Dish was awesome! I'm a foodie, and privy to a lot of great places here in the Seattle area. Yet this is the first and only place so far that I have given a 5-star review to. We went here on June 9 as a group of 8. We got nearly everything on the menu. Here's the breakdown: Awesome: Fried Quail Pork Belly BBQ Duck Confit Spring Rolls Really Good: Gnocchi Green Curry Prawns Sea Scallops Mushrooms [1-2 other dishes I can't remember now] Pretty Good: Asparagus Soup Tamales They had a very nice assortment of cheeses. I picked 4 - house made mozzarella, 2 chevres & 1 other cow's milk cheese. Extremely good with very generous servings! They also had a very reasonably priced wine list with a lot of wines by the glass or half-glass. I enjoyed a different half-glass with every small plate I had! Definitely be going back here every time we come to Lynchburg. read more

There's a reason that Dish is one of the longest-lasting establishments in struggling downtown Lynchburg. The food, staff, and atmosphere cannot be beat. Dish has a wide variety of tapas from all over the globe -- if you want duck tacos, pho, baba ghanoush, and a cheese plate all without getting out of your seat -- come to Dish. In addition to their menu of fine cheeses, tapas, and extensive wine list, Dish offers nightly specials that are consistently rotating. There are also typically a few "large" plates for someone who wants to just have a one-course dinner. My favorites are the quail, Humboldt fog aged goat cheese, jerk chicken, mediterranean dish, tacos, samosas, and mussels. Since this is a tapas place, Dish is really great for a meal when you just want to take your time. There's only about 10 tables in the place, and the wait staff is very attentive. They've recently added liquor to their bar, so you can now have wine, beer, or liquor, but really I recommend their exciting list of wines. Best time to try out Dish? Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday. They do a special called Phenomenal Rendezvous where you can get a bottle of their selected red or white wine, three small plates, and dessert -- all for $35! Dish is absolutely amazing. My husband and I have been trying all the nicest places out here in Seattle, but Dish was better than most of them! We came here with my parents, his parents, and his sister and boyfriend, so we were a party of 8. Our service was great (though the wine glass would stay empty longer than I liked), and the food? OUTSTANDING. We tried nearly every dish on the menu, and everything was fantastic. Shrimp with green curry sauce, Sea scallops, Pork belly seared and braised, Asparagus soup with sesame oil, Fried quail, Duck confit spring rolls, Gnocchi with duck, Tuna.. we talked about this place long after leaving it, and no one could pick a favorite dish- they were ALL so good. I wasn't expecting to find such amazing food in Lynchburg VA, but WOW. It's a must-visit for every trip home for us now!! read more

Dish, in my opinion, is the best restaurant in Lynchburg. Period. I always enjoy checking out restaurants of this caliber, because I look young, and I know it is a good test as to whether or not the staff will be nice and helpful to everyone or just to the guy who parks his Porche in front of the restaurant. Walking into Dish, you're quickly pleased with the ambiance and decor. The aesthetically-pleasing teal walls with dishes hanging on them surrounds the bar and the well-placed tables in the dining room preset with the linens, plates, glasses, and silverware. If I had one critique of the restaurant, it would be the unfortunate placement of the hostess. In my opinion, I would like to see a table placed where the hostess is as there is currently only one table that looks out the front glass over Main Street. After ordering some drinks (only water and tea this time around), the three of us decided to order 5 small plates and share them. 1. Mediterranean plate - a wonderfully-tasting mozzarella ball, prosciutto, and a bean and olive salad (among the olives were kalamata - my personal favorite) 2. Baked asparagus wrapped in prosciutto - true, we got our porsciutto fix for the night, but this dish alone was taunting my taste buds as I wanted more, but it was gone before I realized I was eating it - the proportion wasn't small, but it was so good I ate it too quickly. 3. Duck spring rolls - the spring rolls were fabulous and wanted to make me order more or them and take them home with me. If you're one for spring rolls, these are a must. 4. Coconut green-curry shrimp - If I had to pick my favorite dish at Dish, I would have to say it was this one. I am always curious to try different combinations of food, but I didn't know how the curry would fare paired with one of my favorite foods (coconut shrimp), but I was delightfully surprised. If you have one or more seafood eaters at the table, politely ration out this dish before everyone is selfishly lunging across the table for more. 5. Fois gras - as I was the only one at the table who had ever had fois gras before, I insisted that we get it. It was by far the most peculiar of the dishes, but I was glad to see the fois gras was whole, not a pt. The fois gras was laid on a crostini over a bed of greens. Garnishing the plate were fresh blackberries and a 25-year old aged balsamic vinegar. Dessert: I chose to have handmade, vanilla bean ice cream. The ice cream was exquisitely creamy and the vanilla was so subtle it took until the end that that was what making it taste so good. I can't speak for the wine menu at Dish. I did not have any this time around, but if I had to take a wild guess, I would lean towards a good wine menu. Unless they have tastes of wine, I don't know how easy it would be to find one wine to match all of the different foods. I have been to several fine-dining restaurants from Aspen to New York to Los Angeles to Paris and Dish is admittedly not the best restaurant in the world, but it has no reason to hide in shame. If you're in Lynchburg wanting a great dining experience for a date or for a group, Dish should be the first priority of any resident or visitor. read more

