I think Dish is my favorite restaurant in Lynchburg. The rotating specials are fantastic and you can always try something new! The Chef has great taste in creating unique flavor profiles that really leave you wanting more. Great selection of wine and cheese, and they often rotate the craft beer selection on draft. Everything is consistantly delicious at Dish. The polenta is to die for. I often find myself craving it. The spring rolls and proscuitto wrapped asparagus are lovely as well. Everything on the menu is worth a try. I haven't been dissapointed yet! I also love that they use local and organic ingrediants. I LOVED dish when I was in college a few years ago. It was our go-to dinner place. They have since changed the menu slightly. My rating is 4 stars because I am still basing this place on the good ole days and maybe when I went last month it was just a bad night. Service was not as good as I remember. The duck confit spring rolls were still great. I used to love the bread and garlic they give you at the beginning of the meal and we had to ask for it this time! And we got it at the end of the meal! This is our favorite spot in Lynchburg. The dim lighting, artsy atmosphere and food do it for us every time. The fried oysters with horseradish and bacon jam, caesar salad, and gnocchi verde are favorites but we hope to try to quail next time. It has been sold out both times we've been. Food was delicious and the restaurant is beautiful. I would recommend splitting about 5 plates with one other person. Three plates per person was very filling. I was there early on a weeknight and it was almost empty which made for strange ambiance but the food was delicious!!! Last night was the first time that my wife and I visited this restaurant, and I have to say that we were thoroughly surprised and pleased with our experience. We had an excellent waitress and excellent food. We have some wine, a beer, a cheese tray, a tamales tray, and the jerk chicken tray. Again, it was all very good and less expensive then other tapas joints that we have to. Our waitress told us about the couples specials that they have on Monday, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays, and we are looking forward to revisiting on one of those nights in the near future. read more

Dish has a lovely atmosphere and an interesting menu, and after one meal where the food quality did not live up to that interesting menu, we decided to try it one more time. If they had their own web site, I would have just emailed this and kept my complaint private. Fist, the service issue. I ordered a glass of wine, that oddly did not show up after a ten minute wait. Once I looked around I realized it was because our waiter "David" was making time with two young female patrons at the bar. I had to ask the other waiter who brought the appetizers. When the meal was over, the same waiter said he would tally up the check. As we waited again for awhile, I looked over and he was chatting up two other female patrons at the other end of the bar. I had to walk over and ask him to tally up the check, which he had not started. He brought it over, with no apology, and I asked him to stay while I checked the bill, lest he get distracted again, and then gave him my credit card. He returned it promptly without looking at me. Leaving a $5 tip on a $70 bill was something I had never done before, but I really had never been treated this way either. As to the food, a general disappointment. My daughter ordered the stuffed pepper, It looked like it fell apart in the oven, and the rice was undercooked crunchy. The baba ganoush was a dark blob baring no resemblance in taste to smoked eggplant with tahini. If it was not listed as baba ganoush, it would be anybody's guess. The hummus was little more than ground chick peas, short on tahini, garlic and lemon juice. My wife got the filet and egg, tasty little chewy steak, but a long way from a filet, and overcooked. The jerk chicken was a mediocre dish of chewy chicken thighs and a few plantains. Lat time there i had such high hopes for the paella, but it was heavy on flavorless rice, and lackluster seafood. Dish has a lovely atmosphere, and great menu - they just need cooking that will match the menu. And a little more graciousness from the staff would be helpful. But after two visits, a return is doubtful. read more

For the last few years, I have been fortunate to travel to visit friends in Lynchburg. We have eaten at Dish on various occasions. Service has always been solid and responsive. Food was sometimes good, but sometimes spotty. This last visit over the weekend was a highlight. Mussels, curry cauliflower, kimchi, arugula, beets and chèvre were all the tops. Not too salty, oily or anything negative. Just pure deliciousness and paired well with the various red wines they're pouring. Really happy to taste all the improved and flavorful tapas! read more

