I'm visiting from the Seattle area, and what started as a quick stop turned into one of my favorite memories from this trip. The man named Rocky asked where I was visiting from, and when I told him Tacoma, he smiled and said, "I'm from Tacoma too!" Such a small world! We ended up chatting for a while, he shared some great local restaurant recommendations, and even surprised me with some complimentary ice cream. The ice cream was so good I completely forgot to take a picture until all that was left was the empty cup. Great ice cream is easy to find. Genuine kindness isn't. If you're anywhere near Hillside Water & Ice Cream, stop in. You'll get amazing treats, friendly conversation, and the kind of hometown hospitality that makes a place memorable. The brand has a really distinctive local identity and if you're looking for an edible souvenir, this is a great option since their products are allergen-friendly. They're gluten-free, nut-free, and soy-free, and they're also Kosher dairy-certified. I also loved that they have some Southwestern inspired flavors, which makes them feel a little more unique than your average popcorn shop. This is a standalone store, but they also sell online and at select grocery stores like AJ's Fine Foods and Fry's Foods. What I loved about visiting the shop itself is that you can sample all the different varieties, and it's nice to be able to get fresher batches and different sizes straight from the source. I ended up taking home a big bag of their prickly pear popcorn and a normal size bag of the Porcini Truffle Cheddar, which had a really nice savory flavor with real porcini mushrooms, black truffle sea salt, and organic cheddar cheese. The water is reverse osmosis which is the same quality as the water delivery companies. Also, you can come in at your convenience instead of waiting for the delivery truck to drop it off each month. ANNND... if you really can't wait, there is a water dispenser on the outside of the store for 24 hour self-serve water-filling. These external fill stations are a little banged up from vandalism, but the spouts looked clean and still functional. This place is really clean inside which gives me confidence of its sanitation.They have all your water needs and even sell bottles, caps, dispensers, not to mention, little knick-knacks and random novelty items. ANNND... Thrifty ice cream and snow cones and other snacks! Yep, you can be healthy by getting your water and then be unhealthy at the same time by getting some sweet treats. It's all about balance, right? This store is like those little shops you grew up with as a kid and dipped into your piggy bank to get a treat.