PLEASE edit your website to make it clear that the "Phenomenal Rendezvous for 2" can't be used by couples within a group, and that it is no longer good on Wed. or Thurs. Our small group budgeted for this special ahead of time so it dampened our evening to realize we needed $40-45 per person instead of the $25 we had planned for! The food was tasty, esp. the jerk chicken and noodles, and all the desserts were exceptional, but the unexpected expense & lackluster service made a potential 5 star experience only a 3 last night. read more

How long does water take to boil? What's your guess? 5 minutes? 8? Well, apparently at Dish it takes 1 hour and 10 minutes. I ordered a side salad and a pasta. When I asked where my food might be after 45 minutes I was told the kitchen was waiting for the water to boil. I don't like being lied to. Tell me the chef is incompetent. Tell me you lost the ticket. Tell me you don't like my patronage. But don't give me an excuse so offensive that my blood boils before your supposed water does. After finally getting my pasta and salad I realized the pasta was extremely gritty. They cooked the pasta WITH the clams..... Never again, Dish. read more

Dish is a quaint little spot in Lynchburg, where I was visiting a friend who has been a bit under the weather. While the concept and the menu sounded awesome, the actual experience was just "ok". I will take the meal in order. The bread that comes out with the garlic/parmesan oil could have been really good, had it not been ice cold. It was a very long time before we got our next plate, which was merely cheese, so I'm not quite sure what the delay was. I must say the cheese plate was amazing, though I was disappointed that two of our original three selections were sold out and not available for purchase. The crab fritters were decent... though quite bready, with minimal seafood flavor. The vinaigrette on the Bibb Lettuce salad was extremely acidic, which took away from the overall brightness of the simple salad. The Korean Barbecue Chicken was quite a let down. Though it featured a very strong flavor of kimchi in the side dishes, the chicken itself could have been roasted with thyme and garlic for all of the uniqueness that I could taste. Overall, I was disappointed that this was my friends first entre into the Lynchburg dining scene, but it is my hope that we will find better spots in the future. I travel a lot and have very high standards. Dish is good for what it is, a mediocre tapas restaurant in a college town. but definitely nothing to write home about. read more

Dish continues to impress and delight. The kitchen is consistent in both quality and the handling of items on its standing menu like the green curry shrimp, spring rolls and crabcake and the chef still wows diners with enticing and eclectic specials. A recent visit found a Thai-influenced small plate of glass (i.e., Asian cellophane) noodles tossed with sweet lump crabmeat and a spicy peanut sauce which was as attractive as it was delicious, and paired nicely with a glass of crisp sauvignon blanc during this stunning late Spring weather. Another standout was a sublime housemade gnocchi with fresh asparagus tips, pancetta and mild goat cheese - excellent! Similarly, service remains highly pleasant and efficient with chatty and personable servers. Dish is hitting on all cylinders - just look around and see the smiling faces appreciating the experience. This restaurant is a great surprise in a town like Lynchburg- the artsy decor in the chill atmosphere and great small plates of diverse cuisines is something you would expect to find in a large city. We had a 3-cheese plate (one goat, one sheet, and one blend) that was quite delicious. It was served with garlic crusted crispy bread, but it would have been better to have a more plain accompaniment since the cheeses were very flavorful. We used a bit of the homemade bread served as an appetizer, which was delicious. As for the small plates, we had the arugula salad (a little too much dressing I think but good otherwise), meatballs, tortilla espanola, scallops (one of the daily specials). It was all very good and the portions were a bit on the larger side than we expected for tapas, so we could barely finish! My favorite was the tortilla, with the scallops and salad in a close tie for second. We also had wine; I had a rose, I believe the only one on the menu, and it was ok. My dining companion had a red wine and then a port for dessert, both of which he said were good. read more