My husband and I visited in February for a late Valentine's celebration on a week night. We ordered the: - Arugula Salad - Fritto Misto - Southern Fried Quail - Three cheeses, can't remember which three at the moment. - Foie Gras, which was a special that evening. We both felt the restaurant was too dimly lit. I suppose it was for ambiance, but it was difficult to see each other, the menu, or the food. Our server was friendly but she seemed new and unfamiliar with menu details. There was only one other party in the restaurant that evening so it was quiet and romantic, but at times so quiet we felt uncomfortable talking because it seemed so loud in the small space! As for the food, we really enjoyed the cheeses! They came with homemade crackers/toasts and each cheese was paired with an accompaniment- one had stone ground mustard, the other two had a fruit preserve, and the pairings were amazing. Our favorite small plate was the Fritto Misto. We also enjoyed the Arugula Salad. The quail and foie gras were not my favorite. My husband enjoyed them, but I would not order them again. Overall, it was a nice evening out, and if we go back, we will probably just order cheeses because they were the most delicious part of our meal. read more

Delicious all around! I went to Dish with a friend this past weekend. We enjoyed a bottle of wine and four small plates (and dessert) for a very reasonable price. We ordered the small mushroom plate, which was good, but very, very garlicky. I love garlic, but my friend was put off. The truffle fries were next--they were tasty, but nothing particularly groundbreaking. We then tried the pumpkin gnocchi special on a whim, and were BLOWN AWAY. Amazing flavor! We couldn't get over how delicious this dish was. Our last plate was the duck spring rolls, which were also very good. Our dessert (pie,hocolate peanutbutter--our server brought us one half slice of pb and then a whole slice of chocolate chip pie to make up for it, because they only had half a slice of peanut butter pie remaining). Our server was very friendly and made good recommendations. Our food came very quickly (we were impressed), and we felt that the ambiance was nice. I would definitely recommend Dish for a romantic evening or a fun night out with friends. read more

