Egg rolls, shrimp, ribs, pork belly
Amelia J.

Went to shoemakers for a nice dinner and it did not disappoint! We had some nice drinks, I ordered Good things come in pears and my husband had the Isabella of Castille. We decided to sample a few appetizers for our dinner, we got Sticky Baby Back Ribs, Country Eggrolls, Pork Belly, and Stuffed Jumbo Shrimp. The shrimp and the ribs were my favorite! And we had Crème brûlée cheesecake for dessert. Super attentive service as well. Very intimate and fancy atmosphere

I had an amazing experience that I wanted to share dining at the shoemakers. I decided to sit bar side at the restaurant since I was dining alone. I opted for a filet mignon, which was perfectly cooked to perfection, and was paired with fingerling potatoes and asparagus. It was a healthy 8 ounce size portion of filet mignon and sides. I ordered a deliciously made Cosmopolitan as well. The restaurants layout and atmosphere was rich & open spaced for comfortable seating. The restaurant seating side is quite large and spacious too. the menu itself has a variety of different options and you cannot go wrong with any of the main entrees.

I moved to downtown Lynchburg before Shoemaker was there. It's the kind of restaurant that you have your parents take you to when they come to visit because you can't afford it yourself. My parents are gone these days so I had to bring my 78-year-old self! Restaurant week seemed like a good time and the price fixe meal sounded just interesting enough to look like it would be a winner. The restaurant week dinner is an amazing combination of flavors selected because they blend into each other so well. It's a nice experience to have an expert chef create a menu that you will enjoy from beginning to end. This is a classy restaurant. At a table near me there were two gentlemen having dinner conversing in French. Right here in Lynchburg!!

We stopped in with no reservation. The manager tried to accommodate us. We sat at the bar for a drink until to our table was ready. Zach was a great bartender - very conscientious. Our waiter, Zach, was great as well. I had the shrimp and grits and my husband had the tuna special. Both were great!!

We had dinner tonight at Shoemaker's, staying in the hotel. The restaurant is extremely attractive, modern, quiet, nice. It's also welcoming, with responsive greeters. The food, however, was mediocre at best, and pretty expensive. It's a very close call as to whether we'd return. Yikes!

We thoroughly enjoyed everything! Our appetizers included Charred Octopus, Crab Cake and Ratatouille - all FANTASTIC! Entrees included Duck Breast, Lamb Shank and Chicken Roulade - delicious and absolutely NO Complaints. Okay, there is a complaint. there was NO room for dessert. Will return soon

Here's the Ribeye.

Chef refused to prepare steak as requested. I asked for the $58 ribeye to be medium, Pittsburgh style (charred) and blackened. It came out rare with no char whatsoever. The waitress said she was reprimanded and he refused to blacken or char it, nor would he prepare as medium. I frequent top steak places around the country from NYC to LA to Dallas, but have never had a chef do this. I didn't want to cause a scene since I was there buying a meal for family. Very odd!! Waitress was great; ambiance was nice; food was good.

Bacon Steak and Seared Ahi Tuna

It was my boyfriend's birthday weekend (5/14) and I wanted to treat him to an amazing dinner out. I found Shoemaker's on OpenTable, reviewed the menu, and thought this would be ideal. We were pleasantly pleased! Although we didn't have reservations, the hostess suggested we sit at the bar and was very accommodating. Our bartender, Paul, was phenomenal! I tried ordering a drink, but, mistakenly looked at the wrong drink menu; however, he made a variation of it... an apple shooter. It was great! We asked him about some of the appetizers and he recommended the Bacon Steak and the Seared Ahi Tuna. The Bacon Steak was delicious, crispy and savory. Although the Seared Ahi Tuna did not initially look appealing, it was PHENOMENAL! It was seared ahi tuna, avocado, pickled red onions, ginger and hints of jalapeño. When pairing pieces of the Bacon Steak and Seared Ahi Tuna, it was a flavor explosion with each bite! My boyfriend ordered the Old Havana and I ordered a Titos Vodka Mule. Both drinks were amazing. For our entrees, I ordered the New York Strip with the herb salad and substituted broccolini while my boyfriend ordered the Filet Mignon and Lobster Ravioli. Everything was chef's kiss! Truly perfect! I was able to give my compliments to the chef as he made his rounds. Paul checked on us, wished my boyfriend a happy birthday, held great conversations with us and made the entire evening memorable. The decor of the restaurant was elegant and beautiful. The atmosphere was warm, welcoming and intimate. I would definitely recommend this restaurant as a great date night, place to celebrate an anniversary or birthday.

Upscale without being stiff, comfortable without losing that polished feel. I ordered the jambalaya, and it was a standout. Well layered flavor, not overly heavy, with a nice balance of spice and richness. The proteins were cooked properly and the vegetables still had structure, which matters in a dish like that. It felt intentional, not just thrown together for a brunch menu. Across the table, the Eggs Benedict was equally strong. The hollandaise was smooth and properly seasoned, not overly lemony or thick, and the eggs were cooked right where they should be. That is often where places miss, but this one didn't. Dessert was where things really elevated. The strawberry cheesecake was clean, bright, and not overly sweet, with a good texture that held together without being dense. The chocolate Rasberry glutin-free dessert torte, was rich in the right way. Deep chocolate flavor without crossing into heavy or overwhelming. Service was attentive without hovering, and timing between courses was well paced, which is not easy on a busy holiday like Easter. Overall, this is a place that clearly pays attention to execution. Not just presentation, but flavor, balance, and consistency. That is what separates a good brunch from one you remember. We will be back.

It's next to a small playground and new amphitheater, so I'm sure this place gets quite busy on weekends. One person in our party said her salad had the best dressing she's ever had. The fried pickles were good. The shrimp was good. One bartender was good. Cons - We walked in and basically weren't sure what to do. There was a woman at we thought was a hostess stand, but she never said anything to us. We finally asked if we needed to check in with her to get seated. We did. But it was kind of weird. One bartender was awful. Never made eye contact. Wouldn't take any orders. Acted like she wanted to be anywhere else. I thought the Caesar salad was ok. It came with lacquered salmon. I would have loved the salmon, but not lacquered. It couldn't be made to order. Ok fine. I ordered it the way it was described. There was nothing lacquered about that salmon. It also was shredded on top of the salad and was maybe two ounces. That's ridiculous. Our server wasn't very helpful and not very attentive. I'm sure many people have had great experiences there, but I'm not sure I would take the time to go back.

I don't even eat oysters but know these were a failure. I had a sub that was described as being piled high with roast beef and served with an au jus. But instead it was minimal meat on tough bread with a dip made of onions and what tasted like great value brown gravy. It was our first and last visit, honestly if I could go back in time we wouldn't have ever gone the first time. We ended up here because the place we wanted to eat was packed, no issue getting a table here which should have been a sign. Oh and to top it off when it was time to pay we were told sorry we gave your ticket to someone else so here's their ticket, it's about the same as yours a little less probably....umm what? We paid it and left because we were over the entire experience. Oh and whoever on your staff that smokes weed it stinks up the place and just not the vibe we look for in a restaurant that's charging expensive prices for subpar ingredients. When we left we picked up a chicken sandwich at chick fil a just so we had a decent meal this evening.