Although there is bar there is not a "bar scene" element to the restaurant. I appreciate this because I would much rather go just to eat and enjoy my friends' company. I'm not sure what to say that hasn't already been said. This IS one of the best restaurants in Lynchburg. After reading the reviews here, my wife was very excited about trying it. I was a bit apprehensive because I wasn't familiar with Tapas, but the atmosphere is relaxed and comfortable and it's not as complicated as I thought it'd be. We took advantage of a 3 dish special that included a bottle of wine and desert for a very reasonable price. Everything that was placed on our table was just phenomenal. I was so impressed with the dishes that I embarrassed myself the 4th time I told our waiter that everything was "absolutely excellent" - I must have sounded like I had a limited vocabulary, but I didn't know what else to say. The gist is that instead of getting a 3 portion meal of meat, starch and vegetable, you're getting many varied plates of expertly prepared, well designed, gourmet food - and it is very affordable too. As mentioned the wait staff was top notch. Our waiter was friendly, funny, and when we asked him bring us a wine of his recommendation, he said "Done!" and returned with a wonderful Zinfadel that we weren't expecting. 5 stars, all around - great staff, food and wine. After moving to Lynchburg from a much bigger city, my wife and I were so relieved to find Dish and Bulls Branch (among others). Great great atmosphere and interesting and thoughtful dishes. After a few years of hitting Dish from time to time my one recommendation would be that they mix up the menu more often. I usually come here for tapas at dinnertime, but enjoyed a gourmet and roast beef sandwich for lunch once that was delicious. This is a good place to bring out-of-town guests. Its small - maybe 10 tables - so make a reservation. If you forget though, I've never seen the bar fully booked, so that's an option. read more

I walk in a little uncomfortable since I was in short and t-shirt. The place is so cute, I feel like I need to dress up a little and bring a date. :) The waitress was really sweet in explaining the menu. I settle with a shiraz, arugula salad and bruchetta. DISH is not merely a restaurant, it is a delightful experience. My wife and I are not big on eating out, but for our anniversary we decided to venture out. We made our way to downtown Lynchburg and parked in the Community Market parking lot. We walked across the street and to the left where their door was marked by a gently burning torch. We arrived just as DISH was opening for dinner. Eclectic, brightly colored paintings hung on the walls, warm wooden furniture and white clothe tableclothes populated the intimate setting. Late day sunlight streamed in the window while a multitude of small candles lined the shelving behind the bar seating. A wide mix of upbeat and chilled music peacefully set the mood. Overall a perfect marriage of modern and vintage sensibilities. We were greeted at the door and promptly seated. Our meal began with fresh baked bread and garlic in oil. If my wife had a bigger purse we would have filled it to the brim. The bread was simply outstanding. Our waitress was one of the owners, which gave a special quality to the entire meal. She was passionate, attentive, open and very friendly. Superior service. DISH specializes in small plate servings which allows for a greater sampling of their incredible food. From the baby lettuce salad to the flat iron steak (local, organic beef), and the Mediterranean platter, everything had a distinctly nuanced flavor. You could tell the Chef is a master at his art. Every bite deserved slow enjoyment. Our meal ended with homemade pies and fresh ice cream made in-house. Again, my tastebuds were floored. The folks at DISH are artisans, creating a culinary quality that is unmatched in this age of box-store generic food. DISH is a celebration of fine handcrafted food in a unique and eclectic setting. dish is a cute little spot on Lynchburg's Main Street that does the whole small plates deal that is becoming a big thing in today's food world. I dropped by here with my beautiful girlfriend for the "phenomenal rendezvous", which turns out, is a pretty incredible deal. You get to choose 3 small plates, grab a bottle of the white or red, and get some dessert all for just $35! While it is a steal, the two wines you have to choose from are surely not close to the good wines they have, and I must say that the service was quite slow even though few people were in the restaurant at the time. The ambiance also makes for a great date. Low lighting, beautiful tables, and charming decorations. A definite hot spot for Lynchburg's up and coming downtown. read more

