Well, it was and it wasn't. Yes, it is filled with every imaginable jersey but it is also filled with tons and tons of sports equipment. I was pretty excited because my boyfriend and I had been talking about getting some tennis rackets, but we're on a tight budget. I wandered around the shop for a while before I approached a sales assistant and asked for a little advice. He said they had some rackets but that another location would have more in stock. He also said that they come in a range of prices, from 20 euros and up! That is not bad for a tennis racket, not bad at all! I didn't end up buying anything, but when I need some sports stuff this'll be the place I come looking for it.

Still, it's a good gag, I've gotta give it to them there. They really had me on that one. I suppose it's in the ethos of the sport too, so fair play, fair play. They've got the basics I admit, gumshields, rugby shirts, shin pads and the like. Not the best range of footwear, which, unless you do something like martial arts or swimming is kind of a big deal) and their swimwear isn't the broadest choice either, which is odd considering that one of the biggest clubs in Ireland is based around 10 minutes away so you'd think that could be a bit of a draw. I am one of those people who lost my taste in soccer at a young age, not because I had anything in particular against the sport. I don't know what it is really the rest of the world is obsessed with it and in the states it's losing money. That said a friend of mine is an absolute football fanatic and I was stuck for a birthday present idea. I popped into this shop and was amazed at the selection they had of jerseys and other gear for all kinds of teams. I overcame this fear when I saw that Champions Sport was having a 20% off Nike clothes. This brand is expensive so I was pleased with the markdown. Inside, there were some amazing offers, the best one being a Nike Baywatch red bikini for 11 euro. I was gobsmacked: the bathsuit was quite fashionable and good quality, much better than the ones in Topshop. Besides the swimwear, the shop also sells great Addidas tracksuits in bright colours like purple, red and green. I would wear one of these if I was running a marathon or working out. Contraily to my original belief, Champion Sports does have some decent sporty clothes that won't make you look like something out of Little Britain.

There was just one little thing that I didn't like ... conditioning. Now don't get me wrong I didn't have any problem running, etc while playing basketball, it's these little things that they make you do at the end of practice called suicides. I think the name says enough in itself. It's a dreadful line drill. Anyways that has always cemented in my head that running is punishment. So last year I foolishly took on the task of trying to run the Flora Women's mini-marathon, ok I was only planning on running like 2 miles and walking the rest. Since moving to Ireland the only running shoes I had were shipped over to me by my mom because I just found it so difficult to find a shop with a good selection of women's shoes that weren't outlandishly priced. A runner friend of mine recommended stopping into Mick Dowling's. I was amazed at the selection and how helpful the staff were. They even set me up with some other gear that I would need to make sure my training went off well. Now unfortunately for my training, the pub was right near the gym, and instead of encouraging our training my friend's boyfriend encouraged our drinking. Oh well, at least I have the gear the next time I decided to take up running.

I went for the punchbag and gloves combo, reasonably priced and easier to ignore than a treadmill in the corner of a room it was the perfect choice for me! So this place took me down memory lane, I still get excited by football/soccer shops. I love the smell and the different coloured strips. This place has everything you need as a football fan or player. Extensive selection of jerseys, boots, balls etc. Also very reasonable prices compared to the bigger branded stores. It was the only sports shop I knew of, and more than likely, it was probably the only one in Dublin. This was of course before the days of the Jervis Shopping Centre, and the Lifestyle we used to patronise was far smaller and dingier than the one here now. Lifestyle is a 100% Irish owned company (lots of bonus points for that) and has a particularly Irish focus, with lots of GAA gear in stock. They seem to cater for people who actually play sports, rather than the likes of Marathon and Champion Sports or Foot Locker that sell flecky tracksuits to kids who think they're fashionable. It's a good place to go to get a tennis racket, swim suit, running shoes and footballs.
