We're…read moreworking hard on our goal to camp at least once a month in 2023, so this not-too-far spot seemed like a great spot to check out on a blustery January weekend. We were lucky to snag a partial hookup (power/water) site in the first loop (sites 1-9), which features views of the bay. The campground host was kind enough to help guide us as we backed in our new trailer, which is a LOT bigger than our old one! Soon enough we were snug in our site and all hooked up. The loop eventually filled up for the weekend and was very quiet. While our site didn't have a sewer hookup, there's a dump station at the park which is free for overnight campers. There's not a lot to do at this park, it's pretty small. But the beach is gorgeous, with nighttime views across the bay to the eerily gorgeous refineries to the west. We didn't do much exploring, except for a day trip to nearby Edison for some beers and lunch.

My husband had an unpleasant encounter with the camp host (during our second trip to this park, 9/24/26$ who insisted my husband should look for restroom code (twice) in the email knowing full well it's not on the email' He could have given the code but didn't! It was almost as if he did not believe my husband that we are campers there! Was the rudest encounter we have experienced! Such a disappointment.

Causland Park in Anacortes is a worthy little gem to visit. After so many years of visiting…read moreAnacortes, I spotted it on Google maps and dropped by. Intriguing. John Baptiste LePage (1857-1939) is the French-Canadian artist and architect who designed this unique memorial park, built from 1919 to 1921. It is now a registered national historic place. The plaque at the front of the gazebo/stage centerpiece dedicates the park in honor of Harry Leon Causland and the "brave sons of Fidalgo Guemes Decatur and Cypress Islands... who gave their lives in the Great War... 1917-1919." A second war memorial has been added with places to honor those who lost their lives in subsequent wars - World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War. Ominously, a spot sits empty on this memorial, as if to await the names from the Afghanistan 20 years war that just ended (or did it?). While the park has clearly been updated, it's quite clear what is original vs. what is new. The original portions feature different colors of stone mosaics forming 3-dimensional designs with an architectural style that favor non-angular, non-edged designs. At certain angles, they resemble Park Güell in Barcelona, i.e., the work of Antoni Gaudi. This park is lovingly well maintained. While I do not suggest driving to Anacortes just to visit this small park, I highly recommend stopping by if you are in the area.

This dog park has so much potential but like so many other things, the humans ruin it. So many neglectful and ignorant dog owners. I've been coming here off and on for quite a few years and I'd say about 75% of the dog owners either ignore their dogs, or don't know how to distinguish between dog signals for play, nervousness, and aggression. I've seen people yell at their own and other's dogs for barking while they're playing, completely ignoring their play bows, wagging tails, left sided ear flicks and eye winks, zoomies, and frequent changes in play styles. No hackles raised anywhere. All of these are meta signals that play is happening, and that the growl or bark is essentially trash talking. I've seen people force their dogs to interact with other dogs when they are shaking and hiding between the owner's legs. I've seen people let their dogs h*mp other dogs even though the other dog is snarling and trying to get away. I've seen people crowd together talking so then the dogs crowd together and get nervous because they don't know the other dogs and humans well enough to trust them and then a dog fight ensues. I've seen people bring their takeout and try to eat at the table and then seem surprised that the dogs are interested. I've also seen dogs jump on that table and pee on it. I saw one guy threaten to shoot someone's dog because he didn't like how it played with his dog (no dogs were harmed) and then wait in the parking lot for that dog and their owner. I stayed with the other dog owner until that guy left. I've essentially stopped taking my dog here because of all these things. Bummer because it's a nice park and it's very close. My 8 year old dog with cancer would love to play with some dog friends with the time she has left, but it's not going to happen here anymore. Is there a friends of Bakerview Dog Park group? Would love to see some signs with QR codes or URL's that link to videos on dog play behaviors. If people are going to stare at their phones instead of observing their dogs anyways, they might as well learn something about how to be a responsible dog owner.

There is only 1 common gated area for the dogs to play, big and small. The ground is covered with either wood chips or grass. There has been a shade and a tree or two added to the doggie area. There are plastic chairs and a few dog toys that other owners have brought as well. A doggie bag dispenser is located at the entrance way as well. There are baseball and soccer field as well as a basketball court. A play structure for kids, 3 slides and 4 swings. A skate park for older kids. There are a few picnic tables and a public restrooms. Kulshan trail goes through the park.

