Informative Review vs. a "gushing review," systematically going through "everything" to help you understand how this office operates; ultimately, so you receive the best of your experiences: Phone call "reception"/the "operators": As of this post, you'll frequently (but not always) speak with Yvonne. They are AWESOME! To help you understand: If they "sound" anything other than "getting the job done," then you've likely called during a busy phone time (typically 8-8:30am, right after lunch, or 4:30-5pm). Since this IS a busy practice, the typical greeting speedily is, "South Oaks, how may I direct your call?" State the purpose of your call in a FEW simple words to expedite your call/transfer (i.e. "patient appointment," "schedule an in-office procedure," "medical records," "billing/payments," "calling for lab results," "questions for/need to speak with the nurse/doctor," etc, or even "I don't know!"). Phone Operator/phone "reception" bottom line: They receive your call and will schedule your appointment with the appropriate doctor/nurse, or they will transfer you to the appropriate person/dept. They are NOT the folks to share detailed medical problems/questions; however they WILL listen & help you, especially if you don't know what to do or who to ask for. Appointment Check-In / Front desk "reception": For fastest service, arrive at least 5 mins BEFORE your appointment time, & sign in. Your arrival is anticipated. Delays: most often related to the gathering/verifying needed insurance and/or medical history info/updates, demographic changes, discussing/rectifying possible past billing balances/issues, and/or tending to the person(s) who arrived before you. You will ALWAYS be asked if there are any changes in demographics & insurance, and at this time, you pay the co-pay, if applicable. Waiting time: room filled or empty, you'll be received in the appropriate order, period. I've had short & long wait times. If no one else is waiting & you are grumpy about it, how do you know if the rooms aren't filled or if a patient has a serious medical problem occurring? I assume my wait time translates to the doctor spending the time that is NEEDED with a patient (can be quick or longer). Also consider: if 1 appt runs late, the subsequent appts will likely be running late...that is, if you expect fairness! And, if MY needs are more minor/quick to resolution, I try to exit quickly "to help them" catch up if they're behind (yes, this can occur and is more frequent during higher incidences of illnesses, but not uncommon of ANY physician practice!). Called back from the waiting room: Your weight, temp., and heart rate will be taken (wellness exams include height); in the exam room, your blood pressure will be taken & you share the summary/purpose of your visit with the nurse/medical assistant. Then, you await the MD. MD visit: should ROCK. If minor/routine, it may be quick; but if seemingly too fast for you, JUST SAY SO! This practice is highly experienced, so routine issues may appear quick to you, but STOP THEM if you have remaining questions or concerns! They WILL listen! This practice is of the highest standards of care. If you haven't received a response satisfying your concern, ASK! Communications other than phone: SOFM uses "Patient Fusion" for appointments, nurse or billing contact, medical records, and feedback. Log in to Www.southoaksfamilymedicine.com for more info. So helpful! Diagnostics: on-site blood work = YES! On-site basic strep tests= YES & results while you wait! Xrays/MRIs/other diagnostics: Seton SW Hospital is conveniently next door (but I prefer ARA). Communication of diagnostic results: blood/lab work, xrays, CT scans/MRIs, mammograms, ultrasounds, etc: 1st rule of thumb = "no news is good news." Haven't heard? Assume 1st the results are normal; or for known problems: deeper assessment is occurring. As a general rule, wait 48 hrs before calling, depending on the test, if you are concerned. Prescriptions: Get them AT THE TIME OF YOUR VISIT (or verify they'll be called in to your pharmacy)! If not, there's a $5 fee: Yes, preparing a script takes time away from in-office tasks. As medical practices have received cut-backs on reimbursement, so too, understand that extraneous requests ultimately cut into doc/pt face-to-face time. Patients truly seeking lifelong excellent and holistically-focused care "wanted": Including those "on the edge" of something "not right," those of any remotely similar genre (regardless of origin), well-baby/adult, and all good & bad and/or uncomfortable reasons: South Oaks Family Medicine has the right provider for you!

