Eclectic is the first word that pops into ones head when you enter Digs. Mock rooms are set up in the front, a bedroom on my first visit. Air plants, outdoor furniture, odd concrete baby heads with horns, mini gnome figurines, orange outdoor chairs, cups, bowls, anatomy skeleton decorative trays, snake wall hangings, it's endless and a feast for the eyes if you like the unusual and obscure. This is no Pottery Barn. It's not a place I'd normally go into, but I was curious and curiosity didn't kill the cat today. I've since gone back with a friend who is doing some interior design currently and she thought the place very interesting. There's a helpful and friendly staff and wandering through this place, it's a good thing they are available. Stopped into Digs while strolling along Alberta on our Portland vacation. This is a very eclectic little gift shop where they also do interior design. We were offered a free espresso when we walked in and everyone was really friendly. I fell in LOVE with pretty much everything in the store and it's a good thing it was all a bit pricey for me. :) They do have really pretty succulents and air plants all over that really are not expensive. This would also be a fantastic place to find a unique gift as well. read more

I'm in the mood for outdoor decor these days trying to make my balcony a place I actually want to hang out. They had a great selection of appetizer plates, outdoor/indoor rugs, and small plants (of course). This place lures me in every time I stroll past. The store is an assortment of furniture, knick knacks, indoor plants, accessories, and art. They have a great selection of air plants, succulents, and planters for these to go into. Also outdoor sculptures and furniture. When you go in the friendly staff will happily give you a shot of espresso to wake you up while you shop. Make sure to really look around....some of the best items are in the corners of the shop. Although the items run on the pricey side, I've found great gifts and hard to find items in here. read more

Over the years, I've frequented the shop a lot. Plants, bird baths, gifts, earrings and I've most recently realized its a recycle point for my nespresso pods. I once saw a pair of gray chairs in the window I loved, I researched and found the same chairs for over $120 cheaper on overstock, same brand same model. I now have the set in my living room. I didn't write a review then but I write one now because something just happened that I thought unimaginable and unacceptable. My mom went into digs the other afternoon. I told her to buy plants there as the Home Depot/lowes kinds are killing bees. She found a plant she wanted and was told by a man that their ENTIRE RACK OF PLANTS WERE ALL SOLD OUT. Then another man let her know that they just arrived. My mom is a 66 year old korean grandma. She shouldn't have to put up with this crap. When she told me the story it broke my heart especially since I told her to go in there. And especially because she moved to this small town to be closer to me. I went in shortly after and meandered and asked about some plants. Why golly, they were all for sale. You know what, as a business owner, every dollar from every customer counts. Wtf is this kind of behavior? I know that Portland is a small but very white town, I know that it's highly segregated and has a horrific racist history. But it's 2014, let's just pretend that you're progressive and tolerant, and after all, we are just talking about shopping!!! Seriously, wtf. It took a lot of my anger management not to want to serious rip someone a new one at the store - esp since I couldn't tell which man was the racist asshole shitbag. It took me several days to write this as calmly as I can. There are plenty of other places in town where I can spend our money. Ultimately, Dig is a boutique hoping to outfit your home and garden with fancy furniture and accessories. If ever I'm looking for a unique, well-priced, gift for friends or family members, this is my go-to place. The owner travels consistently to bring special items one can't find in any other shop in Portland. The shop is repeatedly listed on blogs and magazines as a great and creative shop--it's earned that reputation. One side of the shop is dedicated to interiors & the newly opened other side to outdoor decor. There are many local artists represented, which I personally appreciate. I was blown away at others' "bad customer service" experience--those girls are helpful, and genuinely kind. I hope a few people's poor reviews don't stop others from an enjoying a visual delight. I wish this place was on the east coast. Since I'm only here for the summer, I didn't see the necessity of buying indoor terrestrial globes or pillows, throws, and accessories. However, the coffee table books are all ADORABLE. I picked up a handbook for aspiring dictators, a picture book for travelers who don't know the local language but need to communicate, and the hilarious musings of a grammar guru. Great additions to your apartment or gifts for friends. They also had free maps of each district of portland with great suggestions for stores and restaurants. My son and I recently visited Digs after having lived here for 7 years. We are in love with gnomes right now and are getting super into needle felting and other wool crafts. This place was pretty heavenly, especially around the ornaments. We aren't Waldorf peeps, though we like the philosophy...but for anybody who is, I wouldn't miss this shop. Between Gossamer and Digs, you can make a pretty friendly house! If you're looking for winter holiday stuff, they had the book, Gnomes (who doesn't love that?) as well as a number of sweet wool gnome ornaments, other types of wool ornaments, stacked yule trees, etc. I believe there was a pick your own upholstery deal going on in the corner - but I didn't have enough time to check that out. There is something in here which you need...which you must take home and simply cannot live without. This is the type of shop I could spend a very long time in just looking around at all the pretty things and how they are arranged. If anything it triggers my creativity at home or gives me ideas for future displays at home, craft projects or make a fun gift for a friend. read more