I love Dish! I have eaten here at least 10 times and it is very consistent both with service and quality. I love tapas restaurants and although this is not a traditional tapas place it is great for Lynchburg. The prices are really cheap for the value of food you receive. The atmosphere is adorable. Dish is fabulous! My husband and I are well-traveled diners and happened upon Dish in December of 2006. Coming from Atlanta, we weren't sure that we'd find anything in Lynchburg that would be considered fun, contemporary dining--boy were we wrong. Dave and his team at Dish have wow'd us now on three separate occasions. The small plates at Dish are divine. Try anything on the specials list--on any given night, they will feature the finest, freshest ingredients skillfully prepared but not overly fluffed--nothing is too fancy here. The food and the place are truly approachable, and delightful in every sense. The wine list is thoughtful and does feature some palatable Virginia wines (kudos to the staff for considering VA wines worthy of serving in a wine-focused restaurant) as well as California and Oregon favorites. On a recent visit in May 2008, we sampled some spectacular prawns in a lively garlic sauce--the shellfish was so tender and well prepared that it more closely resembled a freshly-caught lobster. The gnocci with green beans and bacon was comforting and savory without being heavy or too seasoned. Often Asian, Mexican or other international flavors will appear in the specials menu--do not be afraid to try these dishes, they are what make Dish so delicious! (Also do not miss the cheese menu, which features VA cheeses as well as specialties from around the US.) The scene is hip without being painfully so. Comfy high-top tables with candlelight fill (but not too closely) the lofty space. Touches of exposed brick and historic details add character. The soundtrack is cool with everything from Paul Simon to the B52's to Miles Davis and Etta James. One of the most impressive dining experiences we may have ever had in our almost 11 years of marriage was on our recent visit. We arrived in Lynchburg late on a Friday night. It was a special occasion, and we'd looked so forward to dining at Dish. Alas, it was too late by the time we arrived in town, and when I called to move our reservation to the next night, the waiter on the line immediately remembered us from the previous visit (almost a year prior), inquired about our son and how he was doing and said he couldn't wait to see us the next night. CJ is a GEM of a waiter--knowledgeable, entertaining and never overbearing. The whole Dish experience couldn't be more enjoyable. If I would have reviewed Dish 3 years ago, or before, this would have been a 5 star review. 5 years ago or earlier I had the best dining experience of my life at DIsh. It was so good I still remember (and will never forget) my servers name, CJ. Because of the fantastic service and unbelievable food I have returned faithfully. However, my most recent dining experience, this weekend, will be my last. The atmosphere and decor is still stellar. The service was good. The bread is great, the cheese plates (if they actually have the cheeses listed) are still fantastic. Even the wine selection was a downer, not because the selection was bad, but because they were out of what we wanted. As soon as I received my salad the dinner went down hill. The salad was seriously over dressed. My greens lay limp like spaghetti noodles and dripped with dressing. I could taste nothing but balsamic. I sent it back, something I never do. Then all the small plates (after waiting quite a while) came out all at the same time. Usually the waiter would stagger the order so we had time to enjoy them. Everything we ordered aside from the fritters was so incredibly salty we just didn't eat it. So disappointed. At the end of the night I seriously expected not to see that returned salad that was inedible on my ticket. Sadly it was there. Considering that the food had turned out wrong, we were charged for returned food, most of the selections were unavailable, the timing of the dinner was all rushed and the bathrooms were very dirty, we just decided that this was it for our favorite restaurant. I ordered carry out for lunch. Caesar salad with grilled chicken. The girl working the register didn't seem to know how and kept apologizing for it taking a looooonnnngggg time to run my card. While I didn't think it possible to mess up a salad.... they succeeded. I got two plastic containers of what I THOUGHT was Caesar dressing. Nope, it was GARLIC. Straight up minced garlic sauce. I dumped one on my salad before I realized the overpowering smell of garlic, and even when I tried to remove it, the taste of pure garlic was so bad I had to toss the salad. Mistakes happen so I called to let them know so they wouldn't serve that to anyone else. I wasn't going to go all the way back, so I didn't ask for a refund or a free meal but I would have liked an apology. The person answering the phone didn't seem to care that I had been charged $12.30 (not counting the tip I gave on a carry out) and left with a meal that I had to toss. It's for that reason they get one star. read more

This is the only tapas bar that I know of in lynchburg. It is actually quite good. The food is fresh and the selection is exceptional. A lot of exotic foods and European dishes. They have a good cheese selection and a decent wine selection as well. I wish more people would come here I think it is a great spot and it would be nice for drinks and cocktails if more people would show up. Unfortunately downtown Lynchburg struggles to be lively even on the weekends. read more

My first time at Dish and I was impressed. We love tapas or small plate eating so this was perfect for us. The dining room has a lovely atmosphere and the waitstaff made us feel welcomed and special. They had a good wine list with many available by the glass. Their bread is excellent. If you don't like the small plate style of eating they have a few regular sized entrees but I'm not sure this would be a good place for you. Creative decor is fun to see. read more

When I walked in I wasn't impressed with the decor/art but I'm picky about that sort of thing. Once the food started rolling out I forgot all about the ugly paintings. I ordered way too much food nut it was worth it. Highlights of night- petite filet with sunny side up egg and truffle oil, duck spring rolls, crab cake and a nice bottle of montepulciano that came with a cheese plate. NY Strip special was mammoth and delicious.. Chocolate coconut pie was amazing, save a few sips of red wine to chase it down- you can't go wrong. 4 thumbs way up. Also it's pretty much dirt cheap to eat like a king in this place. read more

