What I got was something completely different and I spent 5 hours there. When I was put under the hair dryer (with bleach in my hair), Liz started working with another client and I was sitting there for over an hour. I was not happy at all so I told her I didn't like it and she told me it was what I asked for. I told her the picture is an ombre and she told me thats what I had. I explained an ombre or balyage on my hair would go black to brown to blonde. My hair went straight black to blonde with no blonde and explained she gave me highlights more than an ombre. She told me to come in the following week (4 days later) and I did. She explained to me that most people want what I got so she assumed that's what I meant. I have spots in my hair and it looked like I had gotten my hair died blonde and my black roots grew in. I explained that I wanted to look more natural and she placed brown hair dye in between the black and blonde. However, now I just have a line from brown to blonde instead of it looking cohesive. Honestly, I don't know Ruk's crew by name besides her daughter but I talk to everyone and everybody is great and super nice! Ruk is just a whole bunch of awesomeness. She knows I have no idea what the heck she's talking about when she's explaining stuff to me. But is trust her and give her full range on what to do. Whether highlights, lowlights, balayage, whatever! I know my hair will be taken care of and the products she uses won't damage my hair. They also added an addition to the salon. So, they also offer facials and eyelash treatment done by her daughter. This place is cool, hip, laid back, but get the work done. Depending on what services you get, expect to be here for a few hours too. Since this shop is in Bayonne, there is one street parking. My suggestion is to make your appt as early as possible to secure parking in the front or else you're going to end up driving around looking. I've suggested this salon to many people I know. I still suggest Ruk's salon to this day!

I actually saw the IG influencer Jeanne there who I know via her IG that she is a frequent customer. Ruk's entire attention was on this influencer. I guess it makes sense that the salon would care more about her than a new customer. However, it still felt a bit crappy. Just be transparent if there is no capacity or please set the correct expectations. I would have totally been OK waiting another couple of weeks if needed. There was another customer who came in for a consultation with Ruk and Ruk took about 1 hour to finally talk to her. Then when that customer was trying to book an appt, you can tell Ruk was trying to have the customer book with another salonist. When the customer then said that she was trying to book with Ruk specifically, Ruk then said sure.

Most importantly though, she is professional and has great customer service. I had made an appointment online (which was easy to do!) but mistakenly didn't specify exactly what style I wanted. So when I arrived, I found out the style would take longer than I expected and she had another client coming in after me. It was a complete fumble on my behalf so I had no problem rescheduling, but she was kind enough to be flexible and still honor my appointment. Because of that, I had no problem taking a break while she had attended to another the client. I got butterfly locs done and it took about 3.5 hours. I was comfortable the whole time and she is gentle working with your hair. The time flew by, mostly because Rosy is hilarious! It was great conversation and usually I'm the one who avoids chit chat at the salon. Speaking of, the salon itself is modern and CLEAN. My pet peeve is when stylists do not clean throughly between clients. No problem with that here. My butterfly locs came out great and gave me such a confidence boost! I had them in for about a month -- I could've left them in longer since they still looked great, I just like to switch it up often. In the 3 hours I was there politics were discussed, high school teachers sighed in relief that summer school had ended, sisters translated for each other, husbands held onto children while moms got a needed break, and people smiled. I purchased the most expensive groupon available because I wanted blue. I really wanted an ombre in blue, but 3 months of debating and searching and reading reviews meant I missed out on ombre groupons. Probably just as well. So I called Elena, told her what I wanted, she explained that the groupon was only for highlights and cut and blow-out. Oh. I made the appointment anyway. I figured that I would work it out one way or another and began searching pinterest for blue highlights. Yeah, that would work. Toniann was my stylist. She's a little fireball. I explain what I want, show her some pics from the web and off we go. Now I will state that my groupon did not cover all of what I wanted and I was cool with that. Toniann explained what all the charges would be BEFORE we did step one. There were no surprises at the end. My hair is subtle. Honestly, you really can't tell it's blue unless I'm in the sun. Is that a bad thing? No, I do at least *try* to look professional - it's hard for a biologist, though. I've had some health issues this year, so my hair has really suffered. Toniann noticed immediately, made sure that we worked on getting it back to healthy, and made me feel just a little bit better. No, they didn't offer me champagne and strawberries. They did offer me water, tea or coffee. Look, if you are one of the "beautiful people" who feels that your salon is a reflection of your status - don't go here. We don't need you to look down on the rest of us. If, however, you want to look and feel good, support a local business, and like being part of the community you couldn't ask for a better place.
