Terrible trim, too long of a time waiting for our dog to be finished. Not going back.

MendocinoK9 - Enzo at the beach!

    MendocinoK9

In 2021, we brought home a Great Dane puppy named Enzo. As he grew we quickly realized he had…read morereactivity issues. We worked with several trainers over several months and while Enzo picked up new commands we couldn't quite crack his reactivity issue. At 130lbs, it was becoming problematic to have him jump, bark and lunge at people and dogs. We got anxious every time we went out for a walk. Luckily, we found MendocinoK9 and Alexia. Enzo had stayed with Alexia while we were out of town before, but after Theo (Refined K-9) did an assessment she recommended Enzo do a 4-6 week board and train with Alexia since she is used to working with extra large dogs. Getting Enzo out of his element would help him learn the skills he needed more quickly, Theo said. So we gave it a shot. We dropped him off a few weeks later. Alexia quickly realized what others had missed. Enzo was a confident working dog in need of a purpose and some impulse control. She adjusted his workout routine to include a daily treadmill run and taught him to bark on command. She took him to new places and he got lots of practice being calm at the beach, the park, the hardware store, etc. We got pictures, videos and updates along the journey. Alexia also met with us a few times to teach us the new commands, learn proper leash pressure, and get some social time with our big boy. It was clear Alexia loves all the pups she works with and cares about her craft. Enzo came home five weeks later a happier, more well behaved dog. Enzo checks in with us when he sees a dog instead of freaking out and we can walk past people on the sidewalk without issue. We are currently in the process of reinforcing the foundation Alexia put in place and there is still more training to be done. Enzo isn't perfect (we aren't ready for crowded places and small dogs still get him excited) but we know his triggers now and we aren't anxious every time we leave the house. Eventually, we're hoping put his confidence to good use and try obedience competitions. I would highly recommend Alexia for anyone looking for an empathetic and experienced dog trainer! And Enzo can't wait to hang out with Alexia again the next time we go out of town. :)

Her owner did not return but luckily for Jayla, the neighbors did and they removed the chain. Jayla then ran away and lived on the streets until she was caught by a rescue organization. When she was brought to the USA, she had 2 previous families that tried to adopt her but her fears were too much for them. She kept running away and was terrified. I read her story and was heart broken, I talked with my husband and we decided we would give her a home. Now I knew up front this was going to require some patience, and most definitely the help of a trainer. The first 2 weeks were awe full she was afraid of everything and everyone. I called many trainers and found that most wanted me to hand her over to them for 2 weeks. Promising I would have a different dog when she returned. This was absolutely not going to happen, as I would NEVER do that! I finally found Gwen, I explained Jayla's situation and told her I would not allow her to "take" Jayla. Thankfully, she did not agree with that process either. Gwen came to our home the first time, walked in the door and laid on the floor. WHY? Because she knew Jayla would be frightened and did not want to scare her. She fed her chicken pieces for a while, which Jayla would not take at first but she did come around. Jumping ahead now, Gwen formatted a training practice that fit Jayla's needs specifically. Giving us tasks to work with her. I would send her videos for some help and call her "a lot"! She was always ready to give guidance and suggestions. Here we are 2 months later, Jayla is happy, running, playing. She even went to visit the neighbors! We can walk the neighborhood with minimal stress on her. She sits, down command and we are working on staying. Gwen explained this will be a very long process but there has been so much improvement just in the short time. If you want a true trainer to work with your dog and train YOU how to be an awesome dog owner, hire Gwen! She will definitely teach you how to interact in a positive productive way with your animal! Promise!!!