Very cute little shop. The owners are very sweet, friendly but not pesterly when you're trying to shop. I came in to browse and while I didn't find anything I had to buy that day, I can see myself coming back sometime. They have a lot of gnomes. and soap. too much. they dedicate too much space to it. And from the website, I was expecting more furniture (which is why I went there). Be aware, it's a very small shop. Things are tight in there. They do have some very cute stuff and when on sale, very reasonably priced. In the back is a little room full of samples for fabric, I'm guessing the storefront was an afterthought for their designing business. It is for sure a cool place to stop in if you're already on Alberta, but I wouldn't drive from SW again to go there. read more

They do, however, have a decent selection of succulent plants that are $3-$8, so I stop by on occasion and pick up something new for my windowsill garden. They also have some neat planters (though the price ranges vary greatly). There are so many cute little oddities in this shop. Tentacle planters, doll arm ring holders, and other unique elements of home decor fill the walls of Digs. Plus they offer you free espresso while you browse. This isn't the cheapest place and it can get quite crowded, but it's definitely worth a browse if you're interested in atypical gifts for friends and family, or yourself. read more

The owner does not take returns. There is no notice at the register that returns/exchanges are for STORE CREDIT only. My understanding, as a consumer, is that "returns" means I can return the item for the original form of payment unless stated otherwise. You should tell your customers before they make a purchase whether or not they will be stuck with something that doesn't work for them once they take the piece home to see how it looks. The owner would not make an exception even though I was traveling from out of town and could not use the store credit. read more

Some friends recommended Digs when I wanted to reupholster some old chairs that I wanted done right. The staff and owner were very helpful and gave me tips that I will use for years. They have a wide array of fabrics and I was able to get a custom look that I still love a year later. I would use them again in a heartbeat. read more

The staff is super friendly and awesome to chat with. They offer free espresso (Nespresso) there in an attempt to sell their machines haha. Digs has some cute things, the issue is with the customer service. Seems to stem from the owner...the first time I went in it was because I had read on a blog that Digs was having a sale. Upon entering I asked a sales clerk if the prices listed were the sales prices, at which point the owner yelled (yes yelled, not just spoke loudly to make sure I was able to hear her) from the back of the store (while serving another customer) that the sale was over. Thanks for letting me know. Being a forgiving sort I thought I would go in a second time. No owner on this visit, but 2 sales clerks who stood at the back of the store staring (perhaps glaring?) at me not saying a word. Not very welcoming. So again, cute things but you can buy the same stuff at other places in Portland where they actually seem to like their customers. Personally I'd rather spend my money somewhere like that. read more

Things in here are a bit pricier (but no more so than the average curio store) but we stumbled upon an amazing (and sooooo dangerous) thing is that a at the end of every season they have a huge 50% off sale on EVERYTHING in the store. I like this place. I shop here more than I like to admit... Everything from cute nonsense items for my own house, to wedding gifts, come from this place. I've found quite a lot of their items to be overpriced, but wind up buying them anyway as I'm in a pinch most the time (items like "day of" wedding gifts, especially). If you have a hole in your pocket, you should go here, they will no doubt have something that you can't live without - like my balloon dog lawn ornament, or my beagle shaped creamer dish... I've been here 3 times purchasing plants and gifts, and lingered around the espresso machine each time, and was never offered the espresso they were so happily giving out to other customers. I've gotten several airplants, succulents, and tiny houseplants from here, and I have been really disappointed in them. One succulent had a moldy substance on it and another dissolved as if it had been over-watered just before I got it. There were mites on 2 other plants. I have a large collection of these at home and haven't had problems with those I've purchased from other places. I have likes the other gifts and soaps I've gotten here, even though they were overpriced, the selection is nice. read more

I bought a handmade vase in the shape of an octopus. I also purchased some cacti and asked them to gift wrap it. The sales associate put it in a box and then placed the box/vase in a fancy bag covered with paper. When my mom opened the bag, she reached in and grabbed the box by the sides. When she lifted the box up, the vase fell through the bottom of the box breaking part of the octopus tentacles off. We realized that the bottom of the box had not been taped. I returned the broken vase to ask for an exchange since I was given a less than ideal packaging. I was then told that the box was only to keep the vase upright . She stated that she tells everyone this. I disputed this statement. I asked to speak with the owner. She came out and stated I could leave the vase and they would try to repair it or I could purchase another vase at cost. If I drop the vase, I get it.....not their fault. But they put it in a box not taped. Unbelievable. Buyer beware of this establishment. I will never buy anything from here and will let everyone know what terrible customer service this place is serving up. read more