Dish is certainly different than a lot of the more chain (style)restaurants in Lynchburg (or most areas like Lynchburg for that matter), but there are certain things that make this good and bad in my opinion. The food is really good, and I would go back for things like their spring rolls, meatballs, and hummus/babaghanoush dishes. They also have a very nice wine & beer list to fit just about any palate. But unfortunately on the con side it's pretty pretentious, and that is a real turn off for me. I didn't have any issues with the staff, but on a general rule the patrons seem to be rather snobby. Another thing that is a huge turn off is their inability to present the meal all at one time. I understand that obviously some food takes longer to cook than others, but it is unnerving to have part of the guests receive food while others sit and wait. On one occasion a member of our party received his meal nearly 10 minutes after we received ours. We didn't want to be rude and eat in front of him, but we also had to decide whether we would let our own meals get cold while we waited. It's a real catch 22 because you don't want to think your meal is sitting in the kitchen under a heat lamp, but bringing out the plates as they are prepared is unacceptable in my opinion too. And while Lynchburg is trying to improve downtown, parking is still not a good situation. Unless you are lucky enough to find one of the spots on Main St directly in front expect to walk at least a block to the restaurant. If going to a restaurant and knowing just what will be on the menu, and knowing exactly what to expect is important to you than Dish probably won't appeal to you. But if you like varied tastes, a quaint yet classy atmosphere and character than it's worth a try. Oh and make sure to get reservations. Since their dining room only has about a dozen tables we have seen many turned away at the door who thought they could just walk in for dinner. read more

Perfect - a true gem. I have eaten here a number of times over the past year as here in Lynchburg for business and have never been disappointed by the tastes or the service. The warm tasty bread with garlic/olive oil dipping sauce starts you off right. The mussels are amazing, (both the one on the menu and the special w/ chorizo), try sopping the bread in the broth. Petit filet is great, although cooked a bit more rare then ordered (not a problem for me as I like it pretty bloody). Meatballs sound boring but may actually be one of the tastiest I've had in my life w/ great marinara (and kids love them too). The cheese pairings with the wine in the wine "challenge" are exquisite. Go with whatever they recommend. Rice noodle dish with beef, mushrooms and tofu also hit the spot. I can't wait to go back and try some other dishes! Small plates give you lots of options. read more

oooohhh Dish! i was so looking forward to dining again especially given the fact that I hadn't been in over a year and the first time i was there it was awesome but i have to say that the 2nd visit didn't quite live up to the first...i was at home for the holidays, catching up with friends and of course i wanted to go back to dish and i'm think that the holidays is what screwed things up because there were a few menu substitutions. we had the special which is still an awesome deal with a bottle of wine, 3 plates, and dessert. ordered the mediterranean plate, noodles, duck spring rolls, fried rice, choco chip pie, and a few cheeses. the humboldt fog cheese is by far one of my faves EVER and i loved it just as much as the first. but the noodles i barely touched, since my last visit they changed them to a cold noodle dish -which isn't really clear on the menu- and to be honest cold glass noodles are not tasty at all...the medi plate and the fried rice were good...duck spring rolls were the star of the show for sure. overall the food was just OK, doesn't mean that I won't go back when I'm home just means that Dish isn't the best place to go over the holidays given their dependence on shipments and I would love to have the 1st experience repeated and am happy to give another chance! read more

My best friend and I had the pleasure of dining here last Friday evening around 5:20 after work when we intended to dine at Bull Branch but they were not opening until 6pm so they suggested the Dish which was close by and already open for business. We were not disappointed! We were the only ones there at first so we got seated and served right away. We really enjoyed the coziness and the nice atmosphere (candlelight on all the tables). We decided to share and try 4 different plates: the duck spring rolls, asparagus with crabmeat, jerk chicken and last but certainly not least the Mediterranean dish which was a delightful taste sensation! Before our dishes were brought out to us they served us this wonderful rosemary bread loaf with olive oil dressing. And this was a sign that we had come to the right place! My friend and I thoroughly enjoyed everything but especially liked the Mediterranean and the asparagus dishes. The server was very helpful and was very attentive to our needs.