Believe me, I am Chinese! 2) Italian sausage, you MUST get it 3) Mediterranean dish, very yummy homemade hummus and freshly baked pita break 4) Jerk chicken, it has a spicy taste to it 5) Fritto misto, fried calamari, scallop, shrimp, etc. The only disappointment was the desert. This is such a fun place with amazing food! We had heard great things about it and finally decided to get some friends together for a fun evening out on a Thursday night. The restaurant was empty most of the evening, but that was fine with us, we definitely kept ourselves entertained. The atmosphere was cozy and upscale with linen tablecloths and candles at each table, but still comfortable and casual. We decided to each order a couple of small dishes and pass them around. Here are the ones I can remember: Southern Fried Quail Bruschetta Mozzarella Fritto Misto- Fried Calamari, scallops and shrimp Cheese plate ( don't remember which one, but it was incredible) Tamales Jerk Chicken Polenta Some kind of Soup And Pie... oh my gosh the pie... with homemade vanilla ice cream Everything was delicious and the service was incredible. They were very friendly and helpful. Our glasses were always full and the food seemed like it just kept coming out all night. We can't wait to go back with more friends. We stopped in on a Thurs night, it was slow. But the service was friendly and food enjoyable.

Got the surf and turf plate with a salad for $26. The filet was OK, we asked for medium rare and it was cooked more like medium well. It was probably about 6 Oz. It came with two scallops which were cooked well but like the steak they were a bit too salty. Other than that the beets and asparagus were good, as was the squash goulash-type side. The restaurant has a quirky interior with a pretty big bar and a decent on-tap beer selection. Overall a pretty good experience. read more

Seriously disappointed with this Lynchburg staple. I have been here several times and always had a wonderful experience. Decided to have my birthday dinner here this year, and had one of the worst restaurant experiences. The menu has far fewer items than in the past, and they were out of the first three items I selected. Chose the Rendezvous special and was informed that my other choices didn't qualify. The cheese plate options were drastically reduced as well. Ended up paying $30 for the bottle of wine that the waitress had already opened and left without eating. Seriously disappointed. read more

Great ambience and friendly knowledgeable staff. The wine list and cheese selection are probably the best in town. Some of the food is outstanding, like the Fritto Misto, Indian cauliflower, Kim Chee pancake, and others. Some things, like beer braised hen of the woods mushrooms, are nice attempts. I have to say, that I have had Cable from 3 Companies and I have had Dish for I think about 8 or 9 years. I am absolutely pleased with the service I have had with them during this time. They do what they say they will do and sometimes even beyond. I wish I could remember the 2 guys who came out last time my dish was out of alignment. My house had shifted because I had work done on my balcony. The dish was way out and at a hard place on top of my Modified A-Frame house. (scares me just to go up there). The repair man looked at my wires and found that they looked a little dry rotted. (I couldn't tell anything was wrong, he said one was a little cracked). He replaced all the wires from the dish to my receiver. Again, I wished I could remember their names as I would be writing their boss to tell him/her how pleased I was. Thank you Dish, Randy I have to add something to my review. I loved the service I got from dish until I tried to cancel service..... I was never happy with my internet with Verizon and Comcast (xfinity) was offering a bundle that I couldn't refuse, So I had to cancel my Dish subscription. They were not pleased to say the least. I spoke to a number of people before I finally got someone who would allow me to cancel. He was a total JERK and threatened me to send my 8 year old DVR back (on my own nickle). I told him to just to have one of the installers to pick it up when they were in the neighborhood. His answer was you send it back or we will bill you (I think it was about $50 for something that was out of date). That was an attempt at revenge on his part because I was pretty pissed by the time I got to him. And no, I was not very pleasant at the time. (I got an email later telling me that I did not have to send the DVR back as long as I didn't use it or let anyone else use it).... Save yourself a trip and a cover charge if they're having a band or live anything. The place is tiny, so there is no where to go or even stand. What few tables they have are awkwardly placed on one side with the bar on the other and a 3' path in between. Who knows about the food...it might be great, but the service and atmosphere was not. No one knows where the one "genderfluid" bathroom is, and any decent bartender should be able to handle 40 patrons with no issue. They'd be SOL in a real city. read more