On Mothers Day I wandered into Digs with a friend, there are some nice things there but it's pretty much like a lot of the shops on Alberta these days, overpriced and somewhat pretentious. I ended purchasing 2 plants, one of which was a small variegated jade. It lasted a week then literally fell to pieces. I returned it and after being quizzed about how I watered it (I have a giant jade I grew from tiny along with about 30 other plants in my home) and peered at suspiciously and asked again when I'd bought it as if saying on Mothers Day wasn't specific enough, she found me another to replace it. I then saw an overpriced but lovely large yellow plant pot I wanted and when I went to check out, she had the audacity to charge me half price for the Jade (it was originally $7 for what was basically a tiny cutting). Pretty tacky and very disappointing customer service. I didn't say a word, just paid and left but I won't be back and I will be recounting my story to everyone I know. read more

Very small window for returns and exchanges. Brought back a defective item I purchased as a gift, and the owner was unwilling to exchange the item. I do agree that a policy is a policy, and realize I was 6 days outside of their 7 day exchange policy, but I had not opened the item to realize it was discolored as there were several of the same item on display at the time of purchase and the one that I purchased was boxed. I was told, through the cashier who consulted with the owner in the back room 3 separate times, that the items were hand crafted and the discoloration was normal. Several of the same item sat out on the shelf upon my return visit with no discoloration - but still, no compromise. Sad to end up with a cute gift that I would be embarrassed to give, and I won't be visiting this store again. Even a face to face with the owner would have shown a greater level of customer service, but they made the cashier into their messenger. Unpleasant experience! read more

Lovely boutique! They always have cute unique home decor. And there plant selection is beautiful. My favorite part is they give you free espresso as you shop! And it's actually quite tasty. They have a good variety of succulents and air plants that are all reasonably priced. Staff is always friendly! I love swinging in here whenever I'm on Alberta or when I have out of town friends and family. It's a great place to get inspiration and take home something special and unique. read more

Never shop here. I had the craziest experience. I bought a large fig tree here. After about 2 weeks of living with a new fruit fly epidemic in my home I realized it was coming from this tree. I happened to see them crawling out of the dirt. I dug through the dirt and found thousands of eggs. I called the store and was told to never bring the tree into the store. I was told to throw it away. I was told I would get a refund. I called several days later to ask if I needed to be in person or if I could receive the refund over the phone. I was having trouble finding time to drive back across town that week. A new sales girl told me she would never have given me a refund and placed me a long hold while she talked to the owner. Even though I had thrown the tree away, per their instruction, I was told I would not be getting a refund. The sales girl seemed to take great joy in this. After a few days I called back, speaking with the first person whom had promised me the refund. She spoke with the owner and said I could instead have a replacement tree. They were having trouble getting the trees in ( I wonder why!) and put me on a list to receive one. I called throughout the year asking if they were back in stock. I was always told no. Finally i called without telling the story or giving my name. I was told the trees were in stock. When I said who i was and was still waiting for a replacement the sales girl said she would have the owner call me. The owner never called. How random and strange. I was an actual customer of this place. Stopping in whenever I was on Alberta. If I received this level of service you will also. NEVER shop here and certainly never make a large purchase. It is also important to understand that a real plant store told me afterwards they would have never told me to throw the tree away. That the plant could have been saved and they had no idea why this place would be so scared of me brining the tree back into their store for them to look at. Digs sells plants but doesn't have the knowledge to care for them. read more

I live in the neighborhood and have walked by their storefront on many occasions, always a bit disappointed that the timing hasn't been right to actually browse and hopefully buy. Today, I finally made the time and effort to go inside. Some good friends bought a house and I figured this particular store would be a really great place to look for a house warming gift. It started out well enough. No one pestering me or hovering, cutesy gifts and decent enough prices for a kitschy shop on Alberta. However, as I found my way into the tiny second room, the owner/sales clerk didn't even acknowledge me until it became apparent, I suppose even to himself, that he was being rude. He finally suggested I look at the cologne next to the register area. There were some interesting/different scents, such as earthworm or mildew, and they smelled just as bad as I would suspect the actual items to smell. That was it. That was the extent of our interaction. Meanwhile, a couple of lovely ladies walked through the door and he made a beeline for them, he was very welcoming, offering an espresso and making sure their every question was answered. I was truly baffled by this experience. The shop is cute but I would suggest not going in if you didn't walk out of the house looking your finest. read more
