to have access to all the wonderful fabrics in this shop! As someone that is new to sewing (literally just got my sewing machine in the mail today), I was so inspired by the fabrics in this shop, thinking of all the awesome projects I wanted to get started on. I don't think it matters that this shop is small, it's what inside that counts. I often get anxiety going into the larger department stores, too many options to choose from! I felt totally comfortable in this shop, and was so happy to see all the imported fabrics from Europe! How cool to get a few yards of 100% cotton from Italy? Totally reasonable prices, in fact I was surprised as a few of the prices were lower than I would have thought they'd be. Obviously the imported fabrics are a little more spendy, but great for me as I only needed half a yard for sewing tea towels and such. I will definitely be back! In fact I can't wait for my next paycheck so I can head back down to District Fabric! Also, the gal (I think she is the owner) working was super nice and helpful and great to talk to. A garment sewist's delight! This is the stuff you would be on the hunt for if you were shopping in the NYC garment district. Actually, this is one of the best stores I have visited, including several in the NYC garment district. The prices are reasonable, with a large number of selections $10/yard or less and very high quality (much better than the big name chain stores). The fabric is nicely laid out and grouped by fabric type. If I lived in Seattle, I would definitely be a regular. On that note, they also offer shipping for a $5 flat fee! So you can have your goodies shipped and not have to worry about going over the checked bag weight limit (this was a concern for me!). Oh, and there is a shop puppy! read more

Small but good selection. All nice quality, good prices, friendly staff that was both willing to chat and willing to let me walk around alone and touch all the fabrics. Helpful advice on picking yardage (I didn't have a pattern with me to judge how much I needed). Definitely garment fabric vs quilting, which I'm okay with because us non-quilters have a harder time finding shops geared towards us. They had some indie patterns (Sewaholic, Named, Colette, Papercut and Thread Theory). Very small selection of trims and thread. They had denim, rayon, silks, lace, velvet, european knits, Italian wool, lace, spandex/lycra, Japanese shirtings, eyelet, and others that I can't remember. She even made time to pull out a map and help me find a local brewery. Would go back in a heart beat. read more

So I was so excited that there was a new fabric store in town. I was on their site last night and went to their twitter page and checked out all of the pictures. So cute. I went there bright and early this morning in the rain and they weren't open. My fault so I decided to come back later and was super excited. I even posted their opening on my FB. So I go back, struggle to find parking, march over in the pouring rain and guess what! I walk in and the owner is chatting it up with 2 customers. She doesn't say "hello" or "welcome" or anything. I spent 20 minutes in her shop and I don't even get acknowledged. What the Hell right! I"m going through all of her cute little fabrics and never once get asked if I need help. Instead I end up listening to her talk about her history in the theatre business, her life as a student, her tours of fabric stores in Chicago and LA. And then I get to hear all aboutf he newr friends stories too. I just got awarded "Customer Service All Star" at my work. I've worked in fashion design, 3 bridal boutiques and a fabric store for 10 years. I guarantee you we always said Hello right away. Fabric stores are intimidating as it is. Can't you even ask a person if they need help. She didn't even say thanks for looking after 20 minutes of digging through the piles of rolls on the tables. Good luck staying open. I'm not coming back. I'll order online. What a shame. I love small business and I will always shop local if I can. read more

Yes, yes, and yes. Delicious fabric, and not a calico or upholstery roll in sight -- it's all for making clothes. Quality and selection found nowhere else in Seattle. Big enough to have just what you're looking for, small enough that the staff knows where everything is. I was deeply surprised by the very reasonable prices. I was very excited to come to visit this fabric store. I live in North Dakota for school, and am currently home for vacation. I planned a date with my mom and grandmother to go fabric shopping. Searching up local Seattle fabric shops, District Fabrics was the first location to pop up. We arrived at District Fabrics and I tried to say hello to the gal at the counter. No response. We were in the store for about ten minutes admiring the wonderful textiles, but not one word from the woman working. It definitely turned us off from purchasing anything. I love this place! It's a true gem for anyone looking for fashion fabric. The selection is surprising large and well curated and prices are very reasonable for the quality they sell. I was able to get 100% silk charmeuse for around $20/yard regular price. Everywhere else that I looked in the city was charging $40-60 for similar quality silk. This store is a nice little addition to the Fremont neighborhood. After reading the reviews on yelp, I decided to drag my boyfriend with so that I could get my hands on some fabric for some projects that I wanted. The store in itself is pretty ok, borderline nice. There's a VERY small selection of organic cottons, and only one line of pretty cool prints. For the rest of the fabric, I really didn't care for it, but could tell that it was of good quality. I did not, however, appreciate that the owner was pretty 'eh' about it. As Erica R. reviewed, " And in response to the review below complaining about service -- I actually don't want to be pestered while I shop". The owner was pretty aloof, and the reason why I go to boutiques instead of large chain stores is because I want a more personalized and intimate service. I would've really appreciated the owner at least making a round and letting us know that she was available, and her being more friendly. Overall, i's not that impressive, and service was ok. It's definitely close to my home, so in a pinch I'd come here again.