Not that great for a private party. Was there for several hours and all I ate was a few pieces of cheese, olives and some kind of spring roll. They put all the food at one end of the bar and with a crowd of people hovering all night, not really the best layout. If we could give dish 3.5 stars we would. We were fans when we left... We felt just fine paying the $91 for 5 small plates, a bottle of wine, and a slice of pie... it was almost (key word = almost) a quaint little foodie gem in a town where you wouldn't necessarily expect to find one... if only they didn't so consistently and so often remind us that they were not quite there. It was as if they weren't a really nice restaurant - they just played one on TV. They "dared us" (on their special board) to buy a bottle of wine and they would give us a cheese plate with two selections gratis... so we did - or at least attempted to. The bottle that we had selected was sold out (keep in mind this is 7pm on a Friday night for a special that was their idea) so we decided on a red - a mencia from Spain - Sila, Bodega Pazos del Ray, Monterrei, 2009 - it was mild and delicious and paired well with the pecorino romano served with sliced strawberries they suggested and the caprino tartufo (goat cheese) we substituted for their house-made mozzarella. The caprino was mild, super creamy, and blended with a hint of black truffle which was faint but delicious nonetheless. It was excellent - unnecessarily served with a fig jam and tasty crouton/cracker hybrids. The cheese portions were really small which was annoying but expected. The soft bread was homemade, served room temperature for some reason (it would have been much better warm) and with an olive oil blend that lacked both salt and subsequently any real flavor which was easy to remedy. As far as the tapas we selected - we ordered quail which was lightly breaded, fried, served with sliced granny smith apples and maytag blue cheese. It was by far the best dish of the night - perfectly fried, tender, juicy... an upscale comfort food of sorts... we liked it so much so that we ordered a second to close out the evening. We also ordered the spring roll - stuffed with duck confit and napa cabbage and served with a spicy orange chili sauce. It was crispy, flavorful, the duck was cooked perfectly and was moist and the orange glaze was simultaneously spicy and sweet. Next came the monkfish special which was served grilled, wrapped in bacon, served with a hoisin sauce. The bacon while somewhat undercooked was surprisingly strong and tasty and paired perfectly with everything on the plate. This was another A+ plate, no questions asked. Lastly, we ordered the fried seafood plate accompanied by a lemon caper aioli which was average at very best. It was greasy and the breading was plain. There was way too much calamari and way too few scallops and shrimp. The worst part about the last dish is we were more or less left with no other choice but to try it because they ran out of all but three of their hot tapas (at this point by 830pm on a Friday night). For dessert I had a French press coffee which was standard and my wife had a slice of blackberry pie with too thick of a crust, not enough filling and so forth. We wanted their homemade ice cream made daily but they were, yet again, out of it at what was now 835pm on Friday night. Overall we really enjoyed the experience but as noted in the beginning of the review - dish would be a 4 star restaurant if they could only get out of their own way. Witnessing them run out of so many things so frequently felt like amateur hour but they certainly have all of the potential in the world to be a great spot and we have no problems recommending it - as long as you go early. read more

I was shocked the first time we tried to eat at Dish on a week night and were turned away at the door--it was booked! We made it on another night with the needed reservation and tried a number of plates. A real "big city" kind of place right in downtown Lynchburg. It's now on our list of places we always go when we are in town. read more

I'll admit, I'm not a huge fan. I think there is so little good dining in Lynchburg that when people see anything different, they immediately think it's the most amazing thing ever. Same here for Dish. Okay food, way over priced. read more

I am always amazed this place remains open. I want to love this place, but every time I go, I leave more disappointed that I spent my money here than the time before. The service is terrible...always. The food tastes great, when it comes. Every time I go they are out of so many items. It takes forever to order and forever to get the first plate. After the first plate each dish comes out right on top of each other. This is not the way tapas should be served. Some people in my party did not even receive half of their food. The ambiance is cute and the concept is great but like I said, I want to like this place, but it seems to get worse and it is such a shame. read more

Tried this new place and as an avid restaurant goer, the atmosphere was great as was the service except... Dont understand the cheese servings? The Paella was not Paella but rice, cooked with frozen veggies and seafood thrown in and cheap Chorizo The tomato, cheese and olives came on a huge slice of bread, made no sense at all We came at 8:30 and they were already out of 5 cheeses, 3 wines, 4 dishes. I realize its new, but they need to get a better handle on the food menu and servings. read more