Their bathrooms and showers are well maintained, and the public use areas are always kept up as well. They staff a little snack shack where you can find limited swim gear and accessories, plus impressive snacks, coffee, ice cream, candy, etc. The lake is a non-motorized boat lake, but they rent out water toys or bring your own float islands and paddleboards. Mt. Constitution is also found within the park and is a must visit! Views into Canada and over the WA coast are to die for on a clear day. Whether you're visiting just for the day or longer, Moran State Park is an oasis worth experiencing!

This is probably the biggest highlight on Orcas Island if you're outdoorsy!…read more Lakes, scenic views, trails a plenty even leading to an ice cream finish, water activities, and on and on and on. I had only wished we had one more day. My group did the Cascade Lake Loop, Cascade Fall's, plus give or take hopping on to another trail to widen the "loop." Day passes are $10 bucks and go off an honor system with completing a short form with vehicle and govt issue ID details and dropping them into a collection box. Plenty of places to park near multiple different trail entrances. The trails are well maintained & the trees are massive. Sugar shack offered up some delicious ice cream during our widening of said loop. There were clean bathrooms and a large playground located near this pit stop. Plenty of entrances/parking to different trailheads can be found along the outskirts. Definitely recommend for anyone taking a vacation on Orcas Island. And as always practice leave no trace!

Being a few weeks removed from my day here helps me appreciate this lil' park for what it is. You…read moresee, I did not have the most five-star experience here, but that's unique to my visit. I'll spare the details as they're not relevant to the park, but it involved my very active dog and a very expensive camera lens. So what can I say about Obstruction Pass that is relevant? Well, it's a tiny little park. But almost everyone I spoke to about my time on Orcas said they actually like it more than its big neighbor Moran, to the north. Situated on the southern tip of the eastern point of Orcas Island, it only occupies 80 acres. But among that 80 acres is a bit of precious beachfront; some of the only public beach space on the island of private developments and no trespassing signs. These are San Juan island beaches, so you'll find millions of rounded pebbles, not sand, lest you imagine frolicking barefoot down the beach. To reach the beach, you have to hike. There's a shorter trail than sort of hugs the seashore, and a longer one that goes over land and abuts private property. I took the wooded longer one to the north on the way in, then the beach-hugger on the way out. It's a short hike, not too strenuous, but it's certainly not ADA approved and it will take you a little time to reach the waters. The park features the trail, beach, a small campground, and restrooms. You access the beach down a couple of staircases, and the thick woods above provide lots of shade. I was here in the dead of winter, but even then I shared the beach with a very loud family, and a couple of other parties. Dogs must be leashed at all times. Be careful on those rocks. If you're, say, carrying a full camera and tripod rig and slip, you'll bounce all the way down the rocks into the water. Probably. And then, after your dog damaged your lens before, and you ended up falling into the water, you'll just pack up and get back to your car and call it a day.

This is a great (less than) a mile hike to the beach and back with a pretty PNW view. Its not as big and majestic as Moren State Park, but its a great feeler for Orcas Island, and because of the size, you will notice more people around, when there are people around. We did this as a group of 6, quick in and out on our first day here. We saw a boat parked out on the water and a little house situated by the water. We didn't see many hikers here when we went on a late Saturday afternoon, but we saw a number of campers. *Porta potty's were available

There is also a porta potty The area is small due to private land on either side, which includes the beach. What there is was nice with easy beach access, fishing, swimming, and a good show from the Naval Air Station. If you want to watch jets roar overhead, this is about as close as the public can get. We love planes, so this was a doubly good spot. There is a bench for sitting and loads of driftwood that allows different areas to park your behind and watch the surroundings. A very nice place to visit that is a little off the beaten pass.

It's a small, but mighty, little strip of land that's bordered on three sides by private property, so while it might not be a great place to hang out with 1000 of your closest friends, you can't beat the vibe here for a small romantic picnic or playtime with the kid. The beach is pretty typical PNW: driftwood, rocks, mud, and lots of stinky seaweed to give the place atmosphere. We were there at low tide, so it definitely had wading potential (if you're into cold, Puget Sound water). The thing I liked most, besides the stunning views out to the Olympics, was that there were only two other people on the beach. This would also be a great place for some sea kayaking on a calm day. There is a port-a-potty in the small parking lot, but other than that there are few amenities here, so bring along your own water, shade, and seating. But if you're looking to cross yet another gorgeous PNW beach off your list, this one is definitely worth a visit.