I had just gotten insurance, and didn't have my proper paperwork. Her demeanor stayed steady throughout, and later when all had calmed down, she walked me through options for coverage in all cases. Nurse Christen and ER Tech Sandra were warm, efficient, and personable when they checked in with me. Christen, whom I saw several times through the visit was consistent and helped me feel like she really had my back throughout. Radiologist Keith was equally warm and helpful, patiently explaining my CT procedure to me. And Dr Racey helped me work through my various ideas as to what might be going on while being absolutely direct and honest with his answers, including what he didn't know and couldn't confirm. He was also clear in his recommendation to me to do what was needed to rule out stroke completely, and set up an emergent MRI for me at Seton Hayes nearby. I was SO grateful for that. Mossburg discussed my health in an intelligent and friendly manner with laptop in hand, taking detailed notes. At first, I was caught off guard by her incessant typing while maintaining steady eye contact and asking thoughtful questions. I appreciated it afterwards, though, as she leaves you with a thorough report of your condition along with the steps taken and those recommended. If you get any lab work done, she also leaves a detailed recorded message on a coded phone system thing that you call in to hear your results. Very cool and convenient. The office isn't new or fancy but tries with the faux wood flooring and Pier 1 wall art. Forget the office--good doctors are hard to find, and Mossburg's a good one.

She never once made me feel shame and has catered my treatment to my lifestyle and needs. I tend to be really hard on myself and she always redirects and lets me know when something is and will always be out of my control BUT how medical intervention can help. This is going to be a side note but it is important- somehow I had an appointment the month my mother passed and six months later while I was having a miscarriage. The level of care and empathy Brandy showed me really made an impact on me. Both of these situations could have derailed my health, but she was supportive and it made a difference. I feel so lucky to have someone on my team who genuinely cares.

Donna Teague, PA has been a very helpful and compassionate liaison for my physician at APA. The…read morebusiness protocol is to see a RN or PA monthly or quarterly depending upon the type of medication or services the patient is receiving. Ms Teague is a very pleasant and positive force in helping me maintain the best optimal care available to address the chronic conditions that I face daily. These conditions began in the late 80's. I luckily was referred to a pain management facility, specifically Dr Robert Wills in the early 2000's. I have been put through an array of diagnostics and procedures over the course of the years. I'm not sure there is one answer or one method to treat chronic syndromes; therefore, I try to keep an open mind. I haven't found the right combination of meds or procedure to keep me symptom free but feel that the care and direction that I receive from Ms Teague to have made a difference. We have gone down many roads, all with the hopes of finding a magic formula. I don't think it exists. I think the patient has to realize that some things may bring relief, some may bring temporary relief and some may not help at all.

I am so seriously impressed. Having been through cancer with a child, helping my sister with a…read morebrain tumor and her recovery last year, andeven more with my family, I am not used to efficient pleasant competent staff, informative doctors, or medical staff that actually listens and explains. We love this office. The front staff is pleasant and helpful. The cardiac techs are business like but pleasant enough and efficient. Dr. Risinger takes time to ask, listen and explain. I LOVED that the staff all spoke directly to my 85 yo mother even though she is old and in a wheel chair. Some places and doctors talk to the family member instead. Other pluses are: we needed paperwork and tests quickly for clearance for some procedures and they were accommodating and worked to get our ducks in a row for it all; the staff at the cardiac testing facility next door in the same bldg (St. David's) were just as pleasant and professional and respectful of my mother; Tony that called us about results handled an extra task for us and was great; the nurse called to confirm that clearance was sent. Geez, who knew health care could be like this? WooHoo, it was wonderful. I just wish I could re-do the lighting and add some color to the interior 's black and gray and perk up the plants. Don't let the interior put you off -- it's the people that make the difference and they all seemed great. Thank you!
